The primary steel industry of the Prairie Provinces consists essentially of three companies whose total annual melting capacity, as of January 1, 1963, was 333,000 net tons. These companies have steel rolling facilities. In addition, there are five other companies producing steel castings by melting scrap in electric furnaces which, with the plants having rolling facilities, gives a total annual furnace melting capacity of 380,000 tons. Since 1954, the annual production of steel ingots and castings has ranged from a low of 66,588 tons, in 1954, to a high of 211,138 tons in 1961. The present facilities on the Prairies for making steel ingots from scrap, and rolling them to produce light merchant mill products, appear to be sufficient for many years ahead. Steel scrap, as electric furnace feed to make steel ingots for the present line of products, will probably continue to be available at reasonable prices either on the Prairies or from the north-central United States. It is recognized, however, that residual elements in scrap may be-come of greater significance and necessitate more rigid control of scrap quality.

"THE LORNEX MINING PROJECT is one of several large-tonnage, low-grade operations recently placed in operation in British Columbia. It is located in the Highland Valley in the south central portion of the province. This area is described as a divide valley at an elevation range of 4,000 to 6,000 feet and is situated on the divide between two drainage systems. The major drainage to the west flows into the Thompson River and to the east and south the drainage enters the Nicola River system. This open-ended valley lies between low, rounded mountains in fairly heavily-wooded country. Prior to the commencement of copper mining activities, the first by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. over ten years ago, the valley was only sparsely settled. A few small ranches were in existence on the several Indian Reserves located along the valley bottomland. There has also been a small amount of logging activity in the valley, although much of the area is covered by dense lodgepole pine which has little or no value to the loggers. As the mining interest mounted with further discoveries of the disseminated copper ore typical of the district, much of the valley was covered with mineral claims and exploration drilling was carried on by several companies at various times. At the time Lornex was preparing to commence major construction work in early 1970, there was very little activity of any kind in the Highland Valley outside of the Bethlehem operation and a small amount of ranching."

"Within the continuous scenario of reduced aluminium price and plants production costs increase, the energy consumption optimization in the aluminum electrolytic pots continues as the main focus for the producers. Energy consumption was chosen as a key performance indicator to drive the efforts and actions for improvements. Alcoa improved the energy consumption by approximately 3% from 2005 to 2015. This improvement was a result of best practices implementation, new technologies introduction, strategic actions with plant curtailments and management practices. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of the management practices for planning and operational improvements beyond the technology changes. About 10 years ago, Alcoa reorganized its approach to retain knowledge in the Smelters by using a Best Practices format. For each specific subject, a skilled team defined the minimum requirements and the Best Practices for several aspects of operation and maintenance, which affect the environment, safety, cost, customers and performance. These Best Practices were deployed to all Smelters combined with training sessions to process and operation professionals. We will describe how the Best Practices were organized, the deployment strategy used, and the approach to measure the plants’ success. We will describe the management approach that includes Manufacturing Analyses focused on 3-year potential, annual planning, and weekly monitoring of plant stability. A manufacturing analysis is organized at select plants with cross-functional participation of specialists from technical, operational, procurement and finance. The output of a manufacturing analysis includes a roadmap of enablers to improve energy efficiency. A quarterly follow-up of enabler deployment is held with the plant and resources that participated in the analysis. Annually, there is a Planning Process where energy consumption enablers are selected to be implemented during the next 3 years for each plant. A monthly critical analysis is made by the plants with regional best practice support. On a weekly basis, key performance indicators are reviewed with determination of a stability index for each plant. Any deviation signal of unstable condition is alerted and supporting resources are diverted to the plant to reverse trend with countermeasures.INTRODUCTIONDue to factors like excess aluminum in the market and lower consumption in China, the LME price is declining along the last years, as showed in Figure 1. In 2011, the price peaked at US$ 2,400/ton and since then, continues to trend down and approaching the lowest level at US$ 1,500/ton in the last 5 years."

In the last five years, new iron ore pellet plants have been built with significantly reduced air pollution levels compared to the older generation of plants. European and American pollution controls are more stringent that in China and Brazil. The recent American plants have successfully employed circulating fluidized beds for sulfur control, baghouses for particulate control, activated carbon injection for mercury and a new design of specialized low-NOx burners.

