The NZ Minerals Industry Association has continued to advance the interests of the minerals sector through leading the establishment of a Minerals Industry Advisory Committee, and the preparation of a technology strategy with funding assistance from the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology. The current moves mirror those of more than 30 years ago when a government initiative led to a resurgence of exploration through amending the mining legislation, redirecting Government research priorities and tax changes. The economic and political and commercial environment in 2001 is very different from that of the 1960s and success of these new initiatives depends on the continuing support and involvement of all sectors of the minerals industry, and building an improved relationship with the Government and the public.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

When Centaur Mining and Exploration produced nickel metal fromlaterite ore at its Cawse nickel project in January 1999, a new era in the nickel industry was heralded in. One of three new laterite projects commissioned that year, new technology and a unique process design has been combined at Cawse to launch what will be amongst the worldÆs cheapest nickel production. However, the road to success has proven to be long and challenging. Since the last paper on mining methods was presented to the Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1:960, numerous advances have been made in drilling and blasting techniques at Mount Morgan. This paper describes the drilling and blasting methods being employed in the open cut. The change over to track mounted percussion drills for all types of primary drilling is almost complete and new techniques such as detergent drilling and pressure loading of ANFO are being applied successfully.

The Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) of SW China is host to magmatic Ni–Cu–(PGE) sulfide and Fe–Ti–V oxide deposits which contain economic to subeconomic concentrations of precious and base metals. The formation of a given deposit-type (ie sulfide versus oxide) is thought to be related to the type of parental magma (ie high-Ti versus low-Ti) and the subsequent processes (ie fractional crystallisation and sulfide segregation), which allowed for metal enrichment.We examined the PGE of Baima and Taihe oxide-bearing layered mafic intrusions from the ELIP (Shellnutt, Ma and Qi, in press), and compared them with the nearby Xinjie and Hongge intrusions as well as with the Emeishan flood basalts. The PGE results for the two intrusions are contrasting. The Baima gabbroic rocks are almost PGE-barren (SPGE < 4 ppb) whereas the Taihe gabbroic rocks are variable, but generally much higher in PGE concentrations (SPGE < 2 to ~300 ppb), although the gabbros from both intrusions are enriched in platinum-subgroup PGE (PPGE = Rh, Pt and Pd) relative to iridium-subgroup PGE (IPGE = Os, Ir and Ru). Cu/Zr, Ni/Ir, Y/Pt, Cu/Pd and Ni/Ir systematics suggest that the Baima rocks were derived from a relatively evolved, mafic, S-undersaturated parental magma that was affected by earlier sulfide segregation. In contrast, the Taihe rocks record evidence of both S-saturated and S-undersaturated conditions and that the parental magma was likely emplaced very close to S-saturation. Through comparison of the PGE contents in the Emeishan flood basalts and the Emeishan oxide-bearing intrusions, we provide a self-consistent model for ELIP that the PGE budget in a magma is not strictly controlled by magma series (high-Ti versus low-Ti), but very much by crustal contamination.CITATION:Ma, G, Shellnutt, J G and Qi, L, 2015. The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

Flue dust from the sintering of base metal sulphides was leached to remove cadmium and arsenic. Leach liquor contained cadmium, zinc and small amounts of other base metals as chlorides. Results are reported of the use of a cation exchange resin Zeocarb 225 to separate the base metals from the arsenic. The resin was eluted with sodium chloride or sulphate to give a solution of relatively concentrated cadmium suitable for recovery by zinc cementation. The limited solubility of sodium sulphate presented some practical problems which were investigated. Another problem was the precipitation of lead sulphate in the resin during elution.INTRODUCTIONWhen lead-zinc sulphides are sintered prior to smelting, the gases passing to the flue are mainly uncondensable but contain a certain proportion of sublimates and dust particles which deposit in the flue or are carried, after condensation in the gas stream, to some form of dust extraction equipment.The recovered dust is a complex mixture of base metal sulphates, sulphites, sulphides, chlorides and oxides, the composition depending on the original concentrates. A large proportion of the cadmium and some of the arsenic originally in the concentrates finds its way to this flue dust, the treatment of which can be a convenient means of removing these elements and controlling their concentrations in the main lead-zinc smelter circuit. However, disposing of this material represents an appreciable waste of base metals as well as a serious toxicity hazard.Sulphide Corporation Pty. Within CRLÆs lifetime there have been a number of products that have proceeded through their life cycles. In each case market forces and technological advances have forced the cessation of the product. The company has then had to develop alternative outlets for its copper. Sometimes it has produced a similar product to fill the same market. In other cases the extra copper is sold as cathode. Today, CRL produces no semi-fabricated copper products and all cathode is sold. More recently, CRL has ventured into the sale of technology and manufacture of cathode motherplates. This area, whilst it is not what had been a traditional area of core business, has been found to be profitable.

