This paper addresses the impact of declining world rutile resources upon the production of titanium products and their asso¬ciated costs. Titanium is used primarily for the production of pigments; in its metal form it is considered a strategic and critical material to the U.S. defense and aerospace industries. There are two major mineral sources for titanium: ilmenite and rutile. Both these mineral types can be used to produce titanium pigments. Only high grade titanium concentrates, such as rutile, high-grade ilmenite, and synthetic rutile (which is produced through further processing of ilmenite), can be used in the production of titanium metal. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of titanium from market economy countries. The paper will show that production from economic rutile mines will decline sometime after the turn of the century and that rutile shortages could be alleviated by production from other high-grade titanium resources such as higher cost rutile deposits and anatase deposits, or through an increase in world synthetic rutile capacity.

Benchtop experiments were performed, in which an electric field was used to enhance separation of water from phosphatic clay suspensions from a central Florida mine. A constitutive relationship was established that relates the increase in solids content to operating time and the applied electric field. An upper limit to the degree of separation was found to be a function of electric field, and the time required to achieve this limiting value was also a function of electric field. The energy requirement for removal of water ranged from 1.25 to 175 Wh/kg water removed as a function of the electric field. A mathematical model was developed that provided good agreement to the experimental values and served to validate the constitutive relationship.

INTRODUCTION In response to the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (Public Law 95-604, Section 114c), a report has been prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1980) which describes the potential health and environmental effects associated with uranium mine wastes. The author was responsible for the geology, hydrology and aqueous pathways analysis portions of the report. All potential sources of contaminants, solids, liquids, and airborne emissions, which might cause adverse impacts upon the environment or health of nearby populations were considered. Wastes at both active and inactive uranium mines (Hans and O'Connell, 1981) are described and assessed with respect to dose and health effects (Blanchard et al. 1981). The emphasis of this paper is on the liquid emissions and the aqueous pathway. Model uranium mines were developed for surface and underground mines. The model underground mine was placed in New Mexico while the model surface mine was in Wyoming. Development of a generic assessment was complicated due to the inherent variability of uranium mines. Also, most information available relates to uranium mills rather than to mines, or reported measurements were often influenced (biased) by wastes from a nearby mill and did not specifically reflect mine discharges. Consequently, the assessment presented is often based on conservatve (maximizing) assumptions which are identified as such, and which were based on knowledge from field investigations, available literature, and consultations inside and outside the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Maximum use was made of available data, supplemented with limited field studies in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Stream survey work in Colorado by the Water Pollution Control Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey (Moran, 1974; Wentz, 1974) mentioned a portion of the Uravan Mineral Belt and uranium mines therein, but the work did not emphasize uranium mines. Significant amounts of acidity and total trace metal concentrations were found in streams from 18 different mining areas. Dilution and chemical precipitation below mine drainages decreased concentration and increased the pH. Given enough time and distance, the streams recover naturally, but the accumulations of trace metals in the sediments increase. Field observations in 1971-72 of streams in most of Colorado indicated that approximately 724 km of streams in 25 different mining areas were adversely affected by mine drainage (Wentz, 1974). Discussions of the impacts of uranium mining on water quality or quantity are incidental in numerous impact statements and environmental reports prepared by industry and (or) the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an integral part of licensing or relicensing uranium mills. Coverage on mining is usually minor as the principal focus is on milling impacts. The same is true for the recently prepared generic EIS on regulation of uranium milling (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1979). Radiochemical assessment of surface and groundwater in uranium mining districts of New Mexico is done by self-monitoring programs associated with NPDES permits. Also, radiochemical assessment studies have been funded by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Unfortunately, there has been no concerted effort to prepare broad assessments of the cumulative impacts of mining and milling in areas of interest in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Critical review and synthesis of these types of data can produce rather useful information. For example, the publication "Water Quality Impacts of Uranium Mining and Milling Activities in the Grants Mineral Belt, New Mexico" (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) addresses the groundwater and surface water changes as the result of extensive uranium mining and milling production in a relatively confined area. A more recent report by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality summarizes 16 years of aqueous radium and uranium data. The study reports significant amounts of radium-226 and uranium were present in surface water in the Shirley Basin as a result of inadequate mine water treatment (Harp, 1978). In Texas, surface water and groundwater monitoring conducted by industry, as well as by State and Federal agencies, reveals little or no change of chemical quality attributable to uranium mining and milling (Gesell, 1977; Kallus, 1976). This conclusion is based on 586 samples collected from 198 stations over a period of 39 years, but primarily from 1961 to 1975. The State monitoring program by several agencies is continuing, but data reporting and interpretation is lagging. One survey (Itin, 1975) showed that none of the mine water from the 10 lakes that were sampled was suitable for human use. The lakes were also unsuitable for irrigation due to mineralization of the water by sulfate, chloride, and TDS. One of the 10 was suitable for stock watering.