This paper provides a brief overview of evolution of deformations, stresses, and pore pressures due to different excavation stages during construction of an URL. Excavation of a rockmass develops a damage zone of finite width around the excavated zone which is associated with changes in permeability and which affects the fluid flow mechanism. In this study, a coupled hydromechanical (HM) analysis has been conducted for a water saturated porous rock mass which has been created by sequential excavation and backfill of vertical disposal pit of an URL. For this purpose, an Atomic Energy of Canada Limited?s in-floor concept for a deep geologic repository suitable for Indian conditions has been used. Changes in rock deformations, stresses, strains and mechanically induced pore pressure in an undrained condition, during excavation, as well as those caused by mechanically induced rock deformations after backfill of the disposal pit, have been modeled. A three-dimensional finite difference tool FLAC3D has been used for the analysis.

In his April 10, 1978 budget address, Finance Minister Chretien declared that the federal government will restrict the growth of its spending to less than the trend growth of the gross national product; over the past year, both the federal and a number of provincial governments have taken action to cut back on spending policies. This new emphasis in restraint would seem 10 be a response to a mounting public reaction to the rapid growth of government spending - and taxation - over the past 25 years. Although this relatively new government posture on public spending may be admired by many, to others it raises the question: "Can the growth in government spending really be stopped?" This article comments on just how government revenues - and spending - have grown over the past few years in Canada, and mentions some of the issues relating to a slowdown in that growth.

Fracture mechanics based techniques are used to gain insight into the phenomenon of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and to develop guidance for avoiding or controlling SCC. From constant extension rate experiments under rising load or rising displacement conditions the susceptibility of high strength steels, aluminum, magnesium and titanium alloys to SCC and hydrogen embrittlement can be assessed. Such tests on pre-cracked specimens are also well suited for studying the mechanisms leading to SCC by employing appropriate models for the degradation of metallic materials which take into account the uptake of atomic hydrogen from the corrosive environment. Measurements of crack growth resistance curves using the crack tip opening displacement as fracture parameter can be compared with simulated R-curves obtained from modeling of the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement. The materials investigated are a high strength steel and a magnesium alloy both exposed to environmental conditions which fostered the uptake of hydrogen.

"Selection of an optimal bit is a critical issue in drilling engineering. Specific energy (SE) and Cost per Foot (CPF) are the most common methods for evaluation of bit efficiency and optimal bit selection. The major shortfall of both methods is that they do not directly account for geological and geomechanical parameters of formations being drilling. In this paper, results of using the two foregoing methods are compared using Formation Drillability (FD) method, which directly accounts for geological and geomechanical parameters of a formation. This method combines various geological and geomechanical parameters and yields a dimensionless parameter indicating the formation drilling hardness (drillability). Results of this study show that the amount of energy, cost and time spent for drilling a unit volume / length of an identical formation may vary in different wells. This is due to the fact that geological and geomechanical characteristics of a formation may vary among wells and even within short intervals of a single well. Therefore, an optimal bit may not be appropriately selected, if drilling and economical parameters are the only factors considered and the formation geological and geomechanical specifications are ignored.INTRODUCTIONMany authors such as Bilgesu, Al-Rashidi, Aminian, and Ameri (2000) and Clegg (2006) conducted research in the evaluation of bit performance and optimum bit selection. Almost all of them tried to establish a good relationship based on geomechanical parameters. Primary examples are the research done by Ubaldi (1999), Macini, Magagni, Da Dalt, and Valente (2007)."

ABSTRACT With the gold industry processing more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more critical. This paper compares the two commonly employed ‘free’ cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric endpoint silver nitrate titration) with the rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods common at site laboratories. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared using these measurement techniques.

