When you think of the state of Maine, you probably think of lobsters or lighthouses. The last thing you would think of is metallic mineral mining, and that is for good reason. According to the Maine Geological Survey?s website, ?no metals have been mined in Maine since 1977.? Moreover, Maine?s metallic mineral mining laws and rules, which were last rewritten in 1991, have effectively made mining in the Pine Tree State impossible. Statutory changes enacted in 2012, however, put Maine on a path to make metallic mineral mining part of the local economy in the near future. History of metallic mineral mining in Maine Currently, Maine is not a metallic mineral mining state, though that has not always been the case. The 1800s saw various mining operations in Maine, including what the Maine Geological Survey calls a ?mining boom? from 1879 to 1882, where mining of iron, silver, copper, lead and zinc expanded rapidly. Mining and mining activity in the more recent past, however, drove the debate before the state legislature when this issue was debated in 2012.

"Most, if not all longwall gobs contain explosive gas zones (EGZs), i.e., zones of explosive methane-air mixtures that can cause – and have caused – mine fires and explosions. If the coal is prone to spontaneous combustion, oxygen penetration into the gob must be avoided. This paper summarizes the significant research findings from five years of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling research conducted at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) under funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). CSM Researchers have developed CFD modeling techniques to identify where and under what circumstances EGZs can form in longwall gobs and how EGZ formation and oxygen penetration depend on the ventilation method, face and bleeder ventilation parameters, injection of inert gases and the operation of gob ventilation boreholes. Recognizing these explosion and fire hazards is an important first step in improving the safety of longwall coal mines. CSM modeling research has shown that EGZ formation can be effectively controlled by adjusting ventilation parameters, choosing the proper ventilation pattern and injecting inert gases where necessary. INTRODUCTION In a project sponsored by the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have examined gas compositions and flows in longwall gobs in order to assess explosion and fire hazards. Since gob areas are inaccessible, researchers developed a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical modeling tools to characterize these hazards. A variety of CFD models were developed to cover progressively sealed as well as bleeder ventilated gobs for both coal and trona mines. The explosion and fire hazards posed by EGZs in longwall gobs can be summarized as follows.• If the EGZ lies closely behind the longwall face, flames and pressures from an explosion can penetrate the shield supports and reach the active face area, creating blast trauma, burn hazards and toxic, unbreathable atmospheres. • EGZs can be pushed around inside the gob by roof collapses and cave-ins. If they get pushed out into the face area, sudden methane inundations and explosion hazards in face areas can result. • Fresh air flowing into the gob can create an explosion hazard as the gas composition in the gob moves from fuel-rich inert to explosive, creating EGZs. • Ignition sources inside the gob can be frictional ignitions or spontaneous combustion. • Bleeder ventilated gobs are surrounded on all sides by an EGZ that forms along the fringe areas between the fresh-air ventilated bleeder entries and the methane-rich interior of the gob. It is suspected that diffusion flames can propagate rapidly along these EGZ fringes if an ignition occurs"

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

The recent spate of catastrophic events at U.S. mines raises the question as to whether or not the mine safety and health system in the U.S. is broken. The prescriptive regulatory regime in the U.S. is not a cure-all for a broken system. Without totally dismissing the contribution of a prescriptive regulatory approach, this paper argues that safety in the U.S. mining industry would be enhanced if the nation adopted a scheme that provides a balance between specification standards and two alternatives: performance and systems-based standards. This would allow effective and flexible means to continuous health and safety performance improvement. Mine operators, regulators and politicians could then go beyond thinking that compliance alone equals strong safety by creating a proactive system that emphasizes continuous improvement. By adopting performance and systems-based standards, exemplary safety and health performers can be recognized, allowing regulators to focus their efforts on those without sound occupational safety systems and who have substandard safety performance. In 1873 Barton tines Corporation mining Garnets for Abrasives. From providing bulk Garnet Concentrate the technology has advanced to the sizing and classification of micron sized particles utilizing a Barton process. Processing of Garnet involves extensive quality control at all steps, first to insure product purity and secondly to insure the correct size range. Barton Mines produces about 30 different sizes of Garnet products to lead the world in the manufacture of technical abrasive Garnet. This paper will examine the present technology of Garnet Abrasive Manufacture and the specification to which the sizes are produced as well as some of the markets served.

