Increasing demand for fine grinding to improve mineral liberation and metal recovery and the need for stricter control of the environmental impact of tailings deposition poses problems for tailings disposal. This has led to an increasing number of investigations of properties of tailings and their disposal. This paper describes laboratory model testing undertaken on Macraes mine flotation tailings to provide information on tailings behaviour under conditions of subaerial deposition. The in-place density or 'dry density' of the impounded tailings and the impoundment depth relationship are important for utilisation of the available impoundment storage facility and results of dry density to depth relationships are given for the Macraes mine tailings impoundment.

FOR many years past it has been the practice at the Bairnsdale School of Mines to treat any parcels of auriferous concentrates sent in from the surrounding district by roasting them in a handworked reverberatory, and then chlorinating or cyaniding the product. According to Donald CIark, who has done a large amount of work on these ores, the results obtained were fairly satisfactory extractions of over 90 per cent being claimed. With some modifications, the method has been very generally adopted, not only in Gippsland but throughout Victoria. It is, however, difficult to get exact information as to the extractions actually obtained, and unfortunately no records of working results have been kept at the Bairnsdale School of Mines.Having treated several lots of ore by this method during 1907 and 1908 with unsatisfactory results, the writers thought it desirable to make a detailed investigation on some particular ore, both in the laboratory and on a working scale. The ore selectedwas a parcel of low-grade concentrates from Stirling, a small mining field situated about forty miles to the east of Bairnsdale. This ore was chosen chiefly on account of the heavy and inexplicable volatilization loss which took place even on roasting with the greatest care; the loss amounting to between 10 and 15 per cent. Bench stoping operations at the Isa Lead mine have been underway for over 11 years. They were implemented to address safety, productivity and mining cost concerns noted with cut and fill mining operations which were then being used to extract ore from the Racecourse orebodies. This paper describes the main features of benching operations at the Isa Lead mine and identifies the key elements for the success of the method. Four case histories are presented which highlight several of these factors.

A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

Holla has given a good background to the various methods of subsidence control in the coalfields around Sydney.The present writer notes that in many cases, especially with wide longwall panels, there is not the flexibility to alter the mine layout as there is to some degree with the various pillar extraction methods. For this reason it may not be possible to plan the workings to minimise subsidence and some damage to structures may occur. The cost of repair or the cost of subsidence provisions to minimise damage may be small in relation to the tonnages of coal which would otherwise have to be sterilised. One method of subsidence control which has been in use in the Newcastle area since 1970 is the panel and pillar layout (partial extraction layouts with stable pillars). An extracted panel width of 0.6 times the depth of cover resulted in a maximum subsidence of 115 mm for an extracted seam thickness of 2.2 m.As Holla points out, the extracted panel widths in relation to th depth of cover depend on the particular geological setting. His Fig. 3 shows that the subsidence over a panel width of 0.3 times the cover depth in the Southern Coalfield is the same as over a panel width of 0.55 to 0.6 times the cover depth in the Northern Coalfield.Selective pillar extraction and longwall mining can both be used in the panel and pillar layout. Holla's Figs 2 and 3 are used to estimate the maximum subsidence over an extracted panel of known geometry. Maximum subsidence is related to seam thickness. What provision is made for a reduction in subsidence due to the coal which remains behind in a pillar extraction panel if the pillar recovery is poor? The writer suggests that an effective seam height could be used, based on the actual mining height reduced by a factor to account for the percentage recovery of coal from an extracted panel.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

Following the successful completion of a marked ball test defining the potential wear benefits the high chrome alloys may offer against forged steel, as well as laboratory test work investigating changes in pulp chemistry and improvements to metallurgical performance, a plant trial was commissioned at NewcrestÆs Ridgeway concentrator. The paper briefly describes these results.Newcrest decided to convert their media charge by the top-up method. To monitor the trial a sampling protocol was put in place whereby the pulp chemistry was monitored before, during and after the purge. The metallurgical shift data was analysed using various statistical methods to determine if the metallurgical performance had improved with the change in grinding media. While the analysis indicated that the metallurgy had improved, not all of the benefits could be assigned to the change in grinding media alone. However, the combination of reduction in media wear and the increases in copper and gold recoveries suggested that it was economically viable to operate with high chrome grinding media.As with many trials of this nature the prevailing economic conditions are fluid and a decision was made to revert back to forged steel grinding media in an effort to reduce operating costs. It was further agreed that Magotteaux could monitor the pulp chemistry and metallurgical changes in this reverse trial to confirm the results observed in the earlier conversion to high chrome grinding media.CITATION:Greet, C J, Hitchen, C and Kinal, J, 2012. I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.

