The Legacy Way Tunnel was constructed from Toowong to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, and is the first large-scale underground excavation in the Bunya Phyllite in Brisbane. The Legacy Way Tunnel is 4.3 km in length, comprising two mainline tunnels excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with 46 connecting passages excavated between the mainline tunnels for egress provision and services. The Legacy Way Tunnel passes through two geological formations, the Bunya Phyllite and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The Bunya Phyllite is the dominant formation of the Legacy Way Tunnel, extending for three quarters of the tunnel prior to intersecting the Normanby Fault Zone (NFZ) and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The NFZ forms the contact between the two formations as part of the Brisbane Metamorphics, which underlies the majority of Brisbane City. The development of the geological model and the understanding of the ground’s reaction to tunnelling was an iterative process. The tender phase investigation data has been supplemented with additional design phase investigation boreholes, geophysics and walk overs. Aerial photograph interpretation coupled with borehole data allowed the development of the domains along the length of the tunnel. Early excavations for the spoil conveyor tunnel and borehole data from subsurface instrumentation installation provided the first construction phase data followed by the commencement of tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. Routine cutterhead inspections coupled with ongoing reviews of the predicted geology resulted in clear response triggers to selection of segment types while detailed inspections in passage locations provide the initial classifications for segment removals.CITATION:Bennett, C and Norbert, M, 2014. The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is Australia's largest single coal producer. Approximately 19 Mt of coal will be produced in 1989 from the SEC V's newest mine, Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC), which com- menced overburden stripping operation in October 1982. When the adja- cent Loy Yang Power Station is completed in the late 1990's, LYOC will supply between 35 to 45 Mt/a, depending on power station performance and demand of coal for non-power generation uses. LYOC has been a major challenge for the SECV. It is the biggest single open pit coal mining development undertaken in Australia, with a whole of life capital cost approaching A$1 billion. The mine has supplied a very rapidly growing demand for coal from the expanding power station while developing in breadth, length and depth. Coal demand has consistently been above the figures anticipated during the initial planning because of the substantially improved performance of the 500 MW units of the Loy Yang A Power Station. The superior performance of the LYOC and power station has generated additional electrical energy during the first 5 years of power station operation compared with the initial planning targets- at almost no additional capital cost. This has been a major benefit to the SECV. LYOC will continue to present major challenges for the SECV, particularly in achieving overburden removal and coal reserve targets as development of the open cut continues to full depth over the next 15 years.

The process design for green- or brown-fields metallurgical plants typically starts with two fundamental elements: the detailed mass and energy balance and the plant flow availability. The detailed mass and energy balance is generally developed using process flow-sheet simulation software and represents the steady-state operation of the plant at normal operating conditions. The plant flow availability, also known as a range of other industry-specific terms such as ‘flow availability’ and ‘operating factor’, describes the ratio of plant production to the steady-state mass balance. These elements are then used together as the basis for equipment selection and design.Plant flow availability takes into account a myriad of production loss factors including planned and breakdown maintenance, feed availability and composition changes, variability in operational performance and the interaction of batch and continuous unit operations. The combined impact of these loss factors are complex and as such plant flow availability is usually derived using a top-down approach such as comparison to an existing operation, a group of similar operations or to an anecdotal ‘industry leading’ benchmark. These top-down approaches are fraught with risk however, as they cannot factor in changes to equipment selection, flow-sheet or plant operating philosophy, and can result in over-expenditure of scarce capital or shortfalls in plant production.The use of dynamic simulation to provide a bottom-up alternative to quantifying the plant flow availability in metallurgical plant design has been growing rapidly in recent years. It provides a technique to quantify the combined impact of the loss factors described here and a tool to support process design and equipment selection by facilitating a range of sensitivity and what-if analyses. THE area of the State of New South Wales is not great, nevertheless it has very large and important Mineral Resources. This is the more noticeable when the values of the annual mineral production from the individual States of the Commonwealth arecompared with the value of the New South Wales production. The principal minerals mined now are not gold, copper, and tin, as they were in the early years following the gold rush of 1851, the centre of gravity of commercial mineral activity having moved to coal and "oil-shale," water, limestone (with cement), silver-lead-zinc cadmium, sulphur, slate and other building and ornamental stone, road materials, and clays.From small areas totalling only 650 sq. miles, coal to the extent of 311,000,000 tons, valued at £151,000,000, has been won.The estimate of actual and probable reserves by the Mines Department within an area of less than 1000 sq. miles is about 14,000,000,000 tons, while the potential reserves within the remaining 15,500 sq. miles of concealed coal fields must be enormous. Even taking into account only the actual and pI:obable reserves in the 1000 sq. miles known, and assuming a depletion at the rate of 350,000,000 tons a year, or somewhat greater than that of the British Isles at present, and assuming an average value of £1 a ton, with money at 5% compound interest, then the present value of this coal (40 years of depletion) would be £5,575,000,000 approximately: truly an enormous present value for a business of 40 years, dealing only with 1000 sq. miles of country. The location of the main coal basin in New South Wales is one of great strategic importance. It lies almig and near a seaboard, with excellent facilities for anchorage; the coal is of very high quality, and is readily accessible; the climate is admirable. Were this same coal at Port Darwin, its commercial importance would not be be pronounced.

