"The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. "At present, theoretical concepts of gravitational separation processes are mainly limited by the study of the interaction between a flow and a solitary particle. Then the main conclusions of this analysis are applied to a mass process. However, this analysis is absolutely insufficient, because some elementary phenomena such as the ingress of coarse particles into the fine product output and vice versa cannot be interpreted from its standpoint. It is also impossible to predict the results of the classification of a material with a specific granulometric composition on a specific apparatus on its basis.In the present paper, an extended model of the process is suggested. The model is based on the behavior of all the particles of a specific narrow size class, and not on that of an individual particle. Similarity criteria of the process, which were empirically derived previously, are obtained from the analysis of this model.INTRODUCTIONIn case of gravitational separation, a part of solid phase moves, as a rule, vertically upwards with the flow, while another part settles against the flow. This flow is extremely complicated and chaotic due to various random factors. Among these factors are mass interactions of particles with each other and with the apparatus walls, non-uniform character of concentration and velocity fields, turbulent vortices and local fluctuations, real particles shape difference from spherical one, etc.Particles rotation results in a transverse force (Magnus' effect). At the motion of a non-rotating particle in a non-uniform velocity field, a transverse force also arises (Saffman's effect).A great number of publications have been devoted to the account for all these factors in two-phase flows in recent decades. Very complicated models have been developed, but the problem has not been completely solved as yet [1, 3].At the same time, simplified models of the behavior of a solitary particle in a flow are being developed. Despite their schematic nature, such models often prove to be useful for establishing general laws of the process and its similarity criteria [1]."

Company-community agreements are widely considered to be a practical mechanism for recognising the rights, needs and priorities of peoples impacted by mining, for managing impacts and ensuring that miningderived benefits are shared. The use and application of company?community agreements is increasing globally. Notwithstanding the utility of agreements, the gender dimensions of agreement processes in mining have rarely been studied. Prior research on women and mining, however, does show that women are often more adversely impacted by mining than men, and face greater challenges in accessing development opportunities that mining can bring, however there is currently little to no guidance for companies, government or communities in terms of bringing a gender perspective to the fore in mining and agreement processes. While it is undisputed in human development literature that investment in women and sensitivity to gender delivers long-term health, education and local development outcomes, a number of key factors remain unexplored in debates about mining and development. These include: women?s participation in agreement processes, the gendered distribution of agreement benefits, and the extent to which impacts and benefits influence (either positively or negatively) women?s development and economic inclusion. This paper presents the results of an applied research project undertaken by the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) at The University of Queensland and funded by a partnership between the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). The project sought to connect with practitioners who had been directly involved in agreement processes to hear grounded perspectives on the interaction of gender dynamics and agreements, and connect those experiences with the broader literature. Findings from this study have implications for the role of companies and governments in promoting gender equality and empowerment as part of their commitments to sustainable development. A key challenge for companies will be navigating the territory of cultural norms and gender equality. The authors argue that without consideration of the gender perspective, and appropriate responses, mining agreements may not be inclusive or representative and may exacerbate gender inequalities and fail to contribute to long-term sustainable development.

Gold-bearing quartz veins with auriferou pyritic wall rock alteration haloes at the Komis deposit near Waddy Lake in northern Saskatchewan occur in fractured Archean intermediate volcanic rock flanking a plutonic felsic intrusion. Three ore zones totalling 1.5 million tonnes grading five g/t gold have resulted from a combination of patterns of high density of fracture-filling quartz veins created by contrasting competencies of four predominant rock types and preferential gold deposition in magnetitebearing andesite host rock. Pre-glacial surface weathering remobilized gold from a nearby pyritized intermediateto- felsic dyke to form the EP Zone with a wide variety of supergene accessory minerals. Much of the EP Zone wa eroded by glacial action to forn1 a highly anomalous gold-bearing till dispersion train which facilitated its di covery.

