"INTRODUCTION Over the past several years a new type of cascade impactor that utilizes small nozzle diameters (micro-orifice nozzles) has been under development (Kuhlmey et al., 1981; Marple et al., 1981). The small nozzle dimensions allow for particles to be collected as small as 0.024 µm aerodynamic diameter on the last stage of the impactor. To obtain a reasonable flow rate of 30 I min - i through the impactor, a large number of nozzles (up to 2000) are required per stage.Furthermore, by locating the nozzles of multi-nozzle stages in a prescribed manner (described in detail by Marple et al., 1981) and rotating the impaction plates relative to the nozzle plates, uniform deposits can be achieved on the impaction plates. As described by Marple et al. (1981), the advantages of a uniform deposit impactor over the conventional impactor that collects particles only beneath stationary nozzles are: (1) maximum use of the impaction substrate surface, reducing both particle bounce (if substrates are greased) and tare weights of the substrates (if particle mass is measured gravimetrically); (2) deposited particles can be analyzed for elemental composition by X-ray fluorescence (Dzubay and Rieke!, 1978); and (3) the pressure in the impactor can be kept relatively high compared to low pressure impactors that depend on a large slip correction to achieve small particle collection (some types of particles may evaporate at low pressures). The work described in this paper investigates two additional advantages of a uniform deposit impactor. These are: (1) the possibility of collecting two separate deposits at one time on one stage for two types of analysis techniques, and (2) the possibility of utilizing piezoelectric quartz crystal impaction plates more effectively by eliminating the deposit location sensitivity nature of the crystals (Schulze-Frohlich, 1981 ).MICRO-ORIFICE UNIFORM DEPOSIT IMPACTOR (MOUDI)A photograph of an eight-stage MOUDI is shown in Fig. 1. Each stage body of the impactor supports the impaction plate for the stage above and the nozzle plate for the stage below as shown in Fig. 2. "In-mine airborne particulate samples have been successfully collected and the relative amounts of diesel and coal determined using the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method. This method allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the airborne respirable dust concentration in us underground coal mines. Samples were taken near the feeder-breaker, on haulage vehicles, and in the returns. Sampling methodologies were developed for coal-only and diesel-only particulate reference samples with sufficient filter loading for the LRQA method. A statistical analysis of reproducibility has been carried out. Samples have been collected simultaneously at two locations using the LRQA and the size-selective sampling methods. Good agreement between the two methods has been found.INTRODUCTIONThe goal of this research has been to develop the Laser Raman Quantitative Analysis (LRQA) method to measure the composition of respirable particulate, i.e. the fractions of coal and of diesel particulate, in the mine ambient air. In earlier Bureau of Mines sponsored research, we successfully demonstrated that the LRQA method could be used to measure the fraction of Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) in coal/diesel particulate mixtures which were prepared in the laboratory.(I) 'The immediate objective was to test and refine this LRQA method on samples collected in a diesel underground coal mine.Specific objectives required to meet this goal include:I) Develop in-mine sample collection methods which will insure sufficient particulate loading on filters for LRQA. ,2) Develop methodology for in-mine collection of reference samples (""coal-only"" and ""diesel-only"" filters) which arc required for quantitative LRQA. 3) Analyze precision and accuracy of the LRQA method. 4) Compare composition measurements with another analytical method, i.e. the University of Minnesota/Bureau of Mines size selective sampling Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI) method.An advantage of the LRQA method is that it allows analysis of filters which have been collected by a method similar to that used to determine the respirable dust concentration in US underground coal mines. No new sampling instruments and techniques are required. Transfer of sample from collection substrate to analysis substrate is not necessary. Furthermore, other analyses can be made on the same sample since the technique is nondestructive."

