B. H. Bergstrom (Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co., Milwaukee)—In reading this article, it was difficult to follow through the example given as a starting point in the derivation of the theoretical equation which relates ball size to feed size. A discussion with F. C. Bond led to the following clarification: Bond postulates that "the breaking force exerted by a ball varies ... as the cube of its diameter . . ." and that the force in pounds per square inch required to break a particle varies ... as its diameter squared." He concludes: "It follows that when a l-in. ball breaks a 1-mm particle, a 2-in. ball will break a 4-mm particle, and a 3-in. ball a 9-mm particle." The above example can be true only for a different set of assumptions. Since the first assumption is apparently true, it is the second that must be revised. The second assumption should read that the breaking force required to break a particle varies as its diameter to the 3/2 power. This relationship was derived in the next paragraph of the article.

.I. S. Huckaba (Western Machinery Co., Spokane, Wash.)—It has been my pleasure and privilege to be able to follow this work with the H.M.S. pilot plant very closely. This has been a very thorough and painstaking piece of work and will be of great value to the dense-media operators and manufacturers. Unfortunately time was not available to make an accurate comparison between this pilot plant and the commercial plant at Bellingham Coal Mines, both plants having Wemco drum separators. Briefly I would like to point out what I consider the most interesting finding of this work. Capacity: Very good results were obtained at a feed mte of 5.2 tons per hr in a 30-in diam by 24-in. long drum separator. The maximum capacity of this drum is not known but it is something over 5.2 tons per hr for the available area of 2.08 sq ft. W. H. BLAUVELT (author's reply to discussion *).-The prevention of smoke from byproduct-oven plants is not as simple as would appear from Mr. Moss's statement. All well designed byproduct-oven plants are equipped with ample exhauster capacity, and the suction on the ovens is controlled by highly sensitive pressure governors that control the pressure within a fraction of a millimeter. Of course, this apparatus can get out of order, causing the batteries to smoke, but this does not often happen. As stated by Mr. Thompson, the smoke produced is made almost entirely during the time of charging the ovens, when they are cut off from the hydraulic main. The amount of smoke that escapes at this time is extremely small, compared with -the amount produced by a beehive-oven plant, but the mechanical difficulties in preventing any escape of smoke at charging time are considerable. The amenability of a given vanadium ore to any given treatment depends largely on the mineralogic combinations of vanadium in the ore. Quantitative data on vanadium mineralogy provide not only an objective basis for selection of proper treatment, but also may eliminate many time-consuming amenability studies whose results are empirical, at best. Vanadium is distributed through the interstices of mineralized sandstone ores in the form of oxidized vanadates, reduced oxides, and silicates. Oxidized vanadates, e.g., carnotite, tyuyamunite, etc., are most readily beneficiated by simple acid leaching. Reduced oxides are more slowly solubilized, but relatively amenable to most acid treatments. The layered silicates, roscoelite, mixed layered mica-montmorillonite, and chlorite, are least amenable to most acid extractions, and constitute an assemblage of vanadium- bearing clays that are common to many sedimentary deposits. Vanadium is combined principally as layered silicates in the clay fractions of many sandstone ores. Mineralogic studies in this paper are largely confined to clay minerals, and to their amenability characteristics in low pH liquors.

The Oregon School of Mines Society held its regular monthly meeting on the evening of October 23. This meeting was an informal reunion at which members gave accounts of personal experiences during the last three months. Many members of both junior and senior classes answered their country's call to arms and so did not return to college. The senior class is particularly well represented in the Army, as two men hold lieutenant's commissions and a third is already in France with a hospital unit. The junior class has also contributed men to various branches of the service. Plans for the regular meetings include discussions by members and lectures by outside authorities oil mining and allied topics. These meetings are open to the lower classes and all others interested. The Oregon School of Mines Society, composed of members of the junior and senior classes, has, joined with the sophomore and freshman relining students in purchasing a Liberty Bond under the name of the Miners' Club of 0. There were present eleven Directors, the Institute's Legal Counsel, the Secretary, the Assistant Secretary, and twenty-three guests. The Report of the Committee on Nominations (listed elsewhere) was presented and ordered to take the statutory course. The appointment of a Committee on Mine Taxation was approved. An Advertising Manager was appointed. E. G. Spilsbury and A. S. Dwight were appointed as representatives of this Institute on the Franco-American Engineering Committee. The Transactions were presented to the University of Louvain, and the monthly Bulletin to the French Technical Index. Permission was given to publish in full the argument of William H. Shockley on simplified spelling. A committee was appointed to have charge of the publication of the Raymond Memorial Volume. There were elected 70 members, 15 associates, and 1 junior associate. Three members were reinstated and the resignations of two were ac-cepted. The clues of 10 members who had been in active service with the allied armies were remitted. An extension of time for the payment of dues was granted to the 11 members.

