Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Footnote references serve to guide the reader to more detailed information.

"INTRODUCTION Electrolytic manganese is produced by electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell, metallic manganoese being deposited on the cathodes and sulfuric acid produced at the anodes. The spent electrolyte is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been subjected to a reducing roast; the resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.The leach liquor produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant 3/ at Boulder City, Nev., contains 135 to 140 grams of ammonium sulfate and 32 to 36 grams of manganese (as sulfate) per liter, and has a pH of about 2.5. After neutralization to a pH of 6.4 to 6.6 with ammonia and thickening, 0.10 to 0.15 gram of hydrogen sulfide per liter is added to the liquor to precipitate the heavy metals, and after 15 to 30 minutes the precipitate is filtered off. Residual sulfides and colloidal material are removed by ferric hydroxide formed by adding a small amount of ferrous sulfate to the solution at a pH of 6.5 to 7.0 and passing air through it. The solution is then filtered and clarified as a precoat filter. Finally, 0.1 gram of sulfur dioxide per liter is added, and the solution is electrolyzed in an anode-in-diaphragm cell. The spent electrolyte coming from the cell contains approximately 10 grams manganese, 135 grams ammonium sulfate, and 45 grams sulfuric acid per liter."

During the 7-1/2 years (January 1945-June 1952), immediately preceding enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, 26 major disasters3/ in the coal mines of the United States caused the deaths of 491 persons. In the next 7-1/2 years under the act (July 1952-December 1959), only 12 major disasters occurred. The total killed was 148. This improvement is commendable. However, the continuing frequency of minor fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in the Nation's coal mines, many of which could have been of major consequence, are cause for serious concern to the coal-mining industry and those affiliated agencies engaged in promoting safety in the industry. The data presented in this report have been prepared to make available to the coal-mining industry and related groups an overall perspective of the disaster potential from mine fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in coal mines after 7-1/2 years under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. This act, effective July 16, 1952, which amended the original Federal coal-mine investigative act of May 1941, provides under Title II certain enforcible mine-safety provisions designed to prevent major disasters caused by explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip and man-hoist accidents in coal mines that employ 15 or more individuals underground.

"INTRODUCTION Bauxite, in Appalachian Alabama, occurs in the Rock Run and Goshen Valley districts in Cherokee County; in Nences Creek Valley near Jacksonville; near Anniston in Calhoun County; north of Fort Payne in DeKalb County; near Ashville in St. Clair County; and near Talladega in Talladega County.In February 1942, Preston E. Cloud, Jr., assistant geologist, Federal Geological Survey, began a study of these bauxite deposits and the geology relating thereto.The Bureau of Mines established field headquarters at Piedmont, Calhoun County, in July 1942. Mineral agreements covering a total of 11,097 acres were executed with 15 landowners in the Rock Run district; 38 in the Goshen Valley district, covering 7,575.5 acres; and 3 in the Nances Creek Valley district, covering 988.5 acres. Drilling was done on.the properties of 9 land¬owners in the Rock Run district, and on the property of 1 landowner each in the Goshen Valley and the Nances Creek districts. Drilling began October 26, 1942, and ceased on May 17, 1943.Power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes in shallow deposits and sampled .old shafts, mines, and mine dumps.In all, 222 holes for a total of 13,250 feet were drilled. Of these toles, 88 penetrated bauxite but too low in grade to constitute ore."

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.

Operating mine haulage trucks near the crest of stockpiles and waste dumps is a potentially hazardous practice often resulting in a localized slope failure and a dump point accident. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a computer code (INSLOPE3) based on the kinematic method of limit analysis which determines an admissible truck weight (upper bound value) for varying distances from the slope edge. The program considers the material strength parameters, slope geometry, and inertial forces induced by vehicle braking. The program can be utilized to assist in the determination of safe operating distances for a haulage truck from a slope edge, the development of safe vehicle operating procedures, and the admissible weight for a static concentrated loading near the crest of an otherwise stable slope. This report provides information on the use of INSLOPE3, interpretation of the results for mining applications, and instructions for acquiring a copy of the software.

