Granulation of iron ore fines into robust granules is critical to successful sintering and blast furnace operations in iron and steelmaking. Iron and steelmakers desire iron ore granules with high strength, uniform size distribution and low fuel consumption to enhance efficient sintering operation. Unlike hematite ore, magnetite concentrates do not granulate easily at low binder dosage to yield coarser granules due to the absence of nucleus particles. This motivates the present study to harness the complementary properties of hematite ore to enhance granulation of magnetite concentrates via blending. The current state-of-the-art in hematite and magnetite blend granulation is reviewed, along with granule property limitations. Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

There is currently a worldwide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow characteristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for determining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0.0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦C - 319¦C. Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physicochemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage. Apparent viscosity increased sharply with increase in solids concentration and suspensions at higher concentration behaved as non Newtonian liquids. Viscosity decreased with increase in temperature; rate of decrease slowed down with increase in temperature.

The train haulage system being designed for PT Freeport Indonesia’s Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) will be located within the mine at an elevation of almost 3000 m above sea level on the west side of the island of Papua, Indonesia. The developing block cave is beneath the active Grasberg Open Pit and will transport 160 000 t of ore per day from multiple chute galleries to the underground crushing plants. The design entails 28 km of rail and 119 ore chutes, which will be brought online over the course of ten years.The train haulage system will be driverless and fully automated. Sequentially, the system includes remote controlled rock breakers at the top of the chute grizzlies, followed by remote controlled chute loading of the trains, then autonomous train haulage and autonomous unloading. An overhead catenary system (OCS) will power the locomotives, which are equipped with on-board batteries to drive through the loading and unloading sections. Service locomotives with drivers move material-laden freight cars in and out of the service shaft, destined for workshops, the magazine and batch plants. Service locomotives are also used for haulage level maintenance. Highly reliable and redundant control and communications systems are required to manage 12 trains in simultaneous operation.This paper provides an overview of the train haulage system’s technical complexities and the associated support systems interactions. Amongst representative men directing alluvial mining of erations in Victoria, some difference of opinion exists as to the best system of working the deep leads. The developmental operations of shaft-sinding, extending a reef drive, partially watering and rising up into the wash dirt are practically the same on all fields but subsequent mining is continued either on the Chiltern and Rulberglen or Ballarat systems, the latter being referred to by the Chiltern and Rutherglen miners as the "down country" system. In the former, the leading wash and cross drives are lept from 300 to 500 feet ahead of the reef drive, and in the latter the reverse method keeping the reef drive well ahead of all wash workingsis adopted.In the majority of alluvial mines in the southern and western fields, the initial work of defining the course of the lead is costly, owing to the thick superincumbent layers of hard basalt, to bore which costs from 9/- to 15/· per foot. Unfortunately large sums of money have been wasted in this work, owing to a want of care and knowledge in the selection of bore sites, and improper recording of the strata pierced, thus handicapping alluvial mining and bringing boring operations...

Newmont Waihi Operations is participating in the initiation of a community liaison forum in association with the local district council. The objective is to provide a forum for the free and regular exchange of ideas, concerns and information, and through improved communication seek to achieve a more comprehensive set of solutions to community, operating and closure issues associated with Martha Mine. A similar liaison forum has been operated on two previous occasions during earlier phases of the present mine's operation. This paper deals with the practical aspects of setting up a liaison forum to act as an effective conduit between regulators, mine operators, local businesses and the community. The mechanisms and procedures for identifying community issues and concerns are dealt with. The actions and structures required to ensure effective ongoing community 'buy in' at all levels are discussed. Corporate philosophies are addressed. Specific examples from Martha Mine, Waihi New Zealand will be used to illustrate the paper. This will include a brief explanation of previous and current community issues, Newmont Waihi's operations both at Martha Mine and the proposed Favona underground mine, and the practical issues involved in setting up a liaison forum.

Pressure drops were measured in a column packed with glass spheres and wax particles, both in random and preferential distributions. Variables investigated included wax content, gas flow rates, and temperatures.It is shown that for random distribution of wax, pressure drop is exponentially related to wax content above the melting point of wax and that below this it increases with increasing gas rate and temperature.For preferred distribution of wax the highest increase in pressure drop is obtained with horizontal distribution of wax and the least with vertical distribution.Comparison with operating blast furnace data and application of results to practice are also included.

