LOCATION The Goudreau gold area in Ontario extends from a point a short distance south of the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway, at Lochalsh, in a south-westerly direction to the Magpie river. It crosses the Algoma Central & Hudson's Bay railway at Goudreau station, 177 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie. The area is roughly 25 miles in length by 6 miles in width. The potential gold formation is much more extensive but little prospecting has been done outside of the limits mentioned. The actual continuous area of Keewatin formation, in which gold has been found, is one of the largest in Ontario. ACCESSIBILITY Probably no mining area in a similar stage of development has had the excellent transportation facilities which Goudreau enjoys. This field is traversed in part by the main lines of the Canadian Pacific and Algoma Central railways. The Provincial Government has constructed 22 miles of road through the heart of the camp. Sixteen miles of this road is suitable for motor car traffic and several cars and trucks are in constant service.

"Over the last few decades, the emphasis on affordability and reduced cost of ownership has necessitated the development of innovative processes to carry out repairs in aero engine components. Conventional weld and braze repairs have evolved into advanced, sophisticated processes using state of the art knowledge in lasers, robotics and materials technology. This paper illustrates past and present scenarios in an attempt to illustrate progress that has been made in this area. The problems encountered in the past have been detailed along with the solutions that have been developed and commercially implemented to address these issues. Apart from technical progress, this presentation also addresses the progress made in business approaches and in Certification/Regulatory issues surrounding aero engine repair. Progress in Technology Repair technologies have also been the embryo from which new and revolutionary manufacturing technologies have evolved as well. Electron Beam Free Forming and LENS are examples of how a completely new manufacturing concept can evolve what was originally only a process to join metals. The current and future potential of these spin offs is discussed providing examples of application. While several problems have been solved over time with the implementation of advanced repair technologies, the demands of the industry have created new challenges. The paper describes these issues, outlines potential solutions and discusses the future of repair technologies in terms of the far reaching influence it is sure to have in design, manufacturing, maintenance management and life extension. Progress in Business Trends.Business approaches to repair and maintenance have also gone through considerable change with the introduction of ""Power by the Hour"" and other similar arrangements between the companies responsible for engine overhaul and the end-users. Program Based Logistics (PBL) is yet another innovation to provide a win-win situation for the repair service provider and the end user. This paper traces the development of these business initiatives and highlights successful applications. Progress in Repair Certification, Regulatory Issues.Understanding of the issues surrounding certification of repairs has also evolved with time and regulatory issues have been clarified considerably. Procedures for analysis and testing are much clearer and ""Check Lists"" are being drafted for certifying repairs on various engine components. The PMA phenomenon has added yet another dimension to the issues regarding certification and these are discussed as well."

Old iron nails are one of the most common objects which entice the general public to ask questions about the history of metallurgy. There is a lot of history in old nails - history of the manufacturing industry, and social and economic history. Nails, therefore, are fine teaching tools; whether students have to acquire metallurgical skills or explore the structure and properties of wrought iron, whether they want to look into the history of inventions and the development of machinery, studying nails tells a story better than any teacher or any book. I have used this approach often and the following note is based on several student projects, particularly the work of Carmina Herrero and Vicky Marchant. Nails, those essential metallic fasteners, have long been with us. Their size, shape and design is basically a compromise between the makers' ability to control and manipulate material and the demands of the intended application. There were copper and bronze nails in antiquity, but in this paper I want to deal only with iron nails. In Rome, iron nails were common, and Cleere carried out the fine metallographic investigations on a large stock of nails recovered from a Roman fort site in Scotland. Those nails were hand forged; sorting them at the site on the basis of length, shape of head and shape of shank (in cross section) indicated that there seemed to have been some nail standardization. It appears that the Roman smiths used a series of heading dies starting with a 1/s-in. size. Each successive size increased by approximately 1/16-in. The metallographic inspection of the microstructures of the nails showed that the smaller nails were made in the one operation; i.e. both the tapering and the formation were accomplished on the heated rod without reheating. However, in the case of the larger nails, the nail had to be reheated for the tapering after the head had been forged. Most nails were tapered on all four sides of the shank and the shanks were square in cross section; only one group had rounded shanks. Most heads were flat disks, but in one group the heads were pyramids and another group had conic heads. Figure 1 shows the procedure used to produce the pyramidal heads. Obviously, Roman nail making was sophisticated and each nail design was meant for a particular use.

