The effects of copper on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultrasonic melt treated Al-xCu (x=0, 4) alloys were investigated. The densities of alloys were increased and their grain sizes were decreased by UST. The hardness and electrical resistivity measurements revealed that the amount of solute Cu within Al matrix was increased by UST. Both the yield and tensile strengths of Al-4Cu alloy were increased by UST. The improved mechanical properties of Al-4Cu alloy by UST were probably due to the reduced amount of casting defects (e.g. pore), grain refinement, and enhanced solid-solution hardening of Cu.

"Hydraulic drills, recently implemented at the Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Limited, Bernie Lake Mine, are proving to be an economic alternative to pneumatic drilling systems. The paper describes the application of an electric-hydraulic drill jumbo to the mechanized room-and-pillar mine and its performance. The application of these drills resulted in improved environmental and working conditions.Drill rods and bits are a major cost centre in hard-rock mining applications. The paper also discusses the performance of one manufacturer's product used on the hydraulic drills.IntroductionThe Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Limited (TANCO) started producing tantalum ore from its Bernie Lake pegmatite in 1969. The pegmatite, encased in amphibolite, is shallow seated and flat lying. It is defined by diamond drilling along 4,000 feet of strike and 1,500 feet down dip, ranging in thickness from 60 to 280 feet. Relatively well defined zones of mineralization occur within the pegmatite and form separate orebodies of tantalum, lithium and cesium."

"The planning and design of mining panels in the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc., Lanigan Division mine Block B involved a number of investigative techniques. The techniques utilized to gain insight into the viability of mining included2-D and 3-D seismic surveys, longhole drilling, exploration wells, photo lineament, magnetic and gravity surveys, and actual room excavation.IntroductionPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PCS) owns and operates four potash mines in the province of Saskatchewan. The Lanigan Division mine is located 110 Ian east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, near the town of Lanigan.The Lanigan Mine commenced production in August 1968under the ownership or Alwinsal Potash of Canada Limited. The mine was purchased by PCS in 1977.Lanigan Division's productive capacity is 3.4 million tonnes of product per year. Ore is extracted from the "" B"" zone or Layer III or the Patience Lake member of the Prairie Evaporite, more than 1000m below surface . The Patience Lake member (approximately 20 m thick) consists of potash interbedded with salt. The average run-of-mine ore grade is 21070 K20 (Fig. I).The mine was initially developed using the room-and-pillar technique. Improvements in mining resulted in the use or extensible conveyors in long panel rooms."

"Understanding the frictional properties of discontinuities is crucial to ensure the stability of underground structures. In particular, the frictional behavior at depth depends on the complex interaction among mechanical, hydrological, thermal and chemical characteristics and their coupled effects. In this study, a series of triaxial compression tests were carried out to investigate the behavior of rough shear surface of synthetic rocks. The frictional behavior showed little variation at different confining and water pressures. The test results were analyzed using Coulomb’s failure criterion. In addition, numerical analysis was carried out using PFC2D to simulate the test.INTRODUCTIONUnderstanding coupled behavior of rock at depth is of great importance in design, construction and operation of underground structures such as a disposal facility of radioactive waste, hot dry rock geothermal system and oil reservoir. In particular, many uncertainties are involved in characterizing deep rock mass deformation in the designing process and interactions among fluid flow of groundwater, high temperature and stress disturbance should be considered. Many independent studies have been carried out to investigate the thermal, hydro, mechanical and chemical coupled effects in numerical and experimental methods. They include the researches by Lockner, Summers, Moore and Byerlee (1982), Jafari, Amini Hosseini, Pellet, Boulon and Buzzi (2003), Tembe, Lockner and Wong (2010), Lee, Lee and Jeon (2012), Indraratna, Premadasa, Brown, Gens and Heitor (2014)."

