Forage plots were established on agricultural lands contaminated by acid mining waste. The acid produced through oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides caused elevated solubility and plant availability of copper, zinc, and arsenic which killed vegetation and polluted surface and groundwater. Soil amendments including agricultural lime (CaCO3), hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), phosphorus, and organic matter were used to reduce the toxicity of metals. Several acid-tolerant grasses were used to vegetate the amended soils. Various soil extraction techniques were used to see which best correlated with vegetation performance. The extractions corresponded to three "forms" of metals in soil including soluble (water-saturation extract); plant-available/weakly adsorbed (DTPA extract); and total (HNO3/H202 extract). Of the extractants tested the DTPA levels appeared to correlate best with metal levels in plant tissue. The DTPA soil extractant serves as a useful tool in predicting potential phytotoxicity of mine waste materials.

"Ilmenite is the most important titanium-bearing constituent of titaniferous iron ores. Such ores, of which the United States has abundant reserves, are of interest because they constitute an important potential source of both iron and titanium that may be tapped in times of stress, and which eventually may be utilized in the normal course of events.As the iron and titanium constituents of titaniferous iron ores are not completely separable from each other by ore-dressing methods, any process for metal recovery will, of necessity, involve reduction of the iron in ilmenite. Consequently, knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite should supplement information already available concerning those ores. With this in view, the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines undertook to evaluate thermodynamic properties; the data obtained are the subject of this report.Three types of experimental work were involved. First, low-temperature specific heats of ilmenite were measured in the temperature range 500 to 29S° K. These data serve to evaluate the entropy, a quantity necessary for a reliable evaluation and correlation of other thermodynamic properties. Second, high-temperature heat-content measurements were made in the temperature range 298° to 1,743° K. The data serve to bridge the gap between room temperature and elevated reduction-process temperatures. Finally, hydrogen-reduction equilibria were measured in the temperature range 1,220° to1,375° K. These data-give a direct measure of the free energy of reduction of ilmonite at these temperatures and, in conjunction with results of the other two types of measurements, serve to obtain the heat of formation of ilmenite, a quantity not readily determinable by direct calorimetric means.The data are correlated to form a composite, self-consistent portrayal of the thermodynamic properties of ilmenite, which may be used in evaluating the efficacy of any reducing agent of known thermodynamic properties. The electrochemistry of carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was investigated at a variety of electrode materials in different supporting electrolytes. A portable detector for carbon monoxide was developed using a porous gold anode in perchloric acid supporting electrolyte. This detector has two full scale ranges, 0-100 ppm and 0-500 ppm. A portable detector for mixtures of nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide was developed using a porous silver cathode in sulfuric acid supporting electrolyte. Nitrogen dioxide was determined in the gas stream by electroreduction. The nitric oxide in the gas stream was oxidized to nitrogen dioxide by passing it over Cr(VI) on firebrick. Electroreduction gave the sum of NO + N02. Analog circuitry was used to display the amounts of NO and N02 separately. Two ranges were available for each gas. They were 0-10 and 0-50 ppm for NO and 0-2 and 0-10 ppm for N02.

In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. This report presents prediction equations for 12 variables that are indicative of metallurgical coal quality. The variables include six for coke strength and six for carbonization product yields. All variables were predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents from 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction equations, developed by mathematical-statistical techniques, were based on information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of bituminous coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. The equations were evaluated for validity with independent data derived from the 900° C carbonization of 33 binary blends of various coals and 22 binary blends of Pocahontas No. 3 low-volatile bituminous coal with 11 high-volatile bituminous coals. Results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining because data used to derive the prediction equations can be obtained at the time of exploration. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques and thus lead to the production of uniform coke.

