The fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, although one of acute financial de ression was, nevertheless, one of distinct encouragement to those who have long struggled against the much too prevalent occurrence of accidents in coal mines, especially of coal mine fire and explosion dis- asters, both of which are now known to be readily preventable. Table 1 summarizes some important information about explosions in the United States coalies for the fiscal year which ended June 30, 1932, insofar as such information is available to the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines, the personnel of which are under instruction to get in touch with and report on all mine explosions in their respective districts, including not only those occurrences with loss of life but also those in which for- tunately no lives, are affected. Table 1 gives data on 33 ignitions in 10 States with a total of 87 deaths for the year; the number of ignitions (33) is considerably groater than the number (26) for the previous fiscal year, and is exactly the aver- age number for the past four fiscal years; the mumber killed in the 33 ignitions (57) is materially lower than that (217) for the preceding fiscal year or the average (150) for the past four fiscal years. The States with the greatest number of deaths from explosions in the fiscal year ending June 30, 1932, were Virginia; 54; West Virginia, 11; Pennsylvania, 7 (6 being in anthracite mines); Alabama and Colorado, 4 each; Illinois and Kentucky, 3 each; and Maryland, 1. The greatest number of ignitions listod wes that for West Virginia, 7; then came Pennsylvania with 6 (2 being in anthracite mines); Alabama with 5; Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee and Virginia, 3 each; and California, Kentucky, and Maryland, 1 each. In 2005, a total of 2,063 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Coal mines comprised 14.1% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.6% (n=1,911) and anthracite mines 7.4% (n=152) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 70% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.0%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.6%).

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the thirteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The description of the deposits developed is followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

The domestic mining industry gained more strength in 1988 as the healthy comeback that became evident in 1987 continued and grew for many commodities. The increasing and more stable commodity prices, still predominantly in the metals sector, reinforced both the new ways of conducting business and the use of technological advancements in successfully lowering operating costs during the last 4 to 6 years. Some commodities and companies still struggled to survive, but increases in productivity and profits were becoming more common.

Five conclusions that emerged from ADL's Contractor Noise Measurements Assessment done for the Bureau of Mines and the 7 December 1971 Bureau of Mines Contractors' Round Table Meeting in Boulder, Colorado were: ? a limited amount of good data has been obtained for characterizing the noise environment for electromagnetic (EM) coal mine operational/emergency communications systems; ? significant noise date gaps still exist; ? suitable instrumentation and data analysis methods are available for filling these data gaps; ? the immediate and most important data gaps should be filled by means of a timely field measurement effort that is purposely limited in scope and duration; ? this field measurement effort should preferably be carried out by a team knowledgeable and experienced in coal mine EM noise measurements.

Assure fail-safe stopping of a mining vehicle immediately following a loss of electric power. Approach A separate emergency brake system which actuates when electrical power is interrupted, was installed on several mining vehicles and tested in a long-term underground mining demonstration. How It Works Separate, spring-actuated brakes, which press against brake discs, are used to stop the vehicle following power failure. To allow norm al movement of the vehicle, hydraulic oil under pres? sure from the vehicle's hydraulic system is directed to a spring? loaded piston in each emergency brake housing. That pressure causes the piston to compress the spring and relieves the spring pressure against the puck, thereby allowing the brake disc to turn freely. See Figure 1 A. If the electrical power fails or if the machine is turned off, a valve in the hydraulic line to the emergency brakes opens. That valve, shown as ?Solenoid Valve (automatic)" in Figure 1, which is normally held closed by its electrical solenoid while the vehicle is electrically powered, is opened by the spring in the valve assembly. This report is the 18th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

To increase safety and productivity in mining , the potential uses and hazards of rigid foam were investigated by the Bureau of Mines Experimental Coal Mine . This research resulted in the development of chemical formulations , spraying equipment , and application procedures that permit safe and effective use of urethane foams for improving mine ventilation , for reducing weathering of mine rock and steel , for constructing seals in fire areas , and for thermal insulation .

The Bureau of Mines is using model ducts lined with coal to study the nature of coal mine fires, their rate of propagation, their influence on ventilation airflows, and their response to sealing and other fire suppression measures. For scale-modeling purposes these studies are being carried out in various size ducts; eventually they will include a full-size mine entry in the Bruceton multiple-entry Experimental Mine. To date, work has been carried out in an insulated 9.l-m-long duct with a 5-cm thickness of coal leaving a 23-by 23-cm square opening for air ventilation. Fire propagation processes in this duct were mainly transient in nature owing to the relatively small length-to-diameter ratio. This report describes the experimental equipment employed and the results obtained to date.

