As part of a research program to develop a coal-handleability index that would predict the ease with which a coal would flow through a handling system, an apparatus was developed to directly measure the unconfined Yield strength and bulk density of consolidated-coal samples. The new test apparatus provides a fast and simple method for determining the strength and compressibility parameters that are associated with the handling characteristics of crushed coal. Comparative tests were conducted using a low-stress triaxial-test apparatus. To check the accuracy of the new method, four coals with a variety of moisture contents and gradations were tested using the new method. These tests indicate that the new test device yields valid results. Further, the speed and ease of operation of the new device makes it suitable for quality control and quality assurance in plants.

"Air inversion is a meteorological phenomenon generally occurs during winter times. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for health and safety of miners. Mine operations cease if the concentration of NOx or CO exceeds the threshold limit value (TLV) of the pollutants. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Studies of the turbulence parameters suggest that effective ventilation of the pit and removal of pollutants can be accomplished if a large enough mixing length in the open pit can be created. Turbulent mixing by eddies of different length scales under an inversion layer is product of wind shear, thermal gradient and buoyancy. The main result of turbulence is mixing of the atmospheric profile and transport of momentum. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Simulation results of a novel mitigation approach using cloud cover will be presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION In extreme climatic conditions, deep open-pit mines tend to trap pollutants at the pit bottom due to air inversions. Keeping open pits adequately ventilated is a considerable challenge for the mining community. Mine operators in cold regions are very familiar with this problem, the severity of which can be judged from Figures 1 and 2. The top portion of the figures show clear sky and snow covered benches. The brown haze, containing various contaminants accumulated over time in the pit under the air inversion, can be seen in the bottom portion of the figures. Several Arctic or subarctic mines have reported air inversions. Even Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon pit in Utah has reported local air inversions from time to time [1].Mitigation of pollutants in deep open-pit mines in the Arctic is a challenging task. Release of pollutants below the inversion height in an open-pit mine during periods of weak winds and consequently weak vertical mixing may result in very high concentrations of primary and secondary pollutants, causing serious consequences for human health. Mine operations cease if the concentration of any one of the pollutants (NOx or CO) exceeds the TLV. Sustained cessation of a mine operation has serious economic consequences. For continued mining operation, the levels of pollutants must be below the TLVs. If no significant synoptic meteorological situation changes during an inversion, a warm air mass sits over the cold air mass within the open pit. Artificial ventilation is required to dilute the pollutants to an extent that mine workers can safely resume work. Some of the early approaches in artificially ventilating open pits were attempted in the USSR. Most of the studies by Soviet researchers suggested the use of turbojets and turbo-propeller engines, airscrews, axial pit fans, and meteotrons [2, 3]. However, the majority of these studies were only theoretical in nature, with no evidence of an approach that really worked in practice."

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

In the context of this session on "Practical Placer Mining," a projection of the present into the future first assumes that there is a future for Placers. The second assumption is that there is the combination of adequate reserves and a willing, mining investment source to finance placers. This paper will point out the opportunities on both assumptions, illustrating my positive position on the future of gold placers. In order to focus this paper more effectively, I have chosen GOLD as the subject mineral. However, it is recognized that much of the technology for exploring and mining gold placers has been applied to other alluvial deposits; including platinum, diamond, tin, and various industrial minerals (which are often referred to as "placers" though this contradicts historical definitions). Over the past 10 years I have presented several papers on the general subject of placers, most of which are listed under References. These have included topics such as exploration, evaluation, small-scale gold placer mining and decision-making, mining and processing equipment designs, and dredge-mining operations. In an attempt to identify the more promising, undeveloped placer potentials in the world I have usually mentioned the USSR and China but qualified them as being either inaccessible, or, politically difficult to obtain. However, with recent developments in the USSR, the obstacles appear to be somewhat diminished.