Coal mine roof shales fracture preferentially at slickensided surfaces because of weak or nonexistent adhesion between two slickensided rock surfaces. The purpose of this Bureau of Mines research was to characterize chemically the thin film of smooth, glossy material that makes up the slickenside. This material was analyzed by electron spectroscopy and ion scattering spectrometry while in place on the rock surface and by standard methods of quantitative chemical analysis on concentrate removed from the rock. These analyses showed that the chemistry and mineralogy of the slickensides are similar to that of the adjacent shale.

This work, conducted under Bureau of Mines contract, deals with the development of a computer graphics software package that will: 1. display mine ventilation schematics and other representative Illustrations for a real-time data acquisition system under development by the Bureau, and, 2. utilize the Bureau-owned Minefire and Ventilation Code for display of ventilation on and contamination predictions. The software package has been written try operate on a 64K, Z-80 based microprocessor-computer. The project has been divided into two phases. The first phase dealt with the development of the graphics software The sec rind phase dealt with the retrofit of the Minefire and Ventilation Code to the Z-80 microprocessor-computer.

The report covers tests and criteria for the establishment of safe grounding systems for coal mines. The work deals primarily with under-ground coal mines, but much is applicable to surface mines as well. Included is an extensive guide to grounding and bonding procedures for mine surface substations. Xit-Rods are evaluated and shown to deviate from manufacturer's claims. An analysis shows that very long cables are difficult to monitor using audio frequency ground-check techniques. A method is developed to detect failing cable splices without removing the cable from service. Simulation and measurement are compared for a technique to detect bad rail bonds, and an assessment is made of grounding techniques for dc face equipment.

"Trolley lines used in connection with electric haulage in mines are a source of danger and many lives have been lost by men accidentally coming in contact with the wires. Usually the wires in metal mines are sufficiently guarded to prevent men from touching them with their person or by pieces of steel which they may be carrying or their shoulders, while walking along the level. However, it is difficult to guard effectively the wires at loading chutes along the haulage ways and in spite of safe guards, chute tappers have been electrocuted through loading bars accidentally touching the trolley line.To overcome this danger the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., at Lowell, Arizona formely used a hinged V-shaped trough made of 1-inch by 6-inch lumber, that was dropped over the wire in front of the chute, when the cars were being loaded. This arrangement interfered with the easy operation of the chute, and a cut-out device for the trolley line was devised by W. R. Gibson, chief electrician for the company. This cut-out is efficient easily constructed and roes not interfere with the operations at the chutes or with the motors operating on the same level.When the cut-out is open the electric current is carried past the gap by an insulated wire on the opposite side of the drift. A hinged board drops down over the ends of the trolley guard when the slide is open and Prevents anything touching the live wires. About ninety of these cut-outs are now in use in the mine,The levels under the scopes are timbered with drift sets placed 5 feet apart, and the loading chutes take up the space between two sets. All trolley wires in. the company's mines are carried 6 feet above the rails and guarded by two 1/2 by 6-inch boards placed on either side of the wire."

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have demonstrated that mine-wide ventilation in large-opening stone mines can be improved by using low-pressure, high-volume propeller fans and constructing stoppings in key locations to direct and control airflow. In light of these findings, a comparative study was conducted to determine if a portable diesel-powered propeller fan could per-form more efficiently for dust dilution and transport than an axial vane fan for localized ventilation. The objective of this study is to evaluate both fan types for ventilation efficiency at an underground dump/crusher facility in a limestone mine. Results showed an improvement with the propeller fan to dilute both the respirable dust and the respirable silica dust around the dump/crusher facility. Overall, an average reduction of 20% in respirable dust and silica was observed at the dump/crusher location with the propeller fan.