Because of unfavorable wetting conditions much residual oil is left when a porous material is Pushed by water. Methods suggested to change reservoir wetting to improve oil displncernrnt efficiency are generally expensitlr. The present 1aborator.y study was undertaken to gain an under.standinx of the factors which determine reservoir wettability, arid to find out if oil displacement efficiency might be improved by a wettahility change accomplished at low cost in on oil reservoir. Contact angle measurements were made on mineral surfaces using sevc.r~zl sets of reservoir oil and water samp1es. Results of the contact angle studies suggest that reservoir wetta-hility may he primarily determined by natural surface-active substances present in the reservoir fluids. The effect of changing sa1inity and pH of the water phase was studied. The re.suits suggest that gross changes in preferential wettability might be acc~o~npli.shed by injection of water containing simple chernicnls to alter pH or salinity in the reservoir. Such treatment could he much less expensive than injection of commercial surface-active agents. Waterflood tests have also been made using synthetic cores and oil and water having wening characteristics similar to those of reservoir fluids. Cores initially oil-wet were flooded in such a way that they were made prefermtial1y water-wct by the advancing flood water. This reversal in preferential wettability achieved greater oil displacement efficiency than when either oil-wet or water-wet conditions were maintained throughout the flood. For the systems studied, the higher the oil viscosity the greater the percentage improvement obtained over conventional waterflood recovery. This suggests that a flooding process making use of wettability-reversal may extend the oil viscosity range over which water flooding is attractive. Because a precise adjustment of reservoir wettability does not seem to be required, and because altering the pH or salinity in some reservoirs may be inexpensive, it appears that a waterflooding process employing wet-[ability-reversal could find .succesful field application. I NTRODUCTION The efficiency with which water will displace oil from a porous material is related to the nature of the capillary forces present. These in turn are controlled by the preferential wetting of the solid by the two fluids. Because of unfavorable wetting conditions, 30 per cent or more of the original oil in place may remain unrecovered in that portion of a reservoir flushed by water. This paper is concerned with the possibility of improving waterflood oil displacement efficiency by alterations in the wettability of the porous material. A laboratory study was made to gain a better understanding of the factors which control reservoir wettability, and to determine if the oil displacement efficiency could be improved by some inexpensive means of manipulating wettability of the porous medium. Contact angle measurements were made with several natural and synthetic oil, water and solid systems (1) to obtain a better understanding of how to duplicate reservoir wettability in the laboratory, and (2) to discover possible means for changing preferential wettability of natural reservoir systems. Flooding tests were also made in synthetic systems to determine if oil displacement efficiency could be improved by those wettability manipulations suggested by the contact angle measurements. Based on these studies a possible method for improving waterflood oil displacement efficiency is presented. This method involves causing an originally oil-wet porous material to become preferentially water-wet during the course of a water flood. The purpose of this paper is to present results of the laboratory studies. THEORY Rock surfaces in some oil reservoirs are believed to be covered with a firmly attached bituminous or other organic coating. Such surfaces would be preferentially oil-wet in the presence of both oil and water, regardless of composition of reservoir fluids. Other reservoirs are believed to contain rock surfaces not permanently coated with such materials, and which would be preferentially wet by water in the presence of water and oil free from surface-active substances. However, when the reservoir fluids do contain certain natural surface-active materials in sufficient quantity, rock surfaces acquire a degree of preferential oil wettability caused by adsorption of these natural surface-active materials on the solid. The equilibrium amount of these materials adsorbed per unit surface area is believed to depend upon their concentration in the bulk liquid phases.

