The smelter building at Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, Iran, houses two reverberatory furnaces and five Pierce-Smith converters. Under normal operating conditions SO2 emissions fill the building, posing a major health problem for all workers in the building, and reducing their ability to maintain the plant. The converter fume extraction system was analysed using plant measurements, engineering modelling of the entire system and CFD modelling of the extraction hoods. By applying fundamental engineering concepts, a user-interactive computer program was developed that enabled plant engineers and operators to gain a detailed understanding of the system. In conjunction with plant measurements, the model quantified the amount of inleakage throughout the system, identifying it as a significant contributor to the poor extraction performance. Furthermore, it enabled investigation of the effects of hood gates, converters on line, hood dampers, flue insulation, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) operation, and inclusion of an acid plant. The model gave unprecedented insight into the operation of a counterintuitive buoyancy-driven extraction system.

To cope with varying raw material qualities and increasing prices for energy, a more frequent and accurate monitoring of the processing of iron ore became the focus in sinter plant operations. Traditionally, quality control in iron producing industries has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry or the analysis of the elemental composition. The mineralogy of a sinter that defines the properties and behaviour in the blast furnace is often not frequently monitored. One fast method to analyse the mineralogical composition of iron sinter, raw mixtures and iron ores is X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recently statistical methods such as similarity analysis or partial least square regression (PLSR) in combination with XRD raw data has become more and more popular in handling large amounts of data and correlating process-relevant parameters directly with an XRD measurement. PLSR can be used to correlate process parameters directly from the XRD pattern without investigating the mineral content. Hidden information that is present in the measurement but not determined with traditional methods can be used to improve the characterisation of the analysed materials.CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2017. Mining deep orebodies is increasingly becoming the norm as the ‘easy’ orebodies are depleted. Deep ore mining requires significant ventilation and cooling infrastructure to not only meet regulatory requirements for air quality but also to achieve acceptable workplace temperatures with the higher strata rock temperatures and increased auto-compression. At the same time, advances in battery equipment technology are turning the possibility of a battery powered fleet into reality. The switch from a diesel fleet to a battery powered fleet offers several positive opportunities for the design and operation of a deep mine.The potential to reduce ventilation and cooling requirements due to battery powered equipment results in significant cost savings for mine development and infrastructure. Battery powered fleets are not subject to the same dilution requirements associated with diesel fleets thus allowing lower ventilation rates. At the low ventilation volumes possible with a battery powered fleet, surface refrigeration plants are limited with respect to the amount of cooling that can be delivered to the workface. Considerations for calculating the optimum air flow and cooling requirements are presented. Considerations for locating the refrigeration plant are also discussed. An elongate belt containing granodiorite stocks with associated stockwork molybdenum mineralisation in west Nelson is correlated with the I-type Separation Point Suite of mid Cretaceous age. Trace element characteristics of the 'Mo-granites', and the Separation Point Batholith strongly suggest a primitive, subcrustal origin for these granitoids, by partial melting of oceanic basaltic crust or upper mantle material in a subduction zone. They were emplaced in the upper crust without undergoing significant differentiation or contamination by sialic crust. Molybdenum, which is at levels of approximately 5 ppm in unaltered granite, is not significantly reduced in altered (but unmineralised) granite. This suggests the metallisation has a magmatic, subcrustal source and is not derived by hydrothermal leaching of upper crustal rocks or the granitic host rocks. Geochemistry of the 'Mo-granite' belt, in particular low K2O, calc-alkali to calcic Peacock Index, high Sr and TiO2, and low Rb, Nb and F, suggest classification as calcic granitoids similar to those which host porphyry copper deposits, indicating grades of mineralisation are likely to be low.