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. United States Steel Corporation's Winifrede Mine is operated by Lynch District in the mountainous region of Eastern Kentucky. This region is characterized by narrow mountain ridges and precipitous slows which present both an opportunity and challenge in the design and selection of coal handling facilities for the movement of coal from the section belts to the railroad cars. The narrow finger ridges precluded use of underground haulage and, thereby, presented the opportunity to use high capacity equipment on the outside bench. The precipitous mountain slopes, steepest at the Winifrede seam horizon, presented a challenge to select a solution for lowering the coal approximately 1000 feet from the seam level to the valley floor railroad load-out point. It was evident from the start of planning that these two factors predominated; namely, rail haulage and coal lowering, and solutions to these would determine the final design of the Winifrede Mine coal handling facilities.

Decreasing ore grades and increasing labor and material costs have seriously eroded the economic vitality of many mining operations. Coupled with global economic stagnation and recession in the early 1980's, these conditions have forced reevaluation of operating strategies and methodologies with the objective of remaining competitive in a world marketplace. A concept offering large potential benefits is hardrock portable crushing and conveying. Implementation of this system at Duval Corporation's Sierrita open pit copper-molybdenum mine (Figure 1) has significantly reduced mining costs, becoming a major part of Sierrita's cost reduction strategy. Located 48 km south of Tucson, Arizona, the 209 000 t/d property has one portable 60x89 gyratory ore-crusher in operation with tentative plans for two additional units.

The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. In many parts of the world deep level mining relies heavily on the use of refrigeration for providing safe thermal underground conditions. The trend in South Africa in recent years has been to locate the refrigeration plants on surface and to use these plants to chill water that is then distributed throughout the mine. The surface cooling installation normally consists of a pre-cooling tower in which water is first chilled before it is sent to one or more refrigeration plants for further cooling. Presently, the majority of these refrigeration plants use CFC refrigerants; however, to conform with the Montreal Protocol, these plants will have to be replaced or converted for use with alternative refrigerants. The optimum design criteria for installations using the new generation of refrigerants will be affected by their characteristics and are likely to be different from those currently in use. In light of these developments the industry is examining a number of alternative systems for future installations including water vapour refrigeration. Factors that affect the decision on the type of refrigeration system to be used in mine installations are reviewed. INTRODUCTION Gold mining has been carried out in South Africa for over 100 years and most of the reserves close to surface have been mined out; this has led to mining taking place at greater depths, approaching 4000 m below surface. One of the consequences of operating at these greater depths is that it is necessary to install refrigeration plants to cool the ventilation air so as to provide safe and healthy working conditions. With the current low precious metal prices there is pressure on mines to cut costs and in recent years there has been considerable effort devoted to the design of more cost effective and efficient refrigeration plants and cooling systems. In the last 10 years there have been many studies into the use of ice for specific applications (Eschenburg et al., 1986; Hemp, 1988 and Ramsden and Lloyd, 1992) and at present there are three ice making plants in operation on South African mines, each of which produces ice in different processes. In addition, detailed design studies have been carried out on the "split ammonia system" (Napier and Patterson, 1992). In this refrigeration system the evaporator is located underground close to where the cooling is needed, whilst the condenser and heat rejection system is on surface. As far as refrigeration plants are concerned the trend has been to move away from standard package units to custom built refrigeration installations. This has given the design engineer greater flexibility in the choice of key components for refrigeration installations. For example both screw and centrifugal compressors are used, the heat exchangers for the evaporators and condensers may be either plate or shell and tube, and in a number of installations evaporative condensers are used. In addition, the following refrigerants are in use, R12, R22 and ammonia. The acceptance of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments by the South African government will restrict the use of CFC refrigerants and it will be necessary to re-evaluate various refrigeration systems, including those that do not use conventional refrigerants, such as air cycle and water vapour systems, for new surface installations. Although new systems and refrigerants are being developed, only the following refrigeration installations will be compared in this paper: - a refrigeration system using R134a which has properties similar to R12 - refrigeration system using R22 or a new alternative refrigerant with very similar properties - an ammonia refrigeration system - a water vapour refrigeration system The benefits of new cooling systems are not discussed in detail, since they are largely mine specific and outside the scope of the present paper. Since the optimum design for an air cycle system (del Castillo, 1988) is dependent on the mine layout, this system is also not included.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to develop a process for recovering a marketable grade of tungsten from the brine of Searles Lake, Calif. The brine contains only 56 parts per million of tungsten (70 ppm WO3). Using ion exchange resins synthesized by Bureau chemists, 98 percent of the tungsten was extracted from the brine and 92 percent of the tungsten vas recovered as a marketable iron-tungsten concentrate containing 44 percent tungsten as tungsten trioxide. Although major technical problems have largely been resolved, research is progressing to escalate testing in a process investigation unit to provide more reliable data for an economic appraisal.

