The smelting, refining and hydrometallurgical operations practised in the winning of non-ferrous metals are associated with severe aqueous and high temperature corrosion problems.With the increasing costs of maintenenace and the utilization of computerization to control the processes, the trend in recent years has been to spend more capital on improved and proprietory grades of engineering materials, which offer greater reliability and more cost effective plant performance.The problems which have plagued stainless steel users for many years are the alloys' poor performance in chloride or other halide media where pitting, crevice or chloride induced stress corrosion cracking may occur, have been essentially solved by the new proprietory grades. The controlled additions of minor alloying elements including rare earth metals have led to the development of stainless steels with high mechanical strengths, improved corrosion resistance, and high temperature corrosion resistance and structural stability.

Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.

The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

The present Pacific Ocean arose from rapid sea-floor spreading that commenced in the late Mesozoic, and continues to the present day. It started within what is here called the Medusa complex of seaways, basins and troughs with spreading ridges and volcanic arcs, that girdled the earth, including the Palaeotethys and Neotethys of Eurasia between Gondwanaland and Laurasia. Detailed mapping and analysis of palaeofaunas and volcanic arcs indicate that several seaways, rather than one or two, extended throughout Tethys, and into areas now occupied by the Pacific Ocean. The Medusa complex developed under a long sustained wrench regime, right lateral at least from New Zealand to Eur.ope, and saw the origin, maturation and closure of elongate and oval basins under erratic sea-floor spreading, in which no Eulerian pole of rotation remained fixed for long. The name Medusa stems from the analogy of snake-like writhing hair to the constantly shifting development of basins and orogens within the complex. The Indian Ocean split and opened up Gondwanaland concomitant with the later development and deformation of the Tethyan segment- of Medusa, whereas, to the east, the Pacific Ocean opened within Medusa itself, and dispersed Medusa around the rim of the Pacific through sea-floor spreading and strike-slip faulting.

The AMIRA International P843A Geometallurgical Mapping and Mine Modelling (GeMIII) project is an interdisciplinary research collaboration between 17 global mineral companies and four research organisations aimed at providing support for the emerging industry trend of geometallurgy. The main aim of the project is to develop predictive geometallurgical indices which can be incorporated into a resource block model to maximise the commercial value of an orebody and to minimise the social and environmental impact of mining operations.Researchers at the Parker Centre/CSIRO have been focusing on the development of predictive hydrometallurgical indices for the GeMIII project via rapid, small-scale, cost-effective tests and protocols for comparative ranking of attributes relevant to leach performance. The focus of the small-scale leach tests has been to determine the leach index (relative indication of leach performance), recovery, impurity deportment, reagent consumption, effect of size/degree of liberation and mineralogy of samples for their relative ranking. Predictive tests for heap leach hydrology (related to agglomerate characteristics) and slurry rheological behaviour are also being developed.

Iron ore oxide and oxyhydroxide minerals such as haematite (eg various types of martite and microplaty haematite), different forms of goethite, magnetite, hydrohaematite and kenomagnetite were analysed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) techniques, to determine the type and proportion of deleterious elements present and the chemistry of associated gangue minerals. The aim was to characterise elements potentially deleterious for agglomeration and steelmaking, eg sulfur, phosphorus, aluminium and silicon and correlate their distribution with mineral texture and association, to provide feedback on downstream processing performance and product quality.Examples of characteristic mineral associations are shown from various genetic styles of iron ores, including magnetite banded iron formation (BIF), BIF-derived martite-goethite and skarn-type magnetite ores.A number of examples are presented demonstrating the benefits of the use of combined techniques of reflected optical microscopy, SEM and EPMA data to reliably identify ore and gangue minerals and their associations in different types of iron ores.

This paper is an outgrowth of a continuing compilation of the geology of Chilean ore deposits by Carlos Ruiz who was the author in 1965 of Geologia y Yacimientos Metaliferos de Chile which was the definitive compilation of the ore deposits of Chile. A new version was written by him in 1988, with the co-operation of Federico Peebles L, published in Geologia, Distribucion y Genesis de los Yacimientos Metaliferos Chilenos. Over the past eight years J David Lowell studied the geology of the Chilean mineral belts in connection with planning mineral exploration for copper and gold.

