The resource estimation process for the underground Mount Isa Copper Mine has undergone significant change. Block models are now created using a commercial software package as opposed to the in-house software that was previously used. With mineralisation occurring over a strike length of more than 4 km, Mineral Resources for all categories totalled 190 Mt at 2.7 per cent Cu at 31 December 2002. Estimation is by ordinary kriging with two separate models generated to cover the X41 and Enterprise orebodies respectively. The underlying Upper Basement Contact and the silica-dolomite alteration envelope are both used as hard boundaries to constrain the modelling. From a validated block model, grade shells are generated at the appropriate cut-off grade for a given area. The grade shells are depleted for mined voids and subdivided into 30 metre strike length blocks. Application of a SMU criteria and crown and pillar constraints results in failed blocks being culled from the resource inventory. Mineral Resource blocks are further subdivided into resource categories (Measured, Indicated, Inferred) by the Competent Person on the basis of geological confidence, taking account of geological and grade continuity, drillhole spacing and structural complexity (JORC, 1999). A geostatistical æconfidenceÆ category is incorporated into the block model as an additional tool for the categorisation process. The shapes are assessed in concert with a mining engineer to determine whether a reasonable expectation of mining potential exists and if not they are removed from the resource. The final categorised blocks constitute the Mineral Resource inventory and form the basis for conversion to Ore Reserves. The resultant Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are reported on an æinclusive ofÆ basis.

The recent trend of installing flotation cells with volumes as large as 200 m3 in concentrators is driven mainly by economic considerations such as lower capital, operating and maintenance costs. Despite the economic advantages, the metallurgical benefits from these large cells have not yet been fully realised by the industry. This is mainly due to the lack of understanding of cell operation, viz cell mixing and hydrodynamics, gas dispersion and froth transportation behaviour in large cells. There is still no rational basis for selecting optimum cell operating conditions and down-the-bank operating profiles. The relationship between cell operating conditions and metallurgy is not well established. This has resulted in poor utilisation of cell capacity in many operations. The present trend of installation of fewer cells in a bank requires each cell to be operated very efficiently. Optimisation of cell operation provides an opportunity for significant metallurgical improvements in a flotation circuit with minimal capital expenditure. Extensive work on optimising of cell performance has been carried out at various Teck Cominco operations in Canada, Peru and USA. Three different levels were involved in this work. The first level was aimed at identification of cell operating conditions for optimum mixing and hydrodynamics, gas dispersion, entrainment and froth flow behaviour in individual cells. The objective of the second level was to identify the optimum bank operating profile for cells down the bank in a circuit. The third level then focused on controlling these cell operating conditions and bank operating profiles for tighter control of concentrate grade and recovery for optimum bank metallurgy. This paper presents some of the major findings at all three levels and demonstrates the importance of each level in optimising the performance of flotation banks installed with large cells.