The White Cliffs diatomite deposit occurs in a lacustrine facies of the Quiburis Formation, an Upper Miocene to Pliocene basin-fill sediment of the lower San Pedro Valley. On-going geo-logic mapping has defined an 2.5-3.0 m (8-10 ft) thick ore zone near the mill site, several marker beds, a NNW-trending high-angle normal fault, and a NW-trending syncline. The diatomite has an average loose-weight dry bulk density of 130 kg/m3 (8 lbs/ft3) and is presently marketed outside Arizona for asphalt filler. Current development is projected to yield 3500 mt (4000 st) of finished product, with an estimated 91,000 mt (100,000 st) of finished product obtain-able from several other nearby sites.

"Replacing the aging roadway access to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, thereby ensuring traffic safety and robustness in case of seismic occurrences, provided an opportunity for major design improvements as well as the development of a parkway that would include the construction of four new tunnels. With an eye to the future, the Doyle Drive replacement project aimed to meet the highest standards for environmental stewardship beyond regulatory requirements. Understanding that lighting equipment is the tunnel‘s subsystem that uses the most energy, the operator was looking for a sustainable solution to light the tunnels. An Intelligent Lighting Control System (ILCS), designed specifically for road tunnels, was acquired to individually control the almost 2000 luminaires lighting the four tunnels. This paper will show the results in terms of energy and operational savings generated over the nine months of operation between the commissioning and the conference in April 2016. INTRODUCTION Electrical & mechanical (E&M) equipment represents an average of 10 % of a tunnel total construction cost. Once the civil infrastructure completed, E&M equipment drives the main part of the expense during a tunnel useful life. Table 1 below describes the impact of various types of energy consumption and their cost impact in tunnels of less than 500 m. It is clear that lighting is the sub-system that requires the most energy. A good lighting strategy is the key to reducing energy consumption due to lighting and a viable solution that will bring important savings in tunnel operations.With a price of $0.14/kWh in California and a planned increase between 3% and 6% per year during the period 2013-2040, the tunnel operators could not afford to overlit the tunnels—particularly when they have to operate it for the next 30 years. However, they also need to maintain the right lighting level to ensure driver safety all the time. The Presidio Parkway project includes the Battery tunnels, which are 240 m (790 feet) and 230 m (750 feet) in length, and the Main Post tunnels, which are 280 m (920 feet) and 315 m (1030 feet) in length."

The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Interior, is currently investigating strata interactions associated with the mining of multiple coalbeds. Strata interactions due to subsidence are a result of undermining. This study involves underground investigations at a mine where room and pillar panels are actively being developed through an area of the Sewickley Coalbed which was subsided by undermining of the Pittsburgh Coalbed. Research to date indicates that undermining had little effect on upper mine pillar stability, but had a more severe effect on the development and maintenance of entries. Roof-to-floor measurements recorded over four times more convergence in entries developed over gob as compared with entries developed over support pillars in the lower mine. Consequently, this has led to major roof falls in the active panels, resulting in considerable production delays and supplemental roof support costs.

