The Premier mine has been in existence for over 75 years and is closely woven into the glamour of the history of South Africa. A note on the geological formation of the diamond pipe and the gabbro gives a clearer overall picture of the mine. Mining methods for operations above and below the gabbro sill are briefly discussed. Ventilation arrangements for mining above the sill are briefly described and possible ventilation arrangements for mining below the sill are discussed in more detail. Note: conversions to S.I. units are not exact as rounding has been done.

Mine operators, conveyor system designers, consultants, and manufacturers have had opportunities over the past decade to utilize various actively controlled technologies to drive complex underground conveyor systems. These technologies included several electrical drive solutions, mechanical drive solutions, and hydromechanical (fluid coupling) drive solutions. All of these technologies have their inherent advantages and disadvantages, and only after several years of operation can mine operators fairly evaluate the overall benefits (short term performance and cost vs. longer term operational and maintenance costs) of any particular drive. Far too often in today's world, decisions for new equipment are made with inadequate regard to issues concerning serviceability and maintainability. Many of the newer electrical technologies (primarily AC variable speed drives) which have been used in recent years were selected based on the perceived desirable benefit from variable speed operation. This technology, however, which differs sign8cantly between various manufacturers, is in a constant state of evolution which puts into question the manufacturers' ability for long-term product support. In addition, various forms of this technology have also generated some undesirable operational issues, including reduced motor life, harmonics for the power system, and mine communications problems. This technology is also extremely current-limited, which results in problems handling overload conditions, a frequent occurrence often resulting from a decline in the coal recovery rate (conveying more rock than coal). The fluid coupling, however, is based on a technology which has been used successfully in underground conveyor applications for decades. Although the base hydrodynamic technology is well proven and has inherently beneficial characteristics on conveyor applications, Voith has continuously improved on this technology to meet the increasing demands of today's challenging conveyor haulage systems. Recognizing a need in the market for a reliable, actively controlled drive system, Voith Turbo began development in 1996 of a new, actively controlled coupling which was targeted specifically for the higher powered, complex underground conveyors. Voith introduced the new TPKL Fill Controlled coupling product to the market in 1997, and the first two applications for this new technology were on multiple drive mpper booster applications on longwall panel conveyors. Since the successful startup of these two conveyor systems in 1998, Voith has supplied over 200 TPKL couplings to the mining industry worldwide, with over 150 in US coal mining applications alone. This paper will provide an overview of the TPKL's capabilities, performance, and reliability based on the TPKL's impressive installation base and operational history.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals through-out the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data developed at "test site" and laboratory locations indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. The development of new processes has to follow "best practice" rules in order to be technically and economically as efficient as possible. However, innovations, new process routes and new rules are continuously emerging to minimize financial risk and maximize environmental compliance. Process simulation, which offers a complete overview of the flowsheet, makes it possible to cope with this new challenge-minimizing waste production and water consumption. Furthermore, simulation provides an estimate, at the early stage, of the cost of alternative technical routes. Four examples involving biotechnological circuits are presented, both at the design and commissioning stages.

As part of a survey on the long range supply of gallium, a comprehensive review of the chemistry of commercial gallium extraction was undertaken Owing to its very small concentration in all commercial minerals, gallium can be produced economically only as a by-product of major extraction processes for other materials. "Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. The past few years have seen a much greater concern about air pollution in this country. This concern has led to increased legislation restricting the discharge of many substances such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter to the atmosphere. In the future, it is anticipated the present permissible emission levels will be lowered. Current and impending restrictions on the emission of sulfur dioxide have brought out the fact that there is a shortage of available low-sulfur fuel for power plants and industrial use which promises to have an economic impact on the nation's energy picture (1) The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co., under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research, has developed a process to produce a fuel capable of meeting the energy requirements of this nation (2) The process is called "The Pittsburg & Midway Solvent Refined Coal Process". The principle product from the process is Solvent Refined Coal which is an ashless, low-sulfur fuel with 16,000 BTU per pound regardless of the rank coal from which it is produced. The product can be burned as either a solid or a liquid fuel. The process appears to be economically more attractive than other methods of alleviating the pollution problems of this nation. In addition to reducing the air pollution caused by stack gases, the product produced is potentially useful as a source of electrode coke and electrode binder pitch, as a gas turbine fuel, in the production of metallurigical coke and pavement asphalt, and as the first step in the overall process to produce distillate fuels and pipeline gas (3).

In the Basin and Range Province of Nevada, geophysics is used to assist exploration for bulk minable gold deposits, particularly over pediments. It is employed for mapping thickness of alluvium and Tertiary valley fill, for mapping covered structures, and for identifying alteration zones. In addition to potential field and seismic methods, three different electrical and electromagnetic methods are frequently used, resistivity-induced polarization, controlled source audiomagnetotellurics, and time domain EM. A review and comparison of the principles of these methods, illustrated by case histories, is the topic of this paper.

