Discussion of the paper of CLARENCE A. WRIGHT, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 130, October, 1917, pp. 1565 to 1591. H. A. WHEELER, St. Louis, Mo.-This paper by Mr. Wright is one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies that has been made of the milling practice in the Joplin district. Mr. Wright spent about two years there, in behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri Geological Survey, and this paper, which is the result of his work, will, repay careful reading by any student of ore dressing and is invaluable to an operator in that district.

Measurements of the quantity of xanthate abstracted from mineral surfaces and put into solution by an increase in the hydroxyl ion concentration were made. A residual xanthate concentration of 59.6 ppm was found in one case at a pH of 11.8. The abstracted xanthate is capable of acting as a collector on fresh mineral surfaces under proper conditions. It was learned that as the hydroxyl ion increased and the xanthate abstracted, the coarse particles lose their floatability first. A volume weight relationship based on percentage coverage was established and seems to offer a reasonable explanation of the cause of observed results.

In conforniity with the design of the oficials of the United States Steel Corporation for the standardization of the methods employed in the sampling and analysis of all materials encountered in their various lines of manufacture, the Chemists' Committee presents this compilatioti of standard methods for the sampling and subsequent analysis of molten pig-iron. In selecting the methods, the Committee employed the same line of procedure as in former cases, viz., the careful consideration of all the methods employed in each laboratory of the Corporation, evolving therefrom the several methods herein described, the immediate adoption of which is desired. The adsorption mechanism of corn starch and its derivatives at mineral-solution interfaces was investigated by the adsorption of cationic starch, unmodified corn starch, British Gum 9084, and anionic starch on quartz and hematite. The adsorption of these starches, which decreases in the order mentioned, is dependent on the balance between the magnitude of the electrostatic interaction and the magnitude of the hydrogen bonding. There exists a critical starch concentration for both optimum flotation and flocculation conditions of iron ores, which corresponds to a point where the starch adsorption reaches a saturation coverage. Flocculation occurs due to the adsorption of starch via electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding forces and by interparticle bridging as a result of the conformation of starch molecules at the interface. The depressant property of starches and starch derivatives in flotation' and their flocculation char: acteristics in clarification and filtration2.3 have long been recognized on a wide variety of ores. The effectiveness of a starch as a depressant for iron minerals has been the subject of much investigation in recent years both in the amine flotation of siliceous gangue and in the anionic flotation of activated silica from iron ores. It has been reported that the depressant activity of starches and dextrins in the cationic flotation of quartz from hematite increases with molecular weight, branching, and number of hydroxyl groups, 1 and that the selectivity is affected by changing the configuration of starch molecules and the composition of its polar groups.4 ,5 The manner in which starches are solubilized was shown to exert a significant influence as a depressant in the anionic silica flotation, and a series of articles covering the practical aspects of flotation and flocculation have already been reported.618 Chemical modification of the starch structure, the pulp pH, the calcium ion, and the residual starch concentration were identified as some of the more important variables affecting the flotation behavior. In the flocculation of iron ores, it was noted that most starches flocculated suspensions of hematite in water but did not flocculate similar suspensions of quartz,9 and that an excessive use of starch restabilized the suspensions due presumably to protective action. 6 An admirable application of such an observation to practice may be cited in the selective flocculation and desliming in the anionic silica flotation of iron ores, which resulted in superior metallurgy and lower reagent cost. 10 From detailed adsorption measurements, Schulz'and Cooke4 established that the adsorption of starches and their derivatives depended on the types of minerals and of starches, pH, and electrolytes present. Their adsorption data and the foregoing flotation and flocculation observations suggested that an electrical interaction between starches and charged mineral surfaces might be playing a role in their adsorption process. Adsorption of organic polymers, particularly of synthetic origin, at solid-liquid interfaces has been extensively studied in recent years,' and it is realized that their adsorption mechanism is considerably more complex than that of simple