With a price slowly rising above US$35 per ounce gold became a mineral worthy of prospecting and mining endeavour in the early to mid 1970s. Fortune therefore appeared to smile onNew Zealand with its favourable geological environment for gold and past record of major gold production from both hard rock and placer deposits. This was a particularly welcome development as the post war years, including both the base metal exploration boom of 1967/1971 (which produced major nickel, iron and bauxite mines in Australia) and the earlier period of uranium exploration failed to produce any mines in New Zealand with the exception of the small Tui Mine and iron sand mining. Whilst hard rock mining now appears imminent it is 15 years further along the track since the 1967/1971 exploration boom and eight years since the upsurge in prospecting for gold in 1978. New Zealand still has no hard rock base or precious metal mining. This is not for want of proven or potential gold mining situations for these clearly exist at Waihi, Monowai Reef, Golden Cross, MacRaes Flat and elsewhere.

The Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit, located in the East Tianshan mountains in the eastern section of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is the largest and economically most important porphyry Cu deposit in Xinjiang, China. It contains ~3 Mt of copper at an average grade of 0.46 per cent Cu and 0.2 g/t Au, with significant amounts of Mo and Ag. The deposit is mainly hosted in the Carboniferous Qi’eshan Group and plagiogranite porphyry, and is controlled by faults that are east–west-, north-west- and north-east-trending. Ore minerals in the Tuwu-Yandong deposit are dominated by pyrite, chalcopyrite and molybdenite, with minor bornite, chalcocite, magnetite, sphalerite and galena. Gangue minerals are mainly composed of quartz, sericite, chlorite, epidote, anhydrite, gypsum, muscovite, biotite, phosphorite, sphene, dolomite, actinolite, barite, albite and calcite. Based on the megascopic and microscopic textural relationships and mineral assemblages, five stages of hydrothermal alteration and hypogene mineralisation are recognized in the Tuwu-Yandong Cu deposit: the potassic stage, propylitic stage, phyllic stage, late veins stage and supergene stage. Suddenly, mining has been thrust into the limelight. It has a large image that casts its shadow over New Zealand. Is it any wonder that resistance has heightened and that an almost unprepared populous is currently struggling to protect the very land they hold dear. Next to the atomic bomb, mining has the demonstrated power to massively change the land and its side effects can pollute many miles beyond the operation. During the past year, New Zealand concern over the possible effects of the mining proposals has become acute. This was specially so in the areas of special environmental quality, such as the Coromandel, and here a very unhappy situation has arisen.

During the past Two years in reef gold mining, "indicators" have received great attention at the hands at the Victorian gold seekers. Many years ago, what was caned the" indicator lode," was struck in Ballarat East, on the course of which extremely rich deposits of gold were discovered but as to its being a .qeneral experience in reefs or leaders no one ever dreamed. Now, however, we find that these "indicators" are frequently to be met with, though they differ very much in different localities, making it, therefore, a difficult matter for other than a careful minel' to follow them. The necessity of following "indicators" for the purpose of developing gold is now recognized, and the policy of following them up has been attended with much success in this field. In the case of Messrs Shaw and Sons, at Wedderburn, those gentlemen began to work on an "indicator" here five years ago, and immediately thereafter more by accident than anything else they being at that time inexperienced as regards "indicators " came upon gold bearing quartz, which continued payable so long as the" indicator" aud the stone were in conjunction with each other, but as soon as they parted company the stone ceasedto be of any value then, by following the" indicator," as the latter intersected fresh bodies of stone they proved again more or less payable, until a fortnight or so ago the Messrs. Shaw turned out 4 tons of stone, which yielded £1,825, with also profitable workingup to the present moment. Where they are now working is a mile north of their original find thus proving that "indicators" travel considerable distances and have something to do with the gold deposits found in reefs. On the direct course of Shaw's "indicator," as high as hundreds of ozs to the ton was obtained from the stone but, just a few inches from either side in the same" leader," not a colour could be got. Whatever the cause-whether by electricity or some unknown force in nature-the gold is found on the course of these" indicators" and nowhere else, and-as each of the Victorian Government Geologists admit-their value to the gold-seeker as a means of leading to' gold cannot be over-estimated.