Prior to installation of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) a series of laboratory tests were carried out to determine the design parameters and also determine key performance indicators (KPIs) for the industrial unit. The design parameters derived from the lab test work were then scaled up to estimate the industrial capacity of the HPGRs to be installed. These parameters include specific power draw, specific throughput, and specific force, rolls speed, product size distribution and wear rate of the rolls. This paper compares the performance of the scale-up procedure against the installed industrial size HPGR. Overall, the specific throughput of the industrial size HPGR is higher by a minimum of 30% compared to the expected scale-up value. As a result of the high specific throughput, the specific power draw and grind sizes are below the scale-up expectations in the commercial application. The impact of these factors also contribute to a lower than expected wear rate on the industrial rolls. Installed rolls achieved a service life in excess of 18,500 hours relative to the target of 6,850 hours predicted from the laboratory testing.

An extensive Precambrian iron-formation lies about 2,000 ft. beneath post-Precambrian rocks in the Fort a Ia Corne Forest Reserve, south of Choiceland, Saskatchewan. The geology, deduced from limited drill results and from some geophysical observations, indicates that the deposit is a characteristic magnetite iron-formation, not uncommon in the exposed Precambrian of Saskatchewan, but also shows certain interesting features of faulting and pre-Paleozoic weathering which have given rise to a pre-served detrital deposit of hematite. The body is of ore grade and of sizeable proportions. T HIS paper is presented in order to set forth the interesting geological features of a Precambrian iron deposit located beneath the cover rocks of the Great Plains region and to comment upon the methods of discovery and interpretation of the nature of the body. "Bioleaching uses iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria to extract base metals from sulfide minerals. As bioleaching involves breaking the iron-sulfur bonds by ferric attack, the biologically mediated rate of iron oxidation is recognized to play a key role in influencing the overall kinetics. In this study, we investigate the catalytic ability of an indigenous AMD culture for oxidizing Fe(II) in solution. This culture was subsequently adapted on pyrrhotite tailings (0.6% Ni) by gradually increasing the solids loading. Results from this study show that such an adaptation reduces the initial lag phase in the biotic oxidation of Fe(II), thereby allowing for a higher Ni extraction when compared to experiments with an un-adapted culture at a similar solids loading. The use of adapted cultures also helps to reduce the residence time for bioleaching of Ni from pyrrhotite tailings. INTRODUCTIONAs the world demand for pure base metals grows; the mining industry is increasingly faced with the burden of processing lower grade ores and mining waste streams in order to recover the occluded metal VALUES ((Watling, 2006). The extractive metallurgy of nickel from sulfide minerals focuses on using a combination of mineral processing, pyrometallurgical (smelting) and hydrometallurgical techniques to extract Ni from its ore bodies.Pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) is commonly found in association with pentlandite and chalcopyrite in sulfidic Ni ores, such as those found in Sudbury, Ontario, and in Russia, e.g. Norilsk. The vast majority of this pyrrhotite needs to be removed using mineral processing techniques, in order to minimize the Fe and S contents of the concentrates that proceed on to smelting. If all pyrrhotite were left in the concentrate, much more slag and SO2 would be produced, and the smelter throughput would be limited. Beneficiation of Ni sulfide ores leads to the rejection of unwanted constituents as mining wastes, which may still contain extractable amounts of Ni (Edgar Peek et al., 2010)."