Since many of the easily mined, continuous, thick coal seams in the Appalachian Region have been exhausted, new exploration and mining is being directed toward less continuous seams that are under more cover and are more difficult to mine. The direct results of this are that more money and time and more expertise and data are needed to plan and open new coal mines today. It is also becoming apparent that the old methods of assimilating and preparing information needed for mine planning are inadequate to meet the needs of today's modern mining engineer, especially in the areas of data gathering, storage, retrieval, preparation, and interpretation. The system described here allows assimilation of old and new core data in a relatively quick, accurate, and efficient manner. The system is a set of computer assisted procedures consisting of the following four basic steps: 1) raw data collection, computer input, storage, and graphic preparation, 2) geologic profile correlation and establishment of seam continuity, 3) computerized data posting of important seam parameters, 4) geologic and planimetric analysis for mine planning.

NOT much activity has been evident during the past year in the establishment of co-operative scholarships but the interest among the coal-mining companies is more pronounced than ever. This is apparent from the replies received to a letter sent out by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to over 120 coalmine operating officials. With that letter was forwarded a bulletin issued by the school of mineral industries of The Pennsylvania State College entitled ?Industrial Scholarships ? a Partnership of Industry and Education.? In that circular was outlined the need for trained men in the war and postwar world, and particularly as such demands pertain to the growth of the mineral industries.

Plans for the Petroleum Division during the ensuing year are in process of development, in contemplation of the usual fall meetings in the Mid-Continent and California areas, as well as the annual meeting to be held in New York in February, 1936. Houston, Texas has been suggested as the place for the Mid-Continent fall meeting, the exact date to be announced shortly. During the past year, the Division's technical programs, as in former years, have emphasized the wide fields of engineering endeavor in the petroleum industry yet remaining for more thorough investigation and discussion. An effort has been made to bring an international interest into the proceedings of the Division by inviting the participation of prominent foreign technologists. This viewpoint should promote a continuation in 1935 of past high standards, afford a more thorough understanding of problems throughout the membership, and maintain the Institute's position among the various technical organizations functioning particularly in the oil-producing and refining areas. In the list of subjects proposed for the fall meetings is the problem of estimating petroleum reserves. Various factors requiring study will include productive sand volume, porosity, average permeability, saturation, and types of recovery. Research papers are proposed dealing with energy consumption per unit of oil recovered, reservoir pressure or energy loss relationship to the usual volumetric method of estimation, and the study of oil and gas segregation within the reservoir. Other subjects tentatively suggested include new casing practice in relationship to wells producing from several productive zones, progress in lifting methods, repressuring, advanced methods in drilling economies, and the economics of conservation. Although the threat of overproduction yet remains, to a lesser degree than during the past few years, intensive activity is now being directed towards the discovery of new petroleum reserves. This situation undoubtedly will influence, in some considerable degree, the channels through which technical activities will be directed. A continuation of the commendable work on production statistics for the various oil-producing states and foreign countries has been effected. The usual papers dealing with the general economics of the industry will be reserved for the annual New York Meeting. The Stabilization Committee maintains its membership of nationwide authorities, and interest is manifest in new developments to meet the changing requirements of the industry.

The first systematic attempt of the National Museum to gather material representing the economic geology and metallurgy of the country was made in connection with the Centennial Exhibition. The department may be considered as having originated then, althongh it was not formally inaugurated until December, 1882. Previous to the Centennial, all the illustrations of economic geology had been included in the mineral collection, and the illustrations of metallurgy were so very few that they had also been included with the minerals. When the museum began its collections for the Centennial, the subject of the mineral resources of tile United States was placed in the hands of Professor Wm. P. Blake, who was eminently fitted to undertake the work by his experience at various international exhibitions and his extensive acquaintance with the mining industry of the country. Professor Blake prepared a broad and exhaustive plan for this purpose, and the very large collection shown at Philadelphia was well calculated to set forth the vast mineral wealth of the country. The history of the department proper may conveniently be divided into three periods : first, the formative period, during which the Centennial material was mainly administered upon, ending Jnly 1, 1884, with the beginning of the preparation for the New Orleans Exposition; second, the New Orleans Exposition period, from July 1, 1884, to June 30, 1887, during which the collections for the New Orleans Exposition were made, exhibited at New Orleans, returned to Washington, and installed permanently in the museum; third, the southwest-court period, from July 1, 1887, to October 1, 1889, during which the collections were arranged in the southwest court of the museum.