The Gippsland Basin is unique in Australia in that it is a major resource based industry centre within a sensitive and special environmental context supplying Melbourne, a major urban/industrial environment with most of its energy 'on-line'. The environmental effects of the supply systems are generally local and mostly affect only those who are directly or indirectly dependent on the upstream systems. The major urban metropolis which is served remains largely unaware of the environmental impacts of the system upon which it is dependent, except when specific attention is drawn to them as in the case of the Latrobe Valley Outfall, algal blooms in the Gippsland Lakes, etc. This paper discusses the environmental context within which the energy industries operate, the environmental legislative framework which applies, the likely environmental impacts and some solutions. The energy resources of the Gippsland Basin occur in an area where the physical environment exhibits a wide variety of inherent energy states in its physical and biological regimes. The off-shore regions of the oil and gas platforms has to be able to withstand the wind and wave energy generated in a shallow sea in a confined waterway lying athwart the main current and climatic stream. The coastline includes the delicately balanced quiescent environments of Corner Inlet with its 'wilderness' tourism industry and the powerful surf and long shore drift and dunes of Ninety Mile Beach.

There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

The leaching of Tellness (Norway) ilmenite concentrate in hydrochloric acid and mixed aqueous HCl-alcohol solutions at boiling temperatures was investigated. It was found that the alcohols methanol, ethanol and ethylene glycol all substantially increased the leach rate and in the case of methanol and ethanol this was achieved at lower boiling temperatures compared with aqueous HC.

Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in Fine Grinding of Copper Sulfide Minerals Using a Pilot-Scale Stirred Media Mill - IsaMill The mineral liberation size of run of mine ores has dramatically reduced over recent years. As a result, the demand for fine grinding which is the most energy-intensive form of grinding has markedly increased in the minerals industry. Furthermore, the fine grinding costs increase exponentially with decreasing product particle size. As a result of the increased energy requirement for fine grinding, it is desirable to optimise fine grinding processes such as stirred media milling (ie IsaMill) to enhance energy efficiency, throughput and the product fineness. In the present study, the influence of slurry rheology, grinding media type and grinding media-to-feed size ratio on energy efficiency in a pilot-scale IsaMill was investigated under certain industrially relevant pulp processing conditions. It was shown that a critical rheological state existed, below which the energy required to achieve an 80 per cent passing (ie P80) 20 ¦m product size was unaffected by shear rheology (ie apparent viscosity and shear yield stress) whilst above which the grinding energy required increased dramatically with increasing shear rheology. Colorado River sand (3.35 mm) showed higher energy efficiency than MT1 ceramic media (2.5 mm) for a target P80 of 20 ¦m in the solids concentration range of 38 to 55 per cent by weight, but the former experienced more than four times the wear rate of the later. The high wear rate of the Colorado River sand may be due to its much lower hardness. For feeds with an 80 per cent passing (ie F80) 70 to 110 ¦m, 2.0 or 2.5 mm MT1 media appeared to be more energy efficient than 3.5 mm MT1 media whilst a media-to-feed size ratio of 41 to 53 is applicable for ~50 ¦m (ie F80) feeds for efficient grinding.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

Extraction of copper from a chalcopyrite concentrate by means of a cupric chloride leach is described. Initially the concentrate is mixed with sulphur in a 9: 1 ratio, and heated to 350-400°C. This converts the chalcopyrite into more readily soluble sulphides, while the iron rejected from the chalcopyrite is transformed to pyrite, which is insoluble in the leach solution employed. A two-stage countercurrent leach using a leach solution of 1 M cupric chloride, 3.5 M sodium chloride, and 1 M hydrochloric acid extracts 98 per cent of the copper, if conducted at 105°C. Iron extraction is relatively low, the mole ratio of iron to copper extracted being 0.17, compared to 1.0 for unreacted chalcopyrite. After dissolution, copper can be recovered by electrolysis, cupric chloride leach solution being regenerated at the anode.Electrolytic power requirement is low, being approximately 0.5 kWh per kg of copper. The sulphur and, most of the iron entering as feed are rejected from the process in the form of pyrite, which remains in the leach residue.

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.