Traditionally X-ray diffraction (XRD) has not been significantly used by the cultural heritage sector, as the most commonly used technique, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), requires sample removal from the artwork or artefact, followed by grinding of the sample to a fine powder. With the development of micro-X-ray diffraction (micro-XRD) and other associated advances, non-destructive, in situ analysis of crystalline pigments on micro-areas of paintings and artefacts has become possible. This is illustrated with the application of this technique to the in situ analysis of propriety paints, paint cross-sections and small paintings. However, workers have noted that XRD can be insufficiently sensitive with pigment mixtures, due to matrix effects. This study obtained X-ray diffractograms of 17 single pigment preparations and determined relative amounts of crystalline content. The purity of single pigments was compared with Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) database diffractograms. The impact of pigments with high X-ray absorption coefficients on the detection limits of pigments with low X-ray absorption coefficients was further investigated by building on work done with the chromium oxide-zinc oxide series with the preparation of a second series of binary mixtures of zinc oxide (which has a high absorption coefficient and is almost fully crystalline) and ultramarine blue, which has a lower absorption coefficient but which is more crystalline. Semi-quantitative analysis, where baseline and absorption factor corrections are made, confirm detection limits as low as five per cent for chromium oxide and ultramarine blue when in a binary matrix with zinc oxide. However, this type of analysis is very time consuming. So in order to theoretically simulate issues that will be encountered with binary pigment mixtures, the single phase diffractograms were used to theoretically investigate the matrix effects of the three white pigments with the various coloured pigments. This illustrated that detection limits can be as low as five per cent or in non-ideal conditions, such as with partial peak clashes or where there are large differences in relative peak intensity, as high as 50 per cent. These results have significant implications for the analysis of painted surfaces on artworks or artefacts. It has been demonstrated that ideally this method is more suited to the investigation of surfaces where there is minimal mixing of pigments or where there is not a significant difference between the absorption coefficients of the mixed pigments.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and open stopes of greatly varying sizes. The condition of the stope crowns and remnants is often unknown, and ultimately these structures become a significant proportion of the production floor and pit walls. Significant seismic events and occasionally rock bursts often occur in the underground workings. Seismicity is becoming an issue to the viability of the KCGM Fimiston operations. KCGM needs to take a leading role in understanding mine-induced and regional seismicity. The seismic system trials were initiated in the Fimiston Open Pit in 1996 using the ISS system. The initial system included two triaxial geophone arrays and two triaxial accelerometer arrays installed into two boreholes. The main objectives of the trial were to investigate the suitability of the two types of sensors and the detectability of seismicity in the pit. The trial was regarded as a success and the system has been expanded and improved. The current system consists of 12 triaxial geophone and accelerometer arrays and nine uniaxial geophones. The 12 triaxial arrays are installed in nine boreholes drilled from the pit and the nine uniaxial geophones are installed from underground level workings about 660 m below the original surface elevation. The system is designed to provide seismicity coverage for the entire pit area that is about 2.7 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and about 300 metres deep. The accuracy of the source location has always been a challenge due to the existence of the dense concentration of stopes and lack of the sensors. It is uncommon to have direct ray path for the seismic waves to propagate to the sensors across the strike, hence sensors have been located along strike and under the old workings. This paper discusses some of the challenges associated with seismic monitoring near mine remnants and seismically active faults. The results of the seismic monitoring are presented, and contrasted to results of three dimensional boundary element numerical modelling. The impact of the seismicity upon pit slope stability is briefly discussed.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