This paper describes the method of extracting sill pillars within the underground operation from under unconsolidated mullock fill at the Cracow Gold Mine. This pillar recovery method was initially successfully used to recover sill pillars at Crusader Mine, Western Australia in 2001. Globally significant resources have been sterilised due to the placement of loose rock fill above crown pillars and within adjacent stopes. The method described here offers significant opportunities to increase recovery of sill pillar recoveries.The royal orebody sill pillars at Cracow Gold Mine form a significant resource. Extraction of these pillars needed to be undertaken with minimal ore dilution and maximum ore recovery. The application that was selected to consolidate the loose mullock fill above each pillar used an injection grouting process (Minova FB200).Cracow Gold Mine mining method is bottom up bench mining. The pillars were left within the orebody to allow for stoping to commence whilst the decline was being developed. Due to the remainder of the orebody being extracted the only access to consolidate the backfill was from the sill pillar extraction level. Numerous problems were encountered and overcome from product selection and trial, system of injection to extraction.This pillar recovery process achieved a 95 per cent recovery of the sill pillar compared with an estimated 60 per cent typical for other mining options.CITATION:Potts, L, Mutton, V and Joyce, D, 2012. Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

Geological, textural and mineralogical classification of iron ores is routinely conducted by mine and exploration geologists on reverse circulation percussion, blasthole cone and bulk samples for grade control, defining ore and waste, determining lump:fines ratio and predicting downstream processing characteristics. Classification is based on physical hardness, colour, streak and other visual characteristics. However, logging is generally restricted to the five to 20 per cent of chips above about 2 mm. This means that most of the sample is too fine to be reliably logged for anything but colour or streak and the textural types must be inferred from other information. A recently developed software package called æRecognitionÆ allows automated identification and classification of iron ore textural types and gangue on a particle basis in polished section down to 0.01 mm using processed digital images. It is not designed to be used as a routine logging tool, but is applicable where higher definition is required at the resource evaluation stage on selected percussion, drill core or bulk samples. æRecognitionÆ processes data obtained after optical image analysis of fine iron ore samples. It contains several parts, like æRecognitionÆ, æCompositionÆ, æLiberation by Total IronÆ, æLiberation by PhasesÆ and æStatisticsÆ, which allow vast and diverse information to be obtained about the iron ore samples being studied. Identification and classification of the textural type of each particle is performed according to the CSIRO-Hamersley Iron Ore Group Classification Scheme. The recognition procedure encompasses a good knowledge of different ore types and a logical knowledge tree, managing fuzzy boundary problems and the potential for a few different ore types in the same particle to be considered. This new technology introduces strict criteria to make the process of identifying particles more objective. Automated recognition standardises the identification procedure and significantly saves time. It enables users without a strong background in mineralogy to perform accurate texture identification. The æRecognitionÆ package has a modern user-friendly interface and Word compatible output. The combination of all the features mentioned makes the package a convenient tool for detailed studies of fine iron ores.

The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h. Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

There have been enormous changes in mineral processing in the past four decades. For example grinding mill power has increased by an order of magnitude, regrinding is done to -10 microns and flotation machines are 100 times bigger. Operating staff have unprecedented opportunities for online monitoring and performance control of mineral processing plants. Sophisticated instruments can provide a plethora of data characterising the mineralogy and surfaces of particles. Digital computers allow complex calculations on huge amounts of data including modelling and simulation of machine and plant performance. However, all these changes have not necessarily lead to better metallurgical results. An analogy can be drawn with the thoroughbred racing industry in Australia. Significant advances in scientific knowledge in animal genetics, physiology, biomechanics and nutrition applied to the business have resulted in only a two per cent reduction in winning times for the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup since the 1920s. A critical look at some mineral processing metrics suggests similar failures to improve performance despite putting in more resources. In fact certain parameters such as operating times and plant start-up performance are considered to have remained static or even deteriorated. There has been an emphasis on 'process' at the expense of 'outcomes'. The industry's strength has been in finding technical (or 'hardware') solutions while its weakness has been at the people end of the business in maximising and consolidating the gains from the technologies. Some trends in plant design over these years have exacerbated the apparent deskilling of operating and technical staff. Despite unparalleled options for communications, some staff are embarrassingly uninformed about technical developments in their fields. The 'boom and bust' cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operations, raise serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector. This paper by two experienced mineral processing engineers, with contributions from other senior practitioners, reviews these trends. While there may be an element of 'the older we are, the better we were', it is an attempt to identify the issues and propose solutions.

When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

The selection of Sydney and Port Kembla for the First Ordinary Meeting of the Institute for 1938 was, no doubt, a recognition of the celebrations marking the 150th Anniversary of the first settlement of this country. In selecting a theme for my Presidential Address, I propose to depart from the precedents of my distinguished predecessors, as I feel that this year of celebration is the natural year for a brief review of the history and progress of the Institute.In July, 1892, the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its Annual Conference in Ballarat, Victoria, when Mr. Uriah Dudley, who attended as a delegate from Broken Hill, brought forward the advisability of the formation of an Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Mr. Dudley was authorised to take such action as he thought fit, and the result was the formation of a Provisional Committee in Broken Hill of men who were mostly members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Broken Hill was therefore really the birthplace of the Institute.A circular headed Broken Hill, September, 1892, with the signature of Uriah Dudley, Acting Hon.