Draglines have been a significant part of world open cut mining since the early part of the 20th century particularly for the removal of overburden in the strip mining of coal. Since the mid-1960s draglines have played a major part in the large strip mining coal developments of Queensland and New South Wales.There are now over 60 large draglines operating in Australia ranging in size from 23 to 103 cubic metres bucket capacity, with digging depths to 60 metres, dumping heights to 50 metres and dumping radii to 100 metres. The application of these draglines has progressed through the uncovering of coal in shallow, single seam operations to deep multi-seam operations requiring a greater dependence on pre-stripping activities ahead of the dragline to remove overburden not able to be efficiently handled by the dragline.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. The intention of this work was to con struct a machine on a pilot scale which could hoist a mixture of ore and water through a height of 300 metres and to operate the mach- ine to determine the parameters which affect the success of upscaling the machine to a pro- duction unit size. The investigation into this form of hoist- ing was stimulated by the interest shown by Roan Selection Trust (RST) into the Mills Pulse vessel system. Agreement was reached between these two parties that RST would in- vestigate the Mills System and determine if this system, shown to be successful on a Lab- oratory scale, would be successful as a pro- duction unit. The investigation has shown, however, that for practical reasons, the Mills System is not satisfactory. As a consequence, the RST system was invented and developed which on a pilot plant scale would be capable of lifting 7,000 tonnes of ore per month. The inventions included amongst other things, a valve to control the flow of the abrasive mixture of ore and water, a new pumping system employing a filter mechanism, and a method of changing the downward direction of flow of the pipe mixture through the plant to an upward flow in the hoisting pipe. The valve has operated to pressures equivalent to 300 metres

In the British coal mining industry, during the last decade, a great deal of environmental monitoring experience was acquired, particularly in the Doncaster Area of the Yorkshire coal- field, which had a long history of spontaneous combustion and gas emission problems. This paper summarises the experience obtained and shows how the introduction and operation of these systems has resulted in improved techniqu- es for fire detection and control. Some of these systems are described in detail with emphasis placed on the uses to which output data are put, and their impact upon management at colliery level. Reference is also made to the problems encountered in the development of such systems and how they were solved. The paper also makes reference to the recent Research and Development work of the NCB's Scientific Department and Mining Res- earch Development Establishment (MRDE), which was directed to the design and application of a range of underground sensors, and so ensured continuing progress in this field. The paper refers briefly to a new comprehensive monitoring unit and an integrated fire detection and data transmitting system which are currently being assessed in the Yorkshire coalfield.

A Feasibility Study to determine the future of ZC Mines was completed in mid 1987. Early in this study, which lasted two years, it was identified that significant reductions in treatment costs would result if the Zinc Corporation Concentrator was closed. All of the production from the existing two mines, The Zinc Corporation Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC), would then be treated in the concentrator at NBHC.After a partial upgrade of the NBHC concentrator, the ZC concentrator was finally closed and all of the equipment disposed of. This closure highlighted the need to concentrate all ore haulage in one shaft to further reduce operating costs and remove the cost of surface transport of ZC production to the improved NBHC concentrator. This paper outlines the changes that were made to improve the haulage system for ZC Mines. After a number of options were investigated, it was finally decided that the upgrade of the existing NBHC haulage shaft was the best option even though some production would be lost while the upgrade was in progress.

The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port KKembla steelworks of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and -South Western Coalfields. The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal. Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each sear. The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Sean in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin Colleries.

Production targets are the basis for almost every decision made by operations personnel in the daily operation of a concentrator. It is the production targets that determine how the plant is operated and therefore determine its efficiency. However, to achieve maximum plant efficiency production targets must be relevant to the process and achievable.In RoseberyÆs case, for many years, production targets were taken from budget data which, with the exception of mill feed tonnes and grades were carried forward from the previous budget. The zinc concentrate grade target was fixed at 57 per cent Zn, a long-term average; it was the accepted æstandardÆ for Rosebery. Historical data showed this target was never consistently achieved and plant efficiency was highly variable.Investigations into the possible causes for the variable performance ruled out plant and mechanical issues. Despite the Rosebery concentratorÆs age the plant and equipment are more than serviceable and reliable. The mineralogy of the ore and specifically the iron content of the sphalerite was found to be the most significant determinant of zinc concentrate grade. It was found with increasing frequency that the zinc grade of the sphalerite in the ore was below the zinc concentrate grade target. Consequently on these occasions attempts to meet the required concentrate target destabilised the process resulting in plant inefficiencies.Using the correlation between iron and zinc, data modelling was able to accurately predict the maximum zinc concentrate grade achievable for any ore type. By using on stream analysis instrumentation the operations personnel are now provided with constantly updated concentrate grade targets. By knowing the mineralogical limits of the ore at the time it is being treated process stability is maintained allowing plant efficiency to be optimised. This has resulted in a step change in plant performance and a significant increase in revenue.CITATION:Harris, G R, 2012. Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. The concept of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and the organ- isation to achieve its construction are covered in the companion papers (Reference 1, 2) and will not be repeated here. The Victorian Railways, as well as being the eventual operator of the Loop when it is completed by MURLA, have also been responsible as "Contractors" to MURLA for the construction of the "cut and cover" or "box" tunnels and related approach works located on existing Railway property. These tunnel connections link the existing suburban system to the new underground works. The following tabulation indicates the significant work volume involved in this cut and cover tunnelling exercise and which is covered in some detail by this paper.