"The Haile gold mine in South Carolina is increasing the automation level of its processing plant in order to improve operational stability. One step toward this goal is the application of a digital twin concept to provide virtual instruments. Haile has engaged Andritz to implement virtual instruments at its grinding area hydrocyclones and at its tailing thickener underflow pump. These virtual instruments provide density values in a traditionally difficult location for reliable slurry density measurement. The digital twin is a first-principles integrated design engineering with advanced simulation (IDEAS) simulation model, connected in real time to the control system. Results have been promising, with the virtual instrument values matching the physical instrument under normal operating conditions and showing better prediction under upset conditions. Haile plans to use the virtual instruments as optional process control parameters.OceanaGold’s Haile gold mine is located near Kershaw, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC. This location was first mined in 1827 and has produced gold through several operating periods since then, including a heap leaching operation from 1985 through 1992. In October 2015, OceanaGold acquired Romarco Minerals, the previous owner of the Haile operation.The current operation began in 2017 as an openpit mine with additional underground resources. The nameplate throughput is 5,760 t/d (6,350 stpd) ore, and 2017 production was 3,345 kg (118,000 oz) gold, with 3,968 to 4,384 kg (140,000 to 155,000 oz) gold expected in 2018. Proven and probable reserves exceed 85 t (3 million oz) gold at a grade of 2 g/t (0.06 oz/st) gold. The process, as shown in Fig. 1, includes a primary jaw crusher, comminution with a semiautogonous grinding (SAG) mill and ball mill circuit, flash flotation, rougher flotation, regrinding, pre-aeration, carbon-inleach leaching, carbon elution and regeneration, cyanide recovery, electrowinning and refining. The Haile operation’s inaugural gold pour took place Jan. 20, 2017. Mine life is expected through the year 2030."

Reserve estimation is a process that commences with sampling and culminates in the issuance of a reserve statement. The tin, gold and diamonds that occur as marine placers on the continental shelf are low grade with very erratic mineral distributions. Sampling, using a variety of special equipment, determines the extent and grade of the mineralization. The sample size is important, especially for diamonds. Together with the sampling density, it determines the accuracy of the grade estimate. Bulk sampling is a confirmatory process. The choice of mining equipment, either new or developed from onshore activities, dictates the unit costs, the cutoff grades and the selectivity of extraction. Thus, the size of the blocks that comprise the mining plan and the reserves are determined. A variety of estimation methods of different reliability are available, with the most sophisticated being kriging. Dilution and losses during mining must be taken into account in estimation, and a grade-volume curve should be constructed. Diamond deposit estimation also involves an extra variable, the dollar value of the stones. During and after mining, essential feedback on the accuracy of un estimation may be given by the RIE factor and by a mineral balance. Reserve estimates are required for several reasons and may be subject to public disclosure. The use of the correct definitions is, therefore, important.

It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

During the last century the importance of coal as a natural re- source has frequently come to the attention of the general public, but never before nave circumstances combined to focus as much attention on coal as it receives today. There is the ever increasing demand for energy that can be met only by coal consumption, coupled with a growing awareness of man's potential for despoiling his own environment. Society monitors the use of the remaining resources with an increasingly critical eye and, for obvious reasons, surface mining operations tend to draw an unusual amount of public attention. While the surface mine is a successful economic competitor with other uses of the earth's outer skin, one of the unrewarding results of such activity is tile simultaneous destruction of two of our most important resources--the coal seam and the surface soil. In a relative sense the coal seam is a nonreplaceable resource but the surface soil can be restored. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to land reclamation and even less has been devoted to the restoration of a productive surface soil. The research reported in this paper was de- signed to test the relative productivity of newly reclaimed surface mine spoils in western Illinois. The results are preliminary in nature but may aid in the future redevelopment of mine spoil soils in the Illinois Coal Basin.

"While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicting deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life.Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations when there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar-flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar-flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar-flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines.New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed-deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar-flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines.This article provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines.Operating tailings pipelines with a depositTailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit."

