An investigation was conducted to develop columbium alloys with e1evated-temperature strengths higher than those exhibited by more common commercial columbium alloys, and attention was given to improving the oxidation resistance and ease of fabrication. Additions of carbon, aluminum, and chromium were made to some columbium-base alloys, and their effects on workability, recrystallization, oxidation resistance, and mechanical properties at elevated temperatures were explored. The additions were made to take advantage of (1) solid solution strengthening, and (2) precipitation hardening. Three alloys displayed good high-temperature properties with relatively good oxidation resistance at 1,000° C, and tensile strengths from 26,000 to 32,200 psi at 1,400° C. When the properties of these alloys were compared with those of commercial alloys, B-66 and FS-85 (1),4 the outcome was favor-able for the alloys studied in this investigation.

Differences in the reducibility of iron oxide materials have been recognized for a long time. Limonites are deoxidized more readily than hematites, and unaltered magnetites are the most difficult to deoxidize. Sinters are found between hematites and magnetites and vary considerably in reducibility, depending on the sintering practice followed and on the degree of fusion of the product. The increased activity in the beneficiation of taconite recently has made available a new blast-furnace raw material, namely, iron oxide pellets made from magnetic taconite concentrate. Many of the data in this paper apply to these pellets, or glomerules, as they were called when this method of agglomerating iron ores was first considered. To clarify the terms applied to iron oxide materials in this paper, the following definitions are given. Agglomeration is the general term applied to all methods of compacting or consolidating fine iron oxide materials. Sinter is the product from a Dwight-Lloyd or Greenawalt sintering machine. Pellets are formed by balling fine, moist oxide in a rotating drum at room temperature, followed by heating in a shaft furnace to a temperature below that of incipient fusion to develop a permanent bond. Nodules are formed by heating the iron oxide material to incipient fusion in a rotary kiln. Briquets are formed in a mold under pressure, with or without the addition of a binder, and burned to develop a permanent bond.

The papers contained herein summarize results of various recent Bureau of Mines investigations in the area of mine power distribution systems. They are based on information from Bureau personnel, contractors and grantees, and Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration. Conclusions drawn from a series of parameter measurements on mine power systems, taken over a 3-year span, are presented. Personnel and equipment hazards due to faults on isolated, solidly grounded, and resistance grounded three-phase systems are discussed. Two papers cover dc applications of circuit breakers, including a novel protection scheme for trolley lines. The methods of suppressing induced arcing currents and voltages in a-c machines are evaluated. An evaluation program for ground monitors is described. Acceptance test procedures and the importance of various paparameters for trailing cable splice are covered. A number of techniques for locating faults in trailing cables are described.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a study of mine fires in the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania to determine the most effective approaches to fire control in this area. The problems involved in controlling an anthracite fire include the geological and mining conditions in this area, the propagation characteristics of anthracite, the fire control methods available, the hazards associated with these fires, and the mar-ginal effectiveness of past fire control projects. From this genecal background, fire control options were discussed as they apply in ISBO to the Centralia mine fire. Probable effectiveness, feasibility, and costs were assessedv The options evaluated include four excavation plans, flooding, hydraulic flushing, water curtain isolation, mining to construct an underground carrier, burnout control, and relocation of the community. The most advantageous from a technical viewpoint is an excavation method combining complete excavation of the fire zone within the borough with trenching to confine the remaining fire. It appears that for many anthracite fires, as for the Centralia mine fire, there are no available control measures that have a moderate cost, are proven effective, and produce minimal disruption on the surface.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between, the Coordinating Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (C.R.C.) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.-4/ Further reports have been issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to the summer of 1941 and during the winter of 1942-43 and the summer of 1943 5/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1,) 41-42 and during the summer of 1942. The present report presents analytical data for 1,356 samples, representing the products of approximately 103 companies. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines - and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 770 samples, 286 items, and 94 brands; premium-price, 537 samples, 236 items, and 72 brands; third-grade, 49 samples, 31 items, and 18 brands. For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying the properties of crude petroleums produced in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. A number of reports have been published giving the analyses of crudes from the different field and regions as made by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis.4/ Several of these reports include analyses off crude oils from the Rocky Mountain region.5/ The search for new fields and new producing horizons in old fields in the Rocky Mountain region has been quite intensive during the last few years, and a number of discoveries have been made.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. A 2-in-diameter 6x25 fiber core rope was degraded on a bending fatigue machine. This was the first in a series of tests on rope of this construction and size. Baseline testing at the laboratory was reported in an earlier publication. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that as a wire rope nears the end of its useful life, deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength increase at an accelerated rate.

