Taboguilla is a small island located 10 miles outside the Panama Canal Pacific Entrance. In 2002 a fuel distribution facility was installed in order to supply fuel to vessels passing thru the canal. The current capacity of the tank farm is equivalent to 1,100,000 barrels. The demand for marine diesel at this location still exceeds the current capacity, thus an expansion project is currently underway to increase the available space for diesel tanks. There is a total of 800,000 cubic meters to be excavated in order to create the new space. 400,000 cubic meters of that total is basalt rock which will need to be blasted

The current and consented quarry workings at a slate quarry in North Wales {UK} intersect old long abandoned underground slate mine workings. The old underground slate mine contains the remains of World War II buildings used to house artworks to protect them from war damage. Over the past 20 years, there have been a number of roof falls in the old underground slate mine, which have damaged the buildings and make general access unsafe. From observation of the timing of these falls, they occurred in the mid 2000’s. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the possible relationship between blast vibrations experienced on the surface and those experienced on the roof of the abandoned mine caverns. Thus preventing the need to regularly monitor in the old mine workings. In order to achieve this, a rigorous geotechnical assessment of the stability of the caverns was undertaken by a fully qualified Geotechnical Engineer. Once it had been determined that it was safe to do so, 3 “MEMs based” blasting seismographs were attached to the roof, in accordance with the instruction of the geotechnical engineer. In addition, 8 “MEMs based” blasting seismographs were deployed at various locations on the surface. The trial blast comprised of 51 blastholes, with charges varying between 46kg [101lbs] and 124kg [273lbs] of bulk emulsion explosive. The blastholes were in 4 rows of holes. The blast was connected using shock tube 25ms, 33ms and 65ms delay period relay detonators. The minimum distances from the blast to the surface and underground monitoring points were 78.1m [256 ft] and 114 m [374 ft] respectively. The results from the three underground monitoring locations in terms of resultant peak particle velocity was 4.42 mm/s [0.174in/s], 3.47 mm/s [0.137in/s], and 4.69 mm/s [0.185in/s]. In line with previous research, it was determined that the underground results [when compared on a “like for like” basis in terms of scaled distance] were lower in amplitude than the surface results. In this case by a factor between 0.47 and 0.87, averaging 0.68.

Blasting accident data over a 30-year period (1980-2010) are summarized and presented for all types of surface and underground mining operations in the USA. The historical record of injuries from blasting accidents in all types of mines continues to show a significant decline. The overall decline in mine blasting injuries in the U.S.A. has resulted from advancements in blasting technology, training and improvements in blasting products and blasting processes. Some of the technology advancements such as safer blasting agents and computerized bulk vehicle loading, electronic detonators and remote operated blasting systems, and computerized blast design have and continue to significantly contribute to improvements in the historical blasting safety record. Also, the progress of significantly improving the safety of mine blasting has resulted from the combined efforts of miners, mine companies and operators, miners, unions, explosive and blasting product manufacturers, associations such as the International Society of Explosives Engineers and the Institute of Makers of Explosives and various government agencies.

Cerro Vanguardia is a known gold and silver deposit located in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. The mine has been in operation since 1998 and is thought to be one of the most important mines in Patagonia. More than 102 epithermal quartz veins have been identified in the area, with variable lengths, thicknesses, orientations and dips that constitute what is possibly one of the most extensive outcropping vein systems on earth. Veins are vertical and have variable depth. For this reason, the deposit is currently mined with a variety of extraction methods. This operation is made up of more than 60 open pits and 20 underground access ramps to exploit the deepest high grade narrow veins. This study is focused on the combination of underground exploitation with open pit blasting. That is, those production stopes in the upper levels of underground mines and their interaction with the damage levels in the final slope of open pit mines, as well as in the study of the impact of the generation of vibrations from the blasting of open pit mines and their influence on underground mines. Considering the current stage of the mine, after 20 years of operation, Cerro Vanguardia faces the need to mine deeper deposits in the face of increasing costs and declining grades. For this reason, it is essential to study the interaction of these exploitations. From a personnel safety point of view, this interaction must be well coordinated so as not to affect people and equipment. Likewise, the generation of vibrations due to blasting must be studied, which would produce new cracks, potentially generating overbreak and dilution. The main objective of this study is to determine the possible causes and influences of the blasting interaction in open pit and underground mines, seeking an optimization of the blasting process and a safety standard for personnel and equipment. To achieve these goals, this study includes a vibration monitoring plan to analyze the charge performance and determine rock constants. With the use of specialized software, damage modelling and simulations are used to determine values of damage in order to reduce overbreak. In addition, this plan contemplates the estimation of flyrock in blasting where underground work is connected to the surface, determining safety distances when carrying out a blast.