"Pilot plants for pressure hydrometallurgy represent special design and project execution challenges. Over the past twenty years, Zeton has designed and fabricated a variety of world-class pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities for the nickel industry, and this paper discusses design considerations and strategies related to such projects. Project execution methods are also discussed, and guidance is given for the selection of materials of construction and for the selection of appropriate pressure and temperature design points for pressure hydrometallurgical pilot equipment. The paper concludes with a discussion of the need for process similarity with future commercial operations and the realities of pilot-scale equipment.INTRODUCTION The process technology developer or owner and the designer/fabricator of a new pilot-plant facility are faced with some difficult technical choices even after the decision to build a dedicated plant has been taken. A pilot-plant project is usually on the critical path of a large commercial project involving investments many multiples greater than the capital cost of the pilot plant. Schedule savings in the design, manufacture, and commissioning of the pilot plant or in a rapid completion of the experimental program can be disproportionately beneficial to the overall development project. However, inappropriate shortcuts resulting in major oversights can be disproportionately problematic. A number of considerations and suggestions for both the project execution approach and the process engineering design of pressure hydrometallurgical pilot-plant facilities are presented as a guide for potential owners and operators of new pilot-plant equipment and facilities. These suggestions are particularly applicable to the nickel industry, where the majority of our firm’s prior hydrometallurgical experience was obtained. This paper is an update to an earlier publication (Martin, 2004), offering an opportunity for a new generation of metallurgists and engineers to learn the specialist requirements of pilot- and demonstration-scale plant design, which are key functions in the development and commercialization of new processes."

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

Large-scale hydraulic fracturing technique has been widely applied to the development of shale gas reservoirs, where the interaction between natural fractures and critical fracture zones has substantial impact on the propagation of hydraulic fractures. Therefore, it is of significant importance to understand and experimentally verify such mechanism. To reach this end, tri-axial fracturing tests were implemented on 400mm×400mm×400mm block samples collected from Longmaxi shale outcrops. The interplay between hydraulic and natural fractures was investigated during the tests, factoring in the role of pump rate in affecting the created fracture network. Based on the experimental results, the critical fracture zone, defined as the weak formation zone nearby the wellbore created by staged pressure implementation that is observed rapid fracture propagation upon next stage of pressure increase, was thoroughly investigated. The analysis illustrates that given the high brittleness of the shale formation, abundant critical fracture zones are generated around natural fractures with pressure building up at a relatively low pump rate. As the pump rate increases, hydraulic fractures initiate and come into play with critical fracture zones, implying emergence of a large number of micro-cracks. A changing pump rate modifies the way of interaction between hydraulic and natural fractures and the subsequent formation of fracture network. Long term fracturing fluid injection with relatively low pump rate below the activation of critical zones is suggested. Also proposed is appropriate timing when applying a specific pump rate that will contribute to the improvement of hydraulic fracture propagation.

The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-1990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.

"In refractory gold concentrates, gold is occluded in sulphide minerals preventing efficient cyanide leaching. Hence, roasting is used to oxidize sulphur and organic carbon, the latter being necessary to minimize recovery loss through the preg-robbing effect. In 2009, Outotec commissioned the circulating fluidized bed roaster at Syama gold mine in Mali. Since 2013 Resolute and Outotec have been implementing improvements to the roaster performance with the capacity increasing from 8000 t/month in 2013 to above 13,000 t/month in 2016, while achieving a residual sulphide sulphur and organic carbon contents of below 0.1 wt.% and 0.4 wt.%, respectively. Thus a gold recovery in the CIL of above 90% is attained. In 2016, Outotec audited the Syama roaster. The analysis resulted in the Low Carbon Roaster (LCR) upgrade concept which (i) allows re-processing of calcine dust from the spray cooler and ESP after pelletization and (ii) allows the roasting of a further fine-organic carbon rich feed, i.e. de-slime circuit tailings. The LCR upgrade aims to reduce organic carbon to <0.2 wt.% and increase roaster-leaching gold recovery by >3%. Project development included extensive testwork. The LCR process is expected to become operational during FY 2019.INTRODUCTION Double refractory sulphide ores exhibit the characteristics of gold locked within pyrite grains, in the presence of preg-robbing natural (organic) carbon. Hence, to achieve high recovery during subsequent processing steps, i.e. cyanide leaching, oxidation of sulphide sulphur is required, producing a porous calcine by way of a roasting step. This allows for the gold contained within the pyrite grains to be accessible during cyanide leaching. Furthermore, it is necessary to oxidize the organic carbon. Oxidizing the organic carbon is essential as gold recovery loss occurs as a result of gold-cyanide complexes being adsorbed on organic carbon, this phenomenon is termed as preg-robbing (Miller et al., 2016). The gold absorbed on the organic carbon is lost, reporting to the tailings stream. Hence, the aforementioned oxidation of sulphide sulphur and organic carbon is the process goal. Nonetheless, the latter must occur at a controlled temperature which is concentrate/ ore specific, since the pores of the produced calcine should not sinter, as this makes the gold contained in the calcine less accessible during leaching, leading to gold recovery loss. The tight temperature control requirement is a decisive factor in the choice of a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) as the roasting reactor, due to the excellent mixing characteristics of the CFB which results in temperature homogeneity of (+/-10°C). Roasting of double refractory ores, as described above, can be included in the flowsheet after comminution and grinding, a process termed as whole ore roasting, or by including a flotation circuit termed as concentrate roasting. Roasting the flotation concentrate results in less solid flow, increased sulphide sulphur grade and organic carbon content resulting in a higher heating value and higher gold content. A typical composition of the Syama ore and concentrate is given in Table 1. Ore average values presented correspond to the period 2015, while concentrate values are typical for the flotation performance throughout the period 2012–2015."