The Matagami district lies directly west of Chibougamau on the north side of the Abi tibi greens tone belt. Ores at Matagami are volcanogenic massive sulphides and occur in the dominantly rhyolitic Watson Lake group surrounding the Bell River Igneous Complex. Rhyolites and basalts of this group, and basalts of the overlying Wabassee group in the central part of the district, are tholeiitic; calc-alkaline Wabassee rocks occur in the western part. Massive sulphides occur associated with rhyolite domes that can be delineated by paleotopographic and isopach mapping. "The world's first zinc pressure leaching plant at Cominco's Trail operations started production in 1981. Sullivan zinc concentrate is leached at the rate of 190 tpd in a four-compartment autoclave at elevated temperatures and oxygen pressures to produce a zinc sulphate solution and elemental sulphur. Zinc extraction exceeds 98% and sulphide to elemental sulphur conversion exceeds 95%.The sulphur is recovered from the discharged slurry in the underflow of a hydrocyclone, and is upgraded as a flotation concentrate. The concentrate is dewatered, melted and filtered to produce a polished sulphur product of better than 99% purity. An alternative sulphur recovery process employs an unique sulphur separation method that recovers over 90% of the sulphur in the molten state. The remaining sulphur is recovered by flotation following flash discharge of the slurry. The product slurry containing the zinc sulphate solution and the iron-lead residue joins the existing roast-leach zinc plant for purification and zinc electrowinning.IntroductionIn 1981, Cominco Ltd. commissioned the world's first commercial zinc pressure leaching plant at their Trail operations in British Columbia. As part of a $700 million modernization and expansion program for lead and zinc started in 1977, the company installed the first o f two autoclave trains.Prior to pressure leaching, zinc production was closely tied to acid and fertilizer production. Sulphur dioxide produced from roasting the concentrates had to be converted to sulphuric acid. Thus, any expansion of zinc operations with the roast-leach technology would have required extensive modifications to the acid and fertilizer plants as well as to the roasters. Zinc pressure leaching, on the other hand, offered a one-step dissolution of zinc from the concentrates with high extraction, and production of elemental sulphur. The associated dust and sulphur dioxide generated in the roasting process are both eliminated from the working environment of the pressure leach facility. The flexibility allowed by producing elemental sulphur, and the opportunity to break the sulphuric acid link for about 25 per cent of the targeted 272,000 tonnes per year zinc production was very appealing. The process was successfully demonstrated at a pilot plant in 1977(1-6)."

The corrosion properties of the skin and the bulk of semi-solid processed and high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy were studied in 5% NaCI solution by (a) analysing the corrosion morphology, (b) measuring electrochemical polarization curves, (c) performing electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurements, and (d) immersion tests at constant pH-values. Using XRD, LM, SEM and EDX to evaluate the microstructure of skin and bulk specimens, the corrosion results were related to the microstructures of the particular alloys. However, microstructure and corrosion performance were found to be similar for both production processes, and only slight but distinct differences were found. Generally, the skin corrosion properties are inferior to those of the bulk, with the exception of the high pressure die cast AZ91 alloy, where the finer microstructure of the skin layer exhibits a better performance as showed by impedance studies and confirmed in long term immersion tests.

"Analytical engineering design is based upon a trial-and-error iterative and deterministic process. Within this process, the engineer obtains some estimated values, plugs them into de facto closed-form equations, and receives output, which is expected to be a single number that serves as the basis for the design. This number is typically a factor of safety, or some other equivalent strength-stress ratio. This provides the engineer with a quick and relatively quantitative design methodology. This can create problems however, because in mining applications, the actual in situ system is highly variable, complex and often chaotic, which can lead to potentially incorrect conclusions that result in unsafe designs. A more appropriate and reliable approach is a probabilistic analysis for engineering design. This process is used widely in civil and other engineering disciplines, but is often overlooked for applications in coal mine design. Additionally, it seems the amount of past studies using this approach, especially in coal mine design, are rather limited. Considering how the probabilistic approach can account for uncertainty in parametric values and how unpredictable a mining design can be, the authors believe that this approach has potential in mining. This paper will focus on a summary of past studies related to probabilistic analysis in coal mine pillar design and provide recommendations for future work that could improve design reliability. INTRODUCTIONFeasibility and fundamental design procedures for excavations often start with an assessment of mine openings, pillar design, and the surrounding structure by using a deterministic approach with closedform solutions (ex. Bienawski, Obert-Duvall). These are reliable methods, but designers know that the inputs in these closed-form solutions are estimates at best and do not incorporate any degree of uncertainty. This is therefore not an optimal design procedure.A more appropriate design should incorporate some uncertainty because of the chaotic and variable nature of geology and mining conditions in general. In an attempt to account for uncertainty, a probabilistic approach can be adopted, which accounts for deviations in variables and provides a more optimum design solution. By applying a probabilistic approach, a designer can look at multiple failure scenarios at the same time instead of using the same deterministic design over and over."