Following the success of the West Ore Zone distress mass blast in 2001 at Brunswick Mine, a similar approach was taken to distress the North Regional Pillar (NRP) which contained over 3 million tonnes of high grade ore. The NRP is located on the 1000 m Level with very poor hanging-wall (H/W) rock mass qualities. After an extensive geotechnical review, the distress slot is located close to the foot-wall (F/W) of the NRP in order to have the competent ore as H/W. The longitudinal area to distress covers 115 m along the strike and 85 m high from 1000 1-sub to 850 Sill. Prior to the final mass blast, 3 voids were created to allow rock swelling: the North void, the South void and the trench just below the mass blast. After over one year of preparation, the mass blast of 202,000 tonnes was successfully initiated on February 7, 2003 with 1561 electronic detonators and 210,000 kg of emulsion explosives. The blast achieved its objective of distressing the NRP as indicated the mine-wide micro-seismic monitoring system. This paper describes different stages of the project from void preparation to the mass blast itself, as well as some detailed aspects such as muck-pile prediction for mucking sequence with the help of DMC_Blast simulation code and electronic detonators.

A study was conducted to investigate the damage potential to underground multi-seam openings caused due to vibration generated by open-pit coal mine blasting. The objective was to recommend optimal explosives weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit blasts to ensure the safety and stability of underground openings. Sixteen blasts with varying charge weights and initiation sequences were conducted at Samleshawari open-pit mine and eighty four blast vibration data were recorded in the Hingir Rampur underground colliery in India. Analysis of vibration data showed that roof of the underground openings vibrated with higher amplitude of vibration compared to pillars and floors. The amplifications of vibration in the roof at the junction were upto 4.3 times the pillar vibration. It was observed that coal chips detached from roof when the peak particle velocity reached 131 mm/s or high. The vibration magnitude recorded was higher in upper seams openings than in below seam openings. Rapid attenuation of vibration was recorded in below-seam openings at similar locations. Appropriate particle-charge weight-distance equations were established to calculate the safe explosive weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit mine for safety of multi-seams workings of underground mine. When we look out on our business landscape today, the words higher, faster, fdwther come to mind. Compliance issues, business integration, increasing production and profitability demands are converging in an age old industry and giving it a new twist. Not that the rock changes, rather that as the variables of our business change, the resulting “cut-off grade in business” turns ore into rock or rock into ore. The trick is to emphasize the latter. As with the miners of yore, what was recovered from the business enterprise had a lot to do with tools and skill. So it is today. When the casual observer looks at drilling and blasting operations today, many see the same basic offering in terms of equipment types and process. Looks, however, can be deceiving. As with the aviation sector, a given machine might took similar to previous generations of equipment, but in fact is radically different in terms of power, efficiency, accuracy, and range. So it is with hydraulic top-hammer drills today.

Regardless of the care exercised by a blaster, seismic and acoustic effects produced by blasting can be disruptive and alarming to many people. With the general trend toward larger blasts, increased population, and urban sprawl, as well as sensational accounts of explosives - related incidents by the news media, fear and concern often leave residents searching for damage to their property. As a result, many blasting companies today find themselves at the center of litigation at an accelerating rate. Obviously, the best strategy for handling vibration and airblast complaints is to operate in a manner that does not create grounds for them in the first place. During the bidding process, ask questions. See the actual site to perf o rm an “exposure analysis.” Collect as many facts as possible before blasting including geological issues, contractual obligations, zoning, historical use of site, disruption of daily life to local residents, demographics of the surrounding area, as well as any unfavorable public opinions or prejudices connected with local construction projects or mining operations. A consultation with local pre-blast firms may assist in tracking down previous problems in the area.

