The demolition of an old power plant boiler house in Parsons, Kansas calls for the use of some linear shaped charges. The steel is thick and the structure is heavy but gravity can be a blaster’s best friend. This entry did not win in a very competitive category. We thought it was worthy of coverage in the Journal of Explosives Engineering.

For seventeen years, I have been involved in surface coal mining in the Mldwest coal fields only to find that once again, I have experienced a problem that was not known to exist in our area. The existence of high sulfur coal seams and pyrite-bearing formations coming In contact with ANFO mixtures has presented yet another potential problem facing the blaster.

Detonating cord cutting is widespread in dimension stone extraction, especially in the case of hard, abrasive stones as granites, an important resource for Italian industry. General data on this production sector are briefly discussed and analyzed in the first part of the paper. It has been recently argued that rock strength has little effect on the final results of pre-split blasting and is of only minor importance when blasting rock in general. However, it can be shown that the maximum borehole separation for optimal perimeter blasting results with constant borehole and loading configuration is strongly dependent on the tensile strength of the rock.

A discrete element computer program named DMC_BLAST (Distinct Motion Code) has been under development since 1987 for modeling rock blasting (Preece & Taylor, 1989). This program employs explicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements that are represented as circles in two dimensions (2-D). DMC_BLAST calculations compare favorably with data from actual bench blasts (Preece et al, 1993).

Delay blasting in underground coal results in shock waves traveling through the coal that can damage delay charges remaining in the blast pattern. Undetonated explosives which are dynamically desensitized or react sympathetically from shock wave impact ruin blast results. Such malfunctions, sometimes manifest as misfires, more frequently are covert weak detonations, and result in poor coal breakage and fumes with above normal toxicity. To reduce these mining hazards and resolve charge performance problems, the Bureau of Mines has developed and tested forty prototype rugged explosives in the laboratory. Rugged explosives work properly under difficult circumstances because they not only retain their shock initiation sensitivity but also are resistant to shock damage. This research investigation resulted in one candidate emulsion explosive, formulation #37, which passed all the permissibility tests required by MSHA approval regulations. However, approval was not granted because it reached shelf-life (would not shoot properly) seven months into testing. For research purposes, the remaining tests were conducted with a second batch of formulation #37. This paper discusses the prototype rugged explosive composition and permissibility test results. Where possible, for reference purposes, comparisons are made to a commercial product that has been approved. Further research work is required to overcome the noted deficiency of short shelf-life.

In past years, the usual justification for underground mining of limestone has been the depth of the overburden, perhaps 100 feet thick or more. At our Okolona Quarry in suburban Louisville, Kentucky, the overburden is usually shallow -- it averages 8 to 10 feet in thickness. However, in July 1980, we began development of an underground limestone mine on that property which also includes surface mining operations.

The four methods of reclamation now in use are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are noted. Guidelines for selecting a particular method are offered in terms of applicability under varying geologic, economic, and technological conditions.

Duvha Opencast is a large South African dragline operation supplying coal to the Duvha Power Station which is operated by Eskom, the state power utility. For Duvha to remain competitive with other collieries, it has proved necessary to continuously examine and investigate methods of reducing costs. With explosives representing a major portion of the total working costs, blasting is an obvious area of investigation.

The Army Corps of Engineers completed the Charleroi Lock and Dam in 1932. It is located on the Monongahela river approximately 22 miles (35k) south of Pittsburgh in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. It is comprised of a 420-foot (128m) gated dam, and a 720-foot (219m) by 56-foot (17m) land side lock, which provides for a 16.6 foot (5m) vertical lift.

The use of crater studies to evaluate explosive performance is a well-established practice in the Blasting Industry. Normally, this work utilizes larger charge sizes (>75mm) in order to minimize the influence of geological factors adjacent to the borehole. This can impose unwanted restrictions in the experimental factors accessible to investigation. Thus, for example, systematic studies of non-ideal performance in a somewhat practical setting is rendered quite difficult.

The Mongol-Russian Joint Mining and Processing Cu-Mo Corporation Erdenet signed a contract with BGRIMM for building a plant to produce 10,000 t/y multitype emulsion explosives by using BGRIMM emulsion explosives manufacturing technology. In order to ensure the realization this contract, we have done a series of studies on the design of technological process and the selection, layout of the production equipment, and made a success.

Both theory and experience tell us that spatially distributed energy sources generate a more complex family of seismic waves than do point sources. The resulting effects in the near field (for close-in blasting) are significantly different than those from point sources although, at great distances from the source, the seismic waves take on many of the characteristics of point sources and can often be treated as such.

This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

This paper discusses problems encountered when blasting under rivers for pipeline crossings. Many pipelines have recently been laid under the Danube River. Great care had to be taken to determine limits of detonation impulses from blasting operations in order that no damage would occur to structures at the water's edge, boats, and swimmers. Equations were derived from the results of this study which enable prediction of impulse levels.

The Pacific Northwest has an abundance of seamy, coarse granite and basalt rock. It is used primarily for road construction. Small quarries are opened nearest the road work to cut the cost of hauling. The crushers are portable. Small diameter holes 2 1/2" to 3 1/2" are placed close together to insure proper fragmentation. It is not unusual to load and shoot 100 to 700 holes 40' deep.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Brisbane Hospital complex in Australia, a number of antiquated buildings were to be demolished and replaced by newer, modem facilities. Aside from the decommissioning of the hospital buildings, the project called for the removal of approximateIy 24,000 bank cubic metres (bcm) of varying quality rock material. Given the sensitivity of the project, in particular the close proximity of the required excavation to the existing hospital structures (-3 metres at the closest point), and the requirement that these were to remain lily operational during the construction phase, it was initially proposed to use hydraulic rock hammers as the primary means of excavation. Poor production rates and unexpected dif3icuIt rock conditions led to a revision of the excavation methods and a feasibility study on drill and blast practices was undertaken. Subsequent to an initial series of trial blasts to illustrate that vibration and flyrock could be adequately controlled, drill and blast methods were used in conjunction with mechanical methods of rock breakage. This paper reviews the drU and blast processes and the practices which were necessary to comply with the multiple constraints imposed on the project. The project has highlighted that modified drill and blast practices remain a cost-effective method of excavation, even in sensitive areas which are commonly deemed inappropriate for such methods.
