The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

This paper was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to identify risk factors associated with bumps in the prevention of fatalities and accidents in highly stressed, bump-prone ground conditions. Changes of failure mechanism with increasing confinement, from extensional- to shear-dominated failure, are widely observed in the rupture of intact specimens at the laboratory scale and in rock masses. In the previous analysis conducted in 2018, both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests were conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of some specimens of a Utah coal, including the spalling limits, the ratio of apparent unconfined compressive strength (AUCS) to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), the damage characteristics, and the post-yield dilatancy. These mechanical characteristics were found to be strongly anisotropic as a function of the orientation of the cleats relative to the loading direction.

Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

Rhenium, molybdenum and tungsten are the elements demanded by high-end technologies. These metals are found in process solutions in forms of their oxyanions: ReO4-, MoO42- and WO42-. The later two can exist in forms of iso- and/or heteropolyanions. Basically all three metals demonstrate very similar chemical behavior in aqueous solutions. Unfortunately, in their mineral sources these elements commonly accompany each other, like pairs of rhenium-molybdenum or molybdenum-tungsten. Their economical separation is a challenging task.

Over the past several years, Svedala has developed a continuous charge monitor (CCM) for tumbling mills. It consists of a strain gauge embedded into a rubber lifter and associated electronics. This paper describes the results of a research program to evaluate the technical and economical merits of such a device on a SAG mill. The evaluation includes validation through discrete element modelling and comparison to measured static volumetric load. Inclusion of the measurement into a control strategy and its potential for condition monitoring is discussed.

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.

Image processing is a technique that simulates the human vision system. This technique enables applying every statistical or intelligent operation to recognize differences. In this way this new technique is used in quality control systems in most industries. Studying sedimentary rocks is very important from the economic point of view. Some units of sedimentary sequences involve different mineral deposits, hydrocarbon and water resources. Therefore it is important to identify and classify different sedimentary rocks. Descriptive classification of sedimentary rocks is usually based on visual and textural features and chemical composition of a sample. In this paper different samples of a limestone mine in central part of Iran are classified. The samples were collected from different parts of the mine and crushed down in size from 2.58 cm to 3.58 cm. The rock samples were labeled based on percentage of chemical and lithological compositions. Each sample was assigned to one of the distinguished groups. The images of the samples were taken in appropriate environment and processed. A total of 74 features were extracted from the identified rock samples in all images. In order to feature dimensional decrease, principal component analysis method was used. Then Bayesian statistical algorithm was used as a useful tool for classification. Classification Correctness Rate (CCR), calculated for the test data sets are %88, %68, %61 and %72 for the first to fourth class respectively. Therefore it can be inferred that the extracted features of images are appropriate indicators for different samples identification. These precise results besides the advantages of image processing technique, which are increasing speed of operation and decreasing cost, appears to be a desirable success.

Machine guidance and control systems have become more pervasive in the mining industry in recent years but not always from mining-experienced providers. Dozers, motor graders, scrapers, excavators, shovels, draglines, drills and haul trucks are just a few examples of the types of heavy machinery now equipped with global positioning system (GPS)-aided guidance systems. While equipment manufacturers are offering their own software, many only supply solutions for the machines they produce. The proliferation of GPS equipment manufacturers entering the machine guidance and control arena has resulted in a multitude of makes and models of GPS receivers. Some of these companies also produce their own guidance software. But they usually just specialize in a narrow range of heavy machinery. So customers are forced to use multiple systems and face new challenges in implementation, training, reporting and inter-system communication.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA's $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston's Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. It has been approximately four years since IARC reclassified crystalline silica as a “Group One” substance. Since that time, crystalline silica has been considered a human carcinogen. Silicosis is a preventable disease and several aggressive campaigns have been developed to increase awareness of silica dust related problems in the industrial environment. New analytical techniques are being developed to determine quantitatively the amount of crystalline silica in materials. Yet, still much is to be learned about the surface properties of silica and the way in which the disease progresses into full-blown silicosis. This paper will discuss the interaction of free radicals generated by the mineral particles and lung tissue. It is the cell injury and DNA damage that progresses to fibrogenesis. Freshly fractured surfaces of silica contain free radicals. These free radicals play an important role in the stimulation of the alveolar macrophage and the development of the inflammatory reactions leading to the fibrotic response caused by silica. Engineers, scientists, and physicians need to discuss the mineralogy of silica and the technical issues concerning the development of silicosis.