The El Salvador porphyry Cu deposit (26¦ 15Æ Lat S, ~2700 masl) and associated exotic mineralisation is situated at the back-scarp of the late middle Miocene Atacama pediplain in the western Precordillera. New, together with published 40Ar-39Ar data from El Salvador combined with morphologic analysis reveal that the palaeospring plumbing system related to exotic mineralisation at the Damiana exotic Cu deposit and the local geomorphology has not changed fundamentally between the late Eocene and late Miocene. Stable H/D isotope data on supergene alunite from El Salvador indicate an overall increase in dD values (VSMOW) from -74ë at 35.82 ¦ 0.95 Ma to -23ë at ~11 Ma. The transition from strongly to moderately negative deuterium values occurred between ~16 and ~13.5 Ma. Supergene alunite from the El Hueso (3950 masl) sedimentary rock-hosted epithermal deposit ca 35 km SE from El Salvador was dated at 8.19 ¦ 0.01 Ma and yielded a dD value of -25ë. We interpret the increasing deuterium excess as the result of strong evaporation and recycling of meteoric water after ~15 Ma and as indicative for a change in precipitation patterns and climate desiccation. In contrast, the strongly negative dD value for late Eocene supergene alunite points to a more humid climate and an elevation similar to the present. The late Miocene supergene activity at El Hueso is probably related to an uplift of the Precordillera to elevations sufficient for capture of orographically controlled precipitation. The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.

As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. I refer to the late Mr. Delprat, who, as General Manager of The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, had under his control for many years the smeltery in this centre. Drill hole magnetometric resistivity (DHMMR) is a relatively recent addition to the explorationistsÆ suite of techniques for finding further resources in the vicinity of a drill hole. The method relies on gathering of an applied current into zones which are less resistive than the country rocks and it was first applied to exploration programs looking for weakly conductive sulphides, such as, for example, carbonate-hosted zinc deposits. More recently, it has been applied to a wider range of deposit styles, including highly conductive nickel sulphides. It has been found that the technique is capable of not only detecting mineralisation not seen by conventional electromagnetic (EM) techniques, but it can detect at a greater distance. Also, whilst EM is superior at defining tabular-shaped conductors, DHMMR may be more effective at finding cigar shaped sulphides. This paper presents a number of examples illustrating these findings.

Comparing Energy Efficiency of Multi-Pass High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) Circuits With increased emphasis on reducing costs and carbon emissions in mineral processing, it is becoming essential to employ the most efficient comminution devices and to use them to maximum effect. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are considered highly efficient compared with other devices, however their relative efficiency in multi-HPGR circuits is less well understood. A series of comminution tests was carried out to evaluate three multi-pass HPGR circuits and a jaw crusher-ball mill circuit. Combinations of HPGR units (1.0 m and 0.25 m diameter), jaw crushers and Bond ball mills were used to grind a 32 mm top size porphyry copper feed (BBWI = 12.1) to a product P80 size of about 150 ¦m. Up to three passes of HPGR were used in each circuit, with energy measurement and size analysis at each point in the comminution process. The energy efficiencies of individual comminution stages and of the overall circuits were quantified and evaluated using three different approaches. The operating work index method for comparing comminution energy efficiency underestimated HPGR performance due to the large amount of fines generated. The -75 ¦m efficiency factor and F50/P50 reduction ratio interpolation methods both give a fairer measure because they better take into account the amount of fines generated by HPGR. The results show that the relative comminution efficiencies of the three multi-pass HPGR circuits tested differ by as much as 22%, providing insights as how to best employ HPGR in a comminution circuit. The most energy efficient of the circuits tested was a three-pass HPGR circuit with a 1.0 m diameter roll on the first pass in closed circuit with an 8 mm screen followed by a second and third pass in a 0.25 m roll.

Tyre costs constitute 20-40 per cent of the operating cost of large haulage trucks, and tyre pressure maintenance is an important factor in minimizing costs.In the past, control over the hot (built-up) pressures of earthmover tyres has been inaccurate and inconsistent because it has not been possible, in a practical way, to measure the tyre's contained air temperature.A method for measuring this contained air temperature has now been devised using a bi-metallic probe thermometer inserted through the valve stem. Using these measurements in conjunction with a pressuretemperaturechart drawn up using the general gas equation, very accurate control over hot tyre pressures is now possible.

Detrital gold in the Greymouth-Hokitika area has been won from: (a) gravel of the Pliocene Old Man Group, (b) glacial outwash gravel of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (c) raised shoreline deposits of Middle and Late Quaternary age, (d) deposits resulting from the erosion of (a) to (c). The source of the gold was probably widely dispersed quartz veins in great thicknesses of greywacke and low-grade schist eroded from east of the Alpine Fault, with a contribution from veins in Greenland Group greywacke in the south. At times of high interglacial and post-glacial sea level, gold was concentrated along marine shorelines, and subsequent progressive uplift has resulted in a set of sub-parallel beach leads up to 100 m above present sea level. During glaciations, gold was concentrated in outwash streams close to moraines, especially where ice forming one moraine penetrated and destroyed an older one. Worked deposits in the Old Man Group may also be associated with glaciation. Apart from workings that are essentially extensions of past workings, significant new prospects may depend on inferences as to where prospective deposits are completely obscured by younger ones.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.