During the current business depression the Bureau of Mines has received many inquiries concerning placer mining, the prospects for men of small means to make wages by small-scale placer operations, the locations of placer deposits in the United States, methods of working placers on a small scale, and allied subjects. It has therefore seemed desirable to prepare a circular covering, in nontechnical language, the principal questions which have boon referred to the Bureau of Mines for answer. There are a number of bureau publications dealing with placer mining, most of which are now out of print, but which may be consulted in the larger libraries. Other articles on placer mining nave appeared from time to time in the technical press and several good textbooks have been written on the subject. A partial bibliography of this literature appears at the end of this paper. A recent pamphlet published by the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology to assist the prospector and inexperienced small operator has received wide and favorable attention and is recommended as a useful reference. In the present paper no attempt will be made to cover the subject of placer mining in a comprehensive manner, but discussion will be confined to elementary questions of particular interest to persons of limited experience.

"INTRODUCTION Toxic gases in the products from the detonation of explosives are one of the hazards in blasting underground. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines 4/5/ have shown that the oxygen balance of the explosive is an important factor in the control of toxic gases. This balance is considered in determining the composition of modern metal-mining explosives for blasting underground, and application of the concept has reduced the volume of toxic gases generated.The chemical nature of the material being blasted also influences the composition of the toxic gases produced. Under some conditions of blasting in massive pryrite, unsafe concentrations of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide have been found.Experiments with the O-J apparatus 8/ have shown that there is an increase in the volume of carbon monoxide in the gaseous products when permissible explosives are detonated in contact with coal dust. Thus, reactive materials of a reducing nature adjacent to explosives loaded in drill holes may decrease the effective oxygen balance of the explosive and cause the volume of toxic gases to increase.Several blasting accessories of reducing nature have been introduced recently for use in coal or metal mines or tunnels. In practice these are loaded adjacent to the explosive where conditions favor reaction with the products of detonation. The effects of this loading on the gaseous products obtained from the shot are indicated in this report. Broad consideration was not given the efficiency, usefulness, or over-all safety of these devices, but the practical significance of the hazard resulting from increased volume of carbon monoxide is discussed."

HIGH ACTIVITY, continuing the substantial recovery from the slump of 1954, characterized the domestic nonfuels-mining industries during 1956 Income generated in producing nonfuel minerals and mineral products3 increased 9 percent over 1955 as compared with a 6-percent increase for all industries. Thus, the 1956 performance of the mineral industries, while not as dramatic as the 27-percent increase obtained in 1955, continued to exceed the gains of the total economy. Other measures of mineral activity strengthen this conclusion. The index of physical volume of mineral production, presented for the first time as an integral part of this review, reflects significant gains in all major sectors during 1956; and, although the overall increase was diminished somewhat by the steel and iron-ore strike in July 1956, the all-mineral index (including fuels) reached a new high.

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau of Mines to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. "This paper results from the research at The Pennsylvania State University into establishment of standard procedures for characterization of respirable coal dust performed by the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust and supported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute at The Pennsylvania State University. The research performed within this particular project is oriented primarily toward standard methods of sampling and characterizing respirable coal mine dust underground so that the chemical, physical, and morphological characteristics are known and can be related to the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Pennsylvania.The research was initiated by con¬ducting a search of the literature to determine what coal and geologic variables may be related to CWP. The effects of coal rank, free silica content, the mass of respirable dust, and the level of trace elements were the major variables studied. It seems to be evident that the free silica content, the rank of coal, and the mass of respirable dust are the major concerns in defining the causes of CWP. However, based on the literature survey, the authors have concluded that verification of the causes of CWP is a multivariate problem and must be analyzed in an appropriate statistical manner.The results of a multivariate analysis of ten trace elements recorded on Pennsylvania coals are presented. Five of these trace elements were found to be of use in differentiating one coalfield from the others. Of these five elements, chromium and zirconium showed a strong positive correlation with the rank of coal while strontium showed a negative correlation.The design of the field sampling work and its application in future research is the final topic discussed. The sampling plan is oriented toward continuous miner sections with eight-stage impactors as the collection equipment. All of the field work will be conducted in the coal measures of the Allegheny Formation and above with both dust and channel samples being collected in the same mines.Coal workers' pneumoconiosis has been an important topic of concern to miners, mining engineers, and epidemiologists for decades. The general cause of the dis¬ease, the inhalation of coal mine dust, is well known, but the specific coal and geologic variables that affect the incidence and severity of the disease are still subject to debate and study. The primary objective of this study is to identify those variables of Pennsylvania coals that contribute to the CWP problem. To accomplish this task, a field sampling program is to be conducted to relate the characteristics of the coal dust, the coal seam properties, and the geologic variables to the occurrence of CWP.The first year of this study has been involved with both a literature review and experimental work oriented toward identification of causal variables related to CWP. The results of this work are presented here along with plans for implementation of the findings in future research.The previous studies of CWP causal variables have been conducted by scientists, engineers, and medical personnel. Many different types of studies have been performed with emphasis on interpreting the effects of dust mass concentration, mineralogy of the coal, the rank of the coal, and trace element concentrations upon the incidence of CWP in various coalfields. Most of the research has been conducted during the last two decades, with the British Isles, West Germany, and the United States being the primary countries involved.The review of the literature was conducted to determine which variables are likely to warrant further study in Pennsylvania. Previous research studies have related CWP to free silica and other mineral content, the rank of coal, the mass of dust in the working place, and the trace elements in the coal and lung dust. In the following sections, each of these topics will be discussed and analyzed."

