"The paper reviews the history of modern iron control processes in hydrometallurgy. Particular attention is paid to the processes developed in the 1960s by the electrolytic zinc industry for the removal of iron from zinc sulphate leach liquors - namely the Jarosite, Goethite and Hematite processes. Problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes are discussed. The lessons learnt over the past half century by the zinc industry are projected on to the current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for the treatment of copper sulphide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a “hydrometallurgical copper smelter” is doomed to ultimate failure, unless and until methods are developed that can recover iron from solution in a form that can be directly utilised by the steel or pigment industries.INTRODUCTIONYou suddenly realise that age is catching up with you and that technology is moving on apace when you are asked to talk about the history of a process or a technology that you’ve grown up with. Such was my reaction when, out of the blue, I received an email last year from the chairman of the CIM’s Historical Metallurgy Committee, asking me if I would give a talk on the early developments of iron control in hydrometallurgy. Once I’d got over the initial shock of realising that I had now become living history, I was of course flattered that the invitation was to give a talk at the prestigious IMPC, a conference series that has been going for as long as I have been in the business. That this particular IMPC was to include the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, made the invitation even more appealing and appropriate, because I was the co-chairman of the First Symposium on Iron Control, together with my old friend, John Dutrizac (known by many as Dr Jarosite), which was held 30 years ago in Toronto.first became involved with iron at the very start of my career in hydrometallurgy – the research topic for my Masters degree thesis at UBC, back in the mid 1960s, was “Reductive leaching of Goethite with SO2”. My thesis supervisor was the late Professor Ian Warren, who himself was a protégé of Professor Frank Forward, one of the founding fathers of modern hydrometallurgy. Little did I realise at that time, now 50 years ago, that the problem of iron and how to deal with it in hydrometallurgical processes would be a theme that followed me throughout much of my 40-year career in academia."

"The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig or FCTR is a highly instrumented, mobile flotation pilot plant built by Baker Process (now EIMCO) for the AMIRA P9 Project for use in flotation plant modelling and simulation studies. With the Mintek Floatstar system controlling the level in every cell, and the facility for full stream sampling on all streams, the FCTR is a unique tool for producing data of sufficient quality for flotation plant modelling. The plant was commissioned at Lonmin's Karee and Eastern Platinum concentrators in 1999/2000, and completed a number of test work programs to investigate the effect of power input and regrinding on metallurgical performance. Lonmin's experience with the FCTR has caused it to build two of its own to undertake further projects on its various mines. "Taseko Mines Limited recommenced operation of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine in 2004 and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3) project included a second stand-alone copper-molybdenum concentrator, a stand-alone molybdenum separation plant and associated services. Ausenco was contracted to commence the detailed design in 2Q2011, commissioning commenced in 4Q2012 and first ore was processed in 1Q2013. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the GDP3 Concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Gibraltar Mine (Gibraltar) property is located in the Cariboo Region of south central British Columbia, approximately 360 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The site is accessed via an 18 kilometer paved road from the town of McLeese Lake, which is located on the province’s main north-south highway between the cities of Williams Lake and Quesnel. Gibraltar was originally developed by Placer Development and commenced production in 1972. Gibraltar was acquired, while on care and maintenance, by Taseko Mines Limited (Taseko) in 1999 during a period of unusually low metal prices. Taseko recommenced operations at Gibraltar in 2004, and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The 1972 Gibraltar process flowsheet incorporated two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling and flotation. In 2008 Gibraltar completed their first development stage that included the installation of a SAG mill, converting the existing rod mills to ball mills and adding additional flotation capacity. Gibraltar continued development with the installation of an in-pit primary crusher, expansion of the bulk regrind circuit, expansion of the cleaner flotation circuit, replacement of the tailings pumping system and replacement of the concentrate filters and dryer."

The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

"Industry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has adopted a practice of leach operation using a defined pH or gpl acid in the raffinate based on the column test program. The acid consumption can be easily calculated using the leach operating parameters of SX-EW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate. The column leach test results and a column to heap efficiency factor are used to define the copper extraction. The maximum acid consumption will occur when zero acid is contained in the raffinate. The term Net Extracted Value (NEV) is to define the maximum extracted value relative to acid consumed.This paper presents the operating logic and method used to calculate acid consumption based on column tests and operating parameters.INTRODUCTIONIndustry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. This may result in lower economic value if the tests are not designed to account for operating variables. A test program is described to assist in defining lift height and the influence of gangue on solution chemistry. A simple spreadsheet is presented that will use the leach operating parameters of SXEW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate to calculate the acid consumption for a proposed operation.A review of current leach operations solution chemistry will help to define acid consumption. This is recommended for all current leach operations.DISCUSSIONThe current practice at Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is the use of column test results to define operating parameters. The monitoring of operational solution chemistry and copper production addresses any changes needed in operational parameters. This practice maximizes the value extracted from each tonne of ore leached."

"Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad are two relatively small porphyry copper-type deposits in Yazd Province in central Iran. They are located within the central Iranian volcano-plutonic belt, formed above the collisional convergent margin of the Iranian lithospheric plate from the late Eocene to the Miocene. This paper discusses the geochemical characteristics of the igneous rocks, and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of plutons and alteration phases associated with the Darreh-Zerreshk and Ali-Abad deposits. The deposits are spatially associated with igneous complexes that consist of older and barren granites intruded by intermediate-composition granitoids, which are the carriers of Cu mineralization. The granites have relatively high content of Nb, Y, and K, a prominent negative Eu anomaly, and were probably derived from melting of, or contamination of mantle-derived magmas by, continental crust. Porphyritic diorites, quartz monzodiorites, and granodiorites show enrichment in light rare earth and large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in middle rare earth elements, and have no negative Eu anomaly. These intermediate-composition granitoids were derived from melting of the upper mantle or lower crust, and their differentiation was controlled partly by fractionation of hornblende. A pilot K/Ar whole-rock dating study suggests that the pre-ore granites were emplaced in the Oligocene. Dating by the 40Ar/39Ar method of nine samples of secondary biotite and sericitized rocks from drillcore within the mineralized and altered zones in both deposits yielded a well-defined age of ca. 16 Ma. This date is interpreted to be the time of hydrothermal alteration and of porphyry copper type mineralization in this part of Iran."

Lithium is an alkali metal found in brine deposits in the United States, Chile and Argentina, as well as in hard rock deposits in Australia and North America. In hard rock deposits, spodumene (LiAl(Si2O6)) is the major economic lithium bearing mineral. Spodumene is typically upgraded through a combination of dense media separation, flotation and magnetic separation. One of the major spodumene concentrate quality specifications is the iron oxide content because it will help determine if the concentrate is considered ceramic grade for use in ceramics and glass or chemical grade for use in lithium ion batteries. The rejection of iron bearing silicate minerals from artificial ore composites (high amphibole and low amphibole, high quartz/feldspar) from a hard-rock spodumene deposit was investigated using magnetic separation and flotation. The efficacy of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) in iron rejection was found to be dependent on the mineralogy of the iron-bearing silicate minerals including modal distribution, liberation and association. When magnetic separation was conducted prior to flotation, the Fe2O3 grade in the final flotation spodumene concentrate was reduced from ~3% to ~1% Fe2O3 , and improved lithium recovery in flotation was observed. It was determined that it was most effective to conduct WHIMS on the flotation feed after scrubbing and de-sliming because this reduced the required magnetic field to recover iron-bearing minerals, likely because slime coating was greatly reduced. Flotation collector screening of four different collectors with varying rosin acid content demonstrated a potential increase in selective flotation of spodumene over some iron silicate minerals with decreasing rosin acid content in the fatty acid collector. However, due to marginal difference in flotation results with the various collectors tested, further testing is required to confirm the observations made and establish a hypothesis regarding the effect of rosin acid content.

Within the last 10 years the metalliferous industry has shown interest in the ability to produce ultrafine particles, as chemical, physio-chemical and physical separation processes have advanced to be able to treat ultrafine metalliferous particles. Also as the primary mineral deposits, around the world are depleted, new more difficult deposits must be mined. Existing operations are also looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies.The traditional approach for gold containing refractory material has been to liberate the locked gold by chemically destroying the pyrite through oxidation. Roasting, pressure oxidation, and bacterial oxidation all employ various degrees of temperature, pressure and catalysis to react the pyrite with oxygen to produce iron oxide and sulfur by-products. However all of these methods are economically impacted due to specific operational added requirements and emissions controls. Pressure and bacterial oxidation have very high capital and operating costs."