Elemental sulfur was stockpiled at the Mount Polley Mine for use as a source of sulfuric acid as part of research into leaching copper from oxide ores, but the project did not proceed beyond an initial pilot- scale evaluation. Since placement, the sulfur has oxidized and some sulfuric acid leached into the underlying rock. The reaction of the acid with these underlying materials has been studied as part of an evaluation of the effects of leachate from the pile. The rock underneath the sulfur pile is composed dominantly of primary and secondary alumino-silicates with less than 1% carbonate (calcite) and iron sulfide (pyrite). In its unaltered condition, the rock is classified as non-acid generating. Conceptually, it was expected the sulfuric acid would be neutralized by the rock to varying degrees resulting in a series of pH-controlled weathering fronts progressing from leached near the contact with the sulfur pile (pH <3), to active neutralization by silicates (pH 4–5), to active neutralization by carbonates (pH >7). The rocks underneath the pile were sampled to determine the extent to which the rocks had reacted and their long-term stability after removal of the acid source. INTRODUCTION When rock is blasted and excavated to facilitate mining ore, it is typically placed and stored on the surface in piles. The resulting drainage may have a neutral to basic pH (i.e., non-acidic drainage) or a low pH (i.e., acid rock drainage, ARD) depending on the mineralogy of the rock being stored in the piles. Acid- base accounting (ABA) can be used to characterise the two types of rock: potentially acidic drainage generating (PAG) and not potentially acidic drainage generating (NAG) (Price, 2009). According to Price (2009), NAG is defined as having an excess of neutralization potential (NP) in the rock in the form of calcium carbonate-like minerals when compared to acid potential (AP), i.e., a Neutralization Potential Ratio (NP/AP = NPR) greater than 2.0, whereas PAG is classified as having an excess of AP (i.e., an NPR less than 1.0). This is a conservative estimate and may be slightly modified depending on the mineralogy at specific mine sites. Rock with an NPR of 1–2 is also capable of generating acid (Price, 2009) and, depending on the mineralogy, may also be classified as PAG. Drainage from PAG material can generate acid immediately, or many years after it has been exposed to surface conditions. Disposal techniques depend on the category (i.e., NAG or PAG) and reactivity of the rock stored in the piles.

"J. S. Redpath Limited, an underground contractor with a worldwide presence, has implemented innovative techniques in various projects in Canada to shorten the development cycle. Conventional methods currently used for installing primary ground support are compared with the Australian technique of bolting and meshing with jumbos equipped with twin telescopic booms, in-cycle shotcreting, and the use of two jumbos and two scissor bolters set up side by side in wide headings. Recommendations and lessons learned are presented with the aim of providing realistic expectations with regard to development advance rates in a mining environment.RÉSUMÉ J. S. "La Mine Doyon is a gold mining operation located in northwestern Quebec, approximately 35 km east of Rouyn-Noranda and 85 km west of Val d&apos;Or. The mine is jointly owned by Lac Minerals Ltd. and Cambior Inc. with Lac Minerals as the manager. Production statistics as of February 1987 are 6.4 million tonnes milled at an average grade of5.8 g/t Au. Current reserves of9.9 million tonnes at 5. 7 g/ t Au to a depth of400m have been outlined. Indicated reserves below this horizon could considerably increase this reserve.The mine currently consists of two open pit and two underground mine operations, producing approximately 3600 tonnes per day of ore at an average grade of6 g/t. The ore is currently processed at the La Mine Doyon mill at a rate of1400tid and at Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill at 1950 t/d. Ore is also processed intermittently at Lac&apos;s Les Terrains Auriferes mill and at Noranda&apos;s Horne Division.La Mine Doyon is currently in the midst of a program to expand and upgrade the mill at La Mine Doyon. The expansion to 3000 t/day includes the conversion of the existing crushing and grinding circuits to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill circuit and the existing filter wash plant to a CIP (carbon-in-pulp) recovery plant. The economics of this project are based on reduced operating costs (milling and trucking) and improved recovery due to updated technology. HistoryThe area between Noranda and Val d&apos;Or has a long history of mining activity in both base metals and gold, dating back to the early 1930s. More recently, several new orebodies have been discovered and exploited in the area including La Mine Doyon, Lac&apos;s Mine de Bousquet, Dumagami, and the Kiena operation.La Mine Doyon was discovered in the early 1970s, and brought into limited production in late 1979. The mine was started on are reserves of 2.75 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t and was, thus, considered a small, short-term operation. Mining started at an initial rate of 550 tI d with all the ore being shipped to Noranda&apos;s Horne smelter as flux. When Lac&apos;s East Malartic mill became available for custom milling, Doyon commenced shipping to that facility at a rate of 650 t/d. As a result of some equipment additions and an improved understanding of the ore, the East Malartic mill throughput was gradually increased from 650 t/d to the current rate of 1950 t/d."

