A numerical model is being developed to assess the enhancement of permeability by improved fracture connectivity by micro-hydrofracturing. A generic two-dimensional percolation model has been developed to test the impact of various field conditions on permeability. Field data from Cyprus Minerals' Mineral Park Mine has been used to establish statistical properties of the observed fracture systems. Results of statistical anlyses of the field data and examples of the use of percolation model are presented.

The occurrence of acid mine Drainage (AMD) with coal mining has been well documented. (1) Less documentation is available of its association with other types of mining, e.g., copper, gold, zinc, and sulfur. Yet there are many locations in the western states where acid mine drainage is as great a pollution problem as in Appalachia and in some cases, because of the high copper, zinc, and arsenic concentrations, they present an even more difficult problem. Until a few years ago, it was generally believed that the neutralization of acid mine drainage was uneconomical thus, AMD was allowed to discharge freely into our streams. However, the demand for good water finally dictated that the mining industry be included under pollution laws. In 1964 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania passed a law requiring that all active mine discharges meet a discharge standard of pH 6-9, iron less than 7 mg/1, and the water must have a net alkalinity. Several other states now require active mines to treat AMD. In all but a few cases, lime neutralization, often in conjunction with aeration, has been the treatment method used. The high cost of lime as compared to limestone and the poor quality sludge, (slow settling, large volumes, and low solids content) has stimulated work in the utilization of limestone. This paper reports on the current state-of-the-art of limestone treatment of AMD.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed an inflatable feed-tube seal (IFTS) for high-expansion foam generators. The IFTS is a lightweight, portable, rectangular inflatable bag that can be used by firefighters to rapidly seal large openings, such as those in underground mines, and to simultaneously provide a feed-tube for a high-expansion foam generator. Thus allows fire fighting foam to freely flow to the fire site and control or extinguish the fire. Studies indicated that a high-expansion foam plug will travel 183 m (600 ft) down an entry with a 4.5% rise in elevation, before leakage of foam from around the inflatable partition.

As more phosphate deposits are discovered and new mines are developed, the necessity of critically evaluating various rocks for phosphoric acid production recurs ever more frequently. This need is accentuated by the increasing number of, fertilizer plants being constructed on deep water at various locations to serve world markets and to take advantage of locally-available sulfur or sulfur-bearing ores. A major proportion of all phosphate rock mined is consumed by wet-process plants and this acid in turn is consumed, usually captively, in the manufacture of fertilizer. It is apparent, therefore, that the first question asked by the developer of a new deposit is - How will it work in a wet-process plant? and conversely, when developing a deep water, project, one of the early studies required is - Which of the available rocks shall we use? What is the correct price to pay? How do we compare one rock with another? The economic importance of even minor aspects of these questions

Each mining operation is unique in some aspect ownership; ore body location, size, geometry, grade, mineralogy, hydrology, or geotechnical parameters; or constraints such as environmental regulations. However, all mining operations are alike in one aspect; the prime objective of any mining project is to maximize the return on the investment. This is the golden rule, or in the language of mining, the investor?s law of conservation. A mineral resource, by definition, does not become a minable reserve unless the mineral or minerals can be extracted economically (and legally). The three preceding sections have covered the various types of surface mining options. The choice of the most economic method is dictated primarily by the type of de-posit to be mined, the mining rate, and the physical characteristics of the deposit.

