This paper presents the vibrating mill technology and summarizes the grinding principle of ultra fine grinding. In addition, a variety of operations is described and the benefits of these different operating modes? product size and efficiency are specified. A case study of an industrial application is presented to show the integration of vibrating mills into grinding circuits. The primary focus is the overall process scheme of this technology, the installation and operating costs, as well as the design parameters required for best performance. The vibrating mill can be used in a wide range of applications for process engineering duties. For a wide range of applications, from soft to extremely hard products, which require ultra fine grinding, surface activation or homogenization, the vibrating mill is well proven. Due to its easy operation, versatility and operation efficiency, the PALLA? vibrating mill gains in importance in the mineral processing industry. There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

"This paper offers an introduction to and strategic context for the other papers included in this special UCG edition of the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. South Africa is facing long-term energy security challenges, brought about by a myriad of factors that are somewhat unique or exacerbated in the global context. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a process used to produce synthesis gas from coal in situ, that is, in the coal seam. UCG is an emerging, advanced clean coal technology that offers a potential solution for these challenges, as it can cost-effectively and cleanly liberate vast coal resources in the country that currently cannot be economically exploited using traditional mining technologies. One of the tasks of the South African Underground Coal Gasification Association (SAUCGA) is to advance the development of UCG in South Africa by compiling a technology roadmap. This paper presents the initial findings of the SAUCGA Roadmap (Draft), and contextualizes the technology opportunities and challenges, stakeholders, and provides a basis from which to progress further plans for technology development. Firm development plans and deadlines are not yet possible due to the reliance of the UCG Roadmap on the higher level South African energy policy and regulatory framework. However, the draft roadmap has taken the first step of identifying these policies and stakeholders, and should be seen as the seed from which this embryonic technology and industry can be further developed. IntroductionSouth Africa’s long-term energy security challenges include energy access and affordability, dwindling reserves of accessible bulk primary energy, mounting environmental concerns with all forms of energy generation (especially coal and nuclear), balancing the electricity grid by incorporating an increasing proportion of non-despatchable renewable energy sources, mounting environmental liabilities regarding defunct mining operations, and lastly but by no means less important, fluctuating exchange rates and energy commodity prices.Correctly managed underground coal gasification (UCG) is an emerging, advanced clean coal technology that offers a potential solution for these challenges, as it has been shown to have the potential to cost-effectively and cleanly liberate vast coal resources in the country that currently cannot be economically exploited using traditional mining technologies."

Published parameters from the Mufulira copper in situ leach (ISL) in Zambia are used for order-of-magnitude flow-rate calculations for an envisaged gold ISL in back-filled Witwatersrand stopes. A successful leach operation requires that the porous medium, usually a sand, has a hydraulic conductivity in excess of 5 x10-7m/second (i.e. a permeability >50 millidarcies).Empirical evidence suggests that average linear velocities would be of the order of 60 m/day if the backfill has the grain size of a fine sand. The proposed gold lixiviant would probably be an alkaline or ammonium thiosulphate, not cyanide. The resultant sulphate-rich ground and drainage waters could probably be processed using existing purification techniques to produce gypsum and magnesium/calcium carbonate. Within the next 100 years it is inevitable that solution mining will find widespread application on the Witwatersrand, if not for gold extraction, then certainly for water remediation purposes.

"To reduce production costs and increase efficiency in ageing coal mines, a system that utilizes two shearers in a fully mechanized longwall working face is proposed. Using theoretical and engineering experience, three issues pertaining to the system were determined: (a) the two-shearer mining technique; (b) matching and modifying the equipment; (c) and coal-cutting task allocation for each shearer. Two mining processes are proposed, with the two shearers travelling in either the same or opposing directions. To avoid breakage of chains and pan extrusion of the armoured face conveyor (AFC), the length of the AFC ‘snake’ was controlled. To ensure continuous cutting and transporting of coal, the cross-sectional dimensions of the AFC were checked and the shearer closer to the head drive was modified. Based on the assumption of equal cutting times for each shearer, the meeting position of the two shearers was obtained by using a theoretical model of mining task allocation. Application of this technique at No. 2 Jining Mine, China, has shown remarkable benefits: daily production capacity was increased by 54% and personnel efficiency was improved by 33 t/d per person. IntroductionAll coal mines aim to increase the unit output of the working face to reduce mining costs and improve the economic efficiency of the operation. To achieve this goal, a production model known as one mining face of the mining area has been adopted by most Chinese coal mines (Hu, Meng, and Zhu, 2008; Zhang, Zhang, and Wang, 2000). Under these conditions, the main technical approaches to maximize the output are increasing the width of the working face (Qu, Xu, and Xue, 2009) and accelerating the advancing speed (Robbins, 2000). In coalfields with shallow seams, the width of a fully mechanized face exceeds 300 m (Ju and Zhu, 2015; Fu, Song, and Xing, 2010); in coalfields with deep seams, the width of the face is usually greater than 240 m (Liu et al., 2016; Li et al., 2013). The term ‘super-long working face’ was proposed to describe working faces with a width of over 240 m (Zhao and Song, 2016; Xu et al, 2007) in China. To support these long working faces with rapid advancing speeds, high-powered mining equipment is required (Kulshreshtha and Parikh, 2001, 2002; Tu et al., 2009; Mishra, Sugla,and Singha, 2013). This is easily achieved in newly built mines, but is not a good choice for ageing mines because of the low return on a high investment on account of the limited remaining resources. It is therefore difficult for ageing mines to significantly increase their unit output with the existing mining equipment. This study focused on this problem: two shearers were applied to a longwall fully mechanized working face (LFMWF) to achieve increased unit output."