This paper deals with the drilling and blasting methods employed at the Cassiar mine, which is located just south of the B.C.-Yukon border. It covers both the "pit" and "peak" mining operations. Specific problems, such as working in frozen ground, are discussed, and the breaking characteristics of the various rock formations are outlined. Selenium, tellurium and other precious metals (OPMs, namely Rh, Ru and Ir) dissolve in the final leaching stage of base metal refineries. Se and Te are typically removed from the copper sulphate leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid. Recovery of dissolved OPMs is desirable because it will reduce OPM inventory and losses. Thiourea is an effective OPM precipitation reagent, but yields insufficient Te removal. Copper is known to enhance Te precipitation when using sulphurous acid as precipitation reagent. The primary objective of this project was to evaluate whether simultaneous precipitation of Se, Te and OPMs using thiourea with metallic copper as precipitation reagents is possible. Batch precipitation tests were performed to evaluate the effect of temperature (50 – 70°C), thiourea addition (160 – 430% excess) and copper addition (2 – 8 g/L) on Se, Te and OPM precipitation. Increasing the temperature from 50°C to 70°C resulted in an average increase of 55.6 percentage points for Se precipitation and 13.5 – 23.5 percentage points for OPM precipitation. The copper addition did not have a significant impact on the precipitation behaviour. Increasing the thiourea addition increased the precipitation of Se and Te, especially when the copper addition was low; Rh and Ru precipitation also increased with up to 10 and 12 percentage points, respectively. Despite these observations, the precipitation of Se was significantly faster when no thiourea was added. It is not currently clear why thiourea appears to inhibit the Se precipitation by reaction with metallic copper. In general, Te precipitation was low (less than 30%) at the conditions investigated. Simultaneous precipitation of Se, Te and OPMs at temperatures below 80°C does not appear to be a viable option; a multiple stage operation for sequential removal of Se and Te with copper followed by OPM precipitation with thiourea would be required.

The paper presents the conceptual basis for the development of an Activity Based Costing system (ABC) for the analysis and estimation of process costs in mining and metallurgy. In particular, it discusses three major thrusts towards attaining increased efficiency in extraction and processing systems: (a) understanding the link between process and expenses, (b) identifying the chemical and physical factors that govern process costs and ( c) using process and cost models of the production systems. The authors have developed computer techniques to analyze data from conventional accounting and apply them to the development of process based ABC systems. The cost causing activities are linked to management units patterned after the organizational structure of the production system. All costs are associated with specific process functions such as charge preparation, smelting, refining, etc. The level of detail is determined by the quality of data available in conventional accounting systems. The system permits data analysis of historical cases and the projection of costs for new production schemes. Results can be presented in various levels of aggregation, following organizational and/or functional structures. The outputs of the system are tabular and graphical, typically following Pareto analysis concepts.

Construction equipment is an important type of resources of heavy construction contractors. Since equipment breakdowns can cause project delays and significant financial losses, the contractors are eager to know those factors causing equipment failures directly or indirectly, related to equipment design, maintenance, and operations. Although Bayesian network can be used for diagnostic analysis of failure events or making predictive analysis, building a Bayesian network for such purpose can be difficult as the cause-effect relations can be subjective and their conditional probabilities change with a wide variety of causal factors. A hybrid approach is proposed in this paper to update the Bayesian diagnostic network structures and parameters using real life data, the conditional probabilities and cause-effect relationships can be dynamically updated with observed failure records to reflect the real life situations of a complex equipment system. A case study is conducted to show the benefits of the hybrid approach in construction equipment diagnostic analysis.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Zeballos mining camp is on the west coast of Vancouver island; 195 nautical miles northwest from Victoria.; The spectacularly rich gold-bearing veins that made Zeballos an important; gold camp were found early in 1934. Small pockets of very coarse; gold had been found earlier under large boulders at the mouth of Spud; creek; and in the autumn of 1933 rich gold-quartz float was found near the; mouth of the creek. The rocky beds of the steep creeks entering Spud creek; were searched for its source and as a result the veins on the White Star property; were found. The Goldfield vein on the Spud Valley property was discovered; in 1935; and the No. 1 vein on the Privateer in 1936. In the general; prospecting activity that quickly followed; other veins were found; not; only in Spud creek but in other creeks draining into Zeballos river.