Genstar's underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.

An expert system is a computer system that performs tasks that are considered by most people to require human expertise. Since their functioning relies heavily on large bodies of knowledge, they are often referred to as knowledge-based systems. These systems can contain the skill and knowledge of an individual human expert or the combined knowledge of a group of experts. The knowledge embodied in an expert system can consist of specific facts, HSHA regulations, heuristics or rules-of-thumb used by the expert, and databases. The purpose of this paper will be to introduce the participants in the ?Increase Competitiveness Thru Innovation? session to expert systems. This introduction will enable the participants to better appreciate the balance of the papers to be presented in this session. These papers will deal with specific mining problems and a proposed innovative solution. This paper will discuss such topics as problem-solving paradigms, rules of inference, knowledge representation, and the structure of expert systems.

Ventilation process in deep mines features relatively low efficiency. Commonly used passive control by means of regulators and flow throttling leads to remarkable energy losses that could be lower if effective monitoring and remote control of main fan operating point were implemented. In the paper, some results of investigation carried out in Polish coal mines to evaluate real energy losses in ventilation process are described. Different methods for main fans performance monitoring and control are considered and compared especially those using fan drive speed control to minimize power consumption. On the other hand some criteria for power evaluation are analysed and algorithms for optimum location of controllers in ventilation network are considered. The results of investigation are being implemented in the first system for monitoring and control of main fan operating point in Miechowice colliery.

The high grade gold and silver Ken Snyder Mine is located in north-central Nevada, in Elko County, adjacent to the town of Midas, approximately 240 miles to the east­northeast of Reno and approximately 60 miles to the northeast of the town of Winnemucca. The Midas Joint Venture (MJV), an equal partnership between Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation, Inc. and Euro­Nevada Mining Corporation, Inc. with Franco-Nevada Mining Corporation, Inc. being the joint venture manager, owns the mine. In May 1997, Kilborn Denver, now SNC-Lavalin America, completed a bankable feasibility study and proceeded with detailed design, procurement and construction management. In mid December 1998, MJV not only poured their first gold several months ahead of schedule, but were already operating at full production. In addition, the construction of this US $84 million mine, mill and related facilities were completed on budget. Operating cash costs are US $78/oz. This paper describes how this was accomplished.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some oversteepened slopes that are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has shown that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations are summarized in this paper, and field results are shown.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

This study examines the problems involved with the control of characteristics of the products resulting from comminution operations. A methodology of investigation based on texture analysis procedures by image processing techniques of the comminution product is proposed. Some examples of applications are considered with particular reference to comminution products of different textural, structural and mechanical characteristics. The advantages and the limites of this method of approach are, indicated, both as regards performance of the investigations and subsequent processing of results.

The history, current applications and future of biotechnical developments in the metals' extraction industry are reviewed. Bioleaching of copper minerals continues to be the most significant application. Uranium bioleaching was successfully demonstrated at industrial scale. Developments are now being made in biooxidative pretreatment of refractory gold concentrates, ores and low-grade materials. Advancements are forthcoming in water and solid mine waste bioreclamation, including metals' biosorption, wetland treatment of acid mine drainage, and biodegradation of cyanide in spent, heap-leach operations. Better understanding of the types and functions of microorganisms involved in metal interactions could advance genetic engineering applications in bioleaching and bioreclamation.

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that can be used to mix computer-generated images of data with views of the real world. The University of Nottingham is developing AR technology in a major research project which can be used to assist mining companies in visualising complex mine data whilst out in the field. The technology comprises of integrated GPS surveying technology and electronic orientation devices to provide location and viewing information, video capture via digital camera and portable computing hardware to overlay 3D models on views of the real world. The paper describes the concepts of the technology in some detail and concentrates on the possible applications of this in the surface mining and exploration industries.

Many systems which are modelled mathematically result in a model where the relationships between some or all of the parameters are found to be non-linear. These systems are usually complicated further by a desire to make the system achieve multiple and often conflicting objectives or goals simultaneously. Rozwadowski (1970) developed a model to describe the total discounted net profit of a mine as a function of the amount of ore developed and of the grade of the amount of ore mined. Dynamic programming was used to determine the policy which gave the maximum net present value. In this paper it is shown that the relationships between the variables can be approximated by piecewise linear functions. This is amenable to solution by an algorithm based on the simplex algorithm of linear programming. The goals of maximizing the net present value, the total net profit and the total gold output are incorporated simultaneously into a goal programming formulation of the system. The resulting model is characterized by a large number of disconnected constraints. These are decomposed into several smaller problems and the problem solved. The solution is examined to discover the sensitivity of the system to changes in certain parameters. In particular the interaction between the three goals is analysed to determine whether there is conflict between any of the goals and, if so, what the trade-offs between the conflicting goals are.