THE WILLISTON basin is the largest known sedimentary basin on the North. American continent. Two-thirds of this large basin lies within the United States in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Less than 10 years after the first commercial oil discovery in North Dakota in 1951, the petroleum became one of the largest industries in the three-state area. Crude petroleum is now the most valuable mineral resource in the area. In 1960, the basin produced 39 million barrels of worth $100 million at the wellhead. Most of the 137 oil pools covered to date are in Paleozoic carbonates at depths ranging from 3,000 to 13,000 feet. The major producing fields, centered on the Cedar Creek anticline in Montana and the Nesson anticline in North Dakota, produce from depths below 6,000 feet. This report presents descriptions of all phases of the Williston basin petroleum industry, including leasing, exploration, geology, drilling, production, transportation, and refining. Engineering, physical, and production data, maps, and crude petroleum analyses for 137 separate oil pools are included.

A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

"The use of trailing cables on cutting machines, loading machines, and similar electrically operated apparatus is recognized as a necessary adjunct to the economical operation of such units. On the other hand, such cables because of their liability to failure from being run over by cars, locomotives, and other track-operated equipment offer one of the greatest hazards - indeed, probably the worst hazard - met with in the operation and maintenance of permissible equipment. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines is seeking ways of making the use of trailing cables less hazardous.Recently the bureau conducted an extensive investigation of both concentric and duplex rubber-sheathed trailing cables at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station. The results of this investigation were published in two reports.3 4In a larger part of portable motor operations in mines a double-conductor cable can be used. The investigation already mentioned indicated that it is feasible to construct a 2-conductor cable that will stand considerable abuse, such as being run over by loaded cars or light-weight locomotives without producing dangerous arcing in the cable either from grounds or short circuits. There are conditions where more than two conductors are necessary, and in such instances it will probably be necessary to use a cable less resistant to this kind of abuse.Schedule 2C, covering the tests of electric motored equipment, was approved February, 1930. This schedule provides for performance tests on trailing cables as follows;Trailing Cable Performance: The following performance test, optional with the manufacturer, is established for determining the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Trailing cables that pass this test will be especially recommended for this service.The cable will be placed across the two rails of a track and a 4-wheeled 7-ton car will be run over it 50 times. The speed of the car shall be approximately 3-1/2 miles per hour and potential shall be applied to the cable during tests. The cable will be shifted in position after each passage of the car thus giving 100 places over which two wheels have passed. To warrant special recommendation of the Bureau, a cable must neither become short-circuited nor grounded either to the rails or wheels in more than 10 per cent of the 100 places.The Bureau of Mines is prepared to conduct tests as outlined in the foregoing paragraphs to determine the suitability of trailing cables for use on permissible equipment. Application for such tests should be made to the Director, Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C. Each application should be accompanied by a check for $25.00, made payable to the Treasurer of the United States, to cover the expense of conducting the test on a given size and make of cable."

This manual provides instructions for installling, operating, and maintaining protective canopies on the Joy Mfg. Co. cutter. These instructions are based upon two actual installations: one made in a mine and one in the factory. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopies are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other cutters with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other cutters and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

This report describes methods of reclaiming abandoned or inactive tailings ponds and dams. The investigated sites were selected tailings deposits adjacent to metal mines in the southwestern United States and the Pacific Northwest. The basic data developed for each site consisted of the following: a review of existing literature; a site visit that included sampling of the tailings and surrounding materials; laboratory and engineering studies; and development of reclamation plans. Laboratory tests determined the gold and silver content of each tailings deposit and the chemistry of the tailings and surrounding materials. Reclamation plans that include approximate costs were developed for five tailings deposit sites. These ranged in size from 52,000 to 103,000,000 tons. Our conclusions on the remining potential of each site are based on the tailings assay and other technical data. This study concludes that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible at certain sites. Included in this report is a remining program as part of the overall reclamation plan for two sites. Our preliminary results indicate that remining as a reclamation tool is feasible for only one of them.

A bench-scale evaluation of coal and coal waste materials as aggregate materials for use in longwall mine supports was undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines Health and Safety program on ground control. Performance data were obtained on portland cement concretes (PCC) prepared with coal and coal wastes as aggregate materials. The effects of high-early-strength accelerators on strength and creep and of superplasticizers on strength properties of PCC formulated with coal and coal waste were investigated. Concrete formulated with a high-early-strength accelerator and coal and coal waste has 20 and 40 pet greater compressive strength, respectively, than the control samples without admixture. A concrete formulated with coal waste and the high-early-strength accelerator, using four bags of cement per cubic yard and a water-cement ratio of 1.0, had the lowest creep value of all the coal- and coal-waste-formulated PCC's tested.

