A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

All mining operations are superimposed on natural hydrologic systems. As a result, mining operations are influenced by natural hydrologic processes and require water management systems to successfully conduct mining activities. Managing water and mining-related solutions is a critical task at all stages of the mine life because of the time-dependent nature of natural and mining-related flows. Effective operation of the mining water management system requires a “systems” approach that integrates the time-dependent effects of all water and mine solution handling components. This paper discusses the concept and application of dynamic systems modeling to address the time dependent nature of mining water management systems.

Information gathered while studying geological parameters that govern fine gold deposition in the a1luvial environment can be applied to the technological development and selection of fine gold recovery systems. It is recognized that substantial gold losses occur in the minus 1.5 mn (minus 12 mesh) fraction using conventional sluicing systems. Within the past two decades much attention has been given the design and efficiency of these thick bed concentrators. Studies and comparisons drew information from several foreign and domestic placer operations. These studies concentrated on: 1) the physical and chemical properties of alluvial gold 2) the parameters that control fine gold deposition 3) the geometrical form, components and general working structure of conventional sluicing systems 4) the physical properties which contribute to the overall efficiency of a sluice system 5) the comparison of three major styles of conventional sluicing systems. A dramatic improvement regarding fine gold recovery and water quality was observed when using modern multiple-channel sluicing systems in place of conventional single-channel sluicing systems.

"First Majestic Silver Corp. (FMS) is a silver mining company founded in 2002 that operates exclusively in Mexico. It has six producing silver mines, one of which is the La Encantada silver mine (La Encantada) located in the state Coahuila. La Encantada is located near the southern United States border and 708 km (440 miles) north of the city Torreon.La Encantada is located in the Sierra Madre Oriental and is a high-temperature carbonate replacement deposit. Mineralization in La Encantada occurs in many different forms such as veins, chimneys, breccia pipes and reefs (mantos). Mineralization is mainly oxides of iron, zinc, lead and manganese, with high concentrations of sulfides at depth relating to two main intrusive events: the Milagros Intrusive and the La Prieta Skarn.Mining began in La Encantada during the 1950s with small vertical shafts, drifts and raises. It focuses on the high-grade silver zones using traditional hoists and extraction methods, before branching into two main separate mining camps: El Plomo and Penoles camp. Penoles, the previous owner, focused mainly on large ore bodies using post pillar cut-and-fill mining method to extract the higher-grade material. Due to the type of ground, irregularity of pillars, and rock conditions, large amounts of high-grade pillars had to be left in situ to ensure the stability of the excavations. The mined-out areas would then be filled with lower-grade material to assist in the stability of the secondary level. These room-and-pillar development entries were 2.5 m x 2.5 m (8.2 ft x 8.2 ft) and spaced every 10 m (32 ft), leaving a vertical pillar of 7.5 m (25 ft). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. After the acquisition of the mine, the company began the conversion of the surveying reference system from a local grid (Maria Isabel Shaft as 0,0) to the Nav27 coordinate system, and subsequently converted to the WGS84 coordinate system in 2015. Due to the extensive history of the mine, different areas were surveyed with different systems, causing significant challenges when designing the principal extraction levels, pillar heights and ramp locations. To overcome this difficulty, the entire mine was resurveyed and the old workings transposed to the new coordinate system, except for some inaccessible areas due to poor ground conditions or ground collapses. To further ensure pillar height and the safety of the mine workers, probe holes were drilled during the development process."

Rate of penetration of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) has a significant role in the planning, measurement of productivity and performance of any tunneling project. In this paper, the application of Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in prediction of TBM penetration rate is evaluated. For this purpose, a database including Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Uni-axial Compressive Strength (UCS) of the rock, the Distance between Planes of Weakness (DPW) in the rock mass, and empirical data regarding rate of penetration of TBM from several tunneling projects are collected. The Rate of Penetration is then estimated by using ANFIS. These results are then compared with measured TBM penetration rates (actual data). It is concluded that ANFIS can be applied successfully for such purpose and result in high accuracy for prediction for the rate of penetration of TBM. The method provided in this paper can assist the mining engineer to estimate the performance of tunneling accurately.

Groundwater inflow into hard rock tunnels is strongly affected by recharge and drawdown of the water table. Previous analytical and empirical methods for estimating inflow have generally not accounted for these factors in an accurate or systematic way, resulting is wrong conclusions about inflow and the effects of the tunnel on the surrounding environment. This paper discusses these issues and provides some simple analytical equations to estimate inflow and water table drawdown around the tunnel. Examples from tunnels in the Atlanta area are provided.