Water auditing and water efficient practices are evolving as the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. This paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a gold mining environment. It will contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research assists with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and provides, on the ground, steady-state data for ongoing probabilistic modeling underway at most of Newmont?s gold mine operations. Five Newmont case study mine sites including the Tanami Granites Goldmine are central to this PhD water project study. The function of the Tanami-Granites water audit exercise was to measure a controlled flow of various water quality types and set a framework to establish further research for water efficiencies and water conservation in mining.

A retrospective study was conducted on the Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) compensation claims from 1998 to 2008 to determine if the 2008 milestone agreed at the 2003 Mine Health and Safety Summit was achieved. The number and costs of NIHL compensation claims in different commodity sectors and workplaces were collated. A secondary analysis of the ages of employees compensated after 2008 was conducted. A complementary retrospective analysis of audiogram data investigated the percentage loss of hearing (PLH) shift in different homogeneously exposed groups and occupations at two gold mines. The compensation claims analysis indicated a significant decrease in NIHL claims from 1998 to 2008, but the milestone was not achieved. The reason may be either that claims have not been submitted timeously as required by Instruction 171 and that the current submissions are a result of pre-2003 noise exposure, or that employees who were baselined are still developing NIHL owing to ineffective hearing conservation programmes in place in the mining industry. On the basis of best practice for hearing conservation, recommendations are made for leading indicators in hearing conservation programmes and for reducing the risks of NIHL in order to achieve the 2013 milestone.

Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. The key functions of project evaluation are to assess potential profitability and to develop an effective operational design. For mining projects, design aspects include mining methodology, ore treatment methodology and production rates. All of these characteristics impact on project economics and overall value. Resource models, which form the ultimate basis of project evaluation, typically consist of tonnes above cut-off, grade above cut-off and the spatial distribution (connectivity) of tonnes/grade above cut-off, for one or more variables. Dilution, ore loss and metallurgical recovery are all modifying factors applied to the resource model during evaluation and determination of profitability. A key issue is: how is the value determined? In addition to traditional combination of in situ tonnes/grade, the following merit serious consideration: the concentration of deleterious elements, throughput rates, mining/processing costs and - importantly - metallurgical recovery. Geometallurgy is an emerging field targeted at integrating these issues by identifying either direct measures or proxies for throughput (hardness, grindability), recovery (liberation, mineral shape/texture, etc) and concentrate quality from easily collected macro-, meso- and microscopic data. These &apos;geometallurgical variables&apos; drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way. For geometallurgical characterisation to have a real impact on business design, it must enable improved mine planning. When creating spatial estimates for such variables, it is preferable to find proxies that can be measured as close to the intact rock mass as possible. However, spatial estimation of proxies for geometallurgical properties and responses is complex and requires special consideration. Unlike grades, both proxies and absolute measures of geometallurgical variables are not necessarily linear or additive and therefore require very careful geostatistical consideration. In some cases, models must predict extreme values of geometallurgical attributes rather than averages. Incorrect characterisation of metallurgical recovery/throughput can (and has) led to misspecification of the scale of projects, and thus can be seriously value destructive. Aspects of geometallurgy have long been important in iron, bauxite, manganese and coal deposits and are increasingly on the radar for base and precious metal miners. However, as more metallurgically complex deposits are developed and mining of large-scale, low-grade deposits becomes more commonplace, the importance of characterising the metallurgical response in order to generate properly optimised projects will rapidly increase. It is possible that in many `traditional&apos; (ie grades and tonnes) reserve models, the variables that drive the project are missing!