"Geophysical data are often presented on maps, sections or profiles with minimal data processing. A common example is magnetic data, in which the diurnal-free raw readings are merely contoured on a map. Other examples include profile presentation of VLF-EM data, IP pseudo-sections and airborne EM anomalies which may be shown on a map with only the measured amplitudes indicated.In recent years, efforts have been directed to the portraying of data in more useful forms. A number of algorithms (i.e., manipulative procedures and equations) have proven to contribute significantly to the usefulness of geophysical data. Some can be applied manually; others are sufficiently complicated to require a computer. Some merely alter the data to a more useful geometric form without altering the units. Others yield quantitative estimates of source body parameters such as conductivity and shape. Several examples follow:1. A simple algorithm is in common use which transforms noisy non-contourable VLF-EM data into less noisy contourable data. The input is the dip angle in degrees or per cent and the output is also in these same units.2. A simple algorithm has recently been developed which allows multi-level dipole-dipole IP data to be contoured on a map. Again, the units are not altered.3. A relatively complicated algorithm is in common use which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive helicopter EM data into contourable resistivity data,4. An algorithm has been recently developed which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive EM data into contourable weight per cent magnetite.The purpose of all the above techniques is to present the data in a simplified form. This, in turn, allows an easier assimilation by the user of much of the information content of the data."

"As sulphide ores are usually concentrated by flotation , the material is very finely ground <37um), wet and impregnated with the chemicals used in flotation. These conditions are favourable to the development ofchemical reactions which are largely influenced by atmospheric conditions (temperature, humidity, wind, etc.) as well as by the geometry of the piles.Physical and chemical properties of a chalcopyrite concentrate were determined by laboratory tests. The knowledge of these properties was considered necessary in order to establish a correct design of the storage and handling operations of the sulphide ore concentrates obtained by flotation.The properties studied in this work were: transportable moisture limit, flowability, effects of vibration, hygroscopicity, ""caking"", chemical alterations by humidity, oxidation and self-heating (auto-ignition, dry and wet oxidation, self-heating by humidification and its prevention).INTRODUCTIONIn order that the handling and the transport of a powdered material may be carried out correctly, it is necessary to know certain physico-chemical characteristics. Transportable moisture limit (TML), apparent density (both aerated and compacted), compressibility, angle of repose, angle of spatula, cohesion and angle of slide(l-4) are characteristics (among the flowability parameters) worth knowing.Moisture content of the powdered material is fundamental, because if this is too low heavy losses will occur when the product&apos;s particle size is very small, if it is too high, separations between solid and liquid phases may occur. In the latter case, the centre of gravity of the system may change suddenly and cause accidents, mainly if transport is by sea or by river."

The Similkameen Division of Newmont Mines Limited operates a low-grade open-pit copper mine in southern British Columbia. The copper mineralization is extremely erratic.As a result, over seven years of operation, ore control methods have evolved from standard flagging based on blast-hole assays, through an in-pit grab sampling system, to the present method of mining to computer-determined ore-waste boundaries based on geostatistics. These improved ore control methods have resulted in a gain of at least 25% on ore tonnage miffed, at the same grade as obtained using earlier techniques. At the same time, geostatistical ore reserve estimates are now within 7% of milled ore tonnage and grade on a yearly basis, whereas the original polygon ore reserves under-estimated mineable ore tonnage by 15% to 45% and over-estimated grade by about 20%. The author discusses why traditional ore estimation methods give poor results in erratically mineralized orebodies and describes the geostatistical approach to the problem.

Dans les rejets de flottation, cela justifie par contre de 15 à 25% des pertes totales en cuivre, Ie reste se retrouvant sous forme de tres petits globules de sulfures de cuivre ou de cuivre métallique, en moyenne de 2 à 3 micromètres de diamètre et bien emprisonnes dans Ie verre.SUMMARYThe slag produced by the Noranda continuous smelting process usually contains about 5% copper. It is processed as a conventional copper ore at the concentrator of Noranda Mines. The flotation tailings still often contain more than 0.3% Cu. The slag is mainly constituted by magnetite, fayalite and a siliceous glass. Evidently, the copper occurs mostly as sulphides and, to a lesser extent, as metallic copper. However the glass contains a small amount of this metal in solution, between 0.14 and 0.33% on an average, depending upon the investigated sample. This represents scarcely 1% of the total copper in the crude slag, but as much as 15 to 25% of this metal in the flotation tailings, in which the major part of the copper occurs as very small globules of copper sulphides or metallic copper with an average diameter of about 2 to 3 um and well-locked in the glass."