"A gold bearing concentrate containing 107 g/T of gold, 9.3% copper and 706 ppm of mercury was processed at the demonstration scale for the extraction of gold and copper using a cyanide free process. The concentrate was generated through flotation to upgrade the gold and copper grade, but also showed contamination with mercury. This concentrate was submitted to the DST process demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluidized bed to produce a calcine. The mercury was volatilized during the oxidation stage with an efficiency higher than 98%. The mercury was condensed and removed from the sulfuric acid using a thiosulphate process. Copper was extracted from the calcine as copper sulphate using diluted sulfuric acid. The solid remaining after acid leaching was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Under optimized conditions, a gold extraction of 97.3% was achieved in the chlorination reactor. Gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation on silica using a DST proprietary process.INTRODUCTION Dundee Sustainable Technologies Inc. (DST) offers proprietary metallurgical processes for the treatment of material from the mining industry. DST processes enable the extraction of precious metals and for the removal and stabilization of contaminants, such as arsenic, from ores and concentrates. DST provides environmentally-friendly, viable and efficient processes, capable of handling complex and refractory ores which cannot be processed with conventional approaches due to metallurgical issues or environmental considerations. Several mining jurisdictions around the world have banned or restricted the use of cyanide. DST has developed a closed loop chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from minerals. The tailings from the process are inert from toxic substances such as cyanide and organic compounds, are sulphide depleted which means they do not generate acid, and thus, meet and/or exceed environmental norms. The process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. Moreover, the closed loop process does not generate any liquid effluent and does not consume much water: it only requires a water make-up to compensate for moisture leaving with the tailings and by-products, and seawater may be used. The improved environmental footprint of the DST process has been certified by the Environment Technology Validation program (ETV) which provides an independent evaluation of the performance claims of innovative technologies."

The microscope is now used extensively not only in the examination of solid ore but also in the determination of fragmental mill products. It has therefore become a matter of paramount importance to be able to mount and polish fragmental as well as solid specimens in the easiest and most efficient way, so that the minerals present may be readily determined. In the case of the solid ore the ordinary mount of plasticine set on a glass or metal slide serves for most practical purposes. An improvement on this is furnished by the small brass container inside of which the specimen is mounted in a cementing medium of sealing wax. The latter is the method in use at Harvard University. It has the advantage of uniform height, thus obviating the necessity of a slide of any sort. It is also easily catalogued as the brass holder may be stamped with a convenient series of letters and numbers that will serve as a label. Other advantages of this type are the ease with which any particular part of the section may be re-located, the excellent storing facilities afforded by mounts of uniform size, and the possibility of polishing ten or a dozen sections at the same time by means of a holder which is placed over the polishing wheel, is geared with it, but revolves the opposite way.

"Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies. MODELS of mines may be classified under three headings: (a) sheet models, (b) solid models, and (c) skeleton models. Sheet Models are made of sheets of glass, celluloid, or a transparent plastic material. The sheets are mounted in a frame which holds them in a parallel position, either horizontally or vertically. Mine plans are traced on the horizontal sheets; sections on the vertical sheets. The model may be illuminated by electric lights which are separated from the sheets by an opalescent screen. It is viewed from above or from the side in such a way that the plans or sections are superimposed. Sheet models are very useful for the illustration of mines with narrow, steep-dipping veins, but they do not give a satisfactory representation of a large mine with a flat-dipping vein. Large sheets of glass are difficult to handle and to support in a frame.? It is difficult to see through a considerable number of them. Solid Models are made of plaster, concrete, wood, or other material usually in the form of slabs in which the mine workings are indicated by properly dimensioned cavities in the model. The slabs are coloured to show the veins, country rock, faults, etc. The model is divided along selected sections in order to give access to the interior by the temporary removal of parts. Solid models may be used to illustrate large orebodies of the Sullivan type, but they are cumbersome because parts must be removed to study details of structure. Skeleton Models are ones in which the underground cavities are represented by metal, wood, plaster, or wax proportionately shaped and held in place by a frame. They illustrate the work which has been done but do not show the position of the veins, dykes, faults, etc., in the unworked parts. It is necessary to project by eye between workings in order to determine the location of these features. The essential difference between the skeleton model and the solid model is that the skeleton model represents the mine workings by solid forms and does not show the unworked parts of the vein, whereas the solid model shows the vein as a solid and the mine workings as cavities in it. The skeleton model lends itself well to the representation of a large mine with large stopes.