The cohesive zone has a significant influence on blast furnace operation and performance. The high-temperature behaviour of the reducing ferrous burden determines the properties of the cohesive zone and is studied in a laboratory using a softening and melting test. This paper summarises recent work aimed at better understanding the physico-chemical changes in a ferrous bed during softening and melting. Using a combination of standard, non-standard and quenched tests supported by optical image analysis, this work has highlighted some important differences in behaviour between lump, pellets and sinter as well as between the two lump ores and two acid pellets. As with the two lump ores, one pellet is denser than the other and the denser ore/pellet is also higher in silica.Within the cohesive zone, densification of the ferrous layer leads to reduced permeability and greater pressure drop. From the work presented in this paper, two key mechanisms of ferrous layer densification were identified. Firstly, the formation of fayalite, which melts at low temperatures, can act as a lubricant between particles and lead to densification of the ferrous layer under load. Secondly, reduction to metallic iron is topochemical and fayalite in the outer shell of the particle restricts gas flow to the centre and results in the formation of a wustite core. As temperatures rise, the wustite melts and eventually exudes out of the shell, occupying void spaces between particles and further reducing layer voidage and permeability.This work has shown that density and silica content are two key factors that result in increased densification of the ferrous layer. For porous Australian lump ore, the higher porosity and lower silica reduces the formation of fayalite and limits the formation of the wustite core, ultimately leading to a more permeable bed. The difference between the porous and dense ores was more pronounced with the introduction of prereduction to better simulate blast furnace conditions. This suggests that a porous ore gives significantly better cohesive zone permeability and blast furnace operations than a dense ore.The behaviour of fluxed sinter particles is different in that the silica reacts with lime to form dicalcium silicate. Minimal wustite core forms because relict hematite particles in sinter are only small and reduction occurs uniformly throughout the particle. Even with significant loss of material through prereduction, beds formed from sinter remained comparatively rigid. Studies using a typical blast furnace burden mix of 80 per cent fluxed sinter and 20 per cent porous ore showed that the structures of these beds at softening and melting temperatures are very similar to the sinter-only test. Measurements of bed contraction and pressure drop also confirmed that the introduction of 20 per cent porous ore into a sinter bed did not alter its properties. This is an indication that 20 per cent ore can be easily accommodated by blast furnace burdens.CITATION:Loo, C E, 2015. Geology is generally treated as a æfront endÆ step in mine development. After infill drilling, the majority of resource estimation, mine-planning, development, mineral processing strategies and operational procedures are planned and implemented with little geological input, particularly in open pit operations. However, significant benefits in overall costs, cash flow, and technical risk reduction can be realised when sound geology is utilised more rigorously throughout the mining process. This under-utilisation of geology in the mining process has arisen due to a combination of factors:A lack of interest in, or knowledge of the full mining process by geologists. Few geologists fully understand where their inputs make critical impacts on downstream users. As a result of this, geologists generally do not focus their inputs towards areas of greatest value added, ie addressing issues critical for other members of the mining team. Most importantly, few geologists effectively communicate their results to the downstream users of their geology models. The results are that the potential benefits of geology, and the appropriate status of geology in the mining industry, are not fully realised. It is fundamental to realise exactly what geologists do. Geologists constrain geological processes and geometry. All geoscientific tools at the geologistsÆ disposal are geared towards one of these goals. An emphasis on geological processes is present throughout the exploration process, whereas in the resource estimation and mine development process an emphasis on geometry is required. The mining process is a web of disciplines that are attempting to optimise development of a resource to provide value to shareholders. Yet few people within these disciplines have a full appreciation of this web, and where sound geology inputs can add value through various feedback loops. Geology inputs do not end at the resource estimation stage, nor are they relegated to grade control implementation. If geologists have an appreciation of the mining process and close liaison with the other disciplines such as geostatistics, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, and mining engineering, they can significantly benefit project costs, timelines, and constrain technical risk by addressing their issues at the earliest possible stage. Furthermore, the mining process is not a single pass timeline, but an iterative process where the exploration, resource definition, mine planning and mining loop is continually repeated over the life of a project. Therefore, the potential inputs of geology are critical throughout the mining process. Effective communication of the impacts of geology inputs on downstream users is often lacking on mining projects. The most effective way to communicate geological results is through where it impacts most û project risk. Focussing all geology inputs and communication in terms of potential material risk allows the geologist to be more effective in contributing value to the mining process, and allows the downstream users of geology inputs to better constrain the risks associated with their aspects of the mining project. Through a program of geologists:taking an interest in the entire mining process and identifying critical areas for geology inputs to downstream users (the geologistsÆ clients); focussing geology inputs to address the potentially material issues on mining projects; and communicating their inputs to the æclientsÆ in terms of technical risk, geology will be much better integrated into the mining process. As a result, the potential benefits of geology throughout the mining process will be realised, and the status of geologists within the mining process will be elevated to a more pivotal position.

The case for regular audits of mining operations to establish performance trends is advanced. Analysis of performance data using the parameters of the capacity equation used in conjunction with learning curves is described. The extrapolation of learning curves in performance target setting, operating and capital cost budgeting is advocated.

During the course of an investigation into the fundamental chemistry of the cyanide process, it became evident that the usual method of determining protective alkalinity was not completely satisfactory. T.he routine method for the determination of protective alkali by first removing free cyanide by the addition of silver nitrate, followed by titration of alkali with dilute acid using. phenolphthalein as indicator, can be shown to give correct results only when the alkali is a strong base. For other sUbstances, the alkali so determined is not the protective alkali. In view of the complications associated with the presence of zinc in cyanide solutions the discussion will be restricted in the first place to solutions free from zinc. Until the chemistry of simple cyanide solutions is placed on a quantitative basis it will be difficult to elucidate the behaviour of complex mill solutions.By the use of physico-chemical theory, it is possible to treat certain aspects of 'the chemistry of cyanide solutions in a manner which not only illustrates the important variables involved, but which also shows the need for care in interpretIng results obtained by conventional methods.In the following, comparatively simple systems are discussed; the principles established should be of use in interpreting the behaviour of more complex solutions. The methods described are not intended for routine work, but may be regarded as supplementary to the usual analysis carried out for the control of plant solutions, or as alternatives to be used when the latter do not appear to be satisfactory.

