The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

The U.S. coal mining industry consumes a significant amount of energy, primarily diesel fuel and electricity. The continuous global increase in energy demand, high energy prices and environmental issues related to carbon dioxide emission represent a substantial challenge for the mining industry. This paper presents the result of research on development of an integrated data environment system for analysis of energy consumption in a surface coal mine. A case study on an operating surface coal mine is carried out to demonstrate the practical application of the developed system. The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to help provide the answers to the crucial questions of when, where and how much energy is being used. This developed system represents a framework for efficient management of energy consumption.

Control of coal dust has long been an important aspect in the conventional mining of coal; the main reasons being from a health and disaster standpoint. With the advent, of mechanized longwall mining, the control of dust has required more attention due to the high extraction rate common to most longwall systems. The purpose of this paper will be to describe the dust abatement activities of the longwall operation at Sunnyside. Kaiser-Steel Corporation has three mires located at Sunnyside, Utah, with a total production averaging 6,800 tons of clean coal per day. Of this 6,800 tons, 71 % is mined with continuous miners, the remaining 29% coming from one longwall unit located in No. 3 Mine. Our first longwall panel was started in November, 1961. In October, 1966, we started mining our seventh panel. The present panel is located in the Upper Sunnyside Seam which averages five feet in thickness, but does get as low as 51 inches. The seam pitches 5.5% in this vicinity. The roof is generally good and is comprised of 10 inches of shale cap rocs overlain with sandy shale and sandstone. The floor is sandy shale and is quite undulating in nature. The present panel is 3,800 feet in length with a face of 670 feet. The major equipment employed on our longwall unit is a 125 H.F. Anderton Shearer-Loader, British Jeffrey Diamond armored conveyors and a Dowty self-advancing-roof support system. The Anderton Shearer in use on our longwall unit has a 60" diameter x 27" cutting drum. During the shearing cycle, it traverses the face at 20 feet per minute with a cutting rate of 7.5 tons/minute.

The term "finite element analysis" is heard and seen in print a great deal these days; a few words on what precisely it is are in order. In the broadest sense, finite element analysis is an application of an idea developed by a nineteenth century mathematician named Rayleigh. His basic idea was to decompose any problem in mathematical physics into a large number of simpler problems, solve the simpler problems, and then put those solutions together to form an approximation to the solution of the original problem. The scheme works nicely because of two features: first, much of the difficulty in solving practical problems of mathematical physics stems from irregularities in the boundaries and the simpler problems can be chosen with regular boundaries and second the smaller problems are solved for small physical areas where simple approximations of the solution do not differ much from the true solution. In the narrower sense, in which we are now interested, finite element analysis is a technique of using imaginary simple structural elements to construct analytical models of real structures. A direct parallel with the Rayleigh approach exists since the "finite elements" have simple boundaries and are restricted to simple behavior within a single element. Although the correspondence between Rayleigh's ideas and finite element analysis is now widely recognized, the computational tool, as it has developed over the last thirty years, comes not from the discipline of physics but rather from that of structural engineering. The Thunderbird plant was erected in Sullivan County in Indiana during 1958-1959. It was first put in operation in March of 1959. At the present time the source of the raw coal is from the Indiana No. 6 seam. The underground operation at present consists of two continuous mining units and two conventional units. The underground is all belt haulage and the first unit with which this paper is concerned is the slope belt. It is a 48-inch-wide inclined belt with 980-foot centers and a lift of 275 feet. The belt is powered with a 350 H, P, motor and has a rated capacity of 600 Tons per Hour. The belt is equipped with a Merrick Scale Company Weightometer, The raw coal moves from the belt to a 6'x12' extra heavy Allis-Chalmers Ripl-Flo equipped with 6" round-hole screens. The over product of the screen is fed into a 10'x20' long McNally- Pittsburg rotary breaker equipped with 4-l/2" round-hole screens. The oversize rock is discharged into a bin that is emptied with a refuse truck. The through-product of the breaker, along with the through-product of the Ripl-Flo, passes either directly to the McNally Giant washbox or to a 36" belt that transports it to a 1000-ton storage bin,' The change from either to the washbox or to the storage bin is made by use of a motorized gate controlled by the plant operator,

Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. The paper accepts the premise that surface mining should attempt to minimize environ-mental damage and to maximize future alternative uses of land by appropriate reclamation. I. The Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) includes a 2.7-mile long, 18'-10" internal diameter tunnel which is located inWest Seattle. Tunneling in urban areas and soft ground conditions (Till and Till-like soils in Seattle) is associated with the risk of settlements, especially in presence of groundwater above the alignment. The Designer foresaw the use of soil improvement (jet grouting) outside of the launch shaft to mitigate the risk of flowing ground and to provide a redundant sealing. The Contractor proposed and ultimately successfully executed a different approach by using a “Steel Bell System” or Pressurized Can as described in this paper.