A technique was devised by the US Bureau of Mines to recover coarse [+1.2-mm (14- mesh)] North Carolina phosphate now discarded as waste. Concentration utilizes the difference in particle sphericity between the relatively flat calcite and the rounded phosphate pebbles. Sizing, treatment in a continuous hydraulic classification system, and grinding upgraded a 17% P,O5 reject to 4.5% P,05 with a phosphate recovery of 63%. The CaO: P2O5 ratio was reduced from 2.49 to 1.66.

Production began in the Deep 1 zone of Goldex mine in 2017 at a depth of 1,200 m. Stope dimensions are 50 m high by 22 m wide (along strike) and the panel thickness varies between 22 to 35 m. The Deep 1 orebody is 350 m high by 400 m along strike and 200 m from hanging wall to footwall. The mining method is longhole with paste backfill with a three dimensional primary/secondary sequence advancing upwards in a typical chevron approach and retreating from hanging wall to footwall in a V-shape from a central panel. Mining at a depth of 1,200 m in massive granodiorite brings challenges related to seismicity.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. The Pachuca-Real Del Monte district, Hidalgo, Mexico (Figure 1) has produced roughly 1,500,000,000 oz Ag., 6,000,000 oz Au. and minor Pb., Zn, and Cu from about 100,000,000 tons of ore since discovery early in the 16th century. Production has come from epithermal vein deposits that have been up to 8 km in length, 650 m in vertical extent and 45 m in width but which averaged 200-400 m in length and vertical extent and 2-4 m in width. Ore deposits occur through-out an area about 12 km E-W by 10 km N-S (Figure 2) and between the elevations of 2000 and 2800 m above sea level. The deposits occur as shoots in the veins and terminate laterally where the veins narrow, upward where the veins pinch out and downward where the veins decrease in silver con-tent to below the cut-off grade; the veins are known to extend 500 m below the bottoms of the ore bodies and probably extend to much greater depths. The district lies wholly within a mid-to-late Tertiary volcanic rock sequence that is made up principally of andesite and dacite lava flows and flow-breccias. Although the bottom of the sequence is not exposed in the district, stratigraphic constructions indicate the volcanic rocks to have an aggregate thickness of 2000 to 2500 m. Structurally, the area is characterized by gentil warping and normal faulting of the volcanic rocks. Pre-ore modifications to the volcanic rock sequence consisted mainly of faulting along west-trending, south-dipping normal faults and north-trending high-angle faults.