The overarching goal in modern drill and blasting operations is that of optimising mining operations to achieve higher levels of productivity, safety, profitability and sustainability. Air decking, a technique used in drill & blasting to optimise explosive product use while achieving a target rock fragmentation1, is a technique that when executed correctly is proven to achieve consistent results independent of rock strength and the position of the holes (single, multiple, vertical, slanted), as well as being proven to reduce super-fragmentation (under-size or fines) while able to achieve optimal fragmentation, especially in the stemming zone2. The ‘shock absorber effect’ if the air deck reduces ground vibration and air blast3. Additionally, the practice of loading explosive product directly in saturated ground without dewatering or lining prior is an increasing global trend.

Occidental Oil Shale, Inc. constructed two commercial-sized modified in situ (MIS) retorts, Retorts 7 and 8, at its Logan Wash Oil Shale Mine in February and April 1981, respectively. One of the primary objectives of this two-retort program was to examine large-scale blasting reproducibility for commercial-sized retorts. The blast design used 545 blastholes and 550,000 pounds of explosive in ANFO equivalent per retort. Each retort was blasted using millisecond delay blasting caps tied into a single round. The blasts resulted in rubble beds very close to one another and to predicted results obtained using newly developed limited void blasting technology. The heights of the remaining void rooms over the beds after blasting were within 0.3 feet of one another. This excellent reproducibility is brought into true perspective when compared to the scale of the rubble beds which were 230 feet high with volumes of over six million cubic feet each.

Today, as adverse market conditions continue to influence the surface coal industry, it has become necessary that all functions of the surface mining process become as efficient as possible. High production with reduced manpower is the winning combination of staying competitive in the market place. We at AMAX Coal are committed to staying in the coal business, but we have always been committed to providing a safe work environment for our people and will continue to do so in the future. Approximately two years ago, our Midwest mines installed state of the art lightning detection and warning systems at our mines. This paper will cover its application at Delta Mine; the benefits and problems encountered, and the impact this system has had on Delta Mine.

Currently a critical activity for slopes stability and safety in mining is pre-split blasting to reduce damage from trim blast. Most common explosive used are based on packaged explosives, with 1 ½ in diameter cartridges initiated by detonating cord. Traditional loading process requires a significant amount of trained personnel, which in our application context could take up to 20 blasters. When pre-split blast is scheduled, it usually reduces the availability of the blasters on the total loading services at site which are also demanded to have production blasting ready at same 12-hour shift daylight time.

The Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research & Development Program (SERDP) awarded funding for evaluation of procedures to mitigate peak pressures and energy flux density in the water column from ordnance being detonated on the ocean floor. The research purpose was to conduct scaled testing to resolve whether a theoretically-viable covering technology was operationally effective in reducing blast effects and the impacts of shrapnel. An additional objective was testing effectiveness of this method for hard-bottom units (rock or coral) and (unconsolidated) sediment substrate.