From the very early stages of a mining project, there is a requirement to predict the chemistry of potential drainages from various waste storage facilities. However, using relative masses to scale chemical loads measured by laboratory kinetic tests, such as humidity cells, to a full-scale mine waste facility will lead to concentration predictions that are unrealistically high for many dissolved constituents. Scaling factors developed by various procedures indicate that laboratory rates may range anywhere from two to eight times (Drever and Clow, 1995) to 100 to 1000 times faster than field rates (Malmstrom et al, 2000; Smith and Beckie, 2003; Ritchie, 1994). This contribution will use previous works and secondary data to discuss the significance of scale in water quality predictions. It will also present primary experimental geochemical and numerical data from a column leaching study on coal spoils to discuss potential applications of mesoscale leaching tests in bridging the gap between bench-top tests and field scale trials.

The steel industry accounts for 14 per cent of domestic CO2 emission in Japan, and iron ore sintering process occupies approximately three per cent. While Fe content in iron ore is gradually decreasing. So, the amount of concentrated iron ore will increase in the future. We have focused on magnetite concentrate as sinter materials, because magnetite can be easily magnetically beneficiated. However, it is experienced that blending magnetite ore resulted in increasing Fe2+ component in the iron ore sinter, which results in lower reducibility. Therefore, promoting the oxidation reaction from magnetite to hematite in the sintering process is countermeasure for reducibility. In addition, this promotion causes increase of oxidation heat, which results in high sinter strength and reduction of coke. It is assumed that the oxidation of magnetite tends to proceed in the cooling stage, where the oxygen partial pressure increases after the combustion of fine coke, but there are few studies on the effect of heat profile, especially cooling path. The purpose of this study is to design the effective sintering heat profile to promote oxidation of magnetite ore, especially, to investigate the effect of cooling path on sintered ore microstructure. In this study, magnetite ore and magnetite reagent were respectively mixed with calcium carbonate reagent. Then the mixed samples were pressed and formed into cylindrical tablets for simulating the adhesive layer of a pseudo particle. Through examining influence of maximum temperature and cooking rate on oxidation reaction of magnetite, we confirmed that the oxidation reaction of magnetite is suppressed at above 1350°C for maximum temperature, compared to 1300°C. Sintering at lower temperature is desirable because hematite is stable below 1350°C in the Fe2O3-CaO phase diagram.

"Even with the cyclic nature of mining, when it comes down to it, the bottom line is that whatever direction the commodity market is going there is always a desire to improve the economics of an operation in order to deliver a greater return to investors. Adapting to market pressures by introduction of an operational process change can often have a downstream impact. What may be less obvious is that reconciliation can play an important part in measuring the effectiveness of many operational changes. Through the adoption of best practice reconciliation and related comparisons, it is possible to measure the impact of changes across the mine value chain and identify variability that may have been introduced. Using analytical business improvement tools, examining and monitoring planned changes can be crucial in understanding whether the introduced changes have been effective and whether they have provided the expected result. Coal and gas outburst is a common hazard in coalmines and due to the complexity of its nature, efficaciously predicting the possibility of its occurrence is intricate. The mechanical and gas flow properties of coal, in situ and mining-induced stresses and geological structure are involved in outburst occurrence, whereas suggested thresholds for its prediction do not consider them all. Numerical modelling is known as an effective method that can not only consider couple the effect of different physics but also analyse the effect of associated parameters. In this paper, a coupled fluid flow and geomechanics model has been developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to simulate outbursts by considering the effect of gas pressure and composition, damage mechanics on related coal properties, and progressive excavation and mining-induced stress. For the proposed fully coupled outburst model, the effect of pore pressure and sorption are applied to the stress while the influence of stress changes and damage are considered in updating coal porosity and permeability in each time step. In addition, to study the effect of mining-induced stress, the excavation process is simulated by changing the material properties over time according to the schedule of heading development. Then, outburst initiation is analysed from the energy point of view by using the concept of energy conservation law. The simulation results are used in calculating energy sources of the outburst initiation, also, the effect of particle size and ejection velocity are studied, and the significance of particle size effect on the energy analysis and deformed coal on outburst initiation is discussed.