The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

Cadmium occurs in the Broken Hill Lode essentially as a camouflaged element, substituting diadochically for zinc in the sphalerite.Analyses of a series of zinc concentrate flotation products, prepared from samples of ore taken at intervals throughout the developed lengths of the several orebodies forming the lode, have revealed a pattern in the distribution of cadmium relative to zinc. This pattern appears to reflect the temperature and order of deposition of the several orebodies, and the direction of movement of the mineralizing solutions.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation into the distribution of cadmium in the several orebodies of the Broken Hill lode was undertaken by the Mineragraphic Section. of C.S.I.R.O. in conjunction with the Broken Hill Geological Research Committee, as part of a study of Broken Hill mineralization.It arose from the examination of cadmium and zinc assays supplied by Mr. T. A. Read, Chief Metallurgist of the Broken Hill South Ltd.; of experimental zinc concentrates prepared from localized samples of the No, 2 and No. 3 orebodies in the Broken Hill South Mine. These assays suggested that the two orebodies were characterized by distinctive ZnjCd ratios.In view of the possible sigmficanc'e of such a difference, comparable data were sought from each of the other mines. The necessary samples of ore were collected by the geological staffs of the several mines. The preparation of separate zinc concentrates and lead concentrates from these samples, and their assaying, was conducted by Mr. Evan Hardy, for the North Broken Hill Mine, and its assodated leases, and by Mr. D., Swan, under the direction of Dr. J. This investigation was planned to determine:1. The precipitation-hardening properties of the copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys; and2. The influence of arsenic and bismuth, singly and together, on the mechanical properties of these alloys.It was carried out in conjunction with an investigation, previously published in these Prooeedings on "The Influence of Various Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Copper containing a small percentage of Bismuth," and also formed part of a study of the influence of bismuth, nickel and phosphorus on the properties of commercial arsenical-copper.The first part of the present investigation arose out of a discovery some years ago of precipitation-hardening in phosphorus-deoxidized coppernickel boiler tubes, containing approximately 2% nickel and 0·03% phosphorus, supplied to an Australian Railways Department. At that time there was little information available on precipitation-hardening in copperrich copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys, but at the end of 1935 a short paper on the subject was published by E. C. Rollason and T. G. Bamford(2) and at the beginning of 1940 a comprehensive account was published by D. K. Crampton, H. L. Burghoff and J. T. Stacy.(3) Although the investigation carried, out independently by the present author was not as comprehensive as that of Crampton, Burghoff and Stacy, the results are in agreement with those of the American as well as of the British authors; hence, only a summary of this aspect of the work is needed here to establish a basis for a study of the influence of bismuth and arsenic.PREPARATION OF TEST PIECESAll alloys were melted under charcoal in plumbago crucibles in an oil-fired furnace and were poured out of contact with air into oil-dressed moulds to give billets either 7· 5 in. long X 0.83 in. diam. X 1·3 lb. weight or 12 in. long X 1·125 in. diam. X 3·3 lb. weight depending on requirements (the larger size was used, for example, in establishing the annealing characteristics of the precipitation-hardening alloys). The raw materials were electrolytic copper of the composition described in the previous paper(I) 6% copper-arsenic, 14% copper-phosphorus, 1:7% copper-bismuth, and Mond nickel in the form of "shot." The method of producing test pieces from these billets and the annealing treatments ana tests to which the pieces were subjected have been described in the previous paper.

The early records of hydraulic elevator and bucket ladder dredging in the Clutha River system indicate the success of that era of alluvial gold mining in Otago. This paper briefly reviews parameters of depth and gold grade for alluvial operations. The application of dragline technology is proposed for the economic removal of overburden to target the deeper alluvial gold areas which remain in the Otago region.

Wangaloa Coal Mine opened in 1945, and by the time of its closure in 1989, had produced 750 000 tonnes of coal and disturbed an area of 75 ha. The original mining licence required land rehabilitation to exotic forestry, however the current owner, Solid Energy, has worked with Crown Minerals and local councils to write a new rehabilitation objective. The site is now being stabilised and replanted with native species, and may be available for public use before the coal mining licence expires in 2007. Site discharge permits expire in 2017, and by that time, it is anticipated that discharge water chemistry will be similar to background levels. MWH are currently contracted for management of the mine rehabilitation project. The Kaitangata coal unit mined at Wangaloa is sulfurous lignite with associated pyrite. Kaitangata coal contains 3.2 wt per cent sulfur, which is higher than most New Zealand coals. Initial analyses at Wangaloa indicate low pH (2.56.2) values in soil, groundwater and surface waters as a result of acid rock drainage (ARD) processes, leading to increased metal mobility and challenging conditions for vegetation. Pilot studies indicate pinus radiata needles contain up to 67 mg/kg boron, and elevated As, Cu and Zn concentrations in surface waters. The main lake at the site has a pH of approximately 4.9, despite lime dosage in 2002. There is a real need for a complete geochemical model of the Wangaloa coal mine. Such a model could be applied to similar restoration projects, and would assist by pinpointing geochemical processes and toxic metal relationships most harmful to the receiving environments. Using this model, rehabilitation in the future will be targeted and more efficient. This project is part of a larger scheme to characterise and model the Wangaloa mine site restoration, including waters, soil, vegetation, geology and invertebrates.

Whereas mine reconciliation is a well-established month-end process for most modern mining operations, the resource sector has yet to endorse uniform reporting factors against which model accuracy and metal recovery can be formally assessed. Logically, any comprehensive reconciliation framework should facilitate comparison between period reserve, mine and mill and production figures. Historically, Parker’s F Series ratios (Parker, 2012) are often used in some form by mine operators, although they are rarely shared externally, as formal definitions have yet to be accepted. This paper presents a structural extension to the reconciliation process, wherein resource ratios (R Series factors) are used to quantify the long-term impact of the information effect, together with dilution and ore loss. A case study from the El Limón Guajes (ELG) Mine Complex in Mexico is used to demonstrate how an R Factor Series can be implemented to facilitate operation optimisation, over and above conventional F Series reconciliation treatments. This approach is applicable to any mining operation.

Structurally- controlled deep leaching processes have removed vast quantities of carbonate from a substantial portion of the "silica-dolomite" enclosing the 500 copper orebody. Mine drainage subsequently allowed free access of air to the porous environment created and oxidation of sulphides commenced. During the mIne development stage the exothermic and temperature-dependent nature of these hydrolysis reactions resulted in a slow general elevation of ground temperatures. and levels of 90 - lOO°C were attained in restricted moist sulphide-rich areas.With the advent of production and extensive use of explosives, the oxidation processes were locally raised to new levels of activity. Direct interaction of explosives and sulphides in favourable conditions caused temperature rises to above 260 C. Above this point the dry oxidation of sulphides in air was initiated and rapid escalation to the vicinity of 800 C has been known to occur in isolated cases.Ground reactivity is a function of the complex interrelationship of several controlling factors and no simple index exists.Control techniques are presently aimed at prevention of temperature rises in the range 100 -260 C. Inhibition of the rapid dry oxidation processes above 260 C is difllcult and current efforts have met with only partial success.