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features. "This paper describes some of the methods and equipment used for fine milling of minerals, and gives particular attention to the Vibro Energy system.In addition, the paper describes a specific application in the gold mining industry. This is the 200 tpd plant built by Anglo American Corporation at the President Brand Mine in South Africa in 1985, now a division of Freegold. This plant treats a gold bearing pyrite flotation concentrate which is finely ground to 15 microns prior to cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). l .0 INTRODUCTIONFree milling gold ores are those that yield acceptable dissolution and recovery of the gold following grinding to what can be described as normal fineness, frequently between 50% and 90% passing 74 microns.Increasingly, gold metallurgists are faced with ores that are refractory. The traditiona1 treatment route for refractory gal d ores and concentrates has been by roasting, but for environmental reasons this is becoming less acceptable, or in some areas of the world, totally unacceptable. New methods of treating refractory gold ores are being developed and applied in practice. These new methods include pressure and biological oxidation. Higher gold liberation can also be attained by increasing the fineness of grind, although with conventional systems there are economic limits to this.In flowsheet development and test programs on new deposits, a standard procedure is to establish the relationship between the grind and subsequent go 1 d extraction. The normal situation is that gold extraction increases as the ore, or concentrate, is ground finer. Typically, this relationship is as shown in Fig. l, where the incremental additional extraction is very small once an optimum, or economic, grind has been achieved. This generally app1ies whether the material is free milling or refractory. The limits to grinding are set by the type of equipment which is commonly in use, usually ball mills. These mills have the obvious advantage of high capacity, however, they are increasingly inefficient as finer grinds are required. In general, ball mills are used to reduce ore to some agreed percentage passing 74, or possibly 53 microns."

This year of 1926 marks the 40th. anniversary of nickel mining in Canada. Although the first nickel mine of the Sudbury basin was discovered in 1883, it was not until 1886 that the Canadian Copper Company was organized and actually began to mine copper-nickel ore from the Lady McDonald, Stobie and Evans mines. The intervening years have witnessed some exceedingly interesting nickel history, particularly interesting and gratifying as well to Canadians. Forty years ago, at the inception of Canadian nickel mining, the world's consumption of that metal was about 1000 tons per annum and this was supplied largely from New Caledonia ores refined in France. This nickel was used principally for the production of nickel-silver, coinage alloys, and for nickel-plating. No processes were then known for refining the Sudbury ores nor for the separation of copper from nickel. Consequently, the pioneers in Canadian nickel mining faced the double problem of finding a method of treating their ores, and of finding a market for the nickel when and if they could extract it.

"Analysis of gold placer data from gold placers throughout the world suggests that gold grades and volumes cannot be used to distinguish between most types of gold placers. Only the alluvial plain and fan placers are significantly different among the types of gold placers considered. Gold grades and volumes change when working gold placers go from small-volume methods to large-volume methods. The small-volume methods are either of the surface or subsurface (drift mining) type. The odds that a gold placer will be dominantly worked using small volume methods at the surface are about 5:3. Once small volume mining has occurred, the odds against subsequent large-volume mining are about 4:1. If a placer deposit is suitable for large-volume mining, and the amount of gold produced from small-volume mining was reported, an estimate of the remaining gold (log10kg) can be made using the following equation:The relationship shown by this equation suggests that very large gold placers have over half their total gold content in the rich gravels appropriate for small-volume mining. These relationships in conjunction with other data and computer simulation can be used to estimate placer gold resources for an area targeted for mineral resource assessment. IntroductionGold placers have been an important source of gold throughout man's history and may have been one of the first sources-dating back to around 6000 B.C. (Gregory, 1980). From the primitive basket to the modern floating dredge, a variety of methods have been used to work gold placers. Placers are found in a wide spectrum of geologic and climatic settings. They have been classified by using a mixed set of criteria including age (Recent, Tertiary), climate (desert), fluvial position (modern channel, bench, alluvial fan), environment of deposition (eluvial, alluvial, residual, beach), type of transport (stream, wind, glacier), and whether the placer is buried or at the surface (Boyle, 1979; Wells, 1969). Several mining methods have usually been used to extract gold from anyone placer."