These problems are certainly not lightened by that familiar monster lurking in the shadows-taxation! Recent taxation trends in Canada, and the existing tax regimes for the mining industry, continue to be a major bugaboo.This examination by ""Tax Notes"" of the impact of current taxation trends on the mining industry is based on a speech delivered recently by Robert D. Brown, senior tax partner of Price Waterhouse, Canada, to the annual meeting of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers in Dallas.IntroductionThe purpose of this paper is to tell a story-and it is a story with a moral. The first thing to recognize is that, with depressed metal prices and weakening western economies, high taxes, in and of themselves, are not really the cause of the Canadian mining industry&apos;s present doldrums. However, the character and level of mining taxes in Canada has had a profound influence on the development of the industry over the past decade, and the expectations of what the future holds for mining men in Canada will equally play an important role in the future development of the Canadian industry. Our tax system has, in the past, served as a negative and destabilizing influence in the mining industry: it has contributed to a major short-fall in investment commitments and hence in the contribution which the mining industry can make to the Canadian economy, and the adverse effect on the industry of previous high marginal tax rates was made far worse by the confusing, contradictory and perverse nature of the tax system itself."

In recent years, there has been a heightened interest in the hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores and concentrates (especially copper sulfide ores and concentrates) mostly in the USA and Chile. Currently, hydrometallurgical operations account for about 30% of the primary copper production. In the present research, the leaching phenomena of IOCG (iron-oxide hosted copper-gold) ores and concentrates were studied. The IOCG ore, which is characterized as having a predominant amount of magnetite with fine chalcopyrite, is currently the center of attention for new copper resources. Heap leaching of IOCG ore is desirable because of its low cost. However, the leaching characteristics of the ores and concentrates and the mechanisms of copper leaching require investigation. This study defines the factors, which affect the leaching operation, such as the ORP, pH and oxidizing agents. Based on these results, the optimal leaching conditions are provided for pilot column leaching test and ultimately, commercial operations.

The La Caridad copper smelter, located in Nacozari, Mexico, have started a multi-year plan to reduce sulfur dioxide and particulate matter emissions into the environment. In 2014 the smelter completed a voluntary plant-wide SO2 process emissions inventory as part of the smelter’s proactive environmental stewardship policy. In turn, this triggered the development of several environmental projects to alleviate these emissions. A strategy consisting of improved capture efficiency of the sources with greatest impact has been followed to maximize cost-effectiveness. The reduction of secondary emissions from the Teniente Converter, as well as of primary and secondary emissions from the Peirce-Smith Converters have been key areas of priority. Additionally, a new system to capture and recover particulate matter from the Anode Refining Furnaces off-gas is also in the process of being implemented. This paper presents an overview of the work developed behind this effort and the smelter’s vision towards a greener future. INTRODUCTION The La Caridad copper smelter is owned and operated by Metalurgica de Cobre S.A. de C.V. (a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico). Currently, the smelter has a production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of anodic copper per year. The smelter is coupled with a 300,000 t/y electrolytic refinery. Other by-products (such as precious metals and sulfuric acid) are also generated as part of an integrated process. The original smelter started operating in 1986 with one Furukawa concentrate dryer, one Outokumpu Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF), two slag cleaning electric furnaces (SCFs), three Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs), two Anode Refining Furnaces (ARFs) and one casting wheel. In 1997, a plant expansion project was concluded with the installation of one steam dryer, one Modified Teniente Converter (MTC), one additional ARF, one additional casting wheel, and the electrolytic refinery [1]. Over the years, the smelter management has implemented numerous environmental projects to alleviate SO2 and particulate matter (PM) emissions. The smelter process gas handling system captures the process gases from the FSF, MTC, and the three PSCs. The process gases are cleaned and conditioned and sent to the two acid plants. The first acid plant (with a capacity of 226,000 Nm3/h, wet basis) was commissioned in 1988 to process the FSF and PSC off-gases. A second acid plant (with a capacity of 195,000 Nm3/h, wet basis) was commissioned as part of the smelter expansion project [1]. The PSCs also have a secondary gas handling system with a dedicated baghouse and stack. The Furukawa dryer off-gas reports to a dedicated electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for dedusting before venting via a local stack. Process gas from the two SCFs, along with hygiene ventilation from various sources inside the smelter (including matte and slag tapping hoods from the FSF) report to a baghouse-based gas handling system and vent to atmosphere via a local stack. The original ARFs do not have an off-gas handling system, however, each ARF has a post- combustion chamber which naturally vents the process gases to the atmosphere via a dedicated stack.

The mining of high-grade, narrow vein deposits is an important field of activity in the precious metal mining sector. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise dilution, the Thermal Fragmentation Mining Method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 50 cm to 1 metre wide (according to the width of the vein), between two sub-level drifts. By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and compressed air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction is created, spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 80 cm in diameter. The remaining ore between the thermal holes is broken loose using low powered explosives, leaving the waste walls intact. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400% - 500% less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method reduces the environmental affects of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a 2-person team (1 thermal fragmentation operator, 1 drilling operator) maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, and increases productivity and safety. The Thermal Fragmentation is currently employed in 3 mining operations in North America.