In recent years more emphasis has been placed on the control of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions from mining diesel equipment. Worldwide, diesel engine regulations to control emission and protect the environment are also driving the development of the diesel engine technology to reduce oxides of nitrogen NOx (Nitric oxide, NO + NO2). NOx are toxic gases produced in mines during the operation of diesel equipment. Most of the diesel equipment used in underground operations are equipped with Diesel Oxidization Catalysts (DOCs) designed to reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). The effects of DOCs on NO2 production from diesel powered equipment is not well understood. DOCs do not alter NOx concentration, but may promote the oxidization of engine exhaust NO to the more toxic NO2, thus increasing the undesirable NO2 exposure of workers in the mine environment. In 2012, the ACGIH reduced the NO2 TLV concentration value from 3 ppm to 0.2 ppm. Vale and CanmetMINING have been involved in several research projects to reduce diesel emissions exposure to workers. One aspect of the current program is to determine the effects of in-use DOCs on NO2 production. Several in-use DOCs taken from mining equipment were selected for testing in the laboratory using ISO 8178-C1 and mine LHD transient test cycles. The paper presents the laboratory test results and effects of DOCs on NO2 production. The results indicate significant reductions in CO concentration, by over 77%, while increases in NO2 varied from 46% to 315% based on the ISO 8178-C1 8-mode steady state test cycle. The mine LHD transient test cycle showed the same pattern, although the magnitude of CO reduction was less. Consequently, it is recommended the use of only those DOCs that have been properly evaluated and shown not to significantly increase NO2 emission in the environment be used on mine equipment.

"The successful commissioning and ramp up of the Albion Process™ at the GPM Gold Project relied on the successful scaling up of the process from batch and continuous pilot plant campaigns (Voigt et al., 2015). Critical information about reaction kinetics and residence time, grind size and pulp density were determined at the laboratory scale and successfully applied to the commercial scale. A limitation of small scale testwork, is that some parameters cannot be measured reliably and scaling up is a function of the physical size of the equipment which isn’t possible to test with laboratory scale equipment. Oxygen mass transfer rate is one such parameter since this is a complex interaction of many factors including slurry temperature, solution and slurry chemistry, slurry viscosity, agitator type, dimensions and power, oxygen bubble residence time, oxygen purity, tank geometry and oxygen injection technique. Oxygen generation represents an important operating cost for the Albion Process™. Pivotal to the Albion Process™ operating economically at atmospheric pressure is the capability to efficiently transfer oxygen while utilising as much oxygen injected to the process as possible. To respond to this Glencore Technology developed the HyperSpargeTM supersonic gas injector. This paper compares the HyperSparge™ against other sparging techniques to quantify the benefits of oxygen injection via a supersonic gas jet on scale up of the oxygen mass transfer system. The paper then examines plant survey data from the GPM Gold Project to demonstrate the very high oxygen utilisation that can be achieved with a correctly designed oxygen mass transfer system.INTRODUCTION One of the main challenges in chemical reactor design is the scale-up of processes from the laboratory to industrial scale. Processes which cannot be faithfully simulated with an experiment at the laboratory scale face challenges due to the physical dimensions and complexity of full scale operation. One example of this is the design of oxygen mass transfer systems in atmospheric oxidative leaching circuits such as the Albion Process™. A number of constraints associated with the use of laboratory scale equipment to design full scale circuits are involved in gas mass transfer processes in agitated slurries such as the Albion Process. Chiefly, typical laboratory and pilot size equipment lacks the required volume to provide useful design data without relying on empirical correlations: the specific agitator power input is artificially high, the bubble residence time in the vessel is artificially low, the oxygen partial pressure at the base of the vessel is artificially low and the oxygen delivery method may differ significantly to the industrial process. Further, the dynamic nature of the process introduces additional impacts on gas mass transfer, including the presence of solids, recycle streams and minor elements, plus the variances within the reality of a process plant such as disruptions or variance of feed quality."