A pilot plant investigation of a semi-autogenous mill - ball mill circuit is described. The plant was operated with minus eight-inch diabase as feed material to the semi-autogenous mill. The semi-autogenous mill recycle screen underflow was put to a ball mill in closed circuit with a cyclone. An operating Work Index of 13.3 to 14.9 was obtained with the pilot ball mill. This Index is substantially in agreement with the scalped feed laboratory Work Index for 15.3 for recycle screen underflow. The Bond Index of the diabase was 15.8. Thus, one may use the scalped feed laboratory Work Index to size semi-autogenous grinding plant ball mills.

The El Sauzal deposit is a classic, high sulfidation, epithermal gold system located in southwestern Chihuahua State, Mexico. The prospect was discovered by a Francisco Gold Corp. geologist in1995. El Sauzal was encountered as a result of an extensive grass-root exploration program in the rugged, dissected volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre Occidental, around the historical Batopilas Silver Camp. At El Sauzal, high grade gold is hosted within a series of more permeable, low-dipping, lithic and fine-grained dacitic rocks of early Tertiary age. The mineralization appears to be both structurally and lithologically controlled. The alteration characteristics are typical of a high sulfidation system including kaolinite, illite, alunite, dickite and pyrophyllite. The deposit’s gold distribution, as recorded from drill-hole data and surface samples, varies from 0.2 to 650.0 g/t. The estimated geological resource, as calculated from an independent study completed in 1998, was 3.0 million oz @ 2.03 g/t including a minable reserve of1.8 million oz @ 3.3 g/t.

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

INTRODUCTION In the past three decades, world trade has grown from less than $100 billion per year in the years following World War 11 to slightly more than $300 billion in 1970 and over $2,000 billion in the early 1980s. Adjusted for inflation, the real growth of world trade in 1972 dollars increased from less than $175 billion per year in the early 1950s to slightly more than $342 billion in 1970 and almost $700 billion per year by the early 1980s. Thus trade as a whole has increased a little more than twofold in real terms in the past decade." Mineral commodities constituted approximately 20% of the value of total world trade in 1970, and significantly more than that proportion in terms of physical volume. By 1980, de- spite rapidly rising petroleum prices, mineral commodities accounted for roughly 18% of the total value of world trade. Crude oil alone ac- counted for about 16%, making it the single most important commodity in international trade. The worldwide recession of 198 1- 1983 brought a dramatic decline in both volume and price of crude oil, shrinking the impact of mineral commodities to roughly 10% of the value of total exports, worldwide, in 1982- 1983. The decline of mineral commodities as a pro- portion of the value of world trade in the decade 1970- 1980 is due largely to the increasing importance of manufactured goods and consumer products such as automobiles and electronic items. During this period, mineral commodity trade expanded roughly sixfold in terms of current dollars to an estimated $350 to 360 billion in 1980. This was equivalent to doubling the real value of mineral commodities in international trade in the 1970- 1980 period in constant dollars. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has expanded the traditional definition of mineral commodities to include semifinished products such as iron and steel (in addition to iron ore), refined metals such as copper, lead, zinc, aluminum, and tin, concentrates, scrap, and petroleum products. Since large quantities of essentially mineral derivatives travel in this form, it is reasonable to use these expanded definitions in stating the role of minerals in world trade. Thus minerals in world trade comprise 30 to 33% of total export trade in all commodities during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.1). In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the value of all mineral commodities consumed in the world (at the national level) and compares this value to total worldwide commodity consumption. By this system, mineral commodities range from 30 to 40% of all commodities consumed each year in all countries during the period 1976- 1980 (see Table 1.3.2). The growth in export trade in mineral commodities by commodity group is shown for the period 1976-1980 in Table 1.3.3. These data parallel the swings in worldwide economic activity during the same time period. By any of the above measures, minerals, especially the fossil fuels, constitute a significant proportion of both total economic activity and
