"Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, various mines in the Poughkeepsie Gulch and Mineral Point mining districts were examined by C. R. Wilfley, W. R. Hamilton, .and N. E. Wvvlwy, Jr., Bureau Of 'Mines engineers, in July and August 1943, July 1944, and September 1945. In a subsequent report a proposal was made to evaluate this isolated area 'of some 15 square miles located in Ouray and San Juan Counties, Colo.Reconnaissance work in the area was begun in June 1946. Mapping and sampling were begun in July and was completed in Pougkeepsie Gulch and extended westward to include the Hendrick Gulch area of the east side of Ironton Park. Project work was recessed for the winter on October 15, 1946 after approximately 6 square miles of the Poughkeepsie Gulch,district been mapped and 801 samples had been taken.In this report the physical features, climate, and ore deposits districts are described, and a brief history of mining and production lead, zinc; and silver is given.The individual mines and prospects in, the area are described in detail.A list of patented claims and ownerships is given in appendix I, and analyses of samples are tabulated in appendix II.The San Juan preliminary project was directed by Paul T. Allsman, chief, Salt Lake City Branch, Mining Division and was supervised by William M. Traver, Jr., supervising engineer, Colorado Field. The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. A critical study of the wet Thiogen process for extracting sulphur from the smoke of smelters is one of several investigations related to the general smelter-smoke problem that are being conducted under the direction of the Bureau of Mines. Part of the work done in the pyrometallurgical section of the cooperative metallurgical exhibit of the Bureau of Mines at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition during 1915 related to this investigation, and at the expiration of the exposition, the work was continued in the labora- tories of the Bureau of Mines in the Hearst Memorial Mining Building of the University of California, Berkeley, Cal., where a mining experiment station of the bureau has been established under the cooperative agreement with the University of California. Early in the spring of 1915, when plans were being made to co- operate with several metallurgical interests, the Thiogen Co. proposed to the Bureau of Mines that, along with the studies of various pro- posed methods for eliminating sulphur dioxide from smelter smoke, there should be included a study of the wet Thiogen process. In the study as outlined it was proposed to determine whether it would be technically and commercially feasible to use the, process for the recovery of elemental sulphur from the sulphur dioxide in waste smelter gases. Although there had been no large-scale work with the process, either in the laboratory or at a smelter, representatives of the metallur- gical and mining industry had shown considerable interest in the proposed method, and the desire had been expressed that a better knowledge of the possibilities of the process should be obtained. Thus, cooperation with the Thiogen Co. seemed justified by the in- terests of the metallurgical industry, and by the conservation promised by the recovery of a product of market value from what is otherwise a waste, and in some instances a serious nuisance. In accepting the responsibility for directing this investigation, the officials of the Bureau of Mines were necessarily free to conduct the work in the manner they considered necessary to determine the facts. It was also understood that any information obtained was to be made available to all who might be interested and might be printed in a Bureau of Mines report. To cover the cost of laboratory equipment and supplies, and the payment of salaries of assistants, other than Bureau of Mines employees, the Thiogen Co. in May, 1915, deposited with the cooperative metallurgical exhibit fund a sum considered sufficient to warrant starting the laboratory investi- gation. The origin and organization of this fund has been described by Clevenger and the author." In outlining the program for this investigation it was hoped that ultimately a small complete plant would be erected and the investi- gation center around the operation of the plant. However, pre- liminary to the erection of the plant, a laboratory study of the proc- ess was considered necessary, as the technical features of the process could be determined, it was believed, as satisfactorily on a smaller scale as on the scale first proposed. However, it was realized at the time that it would not be possible to determine so satisfactorily or definitely the commercial possibilities of the process on the scale of work adopted as in the larger operating plant. With this fact in mind it was planned that, if the study of the technical features on a laboratory scale gave sufficient promise of the process being commer- cially feasible, an operating unit should, if possible, be constructed later, and that more definite information concerning the commercial prospects should be determined. The investigations were started in June, 1915. In June and July work was confined entirely to small-scale laboratory tests, in which a careful study of the chemical reactions involved was made. In August, tests on a larger scale were started, and these were con- tinued until December, small-scale tests being made at the same time. On December 1, 1915, all work on the Thiogen process was discon- tinued temporarily, as the close of the exposition necessitated moving the laboratories. Work on the Thiogen process was started again in January, 1916, in the laboratories of the new mining experiment sta- tion at Berkeley, Cal., and was continued during the spring of 1916 until a point was reached where it was felt that the essential parts of the process had been carefully covered, and that some definite state- ments concerning the technical features and possibilities of the process, as given in this report, were warranted.