Zhangmatun Iron Mine is situated in the suburbs of Jinan city. Shandong, China. Because of surface environmental constraints, no suitable site can he selected to dispose of mill waste. The full mill tailings must be disposed of underground. This paper deals with the work conducted at Zhangmatun mine to develop a total tailings backfill system, taking advantage of a double- shaft blade mixer and an activating agitator to prepare backfill. Cement and ground slag are added to tailings for strength development. Two scopes have been filled and the pillars have been effectively mined out during the field trial. The application of innovative total tailings backfill technology is a new concept at the mine. Detailed planning has achieved a close integration of mining, milling and backfilling. Full mill tailings, with or without rock, are disposed of underground in a continuous process to fill, totally and systematically, the cavities formed by mining.

Leaders have invested heavily in traditional safety management to improve safety performance over the years. This primarily involved: • fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard) • improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc) • making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). These approaches have helped improve safety performance significantly during the last 50 years and will continue to play a role in the future. Although these approaches may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

It has long been recognised that narrow vein mining needs innovative approaches to mine access and mining methods in order to improve the economics of this vital part of the mining industry. The mining equipment used currently requires large openings in narrow vein-type deposits making mining operations uneconomical. In view of this and other shortcomings of the current mining practices, a study was initiated to investigate the potential of using low profile electric loader with mounted conveyor in conjunction with the electric monorail haulage system (EMTS) to load and haul the blasted material, particularly in decline development and main haulages. Computer simulation based on the General Purpose Simulation System/Henrikson (GPSS/H) is used to model the system and evaluate its performance. The results are compared with those for conventional mining using trucks and loaders. The EMTS provides competitive haulage rates in substantially smaller excavations than is currently achievable. According to simulation results, the electric loader in conjunction with the EMTS had the same number of blasts as the conventional system and hence the same advance rate of 3.33 m per 12 hour shift. Furthermore, the total drill-blast-load-haul cycle time was less than the conventional system by one hour.CITATION:Besa, B and Chanda, E K, 2012. Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75° west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response on a tight grid spacing.

The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

Copper concentration using flotation is becoming more difficult, because of an increase in ore complexity accompanied by smaller grain sizes of copper minerals than usual, requiring finer grinding in order to liberate them. Project Arqueros, located at the mid northern part of Chile, is a copper mine project with an orebody consisting of various sulfides such as chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and bornite. Some of the copper minerals in Arqueros show low floatability mainly because of their fine grain size and resulted fine grinding size, and also because of the complex mineralogical composition. For example, chalcopyrite in Arqueros floats less than the other copper sulfide minerals. In this study we carried out some kinetic flotation tests with the Arqueros ore using a laboratory-scale forced air type flotation machine by varying the regrinding size. The products were assayed and mineralogically analysed to compare the minerals in their flotation behaviour with respect to size classes and liberation classes. The results were compared with a model calculation according to bubble size measurement. From the flotation testing and mineralogical analysis, it was found that copper minerals of the same size and liberation class floated at the same rate even with different regrinding size. At the same time the comparison between experiment and calculation showed that the fine particles of less than 5 µm size floated faster in actual than in the model applied. These results suggested that interactions among minerals of different species and of different sizes had positive impacts on the flotation rate of the fine particles. It indicates that this phenomenon can be applied to improve copper recovery in the project.