This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. Few subjects in iron metallurgy and steelmaking have caused so much discussion and have resulted in so many divergent and partly contradictory statements as the theory of the distribution of sulphur between molten iron and slag. An interesting survey of the different points of view is given by Grant and Chipman.1 Grant and Chipman themselves conclude in their paper that, at least in the open hearth and electric steel furnaces, the governing reaction is a simple distribution like: FeS steel ? FeS alas [Ia] and MnS steel ? MnS alas [Ib] They conclude that no significant reaction takes place according to the more classical scheme: FeS steel + CaO slag ? FeOslag + CaS slag [2a] This is the reaction which is regarded by most investigators as the primary sulphur reaction in the blast furnaces, where it is accompanied by the reaction with carbon: FeO slag + C ? Fe + CO [2b] The writer suggests an alternative to the reactions mentioned above. It is the opinion of the writer that the a priori assumption of defined molecular compounds being present in molten steel as well as in molten slag, has retarded rather than promoted a solution of the sulphur problem. As for the constituents of molten steel, it is taking too much for granted to mention the presence of FeS and MnS. If this infers that the melt contains diatomic molecules, the statement must be made that at least such molecules do not exist in the solid state at room temperature. Solid FeS crystallizes in the nickel-arsenide structure, and MnS (high temperature form) in the sodium-chloride structure. In these structures the sulphur is surrounded by six metal neighbors, and no molecular groups can be isolated. When sulphur is dissolved in molten steel, it is expected to maintain the same coordination number as in the solid state. We know that sulphur in steel has a certain chemical potential and a chemical activity which can be expressed by the reaction: S steel + H2 ? H2S where the activity A. is proportional to the ratio PH2S/Ph2. We know also that this activity is influenced by the presence of other constituents. For instance, there is reason to assume that carbon and silicon increase the sulphur activity and manganese decreases it. However, the exact relationship here is scarcely known, and further investigations are needed. Concerning the molten slags, if anything should be assumed a priori it would be that they are composed of ionic rather than molecular parts. There are indications of this in that solid silicates form ionic structures, and molten slags show high electric conductivity and can be electrolyzed.2 It has been claimed by Taylor and Chipman3 that their activity investigations

I have the honor to submit herewith the report of the Secretary for the year 1915 showing the principal activities of the Institute: Meetings.-The 110th Meeting, including the Annual Business Meeting, was held in New York City, Feb. 15 to 17, 1915. The full report of this meeting is given in Volume LI of the Transactions. The number of papers presented was 53, and the attendance was 357 members and guests. The 111th Meeting was held in San Francisco, Cal., Sept. 16 to 19, 1915. Sixty-eight technical papers were presented, and the attendance was over 400 members and guests. The full report of this meeting is given in the Bulletin for December, 1915. In1950 studies concerning mining and milling of the approximately 17 million tons of ore remaining at Outokumpu revealed the surface facilities for economical treatment were inadequate. The two shafts would soon be too far from the mine workings. Moreover, in spite of several extensions, mill capacity was insufficient and recoveries were not satisfactory. Therefore it was decided in 1951 to sink a new shaft and to build a new mill and auxiliary surface buildings around the shaft. The new shaft was sunk near the center of the remaining orebody, about 650 ft from the ore to the footwall side. This location placed the main part of the shaft as well as the crusher rooms and the ore bins around the lower end of the shaft in the firm and strong mica-schist.

The opening of a new large-scale beneficiation plant is always news, but the start-up of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Eagle Mills near Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula early in October is of particular interest because of the completely different type of operation being carried on at this plant. The ore boat which left Marquette, Mich. on the 3rd of October bound for the plant of Wisconsin Steel Division of International Harvester, not only carried the first output of this new mill, but also carried the first agglomerate made from the Upper Peninsula's jasper ore, the first commercial output from an updraft traveling-grate furnace, and the first large-scale commercial application of the balling disk, also called the flying saucer, to the agglomeration of an iron flotation concentrate.

PRODUCERS of building stone have had to seek new and attractive uses for their output to supplement the diminished orders for standard products. Lunar is the direct result of the need of new outlets for marble and is. probably the most ingenious and attractive type to reach the market in a quarter of a century. It is a highly translucent stone which retains the same glistening sparkle in transmitted light that marble exhibits by incident rays. This sparkle sets it apart entirely from translucencies made of glass or even onyx, alabaster, and the distinctive exceedingly fine textured calcite marbles produced in Alabama and quarried formerly in northern Vermont and Quebec.