"This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeastern British Columbia (Peace River or Northeast Block) inner foothills metallurgical coal belt. Gates Formation, Fort St. John Group, is the primary target; Gething Formation, Bullhead Group, is secondary. This part of the belt remains wilderness when compared to its other parts. Practical formational and structural mapping is described. A local problem known as the Secus Mountain or Mount Belcourt conglomerates is discussed. The three major explorers have been Denison Mines, PetroCanada, and Crows Nest Resources, all with partners. Initial mine construction and rail spur construction are continuing. The new town of Tumbler Ridge is being built. Introduction This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeast British Columbia metallurgical coal belt. The area (Fig. 1) trends 120 km northwest from the Alberta border to the Wolverine River and Bullmoose Creek. The belt averages 15 km in width, and is 20 km at its widest. Physiographically, the area is dominated by rugged inner foothills, with relief to 1,500 m. The trend of the structures is transected by a dozen rivers flowing southwest to northeast away from the Continental Divide. The Rockies, lying immediately to the west, control the climate. One fact continues to colour all coal work in the area. When compared to the other parts of the western Canadian foothills and Rockies coking belt, it remains the least accessible and least mapped portion. Lack of access also makes all work expensive. Current activity centres about two mines in construction at the northwestern end of the area. Denison Mines and partners are developing their Quintette project, and Teck Corporation and partners are developing their Bullmoose project. PetroCanada and partners have intensively explored their Monkman-Duke Mounta,in project, but mine construction awaits better economic times. The rest of the area remains lightly explored, with the exception of some intensive work on particular structures by Denison and Petro-Canada. The focus of coal work has been metallurgical bituminous coal seams contained primarily in the Gates Formation (Fig. 2) and secondarily in the Gething Formation. These formations are found in generally en-echelon structures ranging to several kilometres in width."

ABSTRACT; Agnico-Eagle’s LaRonde mine is one of the deepest mines in Canada. Ground conditions in the deeper levels can be very challenging, ranging from hard and brittle to soft and squeezing. As a result, rock mechanics and ground control practices have had to evolve considerably to accommodate progressively deeper mining activities. This paper focuses on the deeper levels of mines and how the difficult ground conditions encountered there have influenced the mining strategy. The first section examines ground control practices and support systems in highly stressed, poor quality rock. The evolution of level layout is also presented. Finally, improvements in stope sequencing are reviewed.

"While it might seem like heresy to suggest that ""taxation"" can be a source of financing, never the less some generous tax rules can considerably enhance the tax savings pertaining to a particular expenditure or project. A basic tax knowledge, and careful tax planning, can optimize government participation in a project. INTRODUCTIONIn trying to identify sources of financing for a project, ""government"" as a source of funding is normally thought of in terms of government grants, loan guarantees, interest rate buy downs, property tax waivers, hydro subsidies, and so on. Generally, such concessions are somewhat difficult to obtain, especially in the current period of apparent fiscal restraint. One source of government funding which should not be overlooked is the income tax regime, and, at the provincial level, the various provincial mining tax regimes.While the taxpayer would not normally view a tax system as a potential source of government financing, nevertheless various federal and provincial rules applicable to the mining industry can offer attractive tax deductions - and tax savings - with respect to particular expenditures. In fact, it is not unusual for a civil servant to refer to a tax deduction as a tax ""subsidy"". For example, in the right circumstances, the cost of a smelter expansion in New Brunswick would cost the operator only 31 cents on the dollar, with the federal and provincial governments paying for the other 69 cents by foregoing tax revenues (Table I). In a sense, such tax savings could be compared to a government grant equal to 69% of project costs. Of course, not every project expenditure will generate that degree of government funding. The fact of the matter is that the percentages of tax savings attached to different expenditures cover a wide range, depending on a complex mix of factors. The point to understand is that the tax rules can offer some valuable savings, even after tax reform, and that a basic knowledge of the tax rules can yield some fruitful rewards."