The modem open pit-heap leach operation by Pegasus Gold Ltd. at Zortman and Landusky in Phillips County, Montana, is a new chapter in the mining of gold in these districts. The discovery of bulk tonnage ore bodies and their development and ultimate production was based on a long history of mining and exploration in that part of Montana. Gold was originally discovered in the Little Rocky Mountains as placer deposits by Pike Landusky and Lou Myers. This discovery in the 1880s was not significant, but Pike Landusky continued prospecting for lode deposits, and he eventually located the Gold Bug and Little Ben, two of the larger Au-Ag producers in the district. Eventually two camps, Landusky and Zortman, grew in the LittleRocky Mountains. By the time Landusky was killed in 1894 by Kid Curry, the district was still a discontinuous small producer. Steady production commenced in 1907 with the organization of the August Gold Mining Co. Eventually high grade ores on specific veins were exhausted by selective underground mining and the district was idle by May 1942. After World War II in the early 1950s. E.A. Scholz tried to continue selective underground mining, but he realized the stockworks surrounding the larger veins constituted bulk tonnage targets. Ultimately in the 1976- 1979 period he organized two exploration efforts, one each for the Landusky and Zortman areas, and brought these into production as the Argo and Pegasus gold mines. By the time of his death, Apr. 8, 1980, both operations were producing gold. Later the two companies were merged as Pegasus Gold Ltd. Upon the death of Scholz, V.F. Hollister continued as the geological consultant, Ed Roper was engaged as general manager, and J. J. Crowhurst was given the responsibility of executive vice president. The discovery of open pittable ores and the application of heap leach technology was important in the development of mining. Both contributed to the low cost operation that continues to this day. The attached article by L.M. Rogers, then chief geologist, and M.S. Enders, his assistant, describes the geology of the deposit. It was presented at the Northwest Mining Association meeting in 1982.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. "The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater Conveyance Sewer is part of the Phase 3 Major Combined Sewer Overflow projects to be scheduled as part of the City of Omaha’s Long Term Control Plan (LTCP). The system features a 6,100 foot long, 14-foot inside diameter tunnel to provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed and future LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The tunnel will operate as a pressurized system and convey flows of up to 2,500 ft3/s resulting from a 10-year, 24 hour storm event. This paper provides a synopsis of the project with a focus on the overall design aspects related to siting the tunnel alignment in an urban environment, the hydraulic analyses performed to choose a pressurized system rather than an open channel system, and expected geologic conditions. Tunnel alignment and profile and geological profile are presented, as well as an overview of the construction related impacts considered during design. PROJECT BACKGROUND The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater (MLSW) Conveyance System will provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed, and future, LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The project location is representatively shown on Figure 1; the overall conveyance system is represented in Figure 2. The MLSW Conveyance System consists of three separate construction contracts under Contract Numbers: OPW-52004 – The Storz West Detention Basin to 31st & Paxton Tunnel; OPW-52454 – The Storz West/Pershing Detention Basin Grading and Improvements; and, OPW-52752 – The Pershing Detention Basin to ML Outfall Channel. This paper focuses on the project covered under Contract OPW-52004: design and construction of an approximately 6,110 feet 14-foot inside diameter (ID) tunnel, constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The tunnel will receive flows from the Paxton Boulevard (PB) and the John Creighton Boulevard (JCB) Stormwater Conveyance Sewers and convey the flows to the Storz West Detention Basin, resulting in CSO volume and flow rate reductions to the Minne Lusa Outfall Channel and the North Interceptor."

INTRODUCTION R&D activities are needed, at a minimum, for a company's competitive survival followed in importance by the growth and diversification of the company. For most industrial companies, however, R&D is the business area that has been the most difficult relative to confident long-range financial commitments and effective control and relative to its value as a long-term investment. Investors look not only at the current profitability of the company but increasingly at the plans, actions, and quality of the personnel in position to improve the market position and profitability of an organization. "The strongest predictor of investment value is the degree of innovation of the 'company.' I believe this is true of both strategic planning and R&D activities." R&D is the lifeblood of a company's future. If this basic premise-R&D for survival and growth-is believed to be true, why is it necessary to "Sell R&D in your organization? My personal experience, in a number of organizations, is that R&D budget is perceived as a business element area that could be delayed or reduced to improve the bottom line during difficult business conditions. I believe the following quote speaks volumes about this subject-"There is only one thing I know for certain about research, and that is it costs money-lots of it." -Unnamed, Hard- headed Financial Executive. A business must make money and be profitable in order to maintain and create jobs, pay taxes, cover working capital and costs of goods sold, and most importantly, create value for its shareholders. The foremost element of selling R&D, therefore, is to consistently demonstrate the R&D group's contribution to the bottom line.