Novel dewatering aids were tested on various coal samples from the U.S. and Canada in laboratory and pilot-scale filtration experiments. The reagents substantially improved the dewatering kinetics and reduced the cake moistures. The cake moistures were typically reduced from 20-30% by weight to 8-14% range in vacuum filtration. When the reagents were used in conjunction with a pressure filter, higher degrees of moisture reductions were achieved. In the present work, the novel dewatering aids were tested using different types of pilot-scale vacuum filters. The results were consistent with those obtained in laboratory experiments.

Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Below, a Chinese miner tackles the universal problem of hard toes in the pit with a jack leg. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). This paper describes the original planning which actually resulted in the opening of a new aggregate plant located in central New York State. This plant, which is now named the Skaneateles Plant of The General Crushed Stone Company is unique in that the plant itself is a departure not only in design but in concept of operation from the normal aggregate plant the company has operated in the past. Whether or not the concepts which resulted in the Skaneateles Plant are economically feasible remain to be proven by the next few years of operation. By way of background data about our company which will help set the stage for this presentation, we currently operate seventeen stone quarries in the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. These quarries range in size from 200,000 tons per year to 1,500,000 tons per year with a total annual stone production of approximately 7,500,000 tons. We also produce about 1,250,000 tons of sand and gravel at six sand and gravel plants, 300,000 cubic yards of ready mix concrete, 1,500,000 tons of bituminous concrete, aglime and other minor construction materials. In many cases we are our own best customer consuming a large percentage of the total production of our own aggregates in our various ready mix and blacktop plants. Up to the concept of the Skaneateles Plant our operating facilities have been of the permanent type as opposed to the moveable or portable type plant. The steps involved in the case history of Skaneateles will begin with the basic economic requirements, market research, geologic surveys, land acquisition, zoning and financing and carry through to the final design and construction. We will attempt to show what some of the problems were, how we interpretted them and how we proceeded to solve them. The current results are apparent and can be analysed. The success of the total concepts of the Skaneateles Plant remains for future analysis.

An incremental analysis based stope design optimization method was developed at Exodus, an underground project located 30 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Traditional underground stope design methods, by manually drawing stope shapes, are typically very time-consuming and lacking of consistency and accuracy. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named '3D Incremental Analysis based Stope Optimization' was created for mine wide stope designs at Exodus. With this unique but practical method, multiple options of mine designs were completed within a short period time, which allowed us to select the optimal cutoff grade and best stope design option for the project.

Particle motion in fluids is a subject of considerable practical importance to engineers working in fields such as hydraulics, river mechanics, chemical engineering and mineral processing. Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict the terminal settling velocities of particles in a fluid medium. The selection of an appropriate mathematical model has, therefore, become a challenging task for practicing engineers. This paper reports on an attempt to identify some of the useful models found in the literature for predicting particle-settling velocities in a fluid under free- and hindered-settling conditions. From this study, it was concluded that there is no well-accepted model validated by experimental data available for predicting particle hindered-settling velocities in a suspension of polydisperse and polydens particles. Collective efforts should, therefore, be made towards developing a hindered-settling model, as this is an absolute prerequisite for many model structures in mineral processing and other engineering disciplines.

Sustainable development of mineral resources is based on a spatial model of the orebody that is only partly known from exploration drilling and associated geological interpretations. As a result, orebody models generated from the available information are uncertain and require the use of stochastic conditional simulation technique. This paper considers three methods for simulating orebody geology: (1) pluri-Gaussian simulation that limits the allowable contacts between the various units; (2) sequential indicator simulation using indicator kriging; and (3) an experimental multiple-point approach that captures some higher-order spatial statistics. The data requirements of the methods, how to meet them in mining applications, and performance characteristics are discussed. The application of these methods in a hypothetical deposit consisting of three geological units provides a comparison and illustrates the advantages of the different simulation approaches.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ Northshore Mining Company operates a magnetic iron ore (taconite) concentrator and pelletizer in Silver Bay, MN. These are two recent cost reduction projects: 1. Rougher Magnetic Separators were upgraded throughout the concentrator; throughput and recovery were simultaneously improved. 2. Green Ball Roll Screens on one agglomeration circuit were upgraded from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch rolls. Throughput improved by 24% from 62 to 77 LTPH. Green ball size distribution improved as an added benefit.

This paper is a description of certain geologic aspects of the Inspiration mining operation. It is not a geologic description of the Inspiration deposit nor an exposition of all the geologic work involved in the development and exploitation of the deposit. A few specific examples of the application of geology and geostatistics to the mining process are given to illustrate the progress that has been made in making the Inspiration Mine more efficient and cost effective, and a statement of the philosophy of geologic applications is offered.

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.