[As part of the Bureau of Mines effort to provide thermodynamic data for advancement of mineral resources technology, the standard Gibbs energies of formation (?G°f) of MnS (manganese sulfide) and Fe0.9 S (pyrrhotite) were investigated with a high-temperature galvanic cell employing stabilized Zr02 (zirconia) as the electrolyte. Potential measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, MnS, MnO, S02 (g, 1 atm)//Zr02//02(g, 0.0114 atm), Pt with the overall cell reaction MnS (s) + 1.5 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = MnO (s) + S02 (g) . (1) These results give the standard Gibbs energy of formation of MnS for the reaction Mn (s) + 0.552 (g) = MnS (s) (2) ?G°f = -66.487 + 15.19 x 10-3T±0.207 kcal/mole (896.4 - 1,208.1 K) (3) where temperature (T) is expressed in kelvins. Similar measurements were obtained for the cell Pt, FeO .9S, Fe304 , S02 (g, 1 atm) //Zr02//02 (g, 0.0114 atm) , Pt with the overall cell reaction 10/3 FeO .9 S (s) + 16/3 02 (g, 0.0114 atm) = Fe.,04 (s) +10/3 S02 (g). (4) These results yield the standard Gibbs energy of formation for the reaction 0.9 Fe (s) + 0.5 S2 (g) = Fe0.9 S (s) (5) ?G°f = -35.229 + 12.67 x 1073T+-0.104 kcal/mole (839.5 - 1,086.6 K). Develop a new method for coal mint pillar stability evaluation and design based on pillar load measurements. Approach A novel approach to chain pillar stability evaluation and design for longwall coal mining panels has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The evaluation approach uses an INTEGRITY FACTOR as the criterion for stability. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells developed by the Bureau are used to measure stresses in a pillar for stability evaluation. The results are used to improve the pillar design.

Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

"INTRODUCTIONMine ventilation planning is an engineering design process requiring a substantial amount of qualitative knowledge obtained through experience. A concept for a knowledge-based ventilation expert system was developed by Ramani and Prasad (1987).1 11 An expert system based on the above scheme was conceived with the motivation of providing a tool to facilitate decision making for ventilation engineers in the context of computer assisted ventilation planning. Options for the implementation of the system were then examined and several commercial, personal computer (PC) based shells assessed toward this end. The options considered, the evaluation criteria and procedure arc discussed in Prasad ·and Ramani, (1989).Cll Following the above study, a scheme was developed to represent the components of the expert system.<3> Evaluation of several commercial shells indicated that there was none available which permitted interfacing with a large external algorithmic program. It was therefore decided to develop the KBS in LISP and custom build the necessary interfacing routines to ""hook out• to the network analysis program (NAP). Due to this choice of development strategy, the computer implementation aspects of the KBS arc important as all the interfacing components had to be developed with the basic tools offered by LISP.In this paper, the implementation of the knowledge based system (KBS), in terms of its component, the interfaces among the various components of the KBS and between the KBS and the user arc described. The ventilation KBS consists of an AES (analysis expert system), an IES (interpretation expert system)' and an algorithmic NAP (network analy5is program). The AES analyzes the input to the NAP considering the legal 5tipulations governing the various mine ventilation network parameters and principles of good ventilation, helping the ventilation engineer develop and represent represent the problem for solution by the NAP. The IES diagnoses the output from the NAP in terms of the critical parameters in the context of the given problem. Thi5 loop is continued till a satisfactory salution is obtained. The implementational details of the AES, the IES and the approaches to the validation of the expert system arc also discussed."

Reduce the cost and incidence of low-back pain in underground coal mines through redesign of materials-handling tasks. Background Approximately 25 pct of all injuries in mining involve trauma to the hack. These injuries account for at least 30-40 pct of worker compensation payments made by the industry, are the leading cause of lost work days in mining, and have been estimated to cost the industry $50 million annually. It is clear that the traditional approach to reduce back injuries (i.e., training) has been largely ineffective. Thus, new approaches are necessary to control this problem. This document briefly describes methods that can be used to redesign hazardous materials-handling tasks to reduce the threat of worker injury. Approach A model for redesigning materials-handling tasks is shown in figure 1. The model outlines the sequence of steps that should be followed (and questions that should be asked) when developing new strategies for handling materials in underground coal mines. A critical examination of the current supply-handling system is the first step to developing safer materials-handling procedures. The purpose is to identify hazardous tasks that can be modified to reduce injury risk. Accident analysis (a review of past accident records) and task analy¬sis (usually a videotaped analysis of hazardous jobs or tasks) arc effective methods of distinguishing areas where job redesign is needed.