"Large amounts of oil sand tailings are produced in the Fort McMurray area, including sand, clays, and misplaced bitumen. The objective of the present study (as part of the overall engineered tailings program) is to select and evaluate the role of hydrocyclones in removing most of the solids from the tailings slurry and producing an underflow product containing about 75% solids.Multistage cyclones were evaluated in pilot plant tests. Slurry feeds with different percents solids and increasing ratios of superfines (–44 µm) were used in testing multistage cyclone circuits. A two-stage Linatex separator circuit gave high recovery to the underflow of 98.8% to 99.6% by mass with the desired high solids content in the underflow of 73% to 75% by mass. Changes in feed solids content (20% to 50%) had little or no influence on cyclone underflow recovery and solids content. The keys to achieving such results were the apex control mechanism and operation at relatively low feed pressure (<60 kPa for 23 cm F cyclone) when the feed solids content was high. Increasing superfines above 7% by mass in the feed resulted in a significant reduction in the recovery to the underflow, probably due to the heavy medium generated by excessive amounts of clays in the cyclone. Pilot plant results were better than those predicted by available cyclone simulation models in terms of recovery and solids concentration in the underflow.Increasing cyclone diameter from 23 cm for the Linatex separator to 51 cm for the Krebs cyclone appears to have little or no effect on size cutpoint."

"Rockburst, which often occurs around underground openings in highly stressed hard rocks, is a sudden and violent unstable rock failure and is associated with energy release. Rockburst is very dangerous to workers and mining equipment, and it has been a major concern for deep underground construction and mining. Before excavation, rocks are loaded under a true-triaxial condition. Upon excavation, the rocks at the excavation boundaries are loaded in the maximum principal stress direction and unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction and this provides a necessary condition for unstable rock failure to occur. Understanding rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition is critical for developing measures to control unstable rock failure in underground construction.In this article, an explicit FEM tool is used to simulate rock behavior under true-triaxial unloading condition, with a focus on analyzing stable and unstable failure and the released energy during failure. Firstly, a uniaxial compression test was simulated. The results indicated that the adopted numerical tool was able to simulate stable and unstable failure by varying the Loading System Stiffness (LSS). In this research, Loading System Reaction Intensity (LSRI) was proposed as an indicator to identify stable and unstable failure. Secondly, unstable rock failure under true-triaxial unloading condition was simulated. A rock specimen was loaded in three directions; the lateral pressures (s3 and s2) were kept constant and the vertical stress (s1) was increased to a pre-defined stress. The specimen was suddenly unloaded in the minimum principal stress direction (s3) and loading in the s1 direction was continued until failure occurred. Different LSS values were considered and the results showed that the LSS influenced the failure mode; a soft loading system resulted in more violent failure and released more energy than that in a stiff loading system. The influence of specimen height to width ratio on rock failure was also investigated. It was found that failure in taller specimens was more violent than that in shorter specimens. Insights gained from the simulation are useful for better understanding of the influencing factors on the released kinetic energy during unstable rock failure and to find means to control rockburst damage in engineering practice."

In the period 2003-2004, the situation of the copper concentrate market was unfavourable for smelters and refineries, with low TC/RC values and euro-dollar parity affecting European companies negatively. Within this scenario, Atlantic Copper decided to develop a plan to increase its competitiveness and to improve its results in these market circumstances. The plan affected all departments in the Company and was based mainly on cost reduction in energy and manpower. A general analysis of the Complex&apos;s overall efficiency was carried out and, based on this analysis, two major Projects emerged, "Primavera" and "KF". Each Project consisted of smaller sub-projects which aimed at improving the areas which could perform better according to our general analysis. The paper describes how this entire project developed and the final results obtained by the Company.

Hydrogen generated through aluminum-assisted water split reaction is a novel, efficient and environmentally friendly method. It has been found previously that the passivation of aluminum can be prevented in neutral (pH=7) or near neutral pH conditions in water by grinding aluminum with a catalyst, such as A12O3, SiO2 or SiC. Recently, the best results have been obtained by using water-soluble inorganic salts (WIS), ground with aluminum. The massive, rapid corrosion reaction of the Al-WIS system which takes place in regular tap (or marine, or ground) water can be utilized to produce hydrogen by aluminum-assisted water split reaction, in-situ, on-demand. The reaction offers clean, low-cost, environmentally benign and entirely recyclable technology for on-board on-demand hydrogen generation. Besides pure gaseous hydrogen, only pure solid aluminum hydroxides AlOOH or Al(OH)3 are formed as the reaction products. The hydrogen yield and Al-WIS reaction efficiency are high. From 1 g of mechanically alloyed aluminum powder, up to 1.25 liters of hydrogen were generated, i.e. efficiency up to 92% was achieved. The amount of hydrogen and hydrogen generation rate depend on various reaction parameters. The effect of chemistry and concentration of additives, water temperature, powder particle size and milling conditions on the reaction kinetics will be presented and the possible process mechanism will be discussed.