ions or molecules. A polymer molecule possesses a number of functional groups, and the adsorption at a point may restrict the adsorbability of adjacent groups. The mechanism may be further complicated by the conformation of the polymer molecules which may exist as coiled spheres, helices, or extended chains as a result of intramolecular interactions among functional groups as well as intermolecular interactions with solvent molecules. The object of the present investigation was to examine the effect of the chemical modification on the adsorption characteristics of starches and starch products on quartz and hematite at several pH values, so that by correlating this information with flocculation and flotation results, adsorption mechanism of starches on mineral-solution interface may be elucidated. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS Quartz: St. Peter sand was screened at 35 mesh and the undersize was scrubbed and deslimed at a Fagergren cell. Manufacture of lightweight concrete aggregate from common shale is one of the most rapidly growing industries in the field of nonmetallic or industrial minerals. Although expanded shale" has been in use since it was developed by Stephen J. Hayde in 1917, it was not until after World War II that it became a substantial competitor with other aggregates. There are some 70 plants now producing this aggregate in the United States, approximately half of them in states west of the Mississippi River. Expanding plants throughout the U. S. are grouped around major urban centers such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Denver. Concrete made with expanded shale aggregate combines the desirable features of low weight with relatively high strength, making it especially useful in concrete block, in structural concrete for multi-story buildings and in a variety of specialized concrete products such as prestressed panels and beams, and storage tanks. As the cost of construction continues to rise, lightweight concrete will probably be used in increasing quantities because of its low cost relative to the more traditional construction materials such as wood, brick and steel

Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of quartz with oleic acid as collector and barium, calcium, aluminum, iron, and tin as activators were studied using a simple vacuum-flotation technique in glass-stoppered graduates. The detailed study of barium activation led to an interpretation based on ideal Langmuirian chemi-sorption. FLOTATION of quartz is of practical importance as something to be avoided in soap-floating many types of ores. Clean, unactivated quartz is not floated with fatty acids and soaps, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate, in the quantities normally used for flotation. However, data in the literature indicate that almost any multivalent cation will activate quartz if given an opportunity. Thus, a common problem is to prevent activation of quartz by the various inorganic cations inevitably present in flotation pulps. Wark and his coworkers1 have demonstrated the reversibility of the chemical reactions and adsorptions involved in the activation, depression, and collection of the common sulphide minerals. The procedure in much of their work was to bring a mineral surface to equilibrium with solutions of known pH, collector concentration, and activator concentration, and then to test the floatability of the mineral by contact-angle measurement. From the data, graphs were constructed with pH and reagent concentrations as coordinates. These graphs show fields of flotation and fields of nonflotation, separated by narrow transition regions whose locations are shown by so-called contact curves. From the shapes and locations of the contact curves, which roughly separate fields of flotation from fields of nonflotation, a quantitative understanding of the interaction of the reagents with each other and with the minerals often can be deduced. The study of quartz flotation to be described in this paper follows in broad lines the approach of Wark and coworkers. That is, pH, activator concentration, and collector concentration were varied to find equilibrium conditions of flotation and non- flotation, and the results are presented graphically by means of contact curves. However, instead of testing for floatability by measuring the contact angle on a polished surface, a simple vacuum flotation technique was developed and used. Purified oleic acid was the collector and terpineol the frother. Barium activation was studied in some detail, and exploratory studies were made of activation with calcium, aluminum, ferric iron, and stannic tin. Preparation of Materials Quartz: Large lumps of high-grade vein quartz were crushed dry in a cone crusher and rolls. The —20, +28-mesh portion was screened out and used in the subsequent steps. This material was passed through a high-intensity magnetic separator to discard iron, then leached twice with hot concentrated HCl and washed repeatedly with distilled water. The cleaned sand was then wet ground with porcelain balls in a porcelain pebble mill, deslimed