This paper describes and sets in context the commercially proven uranium extraction processes. It also discusses some of the technologies that are currently being pursued with the aim of reducing costs and overcoming a number of technical issues that are faced by process designers and operators. In doing so, opportunities for the transfer of extraction technology from other industries/commodities are identified. The key processing areas that are examined include: ?The influence of mineralogy. The type of uranium mineralization and the nature of its association within a particular deposit will have a major impact on process route selection. Uranium minerals are classified according to their influence on extractive metallurgy. As the uranium price has risen in recent times, so opportunities are increasing for the recovery of uranium from less conventional resources such as phosphates and fossil fuels. ?The opportunities for employing techniques aimed at reducing the capital and operating costs of the overall process such as heap leach and beneficiation. Preconcentration by screening, gravity separation and radiometric sorting can potentially reduce the mass flow to the downstream leach and recovery plants. ?Purification or separation of uranium in carbonate systems. While it is possible to directly precipitate uranium from clarified leachate, the presence of impurities such as vanadium, molybdenum and others may dictate that ion exchange or selective precipitation is employed. Advances have been made in other industries in terms of improved ion exchange equipment aimed at reducing resin inventories and hence costs. ?Separation in acid leach systems. Earlier developments included the use of combined SX-IX systems (Eluex or Bufflex) and the introduction of continuous countercurrention exchange (CCIX). Column SX has found a ready application to uranium in view of the rapid extraction kinetics. With the renewed interest in uranium processing, efforts are being redirected towards further development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) as a means of driving down capital and operating costs. ?Extraction in a chloride environment. Australia and Namibia are desert countries where good quality water comes at a cost. However, both have access to saline water from either the ocean or subterranean aquifers. The issues associated with operating a uranium extraction operation in such environments is discussed. ?Extraction from less conventional sources. Recent price increases for U3O8 have resulted in a number of companies examining the recovery of uranium from sources such as fossil fuels and phosphate deposits. Both of these areas were examined in the 1970s and 1980s and a number of approaches were commercialized. The paper reviews the extraction options.

Approximately 850 groundwater samples were collected over a 29 300 km2 region of the semi-arid Northwestern Cape during the site selection phase of the South African radioactive waste disposal project. The purpose of the geostatistical investigation was primarily to delineate metallogenic occurrences and provinces which might exist below the thin veneer of surficial material and could thus interfere with the suitability of the site, and to quantify the distribution patterns of groundwater parameters in order to establish a relationship to local and regional geology. Up to 34 variables were analysed for each sample. Structural analysis revealed that the study area is statistically uniform. The variables have low correlation coefficients, with the exception of major ions, indicating a general poor degree of interrelationship between the spatial distribution patterns of the different variables. On the other hand, the long semivariogram range of the majority of variables, which reaches 70 km in cases, demonstrates their continuity on a regional scale. Kriging, which was repeated for each parameter, reveals that most variables, particularly trace metals, have distribution trends which are not influenced by local geomorphology or surface lithology. A 50 km wide, 220 km long metallogenic province, defined by kriging, could possibly reflect a broad metallogenic imprint on the basement and could represent a target area for prospecting. Kriging also reveals the possible existence of a wrench faulting system which may well have influenced the Namaqualand coastal graben and the western boundary of the Karoo.

Microwave technology has for decades been a tool for astronomers to map and understand the complexities of the universe its composition and extent. It is also used on a laboratory scale by spectroscopists to examine properties of atomic and molecular compounds. In this novel work we will introduce microwave technology to be used for the investigation of liquid slag structures. The preliminary results indicate that the alteration of the slag composition could be correlated to the measured microwave refractive index. The paper describes a computer procedure for evaluating and selecting recoverable reserves in a mine worked by sublevel stoping. The boundaries of the volume to be mined are optimally defined by means of the 3-dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, separately applied to both sides of the panels. The procedure, which has been developed for Masua Mine (Sardinia), also provides for smoothing the optimized boundaries, positioning the drilling drifts, interactive design of drilling fans and calculation of tonnage and grade of each volley. These tonnages and grades form the input of another procedure evolved for production planning.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Notches are used routinely for measuring the flow rate of water with free surface flows. As far as can be ascertained, no work has been done to investigate the performance of these flow rate measurement devices for non-Newtonian suspensions. The Flow Process Research Centre at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology has investigated the flow rate of kaolin and bentonite suspensions from a tank for two notch shapes, namely rectangular and triangular, and for 3 different concentrations of each suspension. The notches were calibrated using water and then the kaolin and bentonite suspensions were tested in them. The rheological characterisation of the fluids was done with a Paar Physica MC-1 rotary viscometer fitted with a cup and roughened bob. Analysis of the results shows a significant increase in discharge coefficient with increase in concentration, and the discharge coefficient has been correlated to the yield stress. This is the first such study, and further investigation is needed to confirm and extend these findings.