The basic concepts of reliability predictions are introduced along with the reliability models and assumptions used for this particular evaluation. The results of the reliability predictions are for ground-fixed and naval-sheltered environments.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has classified diesel exhaust as a potential human carcinogen. Though standards for diesel particulate matter (DPM) in the work place have not been established, concern for the health of miners is prompting mine operators to consider methods for reducing worker exposure to diesel exhaust. Approach One of many methods for reducing DPM being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of additives in diesel fuel to improve combustion. Research Results Three fuel additives have been tested in Caterpillar and Deutz diesel engines which are similar to types used in underground mines. One iron-based additive containing ferrous picrate had no effect on emissions. A second iron-based additive containing ferrocene reduced DPM between 5 and 45 pet depending on engine operating conditions. The 37-pct reduction for an 8-minute duty cycle, which includes a wide range of transient loads and speeds, is considered to represent in-mine performance.

To develop a system which will effectively detect and extinguish fires in underground fueling areas while also providing a warning for nearby miners. Approach A system involving optical fire sensors. automatically-released dry chemical and aqueous film-forming fluid (AFFF) fire suppressants, and automatic alarms was designed from off-the-shelf, state-of-the-art components, and was in-mine tested at two mines in the two typical underground fueling area situations: fuel transfer areas and fuel storage areas. How It Works As mines become more mechanized, the number of fire hazards increases since fueling areas are more abundant. Fire hazards are especially serious in deep mines, since escape time is longer. To help solve this growing problem, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), has developed and in-mine tested a cost-effective fueling area fire protection system. The system was designed to be rugged enough for reliable, long-term use, yet to utilize state-of-the-art, off-the-shelf components to maintain cost-effectiveness. The system consists of cross-zoned, ultraviolet flame sensors used for quick response to fire, and a dual-agent fire suppression subsystem. A dry chemical is used for fast fire -knockdown," and AFFF (or "light water") is used for long-term, fire-securing capability. The basic components of the system are shown in the schematic illustration.

Improving the air quality in metal/nonmetal mines is important in protecting the health of miners. Air quality can be improved in metal/nonmetal mines by developing proper ventilation techniques. Mine ventilation systems require stoppings to direct the airflow and establish pressure differentials throughout the mine. Due to their large size, stoppings in large-opening mines are cumbersome and costly to construct and maintain. As part of its mining health and safety program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested two novel stoppings (Super Stopping and the EZ-Up Curtain Stopping) at its Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). The Super Stopping is designed as a long-term permanent stopping for use in the main entries of the mine, while the EZ-Up Curtain Stopping, although very durable, is designed more for portability and ease of installation. This paper describes the design, materials, and construction methods used for these stoppings as well as their performance and durability when subjected to tests simulating actual production face blast pressures.

Develop a user-friendly computer program that permits those interested in mine health and safety to access and analyze on a personal computer (PC) employment, production, and accident data for U.S. coal and metal-nonmetal mines. This software is being designed with a major focus on flexibility and case of use. The Mine Accident Decision Support System (MADSS) will be available for distribution in mid-1994. Currently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is seeking volunteers willing to pilot test a preliminary version of the software and to provide suggestions for its improvement. Background Since 1975, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has compiled large data bases of information about U.S. mines and the reportable accidents, injuries, and illnesses that have occurred in those mines. Employment and production data arc collected on a quarterly basis from each mine and accident information is collected on an incident -by-incident basis. The USBM has compiled estimated costs for each of these accidents using computer models. All of this information is potentially useful to mine health and safety researchers. However, it has been underutilized because it is stored in large mainframe data bases that arc inaccessible to many users and/or are cumbersome and difficult to use.