[The geophone has occupied a prominent position as a mine signalling device since its first introduction. The Bureau has carried out tests at different times with a view to improving the early geophones. The following paper describes briefly the adaption of the vacuum-tube audio frequency Amplifier to a new form of geophone. It is not intended to convey the idea that the results described are sufficient to warrant the drawing of definite conclusions as to the practicability of the electrical geophone, but the data and tests liven herein are made public because of their possible use to the industry and as a result of inquiries received as to the feasibility of such adaptions and modifications of the early geophones. Because of the limited time available to the authors, only one geophone with its auxiliary amplifier was constructed. As is well known, two geophones are necessary in order to determine the direction of a sound. Although the principles upon which the electrical geophone operates appear to be fundamentally correct, it is not possible to state whether two such devices 'rill function as efficiently, (as regards determining direction of sound) as the present geophone. In order to operate efficiently as a direction finder, the amplifiers of the electrical geophone must each amplify with exactly the same degree of magnitude. By proper design and adjustment this can probably be accomplished without greatly complicating the design. inasmuch as audio frequency amplification is used, no tuning; is necessary as is the case with tuned radio-frequency circuits. The same filament and plate batteries can be used to operate the amplifiers and by the use of dry cell tubes, requiring shall filament and plate currents, it if believed that a compact, portable and practical instrument can be evolved. Further investigations of the electrical geophone should be conducted to determine the points outlined in this preliminary report.]

[Microscopic methods have proved to be valuable assets in the study of low-grade ores. While the chemical assay u a ally discloses tine total content of valuable metals in such an ore, a thorough knowledge of the nature of the ore should form the from which to prepare an efficient means of recovery. In the treatment of low-grade ores, inefficient recovery, as indicated bay the amount of valuable mineral permitted to go to waste in the tailings, is too frequently the rule rather than the exception, As methods of recovery become more efficient, many low-grade 10 mineral A posits suddenly assume o commercial significance, In much of this material the minerals are so finely disseminated and intermixed that identification even by microscopic methods is a difficult matter. The application of microchemical qualitative analysis with the aid of new device described in this paper, will solve many of the problems of identification encountered in the study of low-grade potential ores. In these ores, especially, the limitations of ordinary microscopic methods are liable to become very great. The microchemical tests obtained by applying a standard set of reagents to a polished knoting whether or not a tarnishing action develops, have considerable value but arc far from being infallible. It is well-known that electrolytic effects are apt to affect seriously the diagnostic value of the tests, end this effect is encountered much more frequently in dealing with finely desseminated minerals. resort to microchemical qualitative analysis, therefore, becomes indispensable.]

Researchers at the Bureau of Mines have developed a technique for re- generating chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching solutions used in metal surface treatment operations. The technique utilizes a diaphragm cell equipped with a cation-selective membrane to oxidize cr3+ to cr6+ at the anode and to remove copper, the major metallic contaminant, at the cathode. Normally, spent etchant is discarded after approximately 3 days of use. Using the electrolytic cell, the etchant can be used for a year without replacement, From data obtained from industrial-scale cells, the installation of a regeneration cell with a 1,000-gal catholyte- holding tank has been estimated to save at least $240 per day, The payback period for the investment is estimated to be about 10 mo or less. Because the magnitude of these cost savings will vary at different locations, several graphs are presented to aid in calculating payback for a specific site. Using these graphs and the capital costs presented in this study, the payback period can be determined for installing a regeneration cell with a 500- or a 1,000-gal catholyte-holding tank in an existing surface treatment plant.

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes our recent investigations of the potential role of silicon-oxygen based free radical species in the biochemical mechanism of the lung injury caused by the inhalation of freshly fractured silica. The impetus for this study came from the following observations. Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of acute and chronic silicosis. Chronic silicosis is characterized by the development of sharply marked concentric fibrotic nodules in the lung. This occurs over a period of several decades with the development of progressive respiratory impairment. In contrast, acute silicosis is manifested by the filling of the alveoli with an amorphous lipoproteinaceous exudate within a short period after exposure, and rapid development of respiratory disability often leading to fatality. Most studies on the pathogenesis of silicosis have focused on the elucidation of cellular mechanisms of cell injury and the development of chronic silicosis. Because pulmonary responses to crystalline silica are distinctly different for · the acute and chronic silicosis, we hypothesized that the acute response is associated with some unique properties of ·freshly formed silica particle surfaces, due to the formation of some reactive chemical species caused by the rupturing or the silicon-oxygen bonds. In occupations involving drilling, tunneling and sandblasting operations acute silicosis can be correlated with this unique surface reactivity of silica. The formation or reactive species was demonstrated, using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy (Dalal et al., 1986; Fuibini et al., 1987; Hochstrasser and Antononi, 1972). Grinding of quartz crystals under ultra high vacuum (10-10 torr) leads to the formation of Si- and SiO• radicals and these radicals are quenched by exposure to air and other gases (Hochstrasser and Antonini, 1972). ESR signals have also been reported from micronized quartz samples that were evacuated at 413 K (Bolls et al., 1983). In order to find a more direct relationship of such radicals to acute silicosis, we made ESR measurements on quartz dusts freshly ground in ambient air and found- that indeed grinding under ambient environment leads to the formation of the Si• and SiO• type of radicals which decay on storing the dusts in air or in biological buffers (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988). The Si• and SiO radical formation on grinding has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, we recently found that •OH radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz (Dalai et al., 1988; Shi et al., 1988; Vallyathan et al., 1988). We have subsequently carried out detailed cytotoxicity and biological assays on freshly made as well as aged quartz dusts. As summarized below, the results provide new insight into the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis."