On Nov. 4, 1981 A/S Sydvaranger's 1-kt/h (1,100-stph) wet-process, iron ore ball mill completed its first four months of uninterrupted, full-load operation in Kirkenes, Norway. This 6.5-m-diam (21-ft-diam) mill is driven by a gearless ring or wraparound 8.1-MW (10,860-hp) motor at 13.1 rpm-a first of a kind in this segment of industry. This article examines reasons for selecting this type of drive over more conventional schemes, lists specific advantages of such large mills, and describes the installation in Norway. History For almost a decade, good operating experiences have been gained with 28 gearless ring motor drives in the cement industry, driving 2.5 to 4-m-diam (8.2 to 13-ft-diam) tube mills with drive powers ranging from about 3-4 MW (4,000 - 8,000 hp). Why then did the mineral ore processing industry hesitate until 1980 to adopt this successful concept for similar applications on ball, semiautogenous, and autogenous mills? There are a number of good reasons in the eyes of conservative mill builders and operators, the most commonly cited ones are: • No operating experience in this segment of specialized industry. • More severe environmental conditions in the wet ore grinding process. • An indifferent attitude of mill builders and electric motor manufacturers towards new drive technologies. • Limited confidence in solid-state power supply systems, such as frequency converters of the required size. There have been and still are numerous problems associated with low-speed geared mill drives of any kind, especially with individual motor/gear sizes approaching or exceeding about 4 MW (5,360 hp). Every mill builder knows about them, but operators learn to accept them as inevitable. The Decision to Change Three things combined to break this technological stalemate: the courage and progressive spirit of one major iron ore processor in Scandinavia, the cooperation of three experienced manufacturers, and an unusual application problem that could not be solved by any conventional approach. The last factor was surely the decisive one, but the first one does not come as a surprise either. The Swedes near Kiruna and the Norwegians around Kirkenes are experienced ore miners and processors, and much credit goes to them for technological breakthroughs in the industry. At A/S Sydvaranger in Kirkenes, above the Polar circle at about the latitude of Alaska's northern tip, the existing grinding facilities, with a total of 14 100 to 240-t/h (110 to 264-stph) ball mills, can not be expanded. Nevertheless, to increase mill throughput, only installing a larger mill in place of an existing smaller one was a practical alternative. For this replacement, the owners set requirements that seemed impossible to meet: • The old 100-t/h (110-stph) ball mill should be replaced with a new ball mill with 10 times the rated throughput, without significantly impairing the operation of the remaining mills, and without significantly changing the mill building. • The new mill should have a variable-speed drive to ultimately optimize the grinding process by means of a closed-loop process¬computer-controlled grinding cycle, and to minimize the specific energy consumption. • Availability, efficiency, and life expectancy of all new components must be higher than those being replaced. • Inrush-current and harmonic loads on the rather weak electric supply line must be minimized to ensure safe plant operation. All old ball mills at A/S Sydvaranger are the geared type, using single synchronous and wound-rotor, slow-speed motors with ring-and-pinion gears. Operators are familiar with the limitations and problems associated with such drives, and they are aware that the following items become major concerns when drive powers are drastically increased: • Gears are subject to wear and tear, require frequent maintenance, and eventual replacement of major parts. • Gears are sensitive to misalignment, overload, and thermal distortion, limiting their useful life. • On dual or quadruple drives, load-sharing and torque oscillations between motors can be a major reason for concern. • At these speeds, ring-and-pinion gears reach their torque transmission capabilities altogether at around 4 MW (5,360 hp) per motor/pinion. To obtain the desired variable-speed performance of the new drive, the only practical and economical conventional solution would have been a frequency-controlled, low- or medium-speed dual motor drive with about 8 MW (10,720 hp) of power. This, however, was not feasible because of limited floor space. Therefore, bids were solicited for the alternative drive method, the gearless ring motor. General Considerations Why are such large mills considered? After all, one could avoid all the problems by simply staying with smaller mill unit sizes. Under competitive pressures of free markets, however, grinding efficiencies and specific energy consumption become key factors in selecting new equipment. The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

Energy dissipation and fragmentation of rock is of interest for mine-to-mill operations in order to understand breakage and to minimize energy consumption during blasting at the mine site, and comminution at the processing plant. In this regard, high velocity impact breakage of long granite cores, called bars, has been studied with instrumented strain gages to follow the energy dissipation gradient along the bar length resulting from the strain waves generated by impact. As a result of high velocity impact, three zones have been identified (fragmentation, fracture, and elastic) and these three zones have been characterized in 3D using X-ray tomography. The fragmentation zones of the granite bars were studied in detail to describe the particle size distribution and the particle shape characteristics. Finally, the experimental energy dissipation for the fragmentation zone was found to be in close agreement with the expected energy calculated from the Bond work equation, if the anisotropic granite particles are defined by length rather than by sieve size.

The Anaconda Minerals Company operates a molybdenite and copper producing mine and mill facility near Tonopah, Nevada. Included with the milling facility is a ferric chloride leach plant for removal of copper mineralization from the molybdenite concentrates. Discussed are the engineering and construction schedules associated with the leach plant. The chemistry associated with the process along with a description of the process flow, equipment, and operating parameters are contained in the paper.