These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

"Coal mining is an age-old method of power production in the world. It is also widely known for the associated risks during mining. Although the number of mishaps has dropped dramatically over the years, the number of fatal accidents is still a concern, and any aid in reducing these figures would be important to industry workers. Therefore, data from accident reports during the past seven years were collected and analyzed. Qualitative data from reports and articles provide a deeper understanding of the incidents, thus affording the possibility of identifying patterns and relationships between the accidents. For this study, a total of 119 fatality accidents occurring in U.S. coal mining operations were analyzed using advanced text mining techniques. The fatality data were obtained from U.S. Mine Safety and Health Admininstration fatalgram reports. This analysis is primarily exploratory in nature and uses term frequencyinverse document frequency (TF-IDF) methodologies along with correlation network plots. An interesting word relation pattern was obtained that identified “positioning” as the common cause of 12.6 percent of accidents, and found that 29.4 percent of accidents can be categorized as vehicle-related. IntroductionIn the mining industry, accidents are situations that employees and employers wish to avoid. They are devastating experiences to the victims and their coworkers alike. Even worse, accidents that result in fatalities create trauma and undesirable repercussions. Several measures have been taken throughout the industry to prevent such mishaps, and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provides continuous monitoring for miners’ safety by guiding organizations through best practices in every job role. As a result, according to MSHA, there has been a steady decline in the average number of deaths due to accidents over time. Nonetheless, any opportunity to avert one more such casualty is of paramount importance, and that is the goal of our analysis. Our objective is to identify opportunities resulting from previously unexplored directions in order to provide additional insights into potential safety recommendations. Until now, most of the studies in this area had been conducted using structured and tabulated data with a constant number of categorical and numerical variables. Unstructured text data mining is an emerging area that is still insufficiently researched and has a feasible scope for important results, as a vast majority of human communication and cognizance is comprised of words. The aim of undertaking this project by capitalizing on unstructured data is to analyze the text reports to discover potential relationships that explain the causes of accidents in new light in order to mitigate the occurrence of fatalities. The analysis in this project is based on textual data obtained from the MSHA website (2017). Individual accident reports are organized according to the date and year of the fatality. Each report includes details with images of the incident. For convenience, a simplified summary of the report is also available. Data collection consisted of gathering formal documentation of fatal accidents in the coal mining industry during the past seven years. These reports were extracted from the website in text format."

Boling Dome. a piercement salt dome in the Texas Gulf Coast basin is (was) the single largest deposit of native sulfur in the Western world. Total sulfur production has been over 81.000,000 long tons and the mine is still in production. Data from over 60 years of operation and 8.000+ wells reveal a salt dome rich in history as well as minerals. Sulfur mineralization and production correlate well with caprock structure and morphology. The occurrence of Mississippi Valley-type deposits in fracture zones is notable in some areas and may warrant additional study. DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION HISTORY Boling Dome is located in the south- east corner of Wharton County, Texas, 60 miles south-west of Houston. It is a piercement type dome in the Houston diapir province. It was discovered in 1922 when the county surveyor noticed sour gas seeps along the San Bernard River (Haynes. 1942). Several companies including Gulf Production Company. Humble, Texas Company, Sun and others quickly began drilling for oil and gas. Traces of native sulfur were reported in cuttings from many wells penetrating the caprock, but the first commercial quantities of sulfur were not found until Gulf Production's E.M. Chase 3 and 4 wells were drilled in 1927. Texas Gulf Sulphur, then mining sulfur at Gulf Dome in Matagorda County, secured the sulfur rights from Gulf for $3 million in cash and half of the profits after expenses for development and construction of plant and townsite were met (Haynes, 1942). The drilling results from 200 or so Wells revealed a massive deposit destined to become the largest single source of native sulfur in North America. Original reserves were estimated at just over 46 million long tons and were increased in later years. Production by the Frasch method was begun by Union Sulphur in 1928, and continued by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in 1929, and Duval Sulphur Co. and the Baker Williams Co. in 1935. Union produced 8,009 long tons, Duval produced 571,123 long tons, and Baker Williams produced 1,453 long tons. Through its deal with Gulf, Texasgulf acquired the largest and best mineralized portion of the dome and has produced 88,544,466 long tons through 1990, and production is planned for several more years. That amount of sulfur is equivalent to a cube measuring 1,152 feet on each side, or a sulfur highway 1 foot thick, 20 feet wide and 14,479 miles long. Peak production averaged 8,376 ltpd in 1948. A price war between North American sulfur producers and Mexican sulfur producers in 1956, followed by the recession of 1957 and 1958 (Haynes, 1959) coupled with a rapid increase in mining depth to below 700 feet began a gradual production decline that was never reversed (Figures 1 and 2).

Many studies have been made of the microflotation of quartz (1,2,3,4,5,6) and alumina (3,5,6, 7,8) using various anionic and cationic hetero- polar hydrocarbon surfactants as collectors. A few studies have been made on these minerals using amphoteric hydrocarbon collectors ( 9,10, 11,12) and only a few studies have been made on the use of fluorocarbon surfactants as flotation collectors (13,14). The present investigation compares microflotation response of the two minerals in hydocarbon and fluorocarbon collector systems of the anionic, cationic and amphoteric types. An attempt is made to relate flotation response of the minerals to their electrokinetic behavior and the pKa values of the collectors.