Nineteen eighty-seven was a year of significant change in the Bureau of Mines-change to help it better adapt and respond to the wide range of new challenges facing the U.S. mineral industry. The Bureau has been regarded as the world's premier mineral information and research agency. Its authoritative, comprehensive data and its pioneering research have contributed significantly to the minerals position of the United States. Yet no organization in today's complex, dynamic world, with its rapidly advancing technologies, can afford to rest on its laurels. Mission and program must be constantly fresh and relevant to the day's issues and problems. Moreover, rather than reacting to events, the organization must strive to anticipate and prepare for them. It must have a sense-a vision, if you will-for the future.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 15,174-acre Sleeping Giant study area, including the 6,112-acre Wilderness Study Area (MT-075-111), in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lewis and Clark County, MT, about 30 miles north of Helena. Sleeping Giant Mountain trends west-northwest from the Missouri to the eastern crest of Little Prickly Pear Canyon (the route of Interstate 15), and has several summits over 6,000 ft. Geologically, the area is in the Disturbed Belt, and a large block of Middle Precambrian metasedimentary siltstone and underlying shale has been thrust northeast over younger, sedimentdry volcanic and intrusive rocks.

In January 1948 , the Secretary of the Interior directed that a study be made of energy resources and requirements that would provide a basis for continuing appraisal of the adequacy of the Department's programs in the energy field . That this instruction was timely has been demonstrated by the increasing interest being evidenced by Congress , industry , labor , and the public in the future of the energy segment of our national economy . Several studies of individual energy sectors have appeared . Various legislative proposals have been made in Congress for obtaining more information on this subject . Substantial interest in energy projections is not , of course , a recent innovation . Energy availability and consumption are strategic factors in peacetime prosperity and growth and in our national defense as well . The past generation's literature of earnest public discussion and of legislative consideration of matters involving energy projections is very extensive . This is an exploratory study produced in the Program Staff of the Office of the Secretary of the Interior in the first half of 1949 and revised recently to take account of certain of the preliminary energy data from the 1947 Census of Manufactures and critical comments . It is offered at this time solely as a technical contribution in economic research technique . As the Bureau of Mines has recently undertaken to revise this preliminary study , critical and other comments are invited .

The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

The data in this circular were taken from publications of the United States Bureau of Mines and published annual reports of the Wyoming State Inspector of Coal Mines. The tables included are complete only' with regard to major disasters; the Bureau of Mines considers a major disaster one in which 5 or more men are killed. However, minor disasters and gas ignitions recorded in these publications are included. It is known that a number of gas ignitions have occurred of which no record is available. This is one of a series of papers by the Bureau of Mines giving by States available data regarding coal-mine explosions. This information is published in condensed form in the belief that it may be of vale to mine operators in preventing future coal-mine explosions.

A power supply to operate fluorescent or mercury vapor lamps from 300 volt dc coal mine trolley wires has been developed for the Bureau of Mines. A high frequency regulated inverter unit incorporates ballasts for a mix of lamp loads up to 650 watts. For 600 volt trolley systems an additional power converter unit was developed to step down the dc voltage to 300 volts for the inverter unit. Both units have operated in a working coal mine for over 12 months without need for servicing. The lamp load in these tests included two 100 watt mercury vapor head lamps and six 75 watt fluorescent lamps.

For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to determine the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage . Associated with these tests , occasional records were made of the characteristics of. the air blast or concussion from the explosions . Although the importance of the air - blast problem was recognized , the equipment was not designed for air -blast measurements , nor was the early research program concerned with the problem . After the ground - vibration tests had been completed , attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect . The air - blast problem in reference to quarry and mine blasting may be divided conveniently into three phases : (1 ) Determination of the fundamental characteristics of the air blast , such as the pressure - time relationship , speed of propagation, attenuation , and the like ; ( 2) effect of blasting conditions on these air -blast characteristics ; and ( 3) determination of the conditions necessary for damage to structures . The initial step was the development of microphones suitable for recording the anticipated blast pressures. Such microphones were designed and built during 1940 , and described in technical detail for publication ( 2)3/. Briefly, the microphone adopted was a small, plate - diaphragm condenser type . The recording was through special transducer amplifiers with low -frequency response to zero cycles per second and a Duddell - type oscillograph of special design .