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

Fluorine-containing polymers are comparatively new materials that exhibit very desirable characteristics not usually found in non-fluorine containing polymers. Among these characteristics are heat and flame resistance, desirable electrical properties, and chemical inertness. Polytetrafluoroethylene and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene are examples of such polymers commercially available. In practical applications it is reasonable to expect thermal position of these materials if they are subject to high enough temperatures. The temperatures at which thermal decomposition takes place and the nature of the gaseous products of decomposition are considered pertinent data in intelligent use of these materials. The purpose of the tests discussed herein was to determine: (1) The temperatures at which gases were produced when small specimens of the two polymers were located and (2) determine the identity of the major constituents of gaseous products.

"An Arizona mining company recently demonstrated a new use for the geophone by successfully locating leaks in compressed-air lines which were buried under from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 feet of fine rock fill. The following information is abstracted from data sent to the Bureau of Mines by the superintendent of the mine.The company has two parallel main compressed-air lines, about one and one-half miles long, buried under an average of two feet of fine rock fill. One of the lines is a four-inch high-pressure (1000 pounds) main, and the other line a ten-inch low pressure (90 pounds) main. The two mains are separated by a 10 to 3C foot interval, and run from the compressor plant to the No. 2 shaft, where they are taken underground. A pump line is also buried in the immediate vicinity.Several leaks, not audible enough to be located, were developed in the Alms. Various =Abode were suggested that did not seem practicable to the management. Finally, the company obtained a Bureau of Mines' geophone and experimented with it. The first test& were conducted while the pumps were running, and while there was noise on the concrete pavement, all of Which caused so much vibration in the geophone that it was impossible to detect the leaks.The second attempt was made at the close of the day shift when the compressors were not operating and when the pumps could be shut down. The valves in the far end of the surface lines were closed, and the lines were pumped to full pressure (90 and 1,000 pounds respectively).Geophone readings were then taken at 7 or 8 foot intervals directly see the lines. Several leaks some very large in the high-pressure line were audible with the geophone at distances varying from 15 to 30 feet. A con-le leak in the low-pressure line was found at a distance of 10 feet. detecting the leaks, no difficulty was found in locating them exactly. ""At this time"", laid the superintendent of the mine, are unable to large a leak must be in order to be located under two feet of loose geophone. The fill we worked over was quite loose and dry and unfavorable for the work in question. However, we have no that the instrument is a valuable adjunct to our business""."

"SummaryAs part of an effort.to understand the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal, which is important in studies of respirable dust due to mining, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density (SEO) theory were applied to calculate the crush zone size under a cutting tool in coal. This · zone is the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range. The model used in these calculations is a boundary element program containing a failure criterion based on the SEO theory. The boundary element program calculates linear elastic stresses at numerous points in the coal material ahead of a cutting bit. These stresses arc then input to a subroutine called critical ftaw length and orientation (CFLO) which uses the SED theory to determine the CFLO for a small crack at the boundary element stress computation point. The extent of crushing is based on earlier postulates about . the role of inherent flaws in a fragmentation process. To form 1 to 10 µm fragments requires firstly a local stress strong enough to activate flaws with a characteristic length less than 1 to 10 µm and secondly, a flaw density sufficient to provide an average spacing between flaws also on the order of 1 to 10 µm. The locus of active lO µm ftaws represents the maximum possible extent of fine fragmentation in the 10 µm or less size range assuming that a sufficient inherent flaw density exists. The approach offers a first order approximation to the extent of crushing under a tool tip. The size and shape of the crush zone volume is affected by the attack angle and geometry of the tool.IntroductionFine fragment generation in the 1 to 10 µm size range under the action of a generic coal cutting tool may be explained on the basis of fracture mechanics which suggests two major sources of fine fragments: first in a crush zone near the tool tip and second by shear fracturing. along major macrocrack surfaces (Zipf and Bieniawski, 1988a). In this paper, fracture toughness measurements and the strain energy density theory are used to calculate the crush zone size. This zone represents the major source of fine fragments in the 1 to 10 µm size range and understanding the mechanical factors controlling its size represents a first step toward using fracture mechanics to characterize the ·tendency of various coals to produce undesirable fine fragments."

"SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

"Carbon dioxide has been used for extinguishing electrical fires of many kinds (1, 3, 4) 3/ and more recently has been applied to some extent in fighting coal-mine fires (5). This report is concerned with the possibility of an electric current being conducted from a live power source, such as a trolley wire, across the impinging spray of carbon dioxide gas, to a metallic discharge nozzle, and then being grounded through the body of the person holding or touching the container. Rose and. Skinner (5) have described a case in which a fall of roof coal had brought down the trolley without creating a dead shot. The current was conducted in part through the loose coal to the rail, causing ignition of the coal. The fire was successfully extinguished with carbon dioxide.Dielectric data on pure carbon dioxide gas and liquid have been reported by Quinn and Jones (2). For the gas, the dielectric constants range from 1.00971 (35°C., 10 atmospheres) to 1.3072 (70°C., 151 atmospheres); for the liquid, 1.6016 (0°C., 50 atmospheres). Compared with the dielectric constant of air (1.0006, 1 atmosphere), these data, indicate that carbon dioxide in both gaseous and liquid forms is a very poor conductor of electricity, of the same order as air. 4/"

Problems of design involving the high-temperature characteristics of materials of construction have focused attention on tungsten, the metal with the highest melting point. To study the properties of this metal a method was needed to produce tungsten of high purity easily and consistently. The Bureau of Mines has made tungsten metal in massive form on a laboratory scale by hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexafluoride (WF6). Metal made in this manner had a purity of 99.99 percent or better, with reference to all detectable impurities, including gases. The process tolerated a wide variation in operating conditions, and the results with respect to total impurities as low as 0.01 percent were reproducible.

Design a high-production coal mining machine with inherent low dust generation and low frictional ignition potential. Approach Constant depth linear cutting (CDLC) provides a longterm solution to excessive dust generation from shearers and continuous mining machines through new design of the rotary drum culling system. Problems with rotary drum systems, which must be eliminated to control the dust generation at the source, include the effect of a con¬stantly varying depth of cut using fixed bit spacing, secondary fragmentation of already broken coal and, frictional heating of bits and entrainment of dust by fanning action due to high drum rotational speed, Each bit on a rotary drum enters the coal face at zero depth of cut, goes to some maximum depth at the horizontal centerline during sump, and exits at zero depth.

"Ferrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade ore in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore is depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that will include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that woo set up to direct and supervise the work were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606, Manganese Investigations. 1. Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

Condensate waters from the Bureau of Mines Synthane process for coal gasification have been investigated by mass spectrometric methods to determine the organic contaminants. Waters from the gasification of six coals were extracted with methylene chloride, yielding 0.6 to 2.4 weight-percent extractable material. Using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and low-voltage mass spectrometry, 60 to 80 percent of the extract was found to be phenolic. About 20 organic contaminants have been identified and are present in the condensate waters from each coal gasified. The relative distribution of contaminants in the condensate water was nearly the same for the six coals gasified under various conditions; phenolic compounds were the most abundant in all cases.

Fused - salt electrorefining has been successfully applied to the purification of vanadium metal . The electrolyte used in this refining technique was sodium chloride to which had been added 3 to 6 percent vanadium as vanadium dichloride . The average deposition current efficiency was 91 percent . Oxygen and nitrogen , the impurities in commercially produced vanadium metal , were reduced by two - thirds of the amount contained in the feed material . Hardness of the vanadium- metal product was reduced from an initial 97 Rockwell B ( RB ) to a minimum of 35 Rg . The reduction of these impurities markedly improved the plasticity of the final product obtained by melting the crystalline cell metal into small ingots . These ingots could be given a 99 - percent cold reduction by rolling before edge cracking appeared . Growing interest in high - purity vanadium and the industrial need for purer metals and improved alloys for use under high temperatures and high speeds have demanded the elimination and/or control of impurities . Accordingly, research to eliminate or control the undesirable impurities has been expanded .