This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.

The City of Toronto's Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors (NTC) ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. 120 m of Starter tunnel and 70 m of Tail tunnel were excavated with roadheaders to help with the launch of the TBM and as part of the contract base scope work. JayDee Canada in Collaboration with Everest Equipment Co. developed an innovative approach to design and build a stand-alone Ring Machine Erector nicknamed Enterprise to erect precast segmental lining in Starter and Tail tunnels in lieu of Cast-In- Place concrete. This paper describes the design and provides feedback on the innovative procedure used to install the rings.

The use of radioactive gages in beneficiation plants is relatively new However, enough applications have been made so that it is now possible to positively state that these gages have definitely progressed from a laboratory device to a very rugged and reliable on stream process measuring instrument. Gamma Ray Gages of the type presently being used in the beneficiation industry consist of three basic components: (1) A source of radiation (2) A radiation detector (3) An electronic amplifier The source is usually a radioisotope such as cesium-137, or cobalt-60. This source, adequately protected and ruggedly mounted, is most commonly placed on one side of a pipe or vessel. The radiation detector is then mounted on the opposite side, Since the absorption of gamma radiation as it passes through various materials is a function of the density of the material, the change in radiation measured by the detector is proportional to the change in specific gravity of the product in the pipe or vessel. One popular type of detector in use today is a cell which converts radioactive energy directly into electrical energy1. This electrical energy, when amplified, presents a usable output for metering and control devices. There are, of course, many other components which are part of a working gamma gage installation, such as zero compensators, lead shielding, mounting brackets, equivalent absorbers, etc.

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

A sampling program was conducted in 2008 to determine the run of mine characteristics of 5 coal seams. The sampling program included size analyses and float sink determinations. The samples were analyzed for ash and mercury concentrations for each size and gravity fraction. This paper will report on the sampling program, the analytical results, and the correlations determined in the data set investigated.

Fluorine is a lively element in both its chemical and economic behavior. It was not isolated as an element until 1886 by Moissan. However, its principal source to this day, fluorspar, was known and its special merits recognized long before that time. Our own mining brother, Agricola, is credited with having named fluorite, the mineral name, in 1546 from the Latin, "fluere", to flow. It made things melt and was already being used as a flux. Because fluorspar has been found as a relatively common gangue mineral in metal ore veins, it has long attracted the attention of geological thinkers seeking to, explain the whys and wherefores of veins. Fluorine has been thought of as one of the principal mineralizers, holding metals in ascending vein solutions for deposition close enough to the eventual surface to be accessible for profitable mining.

The long hole open stoping (LHOS) method is widely used in underground mining. While methods to predict stable stope geometries are well established, the ability to maintain a stable back often assumes effective ground support across the full stope span. The efficacy of the support strategy is dependent on rock jointing, quality, density, top cut width and height, and the type, amount, and orientations of bolts installed. However, it is becoming increasingly common for operators to assume narrow top cuts in service of wider stope spans with minimal bolting coverage. Failure to account for the required top cut drift size and support requirements can ultimately lead to raveling type instabilities along stope shoulders that result in back collapse. A new method has been developed to evaluate the minimum top cut dimension necessary to accommodate wider stope spans with various rock bolting configurations. Due to the economic impacts of top cut development and support, this is a critical consideration in the accurate costing and scheduling of a LHOS operation. Tables 1 lists the acronyms are used throughout this paper.

The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

Hydraulic concentration of minerals has been practiced for a good many years. Until recently, however, the practice has been limited to a multiplicity of small pockets and relatively low tonnages and flows. The adaptation of the SiphonSizer to the concentration and classification of magnetite has changed this concept. Some fifty commercial units are currently in operation on magnetite, varying in size from 16 ft diameter circular unit to a 25 ft by 100 ft rectangular unit. Additional units up to 38 ft diameter are under construction. Depending upon the application in the flowsheet, upgrading-varies from 0.75% to 14% Fe in a single stage. To those not familiar with taconite processing, the importance of the struggle to economically remove as much silica as possible may not be fully appreciated. These figures pertaining only to transportation may be thought-provoking. If a 10,000,000 ton per year plant could reduce the silica content of their concentrate by 17, a savings in boat freight alone would amount to 100,000 tons at $2.00 per ton annually.