Day-to-day operations on the Broken Hill mine of the Black Mountain Mineral Development (BMMD) Company require a detailed knowledge of the distribution of the ore minerals within the orebody. The data are acquired by systematic underground diamond drilling of the orebody and subsequent geological and analytical borehole logging. These data are then captured onto a database, available for further analysis. Before mining commences in a mining block, copper, lead, zinc, silver and bismuth assay values, and the specific gravity of each sample, are extracted from the database. 3-dimensional variogram and kriging calculations are performed for each geological zone; for all the metals of interest. A computer representation of the mining block in the form of an ore model is then built using these kriged data. From these ore models information is extracted as required by the Geology Department on the mine, and used in numerous operations. These include: daily grade control to supply optimum feed grades to the treatment plant; the compilation of short, medium and long term production schedules; orebody outline definitions for the detailed planning of mining operations; ore resource calculations. The system has been modified and updated since its inception and provides timely information in a production environment.

This paper outlines a simple methodology for mineral characterization, developed as part of the Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) managed research project P777 ?The Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of Clerici?s Solution)?. The project was sponsored by De Beers, Rio Tinto and Iluka Resources. Heavy mineral characterization of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes is frequently conducted using laboratory heavy liquid analysis. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (?heavy?) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilized at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. Beyond this value organic liquids can be used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0. For the characterization of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (e.g. anatase RD 3.9, rutile RD 4.2, ilmenite RD 4.4?4.7 and zircon RD4.6?4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to Clerici?s solution. Clerici?s solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by few laboratories worldwide, with costs reflecting the chemical costs, infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (e.g. blood testing of exposed staff). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation has been developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstates solutions, that can replace Clerici?s solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (e.g. -250 +150microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 4.0 is outlined and the comparison of results with Clerici?s solution presented. In addition, preliminary work on density fractionation of zircon samples is presented. Zircon fractionation relates to their inclusion, radionuclide content and metamictization.

It is almost eight years to the day when we launched the original SAMREC Code in March 2000. Since that date I think the SA minerals industry has matured beyond recognition in its approach to reserve and resource reporting, and I believe we can be justifiably proud of that progress. Many of those companies that have led the way in reporting standards are listed on our sponsors list. We thank them for their sponsorship but even more for their considerable support in all aspects of the SAMCODE organization. Matt Mullins, my co-speaker here today, has been instrumental in the revision of the SAMREC Code over a long period of time and also took up the reigns with the SAMVAL Code after the retirement of Rob Croll. I would like to formally thank Matt for his immense contribution in producing the two Codes; he can take great pride in the final product and fully deserves the many accolades that we have already received from our international counterparts. He has done all this whilst still maintaining a very demanding day job at BHPBilliton. Matt will be the first to admit that he has received tremendous support from more than 100 people who participated in the various working groups, many of whom are employed by our sponsors. There are obviously too many to mention by name but they deserve a big vote of thanks for their personal contributions. KingIn presenting his paper Dr W. J. Whiten outlined the basic concepts on which the control model was based and emphasized the fact that empirical models based as much as possible on theory were used to simulate each unit of the crushing plant. The final parameters of each model were computed using data collected from the plant. Unfortunately, the system did not permit accurate extrapolation but was successful when operating in the region from which the parameters were calculated.He concluded from the results of the test work that the crusher amperage was a critical parameter and that the utilization of the model gave a 15 per cent increase in the plant output. This was because the model predicted that a marginally fine grind would provide a significant increase in throughput. Dr Whiten elaborated on what constituted the multiple spline regression, explaining that it was a least-squares curve-fitting technique in one or more dimensions, where the calculation of coefficients in analytic expressions was replaced by the calculation of typical points on a very smooth curve called a spline function. The emphasis was placed on the shape and value of the curve or curves instead of on the coefficients as in analytic regression. Loveday commented that the simulation was unusual in that the optimum throughput was considered to be the maximum throughput, which, surely, was limited by the crusher size. He also emphasized the importance of the interaction between both crushing and grinding circuits and added that in practice the optimum operating conditions were inter-dependent. Dr Whiten replied that in the case of the plant under consideration, the crushing process was not, in fact, the limiting operation.Mr C. E. Clifford indicated that the model was being used to simulate a number of crushing and grinding circuits at Mount Isa Mines. He reported that the model simulated the circuit satisfactorily for primary and secondary gap settings of 0,625 in. to 0,375 in., but that adjustment had to be made to the model parameters for gap settings of 0,250 in. to 0,125 in.In reply to a question from Dr D. M. Hawkins, Dr Whiten said that he preferred to use low-order splines with smaller segments rather than high-order spline functions with large segments."