The Old Hickory mineral sands ore body in Virginia (>2000 ha) currently supports a productive rowcrop agriculture. Reclamation experiments were implemented on pilot-scale mining pits from 1995 to 1998. Half of each mining pit was topsoiled (25 cm) while the remaining half was left as either (1) mixed tails/slimes or (2) re-graded subsoil over tails/slimes treated with 112 Mg/ha yardwaste compost. Post-mining productivity was estimated to be reduced by 23%, 3%, 27%, and 20% for each crop (wheat/soybeans/corn/ cotton) in sequence when compared to undisturbed soils. G.F. Learning The paper by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard is a wonderful description of the labyrinthine web that has been spun about the mining industry by energetic bureaucrats and politicians over the past 50 years. The remedy for the problem, however, is not more of the same, but less. That may be difficult for the industry to achieve, for it is not a technical solution but a political one. And the current fervor for more detailed planning at all levels of government and private enterprise has become deeply ingrained. The authors recommend the provision of more information about mining and mineral resources to "macro" (i.e., government) land use planners. They apparently overlook, however, the already strong tendency on the part of most government land use planners to consider themselves omniscient. Thus, giving them more information about the technical problems of mining will only make them want to get more and more involved in the "micro" (private, site specific) mine development and production plans of the individual mining firm. In fact, this has already happened at all levels of jurisdiction from municipal to federal government. Examples are legion. The most effective way to ameliorate the adverse impacts of government land use planning on existing and potential mining operations is to: (1) introduce greater flexibility in the definition of land use zones by local and state governments; (2) adopt realistic and relevant ambient environmental performance standards in governing relationships between mineral land uses and concurrent or subsequent nonmining land uses; (3) allow greater leeway for economic considerations in land use decisions in contrast to the explicit legalistic approach now in vogue; (4) recognize that all minerals are not the same and that sand and gravel mining should not be treated the same as underground metal mining, coal stripping, oil field production, or in situ leaching; and (5) eliminate the notion that mining operators should be responsible for determining in detail the use of land by subsequent owners of mined land. This last bit of conventional ethic really makes no more sense than requiring the builders of every shopping center or government office complex to provide detailed plans for the use of that land when its use for shopping or government is ended. Did the builder of Ebbetts Field plan for Brooklyn after the Dodgers went to Los Angeles? Should the developer of the Bingham Pit plan for suburban Salt Lake City after the copper mining goes to Chile? The nation's mining industry must address these questions before further bankrupting itself to provide more data to planners and spending thousands of dollars per acre to create land that when reclaimed is worth only a few hundred dollars per acre. Reply by R.V. Ramani and R.J. Sweigard We thank Mr. Leaming for his valuable contribution. His views on the problems of land use planning and mineral resources are most welcome additions to our paper. As the title indicates, our paper was more concerned with the impacts of land use planning on mineral resource conservation than with the details of the planning process. On the whole, his five recommendations would be helpful for mineral resource conservation. However, we would suggest that the argument he presents for his final recommendation does not address the differences between mining as a land use and commercial or institutional uses. We believe that this difference is the crux of the issue. We share Mr. Leaming's desire to ameliorate the adverse impacts of land use planning. Possibly the most detrimental impact is the loss of mineral resources. Any development, whether mineral or community, that does not give proper consideration to other resources can result in permanent loss or sterilization of resources. With proper planning, some of these losses can be avoided. As our paper indicated, one factor that limits the consideration of mineral resources, and ultimately leads to their sterilization, is the generally inadequate levels of resource characterization and understanding of the unique nature of mineral resources and mining operations. The last point raised by Mr. Leaming is also important. In terms of reclamation and land use planning in mining districts, we certainly do not advocate spending more than what the results are worth. The main thrust of the paper was to explore the avenues for conserving the mineral resources so that, at some appropriate time, the issue of mining and reclamation can still be addressed.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will induct five mining greats on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005 at the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 18thAnnual National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Nathaniel Peter Hill, John Munro Longyear, John McDonald, Julius Eckhardt Raht and John Dennis Ryan. Nathaniel Peter Hill (1832-1900) built the first successful smelting operation in the Rocky Mountains in1867 at Black Hawk, CO. From 1879 to 1885, he was a U.S. senator. He also taught courses at the Colorado School of Mines.

The mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources. However, consolidations in the mining and mining service industries, along with a generational departure of experienced industry professionals, is challenging today’s mining companies. These challenges are not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies. They oftentimes lack for operating properties to draw experienced professionals from. Also, juniors have to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. This article discusses some strategies developed by Anatolia Minerals Development (Anatolia) in developing its Çöpler gold project in central Turkey.

INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. Outburst of gas, coal and rock can be defined as sudden release of coal and rock accompanied by large quantities of gas into the working face or other mine workings. The outburst events appeared rarely in some metal mines has generally occurred in salt and coal mines especially bituminous coal mining. The most important factors that influence the occurrence of outbursts are gassiness of the coal seam, tectonics, properties of the coal and rock and vertical and lateral stresses occurring in the seam and or rock or part of the coal seam. This paper describes the problem of gas and coal outbursts in underground coal mines. The outburst events occurred in Zonguldak Coal Basin located on the Black Sea coast was investigated since 1969. Geological and gas conditions of Zonguldak Coal Basin are described. The incidents are analyzed statistically with the criteria such as amount of coal and gas outburst, depth of workings, effect of tectonism, thickness and inclination of coal seams.

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

The Modified Detroit River Outfall No. 2 (MOD DRO-2) will discharge treated wastewater to the Detroit River. Construction of a 6.4-m-diameter, 1.9-km-long tunnel was halted in 2003 by flooding during tunneling with an open face hard rock TBM. A new design for a higher rock tunnel, a ?Modified? design, was completed in 2007 and Notice to Proceed to the tunnel contractor was given in November 2008. Project duration is four years for completion of tunneling and start of outfall tunnel operation. This tunneling project has high groundwater pressure (5 bar), pervious limestone rock of up to 140 MPa (20,000 psi) strength, and hydrogen sulphide in the groundwater. The new tunnel will be connecting to access shafts and outfall diffuser riser shafts previously built for the now-abandoned tunnel. The new tunnel design construction contract, and initial planning to use a pressurized-face (slurry) hard rock TBM are presented.

Cyclic voltammetric and potential step chronoam-perometric techniques were used to study gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Three distinct anodic and one cathodic peaks appear on the voltammogram between -0.50 and 0.80 V vs SCE. The corresponding reactions were proposed to explain the peaks and the passivations. The proposed reactions were in agreement with the effect of pH, cyanide concentration and the rotating speed of the electrode on the magnitude of the peak currents. Cyclic voltammetric tests, with various vertex potentials, were also conducted to examine the proposed reactions. Steady-state currents at various potentials were obtained by potential step chronoamperometric technique and were compared with transient currents obtained by the cyclic voltammetric technique.

Throughout Mexican history, mining has been an important, traditional activity. Before the "Discovery of America," native miners worked a variety of deposits throughout the country, including Mixtec gold and gem mines in Oaxaca State and Aztec gold, silver and copper from mines in Michoacán. The 500th anniversary of Mining in Mexico after the "Discovery of America" was initiated by the Mexican mining sector on April 15, 1991. As early as 1548, when the Guanajuato mining district was discovered, Mexico had become a leading world producer of precious metals. Since then, Mexican mineral production has developed in cycles, responding to changing technological, economic and political conditions. During the 20th century, Mexican mine output reached its peak in the decades of the 1930s and 1940s, when it was producing about 40% of the world's silver, 15% of its lead, 10% of its zinc, 4% of its copper and 3.5% of its gold. In 1990, by way of contrast, these percentages of world output stood at 13.5% for silver, 4.7% for lead, 4.1% for zinc, 3.2% for copper, and 0.43% for gold. The lowest production levels were recorded during the 1960s and 1970s, when Mexicanization of the industry and increasing state controls weakened mineral economics to a point that mineral exploration budgets were sharply reduced or eliminated, along with the industry's future. Only the noble old mining districts continued to supply production, with occasional eruptions of "bonanzas" and new extensions in established mining districts.

To solve the problem of time-consuming and low precision in updating the open-pit vehicle transportation network, a high precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3 + C (DeepLabv3 + Concat) is presented. Then, the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3 + C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the open-pit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicle meeting in open-pit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy was proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines. Besides, the DeepLabv3 + C network is verified by comparing the mIOU (means Intersection Over Union), accuracy, and continuity of road image extraction with the mainstream networks. The road network model constructed in the first step is quantitatively analyzed, and its performance is compared with GPS trajectory clustering methods. At the end of the paper, vehicle running simulation is carried out on the road network model by using Unity (a 3D visualization simulation software). The results show that the road network model constructed by this method can meet the navigation requirements of unmanned vehicles in open-pit mines, and the feasibility of the vehicle meeting strategy is proved.

A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. Since 2001, CVRD is carrying out a modernization project in it’s pelletizing plant’s automation systems, that comprehends instrumentation, control and information systems. In addition, the project includes implementation of advanced control systems, using artificial intelligence techniques, including fuzzy logic, expert systems and dynamic physical models, to increase production, reduce fuel and energy consumption and improve quality. This paper reports CVRD’s experiences in carrying out an optimization project.
