Many gold-bearing ores throughout the Western United States contain small quantities of mercury. The presence of mercury not only decreases the gold-loading capacity of the activated carbon, but complicates the fire refining of cathodes and creates a potential health hazard. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods to limit mercury extraction during gold ore leaching and to remove mercury from cyanide leach solu-tions. Mercury dissolution was reduced from 40 to 10 pct by decreasing NaCN concentration from 20 lb to 0.34 lb per ton of solution at a pH of <11. When 0.1 lb CaS per ton of ore was added to a leach slurry, mer-cury extraction was reduced from 27 to 0.4 pct. Less than 0.5 pct of the mercury was solubilized when <0.1 lb CaS per ton of are, along with lime and NaCN, was added to a simulated grinding circuit.

Researchers associated with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), are investigating injuries (fatal and nonfatal) attributed to water well drillers during well drilling activities. Injury data, obtained from various sources, suggest that many water well drillers are experiencing unnecessarily high insurance premiums and very avoidable citations or violations from the direct result of accidents, injuries, and fatalities occurring throughout the water well drilling industry. Expensive insurance premiums and unnecessary citations are the direct result of poor health and safety practices. Visits to numerous water well drilling sites were conducted by NIOSH personnel to characterize and identify the injury data collected and to provide inexpensive strategies to prevent, minimize, and eliminate safety and health issues associated with water well drilling activities.

The Rickard mine in York County, S. C., named for the original owner, Alexander Rickard, was operated about 50 years as. No records are available of the quantity of corundum shipped. Pratt states, "Many tons were picked up from the surface and shipped." The mine was visited on August 6, 1943, by the author, accompanied by Gilbert W. Withers of Atlanta, Ga. Investigation of the property was begun by the Bureau of Mines after some initial work by the Mi-Cor Corp., a company organized by Gilbert P. Withers of Atlanta to explore the property. In conducting the Bureau program, 754 linear feet of trenches were dug, 110 feet of old drifts cleaned out and examined, and 38 feet of shaft retimbered.

Soapstone is the term applied to an impure, massive, soft rock with a greasy feel. It is of variable composition, consisting chiefly, however, of talc, tremolite, and chlorite. Although limited quantities of soapstone are used as building material, in fireplaces, and in the manufacture of laundry tubs, sinks, laboratory-table tops, and-oven and furnace blocks, the principal part of the production is ground for use in roofing paper, insecticides, and as a filler in asphaltic paints.

The Calico silver-barite deposits near Barstow, Calif., are a potentially important resource. Exploration performed by two major mining companies out-lined large tonnages of ore that assayed at 2 to 3 ounces of silver per ton and 7 to 15 percent barite. Laboratory beneficiation work was done by the Bureau of Mines on four samples to develop methods for recovering the silver and/or barite. Cyanidation recovered from 47 to 60 percent of the silver from ore ground to approximately 100 percent minus 325 mesh. Salt roasting minus 10-mesh material, followed by regrinding and cyanidation, recovered 75 to 85 percent of the silver. From 75 to 90 percent of the barite was recovered in a plus 92-percent barite product from either the natural ore or from cyanidation residues. Salt roasting before cyanidation precluded recovery of the high-grade barite concentrate from the leach tails.

"The copper industry has had a long and interesting history associated with leaching, involving vat, dump, heap, and in situ methods. The Bureau of Mines has also had an interest in copper leaching and has researched the techniques of solution recovery, particularly concentrating on in situ methods. In situ mining is a relatively low cost method and has been proven commercially successful by nine operations. It has been most commonly used for final recovery in old workings at the conclusion of conventional mining operations.This report brings together information about 10 commercial in situ operations as well as 14 experimental projects. These 24 sites comprise most of the in situ copper mining activities that have taken place in the United States. Background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, and recovery and processing are provided for each operation. Production data and tables summarizing the engineering statistics for each operation and an extensive in situ mining bibliography are included. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this Bureau of Mines report is to summarize the documented in situ copper leach mining activities that have taken place in the United States. It was prepared to provide a source of engineering and operating data upon which future in situ copper mining activities can be based. Twenty-four different sites are discussed. These are all of the sites that are known to the authors from the extensive in situ copper leach mining bibliography developed at the Bureau's Twin Cities (MN) Research Center (Appendix B).In situ copper leach mining activities fall into the following categories:1. Commercial operations with ore body preparation.2. Commercial operations in old mine workings.3. Experimental programs.Ore body preparation includes such activities as blasting, block caving, and hydraulic fracturing (hydrofracing) specifically to fragment the ore body. Operations in old mine workings include those done in open pits, worked out block caved areas, and backfilled stopes where leaching is done as an afterthought to conventional mining. Experimental programs are small-scale tests of the feasibility of a commercial operation. Some of these programs did not progress to the point where leach solutions were applied to the ore.Each operation (locations shown in figure 1) will be discussed in terms of background information, geology, ore preparation, solution application, recovery and processing, and engineering and production data. Information was collected from published reports, communications with company personnel, and site visits."