"Une recherche debutee en 1987 tente de cerner divers éléments ayant un impact sur la productivite miniére, de facon à améliorer la planification des operations souterraines. II a été possible de recueillir jusqu'à trente variables dans sept opérations minières differentes du Nord-Ouest québécois. Entre autres, elle montre comment une association entre une analyse de régression multiple et un logiciel d'optimisation (OPTIMUL) peut servir à une application particulière de la planification d'une opération minière du Québec. Plus spécifiquement, la présentation montre comment une quantité appropriée de ANFO et de TOVEX peut maximiser la quantilé de minerai cassé, minimiser les couts de sautage ou encore minimiser les coûts d'explosifs par tonne de roche cassée, en se basant sur une série de contraintes réalistes provenant de la mine.ABSTRACTA study, underway since 1987, tries to evaluate factors affecting mines' productivity. Information has been collected from seven underground mines in Quebec and this paper shows preliminary results from one. In particular, it shows how a combination of multiple regression analysis, mathematical programming and a set of realistic mine constraints can be used for a particular application of mine planning. More specifically, the paper shows a parallel between maximizing production of tons of broken are, minimizing explosives costs or minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are by an appropriate selection of ANFO and TOVEX quantity of explosives. Finally, the paper shows that minimizing the costs of explosives per ton of broken are is the best alternative to follow providing a special optimization program can be set up."

"14.1. INTRODUCTION1The boilerplate of an agreement is not a single provision, but a series of provisions that are expected in “every agreement”. They are sometimes also referred to as the “lawyer’s provisions”. Many businessmen consider the boilerplate to be superfluous and, to some extent, window-dressing by the lawyers – even legalese. They will often offer advice to the effect that it can “pretty well be ignored”. Such advice could not be more wrong.Most boilerplate provisions are essential parts of every agreement. Some may be part of a “standard package” and may have little relevance to the agreement at hand, but these are the exception rather than the rule. The exceptions should not be treated as justification for giving all these provisions short shrift. The boilerplate should receive the same review, consideration, and negotiation as the provisions that set forth the business deal. It is often these provisions that make the deal work or that are turned to at the time of disputes. If they are inadequate, as they sometimes are (unfortunately, some draftsmen are also loath to review or update their standard boilerplate provisions or to tailor them to the deal at hand), they can create problems, rather than offer solutions. Such problems can be costly and time-consuming for the parties to address. Inadequate or incomplete provisions may ultimately be one of the reasons for the parties to turn to the courts to settle their differences. On the other hand, good boilerplate provisions can help keep them out of the courts.One of the principal objectives of an agreement should be to provide procedures, or mechanics, for implementing agreed principles and for the parties to follow to settle their differences, real or perceived, without going to the expense and disruption of a lawsuit. An agreement should aim to keep the parties away from the courts, not serve as a springboard to the courts. It must nevertheless be acknowledged that, if there is a major falling-out among the parties to an agreement, the chances are that, however carefully the provisions of that agreement have been negotiated and drafted, the parties will end up before the courts or some other adjudicating body."

Vale Inco?s Coleman Mine 153 Orebody is a narrow vein deposit with a dip that varies from 30 to 70 degrees. It has a strike length of 1200-feet and the current mining extends from the 4250 level to 5100 level. The primary mining method is mechanized cut-and-fill although drift-and-fill is also used in wider sections of the ore zone. The ore body is divided into six main mining horizons with an average of three mining blocks on each cut. There are some interesting rock mechanics challenges related to mining upward from the 4550 level and these challenges are increasing as the mining front progresses toward the 4400 level. The mining of the 4550 block is currently at cut 13 whereby the crown pillar thickness is approximately 60-feet. Significant factors including increased stress levels in the crown pillar, the change in the orebody dip at this level and a recently indentified geological structure in the footwall, have all combined to introduce seismic activity in the footwall of 4550 level. Closer studies revealed a consistent trend of seismicity that was further examined with core logging and Acoustic TeleViewer technology. The data from these assessment tools disclosed a geological structure that is influencing the mining environment. This paper reviews the seismic analysis for the 4550 level mining zone and the subsequent procedures used to locate the new geological structure. The paper also discusses the key mining practices used to successfully mine cut 13 of 4550 level and briefly reviews the studies that are underway to up-date the mine design for continued extraction of high-grade ore in a safe and productive manner.