This paper comprises a discussion of standards for comparing conditions in mines, of methods for measuring the flow of air, of a comparison of fan performances, and the application of these matters to mines in Western Australia.UNDERGROUND CONDITIONSIn approaching the question of mine ventilation one naturally searches for some standard by which to measure the conditions in a mine.There are several clauses in the Mines Regulation Act defining the conditions which are permitted. The quantity of CO2 is limited to 0·25 by volume, but the estimation of CO2 involves a chemical determination and is not suited for general use in a mine.The maximum temperature is fixed at 87 0 F. (dry bulb), and at 80° (wet bulb). The reading of temperature is easily done in the working places, and this is a very valuable and practical test of the conditions in a mine.The wet bulb temperature is probably the most important factor in determining working conditions. It is obvious that human life cannot be sustained for any appreciable period if the wet bulb temperature is above blood heat (about 97°F.). In places where the wet bulb temperature is 90°F. there is danger of heat stroke.In places where the air in a mine is still, the wet bulb temperature rises to a value close to the rock temperature.Adequate ventilation cools the workings by transference of heat from the rock to the air stream, and the temperature...

The general structure of microprocessors and their method of use is described, and de- tails given of their application in two parti- cular examples of instrumentation for mineral concentrators. One is in a pulp density gauge, and using this example, the way in which a microprocessor-based unit can be made to be self-calibrating is described. The other is in an on-stream analysis detector for uranium in solvent, where a microprocessor is used to re- place a mini-computer.

Plastics based on chemically modified organic polymers date back only about 100 years, and those based on synthetic polymers about 50 years. The development of ,these two latter groups up to the present day is outlined, and the basic techniques currently available for polymer-building and modi-fication (blending, copolymerisation, quantitative and qualitative struc-tural control, and'si de-group reactions)-are reviewed.

The N.S.W. Department of Mineral Resources commissioned its first Mobile Gas Laboratory in 1973.Although originally intended for diesel exhaust analysis, it has been progress- ively made more suitable for mine air analysis. Currently there are two upgraded units in operation. These laboratories have been used at the scenes of four mine fires, two mine explosions and three recovery operations. The authors' experience jointly covers all of these incidents. In this paper they recount the role of the Mobile Laboratory in each incident - including the difficulties encountered - and trace the development of these units to their present state. Future improvements are foreshadowed, and some comments offered concerning the likely future role of these vehicles in mine Emergencies.

A 3D graphics modelling system has been applied to longhole stope ring design at Z.C. Mines, Broken Hill, NSW. This has been in operation for a four month period (January, 1988). The purpose of this application was to provide computer assistance to mine planning engineers and blasthole design draftsmen for the longhole design process, particularly by: 1. reducing the- volume of tracing, drafting and geometric manipulation which is a significant feature of the manual design process, 2. providing additional design drawings to enhance the conception and implementation of stoping design.

DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. Stratigraphic correlations across the Mur- phy Tectonic Ridge are crucial to regional corr. elations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River areas. Recent work in the Westmoreland and surrounding areas has substantiated the earlier general correlations between the Mount Isa and McArthur River sequences. The Mount Isa and McArthur Groups, and their equivalents, remain prime prospecting targets for major lead-zinc deposits of the Mount Isa and R.Y.C. type. A prospective area for Redbank-type copper mineralization is suggested.

Over the past 20 years within Australia, there have been a number of incidents at mine sites where ammonium nitrate-based explosives have reacted with certain rock types containing sulfide minerals. These rocks have commonly been referred to as æreactive groundÆ. These reactions have frequently led to fires (particularly in ground susceptible to spontaneous combustion) or premature detonation of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Clearly, this introduces an element of risk when using ammonium nitrate-based explosives in these areas. Dyno Nobel has been proactive in developing ammonium nitrate-based explosive products that can be used in these types of æreactive groundÆ environments that minimise the risk of premature detonations occurring. A system for assessing æreactivityÆ of sulfide containing rocks has been developed that can be used in the field. Previous literature has been reviewed, identifying Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) as the most common method for determining the æreactivityÆ of the ground. In the present investigation, DTA has been rejected as a suitable technique for determining ground reactivity, since it measures thermal reactions at higher temperatures over short time periods, conditions that are unlike those in the field. For example, ground at ambient temperature has been found to react with ammonium nitrate-based explosives over long time periods, reactions that are unable to be evaluated using DTA. Other more suitable techniques have been developed to monitor rock conditions that can be measured in the field and give a good indication of potential ground æreactivityÆ with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Dyno Nobel is currently investigating the reaction mechanisms of spontaneous combustion in reactive ground, the decomposition mechanisms of ammonium nitrate and the role of inhibitors in ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Once complete, this fundamental research will lead to the further development of even lower risk ammonium nitrate-based explosive products for use in æreactive groundsÆ in a variety of mine environments.