INTRODUCTION As the world's supply of near-surface metalliferous ore bodies is depleted, more emphasis must be placed upon mechanized bulk systems of underground mining. In particular, block caving is becoming increasingly important as a method of mining low to moderate grade deposits at depths of somewhat less than 1219 m (4000 ft). 00 ft). The block caving method requires that the ore body be completely undercut, thereby removing its means of support and inducing failure which progresses from the undercut to the ground surface. As the span of the under- cut increases and the weight of the overlying crushed ore body becomes greater, large stresses are induced on slusher and haulage drifts. Stability of these drifts is critical in block caving operations and often proves to be an extremely difficult task (Kendorski, 1976; McWilliams, 1975). Slusher drift maintenance can be costly, often exceeding that of the original support costs. This chapter analyzes the ground support problems of an Arizona block caving mine. The mine presently uses monolithic concrete liners as a support method. Failure of the liners occurs as the undercut approaches, thus initiating a maintenance problem which will continue until the ore body is depleted in that block or panel. To examine this problem, a simple analysis of the stresses induced by the advancing undercut was per- formed. Utilizing a design method developed by Dixon ( 1973, 1974), the calculated stresses were used to deter- mine the minimum thickness required for varying section shapes of unreinforced concrete liners. It is found that the thicknesses required for stable linings are not economic. Recently developed empirical methods of support de- sign are utilized (Barton, 1974; Bieniawski, 1973) and compared to the analytical method. A final discussion of alternative methods of support is given with recommendations for the use of passive or "yielding" support methods. LAKESHORE MINE (GENERAL GEOLOGY) The Lakeshore copper property is located in Pinal County, AZ, approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Casa Grande. The Lakeshore deposit is a porphyry cop- per similar to others in Arizona. The ore body consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and fracture fillings in quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP), Cretaceous volcanic (KVS), Precambrian diabase, and Mescal limestone. The ore body has been divided into three distinct zones of mineralization which have been termed (South, 1972) the oxide zone, the sulfide zone, and the tactite zone. The oxide zone occurs in the upper portions of the ore body and consists primarily of leached and oxidized quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The sulfide zone underlies the oxide zone and includes all quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous rocks which have not been oxidized. The thickness of the sulfide zone is variable and ranges from about 61 to 122 m (200 to 400 ft). The tactite zone occurs in a series of Paleozoic metasediments consisting of tactite, quartzite, diabase, hornfels, and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry. The tactite zone is highly variable in thickness and underlies the Cretaceous volcanic and sediments throughout the mine. Together, the tactite and sulfide zones are known as the thick or tall sulfides. The greatest support stability problems occur in mining of the tactite zone and are therefore the subject of the remainder of this chapter. The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50 percent of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15-percent reduction in energy usage (kwh/t). These improvements have been made through optimization of grinding efficiency and use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory testwork and computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

Efficient performance of EPB TBMs in clayey ground is primarily dominated by the flow capability of the excavated muck in the cutterhead and screw conveyor. Currently, Consistency Index approach is used to evaluate clay clogging potential, but it does not include the effects of surcharge pressure on clay behavior. In this paper, a macro-scale soil rheometer is introduced to assess the clogging potential under various water content and surcharge loading conditions. The results show that, in addition to water content, surcharge pressure has clear impact on clay clogging too. In practice, Consistency Index chart can be refined to incorporate the impact of face pressure to better simulate the EPB tunneling conditions.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

Within the national and international strategy of the German based construction company HOCHTIEF, the majority of its business units is equipped with the comprehensive software package ARISTOTELES. This software is a powerful business information system for all accounting and controlling related processes in medium-sized and large construction and other related companies. Due to the complexity of the software, time constraints, and limited financial resources an implementation of this software package requires thorough project management. In this paper the relevant elements of project management are outlined based on practical experiences gained during this international IT - implementation project. Special emphasis is directed to the identification and management of potential risks. In this case particular acknowledgement was given to the multinational nature of the project and modernization of the business. This includes thorough reorganization of the company, significant changes of job requirements, and substantial trainings for its employees. At the same time key success factors like knowledge transfer, adoption of Czech legal requirements, commitment of management, networked thinking, and integrated project planning come into play. The costs for implementation had to be carefully evaluated because the software was implemented in a country with a considerably low cost I price level. All these impacts to the business had to be managed within the scope of transformation of business and political environment from socialist to market driven economy.

A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

The gyratory mill shown in Figures I and II is a ball mill in every sense of the term, in that the grinding media are balls. The media container, called the shell, is of the form of a shallow cylindrical tank whose position is with axis vertical The mechanism of the mill is designed to swing the shell in a circular path of small radius and, at the same time, to hold the shell in a position of constant orientation, i.e., the motion of the shell is such that every point on the shell surface -- bottom, wall and cover--travels in a perfect (horizontal) circle. The gyratory mill is definitely not a centrifugal ball mill. The balls do not, individually Qr in mass, travel in a circular path. Each ball, under heavy pressure from all directions, develops a sphere, or zone, of activity. Particles entering this sphere are crushed by impact. The gyratory ball mill, unlike the conventional tumbling mill, does not have, and is cursed by, a "critical speed". The speed of gyration, and in turn the power drawn by the mill--and ball potency--is limited only by the mechanical en- durance of the machine parts.