An earlier Bureau of Mines report4/ reviewed and summarized all reports of investigations dealing with the coarse grained pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota to dune 1951. It was proposed, and the hope was expressed in this report, that future progress in the development of the technology of the mining and beneficiation of the pegmatite deposits would be rapid enough to make it possible to issue annual progress reports. Although notable progress has been made in the treatment of pegmatite material, it has not been rapid enough to justify annual reports

The objectives of this research were: 1. to determine the stability relationships of coal mine roof rocks which are cut by fractures or intersecting joints with and without roof bolts, under various sets of conditions including horizontal formation pressures, inclination and coefficient of friction of joints, bolt loads, roof spans and rock properties; and 2. to develop criteria for the design of roof bolt sys terns for such roofs. The problem was studied by mathematical finite element models and by laboratory models. From the results of the mathematical and laboratory models, equations were derived to express the relationships listed above for cracked, single-layered roof beams and design tables for such beams are included. The analysis was then extended to include multi-layered cracked beams reinforced by roof bolts and a method for analyzing and designing bolting patterns for such roof rocks is presented.

The results of tests on oxidized lead ores from two properties are reported in this paper. The investigation was on a small laboratory scale only; no pilot-plant tests were made. One sample, from the Magajupa Mining Co., near Duenweg, No., contained coarsely crystalline and disseminated galena and cerussite, so both tabling and flotation were considered in the beneficiation. By this treatment of an ore containing 11.5 percent lead, a recovery of 79.5 percent of the lead was made in a concentrate containing 73.3 percent lead.

"INTRODUCTION The Margerum bauxite district, in Colbert County, Ala. was investigated in December 1940 and in February 1943 by R. W. Smith of the Bureau of Mines .3/ A geologist of the Federal Geological Survey investigated and mapped the district in the fall of 1942.These preliminary investigations indicated bauxite showings over an area about a mile long by 2,000 feet wide. It was felt that the chances were good for finding one or more large deposits of low- to medium-grade bauxite. The location - within 35 miles of the alumina plant of the Reynolds Metals Co. atLister Hill, Ala. – made it especially attractive. A field office was established in Iuka, Miss., on May 19, 190,, and mineral agreements were executed with four landowners covering 1,146.6 cores.The drilling on the project was done under contract. The power drilling was supplemented by a labor crew that drilled hand-auger holes, where there was little or no gravel overburden, and sampled the old test pits.The Federal Geological Survey, after thorough study of the district, recommended 54 drill holes 4/ to delimit the known deposits and to search for possible extensions. After the drilling started, many of these locations eliminated, and others were changed upon the basis of information gathered from the holes as they were drilled."

INTRODUCTION The mining law governing all mineral substances other than oil is ordinance No. 7 of 1927 (Minerals Ordinance, 1927), passed by the Legislative Council on March 25, 1927. The accompanying regulations, No. 3 of 1932 (General Minerals Regulations, 1932), made under the authority of section 66 of the minerals ordinance, were made by the Governor in Council on December 23, 1931.

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. This Information Circular brings together for consideration recommendations from U.S. Bureau of Mines research in the area of surface mine mobile equipment maintenance for the period 1982 through 1991. It updates the 1982 contract report by Baker and Alves that formed the basis for much of the work described in the present report. Recommendations for hazard abatement during work on mobile one equipment are presented and stem from the results and recommendations of the research in two areas: (1) equipment and workplace hazard reduction, and (2) management of maintenance information. Recommendations included in this report apply to both the operators and maintainers of mobile mining equipment as well as to the manufacturers of that equipment.

A survey of electromagnetic noise reports was performed and a summary of the results are given. Industrial concerns were surveyed for techniques to minimize the effects of electromagnetic noise and are presented. The common types of communication links used in mines today are presented. A mathematical development was presented which determines the probability of bit errors versus distance for various types of communication links designed for in mine use. The probability of undetected errors for the protocols of the communication links is given together with burst error detection.

"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Studies of gas-oil ratios in many fields have shown that much gas has been wasted, insofar as its effectiveness in oil production is concerned. Swigart and Bopp carried."

Cooperation between the United States Bureau of Mines and the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain, continuous since 1924, has made possible this and other papers on safety subjects. Grateful acknowledgment is made to representatives of the Safety in Mines Research Board of the Mines Department for their assistance in arranging visits to several mine-safety stations, and to F. H. Wynne, Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Great Britain, for arranging visits to mines in Great Britain, Belgium, France, and Germany. During the summer of 1927 the writer had the privilege of visiting the mine-safety testing stations in Great Britain, Belgium, Germany, and France, in the order named. All of these countries have large coal mines, many of which are rated as gassy. Therefore, when the installation of electrical equipment is contemplated, each of these countries is confronted with the same safety problem as in the United States - the development of electrical equipment that will not ignite gassy mine atmospheres, should such atmospheres through neglect or accident surround the equipment. The means used by those countries in safeguarding gassy mines should therefore be of general interest to safety engineers in American coal mines, and it is proposed to give a brief survey for each of the four countries mentioned. The first of these surveys will cover conditions in Great Britain.

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title II, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.