The production and processing of crude petroleum and natural gas are the dominant economic sectors of the Middle East. Downstream processing of these mineral fuels to petrochemicals and fertilizers is a major investment opportunity. In 1991, the 15 countries that constituted the region accounted for 26 % of world crude petroleum output, 15.3 % of world natural gas plant liquid production, and 4.5 % of world dry natural gas production. Only Cyprus and Lebanon were not crude petroleum producers. Production of these mineral fuels all declined from that of 1990 owing to the Persian Gulf War, during which output from Kuwait and Iraq either ceased owing to war damage, or was embargoed. Prior to the war, Iraq and Kuwait were the fourth and fifth largest world producers of crude petroleum, respectively. In the war, virtually all of Kuwait's production and transport facilities were destroyed or damaged. Iraq's output was embargoed from export, with only domestic sales taking place. The embargo also affected Jordan, both in terms of transshipment of materials through it to Iraq and in exports of phosphate and potash. Shipments of crude petroleum by pipeline from Iraq through Saudi Arabia and Turkey and by vessel through the Persian Gulf were terminated. However, the loss in production from Iraq and Kuwait was made up by accelerated output from other Middle East and world producers. Saudi Arabia, in particular, with its excess production capacity, accounted for the largest portion, increasing crude petroleum output by 27 % to almost 3 billion barrels.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourteenth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned & name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled except the deep holes drilled to test geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in noncoal mines. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and listed in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it as permissible for safe use in mines.

"FOREWORDAmong many problems created by World War II, the question of supplies and distribution of raw materials is of outstanding importance. One of the most critical of these raw materials is fuel, and of the fuels coal is of primary importance. The normal consumption of coal has increased greatly owing to the increased tempo of industry in general. It has been necessary to divert much of the fuel oil, gasoline, etc., ordinarily used for industrial and domestic purposes, to supply the enormous demands of mechanized warfare. Coal must be provided to replace this fuel. Furthermore, the enormous increase in the production of steel has increased the demand for coking coals to a critical point.The Solid Fuels Administration for War is encouraging the use of anthracite fines in the production of byproduct coke for blast furnaces for three reasons. First, the production of anthracite for domestic use; is hampered by the inability to find a market for the fines incidental to the production of domestic sizes. Second, the shortage of low-volatile coking coal is acute, and any action that will decrease the quantity of low-volatile coal required will relieve the situation. As will be seen in this report, there is some promise that use of anthracite fines in coke-oven mixes will lower the amounts of low-volatile coal required. Third, utilization of those anthracite fines will tend also to alleviate the general fuel shortage. It has been the privilege of the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the Solid Fuels Administration in the technical problems involved."

The Bureau of Mines experimentally burned Pittsburgh Seam coal and other combustible materials found in mines in order to obtain a better knowledge of their emission products. These experiments were conducted in the Bureau's intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which simulates environ-mental conditions in underground mines. Smoke characteristics, gas concentrations, mass loss, and ventilation were measured. From these values, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. This information was sought as part of a comprehensive study of combustible materials that will ultimately advance the design of more efficient fire detection and suppression systems. The coal combustion measurements presented in this report, together with previous analyses of wood and transformer fluid fires form a data base by which future studies of other mine combustibles can be compared.

The objectives of the coal-research activities of the Bureau of Mines are very well expressed in the organic act of Congress establishing the Bureau. [This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]