repeatedly by settling and decantation to discard —800-mesh material, and again washed with hot HCl followed by distilled water. The resulting stock of quartz was stored under water. Chemical analysis gave 99.8 pct SiO2. Table I gives the size analysis of the quartz used for flotation tests. Calculations from these data, using shape factors given by Gaudin and Hukki9 indicate a specific surface of about 500 cm2 per g. Blank flotation tests in distilled water, and in water with added frother, showed the prepared quartz to be completely nonfloatable and thus indicated the absence of organic contamination. Oleic Acid: The preparation of oleic acid was based on fractional vacuum distillation of methyl oleate2,3 followed by regeneration of oleic acid, and finally fractional crystallization of oleic acid from acetone solutions at low temperatures." The pure oleic acid was stored in a refrigerator. The iodine number of the oleic acid was found to be 90.0 (theoretical 89.93). Oleic acid was used in the form of a dilute water solution of sodium oleate, after preliminary flotation tests showed no effects of form of addition and order of addition of reagents when an adequate conditioning time (that is, 30 min) was provided. The explosive welding of metals is dependent upon the production of a jetting action caused by the collapsing of one metal plate against another. Successful welds are generally accomplished if the yield strength of the metals is in the range of 10,000 to 90,000 psi and the sonic velocity of the metal is greater than the detonation velocity of the explosive if direct contact explosive is being used.' Should the detonation velocity exceed the velocity of sound in the metal it may still be possible to obtain the jetting action and a good weld. However, in most cases where a high detonation velocity is used complications arise because of reflected shock waves which tear the bond apart as fast as it is put together.' Explosive welding of lead presents several problems since its yield strength and sound velocity are very low. Various values have been published3-5 for the velocity of sound in lead ranging from 2000~ to 23004 m per sec. Most of the high-order explosives have detonation velocities on the order of 6000 to 8000 m per sec, which precludes their use. The dynamites have a lower detonation velocity of around 2800 m per sec which is still somewhat too high. Lower-order explosives such as ammonium nitrate (1070 m per sec) must be used to weld lead in the as-received condition if the explosives are used in direct contact. Rather than use low-order explo'sives it was decided to alter the sonic velocity of the lead. The sonic velocity is directly related to the modulus of the material according to the following expression: Fig 1—Interface of explosive weld of lead to steel. Bolling et al. 6 show that the shear modulus of lead single crystals increases from about 0.72 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 300°K to about 0.98 X1011 dynes per sq cm at 0°K, an increase of approximately 3 5 pct. This gives an increase in the sonic velocity of around 700 m per sec. Hence, the sonic velocity of lead at cryogenic temperatures is approximately equivalent to the detonation velocity of the low-order dynamites. We have obtained high-quality lead to steel explosive welds using a 40 pct dynamite in direct contact with the lead. Prior to detonation the lead was chilled with liquid nitrogen (78°K) to increase the strength and sonic velocity. Welds were made while the lead was cold. Specimen sizes were 3 by 6 in. A preset angle of 5 deg with a 0.10-in. standoff at the base was the geometrical setup used. The amount of explosive used for optimum welding of an 1/8 -in. -thick lead sheet to a steel plate was found to be 7 g per sq in. A PETN sheet explosive line wave generator was used to insure a linear detonation front through the dynamite. A photomicrograph of a lead-steel weld is shown in Fig. 1. The typical wave effect that constitutes a good explosive weld is present. When tested in shear, the weld failed in the lead, indicating that the bond is stronger than the lead base metal. Higher-order explosives were also tried without success. We believe this indicates the importance of matching the detonation velocity and the sonic velocity for successful explosive welding. Note Added in Proof. High quality explosive welds of lead to steel have recently been obtained at ambient temperature using a low velocity (1000 M per sec) free running dynamite. IRON and steel scrap has again become page one news, as it was during the war. To many this is anomalous because the common concept is that the theaters of war are literally paved with scrap as the by-product of war damage and abandoned materiel. To an extent this is true, the bottleneck being the ferreting out and transportation of this scrap. While you as consumers of the electric-furnace grades of scrap-the premium grades-are concerned primarily in only one segment of the scrap market, I believe you ill be interested in a general discussion of the market with subsequent funneling down to your specialty.