Short term electrodeposition experiments (up to 80 min.) at two current densities 220 and 275 A/m2 with varying concentrations of thiourea and glue were performed to determine the optimum levels of glue, thiourea and current density for industrial copper electrorefining. White Light Interference Microscopy was used to acquire digital images of the morphology of the electrodeposited copper. Scaling analysis was employed to pa-rameterize the morphological information encoded in the images. The limiting rough¬ness, *, the critical scaling length, Lc, and the aspect ratio, 4*/ Lc, were determined as a function of the deposition time and the amount of organic additives. These parameters were used to calculate the dynamic exponent, B, the roughness exponent, 1/z, and the as¬pect ratio exponent, y, plotted as a function of glue and thiourea concentrations. These 3D plots allowed us to find conditions corresponding to the minimum of B and y, at which the deposited copper is characterized by a small roughness and a dense structure.

Common water-miscible organic solvents including DMSO, DMF, methanol, ethanol, acetone and THF in combination with HCl and low concentrations of H2O2 were investigated for dissolution of gold. THF showed the best result demonstrating that gold powder could be completely dissolved in 1.5 hours in 1.0 mol/L HCl and 0.2 mol/L H2O2. No complete gold dissolution was observed for the rest of solvents even after 24 hours. The rate of gold dissolution was measured by dissolving gold wire in THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture. The rate of gold dissolution in optimised condition was 75 g m-2 h-1 at room temperature and significantly increased to 590 g m-2 h-1 by raising the temperature up to 60 oC. Although a THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture showed a slower dissolution rate in comparison with aqua regia, however the applied conditions are considerably milder which is highly promising for gold leaching in an industrial scale.

The Problem The Don deposit is a series of two sub-vertical zones that pose a number of challenges with respect to modeling and interpolation. The first challenge is that, based on data and observations, the mineralization and, more importantly, the grade is layered or banded and is stratigraphically controlled. The second challenge is that, due to the undulations of the deposit and extreme changes in dip, using a standard oriented ellipse to guide the estimation process is not appropriate and does not result in an estimate that is representative on a local scale. In order to solve this problem an adapted methodology of relative elevation modelling, has been devised to effectively model and estimate deposits faced with these challenges. Kansanshi Copper Smelter commenced operation in March 2015. The smelter features four Peirce- Smith Converters (PSCs) operated in a three hot, two blowing configuration. This paper describes some of the process automation and design features implemented to maximize operational and environmental performance. To ensure that the converters were easy to operate, efficient, and were protected in emergency situations such as power failures or loss of tuyere air supply a significant focus was placed on automated sequences initiated by “one button” operator commands or otherwise automatically by the Distributed Control System (DCS). Examples include: main converter roll-in and roll-out sequences; emergency roll-out in the event of power failure; and the charging sequences for reagents (silica and reverts). Other automated features configured for the PSCs were specifically aimed at maximizing converter capacity and reducing the environmental impact from fugitive emissions. These features include: “one button” in-stack charging; automated restriction of blowing rate based on the available acid plant capacity; and fully-automated control logic for the Secondary Ventilation System. In-stack charging allows anode furnace oxide slag to be poured into the PSCs while the converters are still blowing and still sending off-gas to the acid plant. PSC Secondary Ventilation control logic was configured to require minimum input from the operators while ensuring maximum utilization of the available draft from the ventilation system. Highly automated PSC controls contribute to high utilization, averaging 41.2 in-stack hours per day. INTRODUCTION Kansanshi Copper Smelter (KCS) is located near Solwezi at Kansanshi copper mine in Zambia's Northwestern province. The smelter treats concentrate produced at Kansanshi mine as well as Sentinel mine located 150 km west of Solwezi. Four Peirce-Smith Converters (PSCs) are installed at KCS. The nominal capacity of each converter is to treat 350 t of copper matte and produce up to 250 t of blister copper per batch. Normally three PSCs are hot, with two able to operate (produce off-gas), and the third converter on hot standby. The fourth converter is normally under cold repairs. The blister charge size is relatively low for the matte charged due to the unavailability of tank house or other high copper scrap.