Eliminate the need for roof bolter operators and their helpers to work under unsupported roof while setting or removing temporary supports before or during the roof bolting cycle-a task that annually accounts for approximately 20 percent of all roof fall fatalities. Approach The Bureau of Mines designed, built, and field tested an auto-mated temporary roof support (ATRS) that can be carried from place to place on the drill head of a single, fixed-head roof bolting machine (squirmer) used in low coal seams (less than 42 inches thick). How It Works The ATRS is designed for installation on any streamlined squirmer. It consists of a ten? foot-long, steel, wide-flange beam supported by two double-acting, telescoping hydraulic cylinders. The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume-percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the early detection of insulation failure in squirrel cage induction motors for the past 4 years. Research was done using a sophisticated empirical data-modeling technique based on values calculated from a motor&apos;s voltage and current phasors. This technique produces two polynomial equations that calculate the insulation leakage current and power. These models were implemented in a prototype system that monitors six motors on a continuous miner for insulation leakage. These insulation leakage values are used to anticipate insulation failure. The system consists of a motor-data-system for each motor on the machine and a control computer located away from the miner. Each motor-data-system consists of an analog interface to the motor&apos;s voltages and currents, a single-board computer that reads digitized data and calculates voltage and current phasors, and a bus node that interfaces the single-board computer with the rest of the system by way of a serial bus system. Using this bus system, the control computer requests and receives phasor data from the motor-data-systems. From these data the control computer calculates and displays two deterioration values for each motor, for leakage current and power, using Bureau-developed models. These values are stored in a data base from which the user can display graphs of each motor&apos;s deterioration values over time.

This Bureau of Mines report presents an iterative approximation method for microseismic source location that was developed to adapt microseismic techniques for rock structure analysis to investigations of surface problems, such as slope failure in an open pit mine. The source location method and two derivative location algorithms are described in detail, and the speed and accuracy of the two algorithms are compared.

To improve efficiency in producing clarified water from mineral and metallurgical processing streams containing suspended particles. Approach Particles suspended in mineral and metallurgical processing streams are filtered out by granular magnesium oxide (MgO) used as the medium in deep bed filters. How It Works MgO is substituted for the silica sand or garnet sand currently used in conventional deep bed filters. These filters presently consist of a 24- to-48-inch-deep layer of either silica sand or mixed media, consisting of a stratified combination of anthracite coal, silica sand, and garnet sand. As waste water containing fine solids is percolated through the granular bed, the suspended particles become attached to the filter grains. When MgO replaces sand as a filter medium, the overall filter capacity is generally increased 50 to 80 percent, and no equipment modifications are necessary for filter operation. MgO is unique because it has a positive surface charge in water while most suspended materials are negative. The attraction of these negatively charged suspended particles to MgO enhances filtering performance. As is necessary for all good media, MgO is insoluble and nontoxic.

The work discussed in this report was done by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for determining trace amounts of fluorine in coal. Samples of coal mixed with calcium oxide as a fixative agent for fluorine were ashed at 600° C and the residue was fused with sodium carbonate. The melt was dissolved in phosphoric and sulfuric acids and distilled to separate the fluorine) which was determined in the distillate by a SPADNS-zirconium spectrophotometric method. Fluorine determinations of 83 commercial coals ranged from 0,001 to 0.019 percent.

"The petroleum division of the Bureau of Mines in its laboratory investigations, has had occasions to develop a number of types of electrical heating equipment. It was found that electric heaters could be used to particular advantage in the standard distillation test for gasoline. (Dean, E.W., Motor Gasoline, Properties, Laboratory Methods of Testing and Practical Specifications, Bureau of Mines Technical raper 214, 1919, 33 pages.) In order to assist in rendering this type of heater available for general use, a description of the apparatus developed by the Bureau was published. (Dean, E.W., A convenient electric heater for use in the analytical distillation of gasoline,. Jour. Ind, and Eng. Chem., Vol.10, 1918, page 823.) Shortly after the article was printed a chemical supply house undertook the manufacture of an electric heater suitable for gasoline distillation. A preliminary model was examined and tested by the Bureau and modifications were suggested that were incorporated in the type of heater that was finally marketed.Description of the Bureau of Mines-heater: The electric heater developed by the Bureau has an inverted conical resistance Plament surrounded by a layer of heat-insulating material and mounted in a metal case having a top of hard asbestos (Transite) board. The resistance element is a helix of nickel-chromium alloy wire held by a molded core of alundum. The Bureau heaters are generally of about 330 watts capacity and are used with stock types of regulating rheostats capable of reducing the effective wattage to about 43 the full-load maximum."