"INTRODUCTION The operation of internal-combustion engines at high altitudes and the general aspects of combustion processes in rarefied atmospheres have created considerable interest in the problem of ignition and flame propagation at low pressures. Nuckolls, Matson, and Dufour 4/ have published results on the effect of low pressures on the propagation of flame in gasoline vapor-air mixtures in vessels of large capacity. The volumes of their test equipment varied in capacity from 0.425 to 125 cubic feet. Various sources of ignition were employed. These authors found that the explosive range of gasoline vapor in air decreases with decreasing pressure at pressures considerably below atmospheric, until a limiting absolute pressure of about 33 mm. mercury at ordinary temperature is reached, at which point no appreciable flame is propagated.Experiments carried out at the Bureau with natural gas-air mixtures at reduced pressures have shown 5/ that the limits of inflammability are but little affected at reduced pressures down to 175 mm. mercury. As the pressures of natural gas-air mixtures are reduced below atmospheric, the mixtures become more difficult to ignite; however, if a suitable source of ignition is employed, the limits of inflammability are as wide at 175 mm. mercury absolute pressure as they are at atmospheric pressure. In view of these observations with natural gas-air mixtures, it appears important to investigate gasoline vapor-air mixtures for possible similar behavior. For this reason the tests herein described were carried-out."

The Bureau of Mines investigated electrowinning and tapping lanthanum metal from lanthanum oxide in a fluoride bath. The electrolyte was composed of LaF3, BaF2, and LiF. Metal containing 0.2 percent impurities was produced at a rate of over 2 pounds per hour. Principal impurities were carbon, aluminum, and silicon. Low-carbon metal was produced by continually discharging the carbon oxide gases and maintaining 0.1-atmosphere pressure. Anode reactions and cell design were found to be important factors in cell operation. Both frozen electrolyte skulls and tungsten metal crucibles proved satisfactory for collecting the metal and did not react with the molten lanthanum.

The Ore Knob mine, in Ashe County, N.C., was one of the largest producers of copper in the eastern states during the 1870&apos;s. The ore occurs in a fissure vein, which strikes N. 64° E. and dips nearly vertical. The country rock is granite gneiss. Drilling indicated that the vein structure is approximately 200 feet wide and 1,500 feet long. The vein material shows evidence of replacement of the original gneiss by sulfides. Solution cavities in the vein were noted in some places. The ore minerals and pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor quantities of sphalerite. The gangue contains biotite, magnetite, albite, calcite, and many silicate minerals.

This report describes a monitoring system applied by the Bureau of Mines to provide rapid, continuous determination of the main constituents of exhaust gas during the Bureau&apos;s approval schedule testing of diesel engines for under-ground use. Commercially available continuous analyzers with strip chart readout are employed for nitric oxide (mass spectrometric), carbon dioxide (nondispersive infrared), methane (NDIR), carbon monoxide (NDIR), and oxygen (polarographic). Good correlation is obtained between the continuous instrumental results and those obtained by batch chemical and gas chromatographic methods.

The value of careful fractionation in the manufacture of petroleum products is recognized more and more by petroleum refiners. Recent studies have shown that the quality of the products depends largely on the type of fractionating equipment and on the care used in operating the equipment. For example Rue3 has shown that careful fractionation of pressure distillate will greatly reduce the amount of chemical treatment necessary to produce finished gasoline. The advantages of the combination of pipe still and bubble tower in obtaining good fractionation are well recognized in the petroleum industry. However, the equipment designed in the past has in general been much too large for convenient laboratory use. The present paper describes a continuous-distillation apparatus for the laboratory study of fractionation. This apparatus has given very satisfactory results in the study of different crude oils and petroleum products. A discussion of the theory and action of bubble towers has not been given, as this subject has been discussed previously by Cooke and Rue4. It is believed that the distillation curves of the products obtained from this apparatus show clearly its capabilities.