AS If see it, then, the engineering advances of which yob have studied here at Golden, the continued growth of. industry that you see about you here in Colorado, and the country-wide progress that I have not time to discuss-these illuminating facts should clear away any doubts as to your future. You have little license to ask, "Where is the call for engineering or what the need? Yankee fashion I might ask you by way of reply, "Have all the mines been opened? Have all the power-houses and transmission lines been built? Have the last improvements in. mill and smelter been in-stalled?" We know that the general answer is No, and the rest of the answer, which tells where are those mines and power plants and what are the new methods and processes in mining and metallurgy, must be sup-plied by you engineers of the future. And anyone who has even casually observed what recent years have brought forth in our profes- sion cannot but envy you your job. Our reconnaissance excur-sion into your future should not be much longer extended, but before turning back there are four landmarks that I would like to point out-not lofty peaks but useful tie points that are worthy of your attention as you traverse the territory of your future work. Two of these are in fact low spots or depressed areas which call for engineering activity; these are commonly called "waste" and "average." The other two are of larger significance and are rather extensive regions in the domain you are to enter and occupy. These larger tracts bear the suggestive place names "fact-finding" and "human engineering" and perhaps will prove to be the heights from which the broadest outlook is to be had in this "pilgrim's progress:" In the first place, waste deserves your attention, al-though I realize that it is possibly the most unpopular word anyone hailing from Washington can publicly utter. Its unpopularity naturally follows from its overuse in the somewhat strong charges made against the industrial and business world some years ago, when the doctrine of conservation was first preached in the land. But waste is a word to be used in an engineering sense as well as for political effect. Properly used, waste is not a word to shy at-rather it is a challenge to the engineer. For example, at present, the loss of 1 kilowatt-hour to every 5 sold is a clarion call to the electrical engineer. Waste is your target to shoot at, the obstacle for you to surmount, the giant for you to slay.

Pollution problems from smelters may be unique in industry since the pollutants cover the wide range of SOx, particulates, carcinogens (arsenic), plus a number of heavy metals, the health implications of which are not clearly understood. In addition to this wide range of pollutants, many of the plants are extremely old; and fugitive emissions may, in fact, be the most significant air pollution problem. The Environmental Protection Agency, both in an in-house and contract effort, has assessed the quantity of pollutants emitted and evaluated the health impact. This paper will review the status of EPA's regulatory efforts in both new and existing smelters in light of these pollutant assessment studies.

In the Ti-Cd system two intermediate phases, TiCd and Ti Cd, have been found and characterized by X-ray diffraction powder techniques. An earlier reference' had reported the existence of the compound Tisd. No structural details, however, were given nor was there any indication of the possible existence of other binary compounds. Studies of the solubility of titanium in liquid cadmium2 led to the discovery of both TiCd and Tisd. The solid phase in equilibrium with saturated solutions of titanium in liquid cadmium at temperatures below 620°C is TiCd, whereas TizCd is the equilibrium solid phase above 620°C. Both thermal analysis and X-ray studies show that a peritectic reaction between the y phase (~isd) and cadmium to form the 6 phase (Ti Cd) occurs at 620°C. X-ray diffraction powder photographs of material isolated from the ingots used in the solubility measurements as well as material prepared by a direct heat of the appropriate stoichiometric amounts of titanium and cadmium can be indexed on the basis of a tetragonal unit cell with a = 2.904 ± 0.002A, co = 8.954 * 0.004A, c/a = 3.083. No variation of lattice parameters indicative of a range of composition is evident. With four atoms in the unit cell the calculated density of the intermetallic is 7.05 g per cm3; the observed value is 7.07 g per cm3. The TiCd lattice is primitive as indicated by the fact that there are no systematic absences among hkl reflections. The absence of all hko reflections for which h + k = 2n + 1 is also evident. This systematic absence indicates the following two space groups, C\h — P4/n and D&~4/nmm; both groups, however, have the same two- and four-fold positions. Stoichiometry, symmetry and space group indicate two likely structure types. They are the PbO-litharge3 (B10) type and the Ti CU (B11) type. Spatial considerations favor the B11 structure with atoms placed in the following positions: 2Ti (c) 0, 1/2, Z; l/2, 0, Z 2Cd(c) 0, 1/2, Z; 1/2, 0, Z The TiCd structure may be summarily described as a layered structure in which double cadmium layers alternate with double titanium layers along the c-axis. The best agreement between calculated and observed intensities is obtained for the values ZTi = 0.608 and ZCd = 0.130. Calculated and observed powder intensities as well as other pertinent powder data are recorded in Table I.