"In the mineral processing industries, there is an increasing need to design thickeners which are able to produce high density underflows usually referred to as “paste”.The behaviour of a flocculated suspension in compression needs to be well understood in order to arrive at a reliable thickener tank configuration (i.e. diameter, cone angle and depth) for a required paste result.As a suspension approaches paste consistency, it’s fluid characteristics change markedly. It develops a high yield stress, and may have an increased tendency to form agglomerates, which lead to a phenomenon known as “rotating beds”, “donuts”, or “islands”. These characteristics present challenges to the designer of the rake mechanism.The subject paper addresses the requirements for designing a paste thickener, covering the following topics:o Testwork for thickener sizingo Design of rake mechanismso Suspension rheology and effect on designo Case studiesTESTWORK AND SIZING FOR PASTE THICKENERSThickening slurries to the maximum possible density (paste) is becoming increasingly common. Applications such as Autoclave feed thickeners, paste backfill and some counter current washing (CCD) circuits are all examples of potential paste thickening applications. The principle of paste thickeners is that the compression zone is much deeper than on either high rate (HRT) or high compression (HCT) units; generally 3 metres or more. As the compression zone gets deeper, theunderflow density for a given flux rate (tph/m2) increases, as a result of two factors:1. Longer bed settling time. Settling flocs move relative to one another and release interstitial fluid when they are in compression. Increasing bed residence time achieves higher density underflow as more fluid is removed.2. The nett weight of the bed creates a compressive force on the settling flocs. This force increases with depth, so that the flocs at the bottom of the bed experience the highest compressive force. This represents the driving force to expel interstitial fluid and hence increase bed density."

Silver and cupric ions have been proven to play the roles of catalysts to promote the oxidation kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid solution. In this study, the interaction between silver ions and cupric ions during ferric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution has been investigated. The electrochemical study by Tafel analysis showed a significant boost of dissolution rate for chalcopyrite dissolution in Fe3+- Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution after Ag+ was added in the solution. For 10 ppm Ag addition, the dissolution rate of chalcopyrite increased to 7.94 ×10-6 A/cm2 from 3.2 ×10-7 A/cm2, when Ag+ was absent. On the other hand, the effect of Cu2+ on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in Fe3+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solution was not obvious from electrochemical measurements. The chalcopyrite leaching tests in different acid solutions showed that silver addition had an obvious catalytic effect on promoting chalcopyrite dissolution. Comparing the leaching rates of chalcopyrite leached in Fe3+ containing, Fe3+-Ag+ containing, Fe3+-Cu2+ containing and Fe3+-Cu2+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solutions, it was found in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution, the leaching rate was highest among all the aqueous acid systems. Further leaching tests suggested that with increase of the Ag+ concentration from 0 to 20 ppm, the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution also increased and reached 57.62% with 20 ppm Ag+ addition after 24 h. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most important copper mineral in copper hydrometallurgy and it accounts for nearly 80% of the universal copper resource (Olvera, Rebolledo, Mora, Dixon, & Asselin, 2018). The hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite has been intensively studied with emphasis on solving the slow dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid environment. A variety of aqueous systems, such as sulfate (Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima, & Tsunekawa, 2001), chlorides (Liu, Chen, & Yang, 2017), and ammonia (Hua et al., 2018) have been studied to improve copper leaching. From another perspective, chalcopyrite leaching studies have indicated that the mechanism of chalcopyrite dissolution in acid solution is essentially electrochemical (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). Therefore, extensive studies have recently been carried out to explain the dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in different media by various electrochemical techniques.

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.

Ground instability is among the major causes of serious incidents and production disruptions in the mining industry and has a significant impact on safety. Mining companies may have operations in a number of jurisdictions with varied regulatory requirements for ground control management. As these companies expand into countries where mining regulations are formative or lacking clear definition, ground control practices are usually developed by local mine personnel based on their experience. In many cases, inconsistent procedures and standards are generated, which can lead to an increase in occurrence of underground incidents due to difficulties and confusion in implementation. This situation has forced some mining companies to standardize their ground control practices by geographic regions or divisions. Though this approach is an improvement, it may not lead to effective management of ground control issues across all operations of a global mining company. Barrick Gold Corporation, with operations in North and South America, Australia and Africa, decided to adopt a global approach to ground control management. This global approach requires all Barrick operations to prepare and implement an effective ground control management plan (GCMP) based on site specific conditions and company guidelines. It is also required that the GCMP be developed through application of sound geotechnical engineering practices and be consistent with local regulatory requirements and Barrick safety policies. All Barrick underground operations have GCMPs in place, and its surface operations are now involved in the initiative. This paper presents Barrick?s global approach to underground mine ground control management and outlines the content and process for the development of a GCMP.

"The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt.