The Zebulon manganese deposit has been known for a number of years. It is situated about 3 miles east of Zebulon, Wake County, N. C., on the Avon, Privett property (fig. 1). The deposit outcrops as a vein, or dike averaging-16 to 20 feet in width. Drilling by the Bureau of Mines has shown that this outcrop results from consolidation of a number of small stringers near the surface. The surface width and the Percentage of manganese oxides (resulting from. weathering) diminish with depth. Below 50 to 80 feet, the vein material is mainly quartz and spessartite garnet. The deposit was first examined by W. T. Benson, a Bureau of Mines engineer, in 1941. The Bureau conducted a diamond-drilling exploratory program an the property from November 7, 1944, to January 25, 1945. A. total of 2,508.5 feet was drilled in 14 holes along the strike of the deposit.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines study on the hazards of large-scale conveyor belt fires in underground coal mines, as a function of both air velocity and distance from belt surface to gallery roof. The fire hazards considered were smoke obscuration, toxic effects of carbon monoxide (CO), and elevated air temperatures downstream of the fire. All of these hazards scale with the ratio of fire intensity to ventilation airflow. These hazards were all found to be greater at the lower belt-to-roof distance, owing to the greater fire intensities that resulted. The hazards of smoke obscuration and elevated CO levels were greater at lower air velocities. Smoke obscuration was found to be the earliest hazard, reaching critical levels before the stage of belt flame spread. Critical levels of CO and downstream air temperatures were not reached until the later stages of flame spread. Fire growth rates during rapid flame spread were much greater than rates measured during the early stages of belt burning. Data were analyzed to determine the early-warning capability of fire sensors. Smoke sensors provided the earliest warning, followed closely by CO sensors. Thermal sensors did not exhibit any early warning capability.

The policy of buying crude oil on a gravity basis , recently instituted by the major crude oil purchasing agencies in the Mid- Continent field , has caused a new and vital interest to be taken in the work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines for preventing evaporation of crude . From the early years of the industry oil men have recognized that the gravity of crude oil is usually an index of the gasoline content , but it has not been so generally known that the gravity of the crude oil decreases if evaporation is permitted . In 1919 the Bureau of Mines began a survey to determine the evaporation losses of crude petroleum in its various stages of handling from the well to the refinery , The results of this study are presented in Bulletin 200 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Evaporation losses of petroleum in the Mid- Continent Field , Bulletin 200 , U. s . Bureau of Mines , 1922. ) and Bulletin 225 ( Wiggins , J.H. , Methods of decreasing evaporation losses of petroleum , Bulletin 225 , U. S. Bureau of Mines , ( In press ) The findings of this survey were so startling that soon after the preliminary report had been published , several tank companies began manufacturing vapor- tight tanks for the purpose of reducing these important losses . Since that time the development of this type of apparatus has been so rapid that today , every oil trade journal carries numerous advertisements of vapor- tight tanks and equipment as well as technical articles dealing with various problems in connection with the elimination of evaporation losses , whereas three or four years ago the subject was scarcely even thought of. The present report has been prepared in response to numerous requests for information on the apparatus actually being used to prevent evaporation losses . At this time oil operators are also extremely interested in holding the lighter fractions in the crude oil in order to prevent a lowering in gravity . The practice of removing the vapors from crude- oil tanks by means of a slight vacuum and extracting the gasoline from them is not discussed here .

Iceland spar is a variety of calcite ( calcium carbonate ) characterized by its purity , transparency , and perfection of crystalline structure . It takes its name from the country in which it was discovered . The actual demand for it is small , but the supplies of high - grade optical spar are so meager that the search for it has become international in its scope . Iceland spar is a scientific necessity , for without it research precision and technology would be hampered considerably . The earliest students of mineralogy were familiar with calcite , but the transparent variety was not discovered until early in the seventeenth century , when crystals of it were found in the bed of a stream in Iceland . It received little attention until 1669 , when Erasmus Bartholinus first recognized its powers of double refraction . The results of his investigation were published in a book , " Experimenta Crystalli Islandici , " which appeared in 1670. The law governing the action of the rerracted rays was discovered by Christian Huygens eight years later . The polarization of light rays in passing through Iceland spar was discovered in 1809 by Etienne Louis Malus , a French physicist , who published a paper describing the phenomenon . His work was closely followed by that of William Nicol , who in 1828 designed the Nicol prism which is still used as the source of polarized light in most optical instruments .