"An electro-optical method was used to quantify superoxide (SO) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) exposed in vitro to respirable quartz and kaolin dusts and in vivo to quartz. Release was determined by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tdrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from video-recorded images of individual cells. In vitro exposure to 0.025 or 0.05 mg/ml kaolin for 40 minutes resulted in no significant differences in either the total diformazan produced (max) or the maximum rate of diformazan production (R)./n vitro exposure to 0.025 mg/ml c1uartz decreased max 38 percent while no significant change was found using 0.05 mg/ml. However, R was decreased 31 percent and 24 percent for the low and high dose, respectively. In contrast, PAM obtained from animals exposed in vivo to quartz dust for two or four weeks in inhalation chambers exhibited increased production of diformazan. However, only PAM analyzed three days post-exposure showed significant increases, while PAM from animals sacrificed ten or 31 days post-exposure were not significantly different from control. The combined in vitro and in vivo quartz results might suggest that there is an initital acute response to exposure that decreases the ability of PAM to produce SO, followed by recruitment of production of PAM with increased SO producing capability. It appears that removal of animals from the source of exposure permits PAM to return to control levels of SO production by31 days. Whether this would be true for chronic exposure remains to be elucidated.IntroductionPulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria.(1) This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis usually is accompanied by a respiratory burst which increases cellular oxygen consumption leading to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites.(2) These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes, but they have also been shown to be toxic and,have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases.(3) Toxic effects may be a result of 1) an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by the respired bacteria and/or dusts; or 2) an abnormally high production resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

The Bureau of Mines examined the effects of high humidity and water droplets on the GCA Corp. real-time aerosol monitor (RAM--l). which uses a lO4mm cyclone preseparator. Tests were conducted both in a laboratory and in a full-scale model mine entry. The laboratory tests were conducted in a test chamber saturated with moisture and water droplets. Under these extreme conditions. the RAM-I responded by indicating dust concentrations of 1-1/2 to 2 mg/m3? although the air was dust free. Within the first 2 h of each test. water accumulated in the cyclone and affected the cyclone particle separation characteristics. resulting in readings of 3 to 4 mg/m3. In addition. condensation formed inside the RAM-I case and affected the liquid crystal display (LCD). However. the full-scale mine entry tests revealed that the RAM-I can function ac-ceptably in an atmosphere of water vapor and water droplets similar to the most severe conditions found in an underground mine.

Model testing is a two part operation; first, to assure the valid¬ity of the mathematical statements and second, to evaluate the accuracy of the computer model for predictive purposes. Verification of both the conceptual and computational aspects can be achieved through the use of input data for which output results are available for comparison. In this dissertation, two test problems were selected for model testing from the Economic Evaluation Reports of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Process Evaluation Group. Verification Data Set I Input data for this test was selected from an economic analysis of a hypothetical 1,056,000-ton-per-year mine in a 48-inch bituminous coal seam (Process Evaluation Group-Report No. 72-27, 1972). The mine was scheduled to operate five days per week, three shifts per day, 220 days per year with an estimated life of 20 years. Coal reserves covered an area of 6.4 square miles with an expected recovery rate of 70%. Production was achieved through 4 continuous miner sections with an average production rate of 400 tons per shift. The cost summary in the report included a breakdown of equipment and labor requirements. A depreciation schedule listed the expected capital expense per year of operation, assuming capital replacement with identical units and no change in the unit cost. Supply and oper¬ating costs were listed in both gross annual figures and cost per ton of production. Several laboratory flotation tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a sample of unweathered diorite from the B. F. Camden property, Amherst County, Va. Results showed that an ilmenite concentrate analyzing 45.5 percent Ti02 (titania), 0.07 percent P205 (phosphorus pentoxide), and 2.21 percent Si02 (silicon dioxide) could be produced from a feed containing 7.72 percent Ti02 and 3.94 percent P205. Ti02 recovery in the concentrate was 47.6 percent in a batch test. The weathered saprolite material overlying the diorite required scrubbing and desliming to remove argillaceous material and preliminary flotation of apatite followed by flotation of ilmenite. The resulting concentrate analyzed 47.3 percent Ti02, 0.19 percent P205, and 0.99 percent Si02 from a starting feed of 8.99 percent Ti02 and 3.37 percent P205; TiO2 recovery was 54.5 percent.