Punatsangchu Hydroelectric Project Authority is constructing 1020 MW underground hydroelectric project in Bhutan. The project envisages construction of concrete dam, Desilting Chamber, Head Race Tunnel, Power House Complex and Tail Race Tunnel. Tunneling is one of the major activity in any underground projects as they are driven for multiple activities. By and large the tunnels are a major part of connecting networks from surface to caverns/underground working sites. Many tunnels in hydropower project are part of water conducting systems and one such important tunnel is the Tail Race Tunnel in this project and had to be excavated in thinly foliated rockmass conditions by D&B method. The rockmass is traversed by three to four joint sets and few minor shear seams. Rock Class “Q” values were between III and IV. Tunnel was excavated by full face parallel hole drilling blasting method. The adopted blasting method consisted of drilling 45mm (1.77 inch) diameter holes to a depth of 2m and the drilled holes were charged with 40mm (1.57 inch) diameter cartridge explosives and charges were initiated with half second non electric initiators. The perimeter holes were drilled at closer spacing of 30cm (1 feet) and alternate holes were charged using 32mm (1.23 inch) diameter cartridges explosive. Low dipping foliation joints present in the rockmass tend to slab in crown portion and erratic occurrence of intrusive bodies lead to unpredictable behavior of rock mass posing a major challenge for the safe excavation. Stability was a major issue through controlled blasting under constant supervision too could not limit the overbreak in certain weak rockmass conditions thereby exposing cavities of about 2.5m (8.2 feet). The stabilization of these cavities and handling the overbreak due to rockmass condition was time consuming and warranted additional supports. With systematic measurements and controlled blast designs the Horse Shoe Shaped Tail Race Tunnel of 9.1 m (29.85 feet) diameter and 304m (997.37 feet) length to connect with Downstream Surge Gallery of 314m (1030 feet) length, 18m (59 feet) wide and 58.8m (193 feet) height in thinly foliated and jointed biotite gneiss rockmass was successfully excavated.

The drilling at the Taum Sauk Reservoir was a unique compilation of the latest technology and everyday common sense. This site is comprised of rhyolite, which is 30 times harder than limestone in comparison. Using some of the most state of the art drills, coupled with GPS guidance, angular drilling systems, and an ordinary piece of string, some of the most amazing drilling feats were accomplished. By constructing the new dam on top of a mountain that had been blasted once before nearly 50 years ago treacherous conditions for the drills and crew were a challenge. The drills had to be flown in by cranes to get to their locations, where they then drilled anywhere from 2.5 to 6 inch (6.4 to 15.2 cm) holes at angles up to 24.4 degrees. Custom drill bits were designed by the drilling crew to tackle feats such as drilling holes up to 120 feet (36.6 m) deep. A main challenge was the shape of the reservoir, as it is not in a straight line, but rather round, so no technological way was readily available to use to drill. Common sense came in and an ordinary piece of string was used to aide in drilling the hole. A revolutionary step was that our drill was used to core our own samples. By using our own equipment, we were able to complete this task for one-third of the cost of having a third party contractor obtain the core samples. On this unmatched jobsite, it has been established that technology has come a long way, but when all else fails, a piece of string will do just fine.

Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company (CC&V) operates the largest surface gold mine operation in Colorado and is located west of Colorado Springs in Teller County between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. Gold was first discovered in the Cripple Creek mining district in the 1890s. CC&V has been conducting gold mining and precious metal extraction operations in the Cripple Creek Mining District since 1976. Current reserves are only amiable to surface mining since previous underground mining has depleted near surface ore rich veins.

Approximately 1.5 million tonnes of ammonium nitrate are transported annually across Queensland, Australia—equivalent to nearly 100 truckloads per day. This is in the form of both AN prill and ammonium nitrate based emulsions (ANE). In a recent incident, a collision involving an ANE tanker resulted in a detonation that caused extensive blast-related damage and led to the closure of a major highway. Had this event occurred within a populated area, the consequences would have been catastrophic. For over a century, investigations into the causes of such spontaneous detonations have been inconclusive. A recently completed industry supported research project has made a pivotal discovery: a surface reaction mechanism leading to hydrogen generation has been identified as a precursor to detonation. If sufficient hydrogen accumulates and subsequently ignites, it can release enough energy to initiate the detonation of bulk ammonium nitrate and ANE. Controlled experiments conducted during the project successfully demonstrated hydrogen-driven detonation events. Previous work by Proulx and Scovira, presented at the 2000 ISEE Conference, described spontaneous detonations in hot, reactive ground and the mitigating effects of buffered emulsions and ANFO. Building upon their observations, this study reproduces similar incidents under laboratory conditions, confirming that hydrogen generation also results from reactive ground interactions. Importantly, the findings challenge traditional assumptions, demonstrating that ammonium nitrate and ANE detonation in reactive environments does not require an ignition temperature threshold, confinement, or a classical chemical decomposition pathway.