The insecure rock may be a weak beam or loose from arching or from sloughing. The material is strengthened and held in place before damage can result.Little is known of the limitations of rock bolting; to date, work has been carried on by trial-and-error, with large safety factors being used. Rock bolts have been principally used for roof support. Bolting offers a new field of support to the mining industry: it now has a permanent position as a ground control method.HistoryRock bolting is a relatively new means of support, its exact origin being unknown.Bolting has been in use at the St. Joseph Lead Company's property in Southeastern Missouri for the past twenty-six years, the first attempts having been hit-or-miss trials before a systematic attack was made. Many instances of occasional use of rock bolts have come to light .in widely separated mining camps, .some dating back forty years.The first installations were made as supplements to wooden timbering where space was restricted. Four methods of measuring mineral abundance in a rock are examined for their potential in assaying for high-tech industrial minerals. One method uses X-ray powder-diffraction data and the other three rely on whole rock chemical data and information on mineral assemblages and mineral compositions. All four methods were employed to estimate wollastonite content in diamond drill core of skarn collected as part of an exploration program and are compared to visual estimates of wollastonite content from core logs. These techniques for assaying wollastonite span a considerable range ofaccuracy and expense, and combined, define a non-linear relationship between these variables. Accuracy increases rapidly relative lo expense up to total costs of about $50 per analysis. Assay methods in the $50-100 per analysis range have associated errors of 5-10% relative and probably suffice for most exploration programs. Improvements in accuracy above this level require a much larger investment. The most expensive assay technique (-$300 per analysis) yields the most accurate measurement of grade (relative error -1%). Its application may best be limited to periodic checks on other assay techniques and for fine-tuning ofmineral separation procedures.

The friendly and efficient co-operation of the officials of the Bureau. is the foundation upon which it has been my privilege to rely in the preparation of this and two earlier papers ( 1). My thanks are due also to our own staff on the Dominion Coal Board, who spared neither time nor effort in helping to prepare this paper.STATISTICS are comparatively dull and, to many people, coal statistics are duller than most. Coal is, however, the one basic mineral upon which our whole way of life depends and it may be well if attention is drawn to this fact by an occasional statistical review of the coal position in Canada. The recent furore over the oil and gas discoveries has so obscured the basic position of coal in many minds that a little basic coal information may be useful. It is for this reason that, for the third successive year, a factual survey of the coal position is being presented.In the previous papers (1) explanations have been given of the basic considerations in the preparation of these reports and some special phases of the overall picture have been examined. "Teck and Aurubis are working together to commercialize a technology for the processing of copper arsenic sulphide concentrates that is economic and sustainable with regards to the environment and community. The pressure hydrometallurgical approach is a desirable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. A test work program was carried out where a range of copper concentrates with varying arsenic grades was processed under CESL leach conditions. This paper discusses the stability character (in terms of arsenic) of the resulting residues and their mineralogy. The basic ferric arsenate sulphate phase (BFAS; otherwise known as type 2) was identified as the main arsenic carrier. All CESL residues demonstrated high stability (<1 mg/L As) through a range of aggressive (pH and ORP) environmental leach conditions.INTRODUCTIONArsenic deportment and control in the copper industry needs an integrated approach involving each stage of the value chain, i.e. exploration, mine operation, refining process and mine closure. Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Canada’s largest diversified mining company and Aurubis, Europe’s largest copper producer, have formed a partnership to advance the application of CESL copper-gold technology for the development of high arsenic bearing copper resources (Bruce et al., 2011).Among the options for arsenic control in the metallurgical treatment of copper concentrates is the precipitation of ferric arsenate, which is widely accepted as the most suitable method for stabilizing arsenic (Ferron and Wang, 2003). The pressure hydrometallurgical approach to processing arsenic bearing copper concentrates is a favorable option as mineral extraction and arsenic fixation can take place in a single autoclave vessel. Under CESL pressure leaching conditions (150 °C, 1380 kPa) high copper extraction and arsenic (V) fixation is possible.Within the pressure leach autoclave, arsenate and ferric iron react to form scorodite type phases. The precipitate formed under CESL conditions is dependent on the Fe (III) /As (V) ratio and the tenor of cations and anions, particularly excess sulphate (Gomez et al., 2011a). Previous studies on CESL residues have found arsenic to be present as crystalline scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O) (Bruce et al., 2011), basic ferric arsenate sulphate (BFAS: Fe(AsO4)1-x(SO4)x(OH)x·(1-x)H2O, where 0.3<x<0.7), and/or arsenate adsorbed on to hematite (Gomez et al. 2011b). Although not a focus of previous work, scorodite was the predominant precipitate formed when the concentrate Fe/As was <1.5 (Mayhew et al., 2010), and BFAS was the predominant precipitate when the concentrate Fe/As was >10 (Gomez et al. 2011b)."