During 1925, at Holt, Ala., the United States Bureau of Mines made a study of the composition of the gases at four elevations in the shaft of a furnace producing foundry iron. A report3 of the work was published in 1927. Some of the results of this investigation are shown in Figure 1. As indicated, the gas at the center of the shaft is low in CO2 content, while the gas in the vicinity of the wall is higher in CO2. The composition of the gases at the top and at the center of the stock column was not far different from the composition of the gas at the top of the bosh. The investigation indicated clearly that lean gas was channeling through the center of the column. More recently the study was enlarged in scope to include investigation of a furnace operating on Lake Superior ores in the Chicago district. A series of planes between the stock line and tuyères was surveyed. Means and apparatus were developed for obtaining, between the inwall and the center of the furnace, the gas composition, gas velocity, and temperature on each plane. A complete report4 of the investigation has recently been published.

The Skene mine, in the Elizabeth District, Illinois, produced lead are from 1901 to 1907. Three exploratory holes drilled just north of the mine were said to have penetrated 40 feet of good zinc are. During the summer of 1944, the Bureau of Mines drilled check holes close to what appeared to be two of the three old holes. They also drilled two holes to the south of the mine and one into the core of the deposit. Results of the investigation are given in this report.

"Introduction.Sixty years ago, M. Berthelot found that ethylene could be selectively absorbed from gaseous mixtures by concentrated sulphuric acid, and that the compound formed by the chemical union of the gas and acid was readily decomposed by heating with water, yielding ethyl alcohol. Only within the last few years has there been any attempt to make use of this discovery technically.Bury*, working in England at the Skinningrove Iron Works and on a commercial scale, developed a technical method for converting, the ethylene of coke-oven as into alcohol. With a gas containing less than 3 per cent of ethylene, he obtained a yield of 1.6 gallons of alcohol per ton of coal carbonized.De Loisy** perfected a technical method for treatment of coke-oven as for alcohol. Evidently this work was carried out on a semi-commercial scale. His method is based on the use of catalytic agents for hastening the absorption of ethylene by sulphuric acid. He uses part of the spent acid for drying the gases and pact for the manufacture of ammonium sulphate. Excess acid is reconcentrated by waste heat. Others have worked on the problem, but so far there has been no large recovery of ethylene from coke-oven gases. The chief difficulty seems to lie in the low efficiency (about 50% of methods and tae relatively low concentrations of ethylene in the gases treated. Develop a safe, nonpolluting power source for underground mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines and EIM-CO Mining Machinery International entered into a cost-shared project to develop and demonstrate a novel power source for mining. An underground mining utility truck was equipped with an ultra-low-emission hydrogen-fueled engine and a safe, metal hydride fuel storage system. How It Works The nonpolluting hydrogen engine and a "solid-state" (metal hyride) hydrogen fuel storage system were combined to power a utility mining vehicle. An 85 horsepower diesel engine was convened to burn hydrogen. The engine was converted by equipping it with a spark ignition, lowering the compression ratio, turbocharging, and adding an ahercooler and a parallel fuel induction system. Parallel induction provides two intake paths, one for hydrogen and one for air. It avoids intake-manifold backfiring by keeping the hydrogen and air separate until they enter the cylinder.

Oil shale has been defined as, "a compact, laminated rock of sedimentary origin yielding over 35 percent of ash and containing organic matter that yields oil when distilled but not appreciably when extracted with the ordinary solvents for petroleum." The oil-yielding organic matter in oil shale, commonly called kerogen, decomposes upon application of heat to form bituminous materials that are soluble in organic solvents and may be extracted from the inorganic residue. However, separation usually is accomplished by continuing the heating and thereby cracking the primary bitumens to gas and oil, which distill, leaving a carbonaceous material on the mineral residue. It has been suggested that this conversion takes place only at relatively high temperatures - 750°F or higher. On the other hand, other workers have found that transformation may take place to some extent at temperatures as low as 400°F. In either a solvent extraction or a destructive distillation process for separating organic material from the inorganic portion of oil shale, the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of the oil shale sufficiently to induce a satisfactory rate of conversion of kerogen to oil is important in determining the design of an economical process. Likewise, the quantity of heat recoverable from a spent shale is important in determining the overall heat balance of the process. Published data on the specific heat of American oil shales are meager. Gavin and Sharp present data for two samples of Colorado oil shale, one from near DeBeque and one from Parachute Creek, and for a sample of spent shale over a temperature range of 68°F to 1940°F. McKee and Lydor present data on the specific heat of two samples of oil shale from near DeBeque, Colorado. Additional thermal data on various grades of oil shale over a wider range of temperature are needed in order to apply sound engineering practices to the design of equipment for processing oil shale.