As new technologies are introduced to the mining industry, the challenges related to their safe assimilation and the potential changes they bring to mining techniques necessitate adjustments to the current operations. Predictive simulations are critical to understanding unforeseen scenarios and shifting costly changes from the operational stage to the design. The Digital Twin methodology has gained a lot of attention in recent years. Many industries, from manufacturing to engineering and even social sciences, are adopting this approach to understand better the complex systems they are working with. By considering the enormous expenses and risks related to a pilot project, DT could replace that by acting as a prototype in which realistic tests and simulations are carried out with close to zero cost. DT includes a data hub, simulation and analysis tools, and visualization platforms to enable appropriate designs and monitoring plans focusing on unknown areas. A few examples of DT's application in mining include fleet management, Mine-to-Mill optimization (especially D&B), geotechnical digital twin (gDT), etc. When developing regulations, testing the efficiency of the mine layout, design, and magnitude of the restricted area and its access points, human-machine interactions, risk identification, and management processes, examining the efficacy of control systems, and monitoring, DT could help speed up (or completely replace) the process in the physical world.

Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

Until about three years ago, Asarco's copper business consisted predomi¬nantly of custom smelting of ores and concentrates produced by other mining companies. Since then, the company has been transforming itself into a fully integrated producer in copper mining, smelting, and refining. In doing this, Asarco has lowered its costs and restructured its operations and finances. Now, Asarco hopes to complete this process by spending $260 million over the next three years, to expand and modernize its copper facilities and boost production by some 40%. The capital spending program includes: • $130 million at the Ray mine about 113 km (70 miles) north of Tucson, AZ, to expand mining capacity and install an in-pit ore crusher, mill, and concentrator; • $100 million, to expand the mining capacity at the Mission Complex located south of Tucson, AZ, and refurbish the adjacent, idle Pima mill and concentrator. (Asarco had earlier exercised an option to purchase the Pima mill for about $6 million); and • $30 million, to modernize the copper smelter in El Paso, TX, with a new flash smelting process. The new program is in addition to a recently completed first-phase expansion of the Mission mine, mill, and concentrator. This $13 million debottlenecking of existing operations in¬creased production capacity by 46% or 24.5 kt/a (27,000 stpy), to 79 kt/a (87,000 stpy) of copper in concentrates. In addition, a previously an¬nounced $12 million expansion program at the Ray mine is scheduled for completion in early 1990. It will expand mill capacity, to offset the anticipated effects of increasing ore hardness as the pit deepens. Ray produces 68 kt/a (75,000 stpy) of copper in concen¬trates and an additional 36 kt/a (40,000 stpy) of electrowon copper. By 1992, when Asarco's expanded and modernized copper facilities are operating at capacity, the company's mine output will have increased by 67 kt/a (74,000 stpy), to 263 kt/a (290,000 stpy) of contained copper. That will be enough to provide all of the feed required for Asarco's two copper smelters - by then, both of them modern, state-of-the-art facilities. Asarco's expansion and modernization program will further reduce costs and provide added assurance that the company's copper business will be profitable at the bottom of the cycle, according to Chairman Richard de J. Osborne The Ray mine portion of the new program will include construction at the mine of a new mill and concentrator, with a capacity of 18 kt/d (20,000 stpd) of ore. These new semiautogenous grinding mills and large capacity flotation cells will augment the present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) concentrator located 29 km (18 miles) away, in Hayden, AZ. A 29 km (18 mile) pipeline will be built to carry tailings in slurry form from the new Ray mill to the present tailings pond. Concentrates from the new facility will be shipped by rail to Asarco's Hayden copper smelter. Ray's present 27.2 kt/d (30,000 stpd) crusher, adjacent to the open-pit, will be replaced by a 54.4 kt/d (60,000 stpd), portable in-pit crusher and conveying system. This will reduce the more expensive ore haulage by truck. The Ray project is scheduled for completion by 1992. It will increase the mine's annual output of copper in concentrates by an additional 33.5 kt/a (37,000 st), to 102 kt (112,000 st). And the project could mean an additional 400 jobs at the 730 employee Ray operation. Work at the Mission Complex involves reactivation of the Pima mill and concentrator and expansion of mine output sufficient to provide ore to both the Pima mill and the present Mission mill. In 1985, Asarco purchased the Pima mine, which occupies one end of the Mission pit. Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. Throughout the 1970s, the US Bureau of Mines rode an ebb tide in Washington political circles. In rapid fire succession, the agency lost its mine health and safety enforcement responsibility (1973), a large portion of its energy research responsibility (1975), and then its fuel statistics functions plus a sizable portion of its coal R&D (1977). By 1978, johnny-come-latelies in the Energy, Labor, and Interior Departments had siphoned away from the Bureau some $125 million in program responsibilities as well as 900 of its employees. The bruising decade came to a close with a Department of Natural Resources proposal that, in its original form, would have scattered the Bureau's responsibilities to the winds. "There is no doubt in my wind," said Lindsay Norman, acting director of the Bureau of Mines (see box), "that were the Bureau to continue down the path it was on, the next step was closing the doors and going out of business." The doors are still open, but erosion of responsibilities had a devastating effect on the resources available to fulfill the Bureau's mission. Devastating, too, in terms of internal morale, considering the Bureau had six directors in a 10-year span. "When the troops are in the trenches and are being shot at," Norman said, "they need a leader-hopefully, a permanent one- that can get them advancing. This is something the Bureau did not consistently have in the 1970s." In September 1978, Roger Markle climbed aboard as director of the Bureau to rejuvenate the 70-year-old agency. He resigned only six months later* but the program Markle set in motion is being carried through by Lindsay Norman. Since Norman's appointment as acting director, he has spent considerable time on the road explaining his agency's redefined goals. At one such stop in Duluth, Norman and his two deputy directors, Charles Kenahan and Mike Kaas, answered the following questions. Lindsay, you were the principal architect in the Bureau's 1979 reorganization. How about a glimpse of what that entailed? Toward the end of the 1970s, after almost a decade of steady dismemberment, we reached what we felt was a critical point in the Bureau's history-we had the choice of redefining and strengthening our organization to meet the mineral challenges ahead, or continuing down the path toward the agency's eventual demise. We felt the Bureau's mission too important to abandon, so in 1978 with Roger Markle as director we initiated a six-month, no-holds-barred intro spection of just what the Bureau should be doing, why, and toward what ultimate national needs. And what did this self-reflection reveal? That there is, indeed, a unique federal role for the Bureau of Mines-that of a lead agency for influencing mineral decisions and pioneering tomorrow's technologic advances. Don't confuse us with policymakers, we're not. But we are policy analysts; we're scientists, engineers, and mineral professionals who can offer a sorely needed source of objective, accurate information to decision makers in both the public and private sectors. I feel there is no better brain trust in government than the Bureau when it comes to mineral expertise-of course, I'm biased. Do I understand you to say the Bureau of Mines is an advocate agency for the minerals industry? We plead no parochial interests, nor ought we, but from our viewpoint a sound minerals industry is extremely important to the broader national goals of security and a healthy economy. US dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals, the increasing noncompetitiveness of some US mineral sectors, and the array of land use issues surrounding mineral-rich lands all have much more serious implications than many otherwise informed people seem to recognize. In your estimation, how vulnerable is the US to foreign mineral suppliers? Let me make a distinction between dependency and vulnerability. The