Located in North West Tanzania, Buzwagi is an underground narrow-vein gold mine owned by Barrick Gold. The plant was commissioned in 2000. The reserves are estimated to be more than 25 years. The ore, containing gold, silver and copper mineralization in sulphides, is processed at 3,300 tpd. This paper presents the results of an investigation to determine the performance of an ammonia-cyanide leaching approach to recover gold from two samples. Coarse gold was recovered by gravity prior to leaching. The gravity tailings had the following composition; 1.97 g/t Au and 0.31% copper for the medium cyanide soluble copper (MCSC) sample and 2.80 g/t Au and 0.53% Cu for the high cyanide soluble copper (HCSC) sample. Experiments were conducted for 72 hours in stirred tank reactors with monitoring and control of parameters. The straight cyanidation produced gold extractions of 76.1% for the MCSC sample and 84.6% for the HCSC sample. Associated cyanide additions were 6.1 kg/t and 11.5 kg/t respectively. The gold extraction of the MCSC sample was improved to 88.8% using 350 ppm NaCN and 700 ppm ammonia. The associated cyanide and ammonia additions were 2.5 kg/t and 1.7 kg/t respectively. For the HCSC sample, 82.5% gold extraction was obtained using 500 ppm NaCN and 600 ppm ammonia. The cyanide addition and ammonia additions were reduced to 3.8 kg/t and 1.0 kg/t respectively. No significant decrease in gold extraction was noticed when the cyanide and ammonia were reduced to 150 ppm and 500 ppm respectively. In the presence of ammonia, a significant amount of cyanide was oxidized to cyanate by the cupric ion. In the absence of ammonia, the formation of copper cyanide was the predominant reaction responsible for consumption of cyanide.

THE 1938 season was marked by a distinct lull in exploratory activity in the Province of Quebec. Quebec was not unique in this respect, but the condition appears to have been more acute here than in most other parts of the Dominion. Various causes may be suggested to account for this. The general disturbance in political and economic conditions throughout the world has certainly had an adverse influence. Uncertainty induced by changes in the mining laws of Quebec in 1937 contributed. A third cause was the belief, now held by many, that the easily accessible deposits in the main producing belt extending eastward from. the Rouyn district have now all been found and that new discoveries in this field will henceforth come more slowly and more expensively. A fourth is the lack of conspicuous success by companies and individuals who have interested themselves in less accessible areas to the north, notably the Chibougamau district. A fifth, the unattractive appearance, as viewed on published geological maps, of the vast area extending northward to Ungava bay and Hudson strait. A sixth, the attraction of such speculative funds as were available to the Northwest Territories, where spectacular finds were reported in the fall of 1937. Whatever may be the relative importance of these causes, languor in exploration will ultimately be reflected in production returns. This appears, therefore, to be an opportune time to take stock of the general position of the Industry in the Province and to consider ways and means of counter-acting those conditions which are now impeding, or will in the near future impede, its expansion.