The problem of recovery of cobalt products from poorly oxidised nickel ores (Kempirsaisk deposit) and pyrite concentrates with a low content of cobalt (Sokolovsk-Sarbaisky deposit) has not been solved to the present time in Kazakstan. The balance reserves of nickel ore of the Kempirsaisky deposit make up more than 35 million tons with a nickel content of 1.13 per cent and cobalt content of 0.05 per cent; besides there are 110 millions tons of out-balance ores (Anon, 1995). In a tailing dump of Sokolovsk-Sarbaisk Mining and Productional Association more than 320 million tons of tailings of wet magnetic separation have accumulated, which contain 7.2 per cent of sulphur, 0.022 per cent of cobalt, 0.012 per cent of nickel, 0.094 per cent of copper, 0.079 per cent of zinc, 16.45 per cent of iron, and from which a high quality pyrite concentrate car) he separated through flotation, containing 48 - 50 per cent of sulphur, 44.15 per cent of iron, 0.141 per cent of cobalt, 0.07 per cent of nickel, and 0.10 per cent of copper. The well-known technological flow charts for cobalt and nickel recovery from the tailings of sulphide-magnetite ores dressing (to give pyrite concentrate) and from oxidised nickel ores, are not profitable at the existing prices for metals, but are not worthless and require significant capital investments for the realisation of their value. The flow chart `sulphate roasting - leaching - solution processing' is used widely for combined processing of cobalt-containing pyrite ores and concentrates.

Over the past decade, discrete element method (DEM) simulations have seen increasing adoption by the resources sector to inform the design of materials handling equipment such as transfer chutes, bins and hoppers. But, if ‘all models are wrong, but some are useful’ (Box, 1979) what approaches are available to check that a DEM simulation is useful? How to avoid garbage in equals garbage out. This work considers what properties of bulk solid flow behaviour are important to transfer chute simulation. Cohesive bulk solids (such as sticky iron ore fines) can develop sufficient strength to form a stable cohesive arch, this phenomenon is not well predicted by measurements of angle of repose. This work presents a two-part approach to the development of a useful DEM model that can be used to add value to the design and optimisation of bulk materials handling equipment. Part 1 is the calibration of not just one, but a range of material models chosen to envelope the range of anticipated materials that will be handled. This work describes the DEM simulation of a batch of direct shear cell tests to develop material models that can be measured by the same metrics routinely used to characterise the flowability of cohesive iron ore fines. Part 2 of this work describes systematic methods for validation of the transfer chute DEM simulations. The DEM model is only useful if it can adequately represent the typical problems observed within a transfer chute, such as blockages due to build-up and cohesive arching. Proper validation requires good observations. Validation examples of site observations are shown side-byside with simulations to demonstrate the adequacy of the DEM model and calibration approach. DEM simulations have the potential to add significant value by allowing engineers and designers to predict material flow-through equipment based on a range of material properties, allowing for stress testing designs and making iterative improvements.

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow-level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of δ34 SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë; n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). Vein quartz from the mineralised zone at Waitangi yields δ18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). Fluid inclusion studies indicate a homogenisation temperature range of 190¦ - 296¦C and salinity range of 0.2 - 3.0 wt per cent NaCl equivalent. Similar temperature and salinity ranges have been recorded for the other gold deposits in the Coromandel Peninsula. PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) analysis revealed that the Waitangi ore fluids have 1090 - 2700 ppm K (average 1600), 145 - 205 ppm Ca (average 180), 80 - 100 ppm Mn (average 90), and 80 - 200 ppm Fe (average 120) but no detectable Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Pb and Bi (only one fluid inclusion contains 28 ppm Zn). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source (either directly, or by leaching of igneous sulphides). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1 - 5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in δ18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Mixing of ore fluids with convective ground water is a likely mechanism for gold deposition in a shallow environment for the Waitangi vein system and there is also lack of fluid inclusion evidence (eg liquid-rich and vapour-rich inclusions in the same growth zone) for boiling of ore fluids. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that δ18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Most compact bucket wheel excavators in use are in the small to medium range. Large compact bucket wheel excavators compete directly with con- ventional longer boom excavators which have operational advantages over the large compact. There are, however, situations where the large com- pact excavator is viable. In the development of these large compacts there are a number of technical features to be addressed. In addition the SECV now propose to expand the concept to a large compact bucket wheel excavator with a bridge and loading unit for their Loy Yang Open Cut.