The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. 'An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

Contract required excavating 2,000 If of 14' horseshoe tunnel in rock, a 95' deep work shaft on shore, and a 50' deep intake shaft located in the middle of the Niagara River just above Niagara Falls. Large quantities of H2S were encountered in the range of 20 PPM with ventilation. Peak levels of 40 PPM were recorded. The original designed ventilation system required only a volume of 10,000 CFM to meet OSHA requirements. The volume of air was increased to 50,000 CFM to dilute the H2S to al- low workmen to work and comply with OSHA H2S action levels. The second phase of the tunnel consisted of placing 72" ID X 20 foot long concrete reinforced pipe in the tunnel. When the tunnel was holed through and both shafts were open, a substantial amount of work was required to take place in the shafts which eliminated the possibility of placing a bulkhead to secure proper ventilation. The ventilation team designed a jet system airlock. The design of this system was to bring fresh air down the work shaft in two duct systems; one 30" diameter and one 24" diameter. Following the excellent work of Jan Wolski (7th Mine Ventilation Symposium chapter 58) our design incorporated nozzles located approximately 100' in by the work shaft. The velocity of the 24" diameter duct was 6,365 FPMD2.2 MPH. The velocity of the 30" diameter duct was 6,117 FPMl69.5 MPH. Both systems were on blow and being that air expands at 3112 degrees per side this high velocity of air expanded and created an air bulk head through which men and the large sections of concrete pipe could be passed without any delay or additional cost to the project.