Gold Quarry is a sediment-hosted, epithermal disseminated gold deposit located along the Carlin Trend. Gold, hosted by allochthonous Ordovician siltstones and cherts, is localized at the intersection of structures sympathetic to the major Good Hope and Gold Quarry faults. The magnitude of Gold Quarry was discovered in 1979 by surface exploration and by percussion holes drilled near the Maggie Creek orebody. Four years of development drilling delineated an open pit mineable gold deposit that contains 130 Mt (144 million st) of ore at an average 1.68 g/t (0.049 oz per st) of gold and includes a high-grade core of 46 Mt (51 million st) that average 2.64 g/t (0.077 oz per st) gold. Milling of the higher-grade portion began in 1985.

The spreading-ridge, or accreting plate margin, is the primary conduit of metals delivered to the earth's surface. Isotope ratios of lead show primitive mantle values at these sites, indicating that this is true. We can use lead isotopes in any mineral deposit to indicate the degree to which the metal is "primitive" in the sense of having been uncontaminated with U-enriched crust or "crustal" in the sense that it has been cycling at the earth's surface since earlier times. The reason for this is that the upper continental crust has an enrichment in the ratio of U/Pb over that in the mantle, so that old continental leads have a larger radiogenic component. The primitive metals delivered to the surface at the spreading-ridge are transported on the oceanic plate until they reach a subduction zone. Here they become cycled in the "orogen". However, in this process the primitive metals are mixed with metals from the continent so that the average lead isotope ratios are between those in the mantle and the average upper continental crust. Subsequently a part of the metals in the orogen may become fixed in a new block of continent. However there are processes which continue to uplift and erode ancient continental regions so that there is a continuous feeding back of metals to the orogen. We have therefore a cycling of metals from the existing continental crust into the orogen where they are mixed with new contributions from the spreading ridge and mantle.

or more than 50 years the Portland Cement Association has represented the United States cement industry in matters relating to the technology and use of cement and concrete. Interestingly enough, PCA?s emphasis has been on concrete and its uses rather than on Portland cement. The cement industry realized long ago that cement is basic and serves its fundamental purpose as an ingredient in concrete. Cement could never be successful if concrete were not. Work with the users and specifiers of concrete had to be done at its end point of application--in a building, bridge, dam, highway or home. PCA, over its half century of existence, has been dedicated to this job. I should like to talk to you today on the less technical side of concrete--what it has been--what it is today--and what it can offer in future construction. Concrete, in many forms, has a long background extending from such notable historic times as the Roman Empire. Here, concrete made from pozzolanic cement from the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius was used to construct the Coliseum, home of the Roman circus; for the Appian Way, the ancient forerunner of the Interstate system; and the miles of aqueducts throughout Europe, many of which still carry water. It is important to realize that lending institutions have a very different risk-profile from that of an equity investor. For bank financing, a feasibility study must address the concerns of the lender and these can be summarized under the four 'PI Is: Project, Performance, Product and People. Generally, feasibility studies focus on the measurable project risks associated with a new venture, but frequently insufficient emphasis is placed on key risk areas such as ore grade and metallurgical recovery. Before accepting full or even partial non-recourse risk, financial institutions will demand evidence that the project was constructed according to specifications and within budget and that its Performance within agreed limits has been demonstrated. Product risk should be discussed in detail in any feasibility study. For industrial minerals, penetration of the market can be critical to success and for commodities with volatile prices, the sensitivity of the cash flow to a range of prices should be carried out. Methods of reducing price risk such as long term contracts or, in the case of gold, forward selling should be carefully evaluated. The People risk is rarely discussed in feasibility studies, but can be a key element. Few projects turn out to be faithful copies of the study and the ability of the operator to identify

An optical instrument designed for the on-line measurement of the size distribution of coarse particles (3-500 mm) being transported on a conveyor belt is described. Included is a discussion of the measurement technique, as well as test data verifying the legitimacy of the basic sensing approach. Field data indicating the instrument's ability to make useful measurements in an industrial environment are also presented. Applications in the mining and mineral industry, for which this instrument was orginally developed, are outlined, with particular emphasis given to the areas of crushing and grinding control.