Several deposits in the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (WSA) have small identified or potential for undiscovered gold and silver resources. One prospect area is a potential target for molybdenum. Most base and precious metals and one uranium deposit in the study area are of the fissure-filling, contact metamorphic type associated with late stage fluids of the Cretaceous Cadiz Valley batholith. Some evidence suggests limited Tertiary and Quaternary mineralization. Mineral deposits are controlled by faults, shear zones, and joints which strike northwest and dip northeast or southwest. Although undefined, calcium, sodium, lithium, and strontium brines are inferred within the study area. Some potential for oil and gas and geothermal resources is indicated by the interest private industry has shown in the eastern part of the study area. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of lines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral survey of the Sheep Hole/Cadiz Wilderness Study Area (p1. 1) which encompasses approximately 205,000 acres (83,000 ha) in south-central San Bernardino County, California. The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the mineral resources of mines, prospects and mineralized areas; geological, geochemical, and geophysical investigations were conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Tri-State, or Joplin, zinc and lead mining district in south- western Missouri and adjoining, parts of Kansas and Oklahoma is one of the great mining districts of the world. It is in flat-lying or gently rolling agricultural country near industrial centers and coal, oil, and gas fields. The nearly horizontally, lying bedded rocks in which the ore bodies are found were originally limestone but are now largely chert containing minor percent- ages of dolomite and other minerals. The ore occurs in nearly vertical fis- sure zones, large and small, and in blanket (sheet-ground) deposits. The mining depth ranges from surface diggings to $50 feet. The average tenor of the ore mined, in recent years is much lower than that of ore produced in other large zinc and lead districts of the United States. Mining and mill- ing costs are low because of the shallowness of mining, amenability of ores to concentration, efficiency resulting from long experience of management and labor, and other factors. The operators comprise many small and medium-size producing companies and partnerships, as well as individuals and a few larger producers. About 7,000 men are employed in the mines and mills during normal industrial activity. The concentrates produced are sold f.o.b. the mill bins to local representatives of smelting companies at prices quoted on the Joplin market. The productive life of the district began with the discovery of lead near Joplin in 1848, but output was not large until after mining for zinc began near Granby in 1871. In most of the intervening years through 1945 the district produced more zinc than any other field, and it generally ranked third or fourth in the United States in lead production. Figures compiled from sources given later in this paper show a total output for the district from the beginning through 1945 of 20,755,020 tons of zinc concentrates and 3,334,057 tons of lead concentrates valued altogether at $1,110,058,581 in the mill bins. The output, in terms of recoverable metals, was 10,609,408 tons of zinc and 2,529,121 tons of lead, valued in all, at the average yearly market prices of the metals, at $1,691,282,419. During the 39 years (1907-1945) for which complete figures are available, the annual output of the district fluctuated from 23 to 66 percent of the total United States mine output of zinc and from 5 to 18 percent of the total lead; the averages for the period were 40 percent for zinc and 11 percent for lead. peak yearly production was attained in 1926, with an output of 423,800 tons of recoverable zinc and 102;117 tons of lead. Since that yoar the production rate has trended downward, accentuated at first by the depression in the thirties and later ameliorated somewhat under the stimulus of heavy demand and higher metal prices during World War II; the output in 1945 was 139,274 tons of recovorablo zinc and 23,556 tons of load. The above figures show the groat contribution made by the Tri-State district in the past toward the country's supplies of primary zinc and lead, cspecially zinc. However, the district's production is expected to decline both in quantity and in proportion of total United States mine output unless important discoveries are made. The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.