Improvement in profitability would need significant improvements in operational performance. Consequently, over the last few years, there has been a major focus amongst some mining companies to imbibe Operational Excellence. This has been only possible because of the replacement of a silos based approach by an integrated view of the organization. Such an integrated view is now possible via the evolving digital technologies. Even so, such a transformation calls for a change in culture, which, for most organization is not trivial. Attempts in the past to integrate functions such as through Mine-to-Mill initiatives in the mining industry have demonstrated significant benefits to many operations (McKee, 2013). Still, sustaining these benefits has clearly been a challenge due to manpower turn over and lack of proper systems and structures that integrate information between business functions within an operation and between operations and the corporate.Opportunities The advent of digital technology has opened-up opportunities to integrate inter-departmental information for a unified understanding of, and across, an entire organization. The advances in instrumentation, equipment control systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA/Historian) and industrial networks have helped in the direction of enterprise wide integration. The availability of real time information across an enterprise has given rise to numerous possibilities to improve organization performance. In 1950 Kaiser Steel Corporation acquired control of the Utah Fuel Company, a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah. The mines at Sunnyside have been producing high quality coking coal since the late 1890's. Kaiser Steel acquired the coal deposits at Sunnyside in order to supply the necessary coke for its steel plant at Fontana, California. The Sunnyside coal deposits are made up of two mineable beds, the upper and lower Sunnyside seams. Both seams outcrop along the southward facing escarpment of the Book Cliffs. The coal seams dip under the massive sandstones of the Book Cliffs to the northeast at 5 to 22 pct., with the steepest-part being near the outcrop. Mining at Sunnyside up to 1961 had been carried on with room and pillar methods. The deep cover and rotten roof conditions, along with the need of increased tonnage, required a change of mining technique. Numerous ideas were presented, discussed, and economically analyzed. Several people involved in these discussions, with the aid of W.W. II, had been introduced to the European methods of coal mining, namely the longwall technique. The European mines had long been plagued with near similar conditions as those at Sunnyside, particularly the deep cover problem. The longwall method seemed to be working very well under these conditions, and with the extensive studies given longwalling by the Kaiser Steel mining officials, it was decided to give longwalling a try.

Optimal sizing of a ventilation shaft is a classical subject in mine ventilation economics.. The shaft size is optimized by minimizing the sum of shaft-construction and ventilation-power costs, or owning and operating costs. The length and air quantity of the shaft are held constant, and the location of the shaft, affecting its depth, and construction and ventilation power costs, is not considered (Hartman, 1961; Lambrechts, 1974; Wang et al., 1978). This paper proposes an approach by which the location and size for a new pair of shafts (intake and return shafts) are optimized for a coal-mine ventilation network. Specifically, the problem is to determine the location and size for a new pair of shafts, and the distribution of air between the new and old shafts so that the combined cost of shaft construction and ventilation power is minimized. The shaft length or depth corresponds to the height of overburden at any shaft location. To simplify the problem, the shaft locations will be limited to the line along the main or submain entries, and the connection entries at the shaft bottom neglected. In order to calculate the ventilation-power cost, the air power of the system should be determined. This in turn requires the calculations of the air quantity and pressure of each fan in the network, satisfying Kirchhoff's laws and Atkinson equation. After obtaining the air power, the cost calculation is straightforward. In the following, we shall assume that the resistances of all airways, and the quantity for each mining section, which is controlled by adjusting the air regulator, are all known. The resistances for the shafts are determined from the estimated friction factors, and shaft dimensions and lengths. Furthermore, it will be assumed that the fans can be selected to meet the duties called for by any network solutions.

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, annual aggregate production in the United States amounted to about 50 million short tons. Today annual aggregate production is nearly 2.5 billion tons. Over a third of the States in the country produce more aggregate than the Nation did at the turn of the century. I would like to describe some of the historical events that allowed this nearly 50 fold increase in aggregate production. You might wonder why I want to talk about history. Some of our best ideas lie buried in the past, waiting to be rediscovered in the present. Almost every issue that the aggregate industry experiences today has been recognized for at least a decade; many of those issues have been recognized for a half a century; and a few of them have been recognized for nearly a century. The main reason for this article is to save the past from the forgetful indifference of the present-to faithfully preserve the past, to illustrate the insights of our predecessors, and to demonstrate how little of what we know today is really new.
