The mining industry has made strides in planning for operations to be safe for the workforce and public, to protect the natural environment, and to maximize value for shareholders. However, many of the techniques used to accomplish these goals are based on estimated models of mineral content, production efficiency, and economic performance. The industry has begun to recognize the need for understanding the uncertainty in these models, how it affects their decisions, and what the potential impacts are for each project. The challenge has become how technical professionals can effectively communicate the impact of this uncertainty and its importance to both technical and non-technical audiences. This paper presents mining engineers (and other technical professionals) with traditional and modern principles of data visualization and technical communication that can assist with communicating the effects of uncertainty in the mine planning process.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

A project's rates of return (RORs)1, be it the internal rates return (IRRs) or one of the many IRR surrogates, frequently needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency an ROR- approximation procedure depend on the quality the approximation-initiating parameters, such as bounds or seed values (guesses). The existing approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses suggested by intuition rather than supported by mathematical considerations. This paper presents three mathematically founded ROR-bounding and eleven ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability by using examples of typical project cash-flowpatterns (CFPs). The calculated bounds and guesses not only improve the approximation efficiency, but also allow the process of the ROR discovery to be automated, thereby making it more convenient and reliable.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

The difficulties encountered in justifying replacements for over-age mobile mine equipment at the Gay Mine are common to most mining operations. More critical management reviews, resulting from ever rising capital expenses, increased such difficulties. These increased difficulties are especially apparent to those who are primarily operators and are not statisticians, mathematicians, or computer oriented. The Gay Mine is located 17 miles east of the town of Fort Hall in southern Idaho. This open pit operation annually supplies the J. R. Simplot Company and the FMC Corporation with 1.5 MM - 2.0 MM tons of phosphate ore. Stripping ratios average approximately three bank cubic yards of waste per ton of ore mined. The mobile mine equipment fleet consists of ten 24 yard scrapers; twenty-one 30-50 ton end dump trucks; four 32 42 yard shovels; fifteen dozers in the D-8 and D-9 classes; and three road patrols. Equipment replacement is based on the results of evaluations made on individual units. Authorization of capital expenditures for equipment replacement is dependent upon a favorable profitability index (true rate of return on investment) plus a favorable payout time. The system is based on cash flows and requires the determination of (1) the net cash outflows in the form of capital expenses plus (2) the expected cash inflows resulting from reduced expenses and depreciation tax credits. After adjustments for taxes and the time value of money, the net amounts are used to calculate the required indices. The basic elements for the system related to the replacement of mobile mine equipment include: (1) the determination of dollar penalties to be expected from the continued use of aging equipment; (2) the selection of equipment that will provide the greatest return on the investment dollars; (3) the quantification of the expected savings; and (4) the calculations of the prescribed indices. The Shoreline Consolidation Sewer is a CSO control project in Cleveland, Ohio that requires the installation of 5,000 feet of 72-inch inside diameter pipe using microtunneling methods. After award, the contractor submitted a value engineering proposal to eliminate two deep shafts and install the tunnel in two drives instead of four. In an example of successful collaboration, owner, contractor, and engineer worked together during the initial construction stages to modify the design and update the contract documents. This paper examines the importance of exible requirements in contract documents and a collaborative environment between all parties to successfully deliver a project.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

"The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

Current scrubber capacities vary from 1.89 to 4.72 m3/s (4,000 to 10,000 cfm), and there is interest in using scrubbers with capacities up to 6.61 m3/s (14,000 cfm). This paper describes research to compare the effectiveness of blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems using high-capacity scrubbers with flows up to 6.61 m3/s. Tests were conducted in a surface ventilation gallery with exhaust and blowing systems operating under similar conditions. The mining machine was equipped with a machine-mounted scrubber. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face and measured at several face locations. Effectiveness of exhausting and blowing systems was compared by determining average face methane concentrations. For each operating condition tested, blowing ventilation was more effective than exhausting for controlling face methane levels. Raising scrubber flow to 6.61 m3/s reduced methane levels for both blowing and exhausting systems.

The roles of organic matter in ore deposits are complex and represent a specialized effort in the larger subject of the geochemistry of ore deposits. The organic carbon cycle can be considered with particular emphasis to ore deposits in order to understand the origin and genesis of the organic matter. Organic matter may play one, several, or none of the following important roles in the formation of ore deposits: leaching, transport, concentration, reduction, and precipitation of metals. For deposits that contain organic matter, detailed field relationships and laboratory characterization of the organic matter are required to make an ore deposit model that Includes the organic matter and specifies its role(s). Examples of the involvement of organic matter in several types of uranium deposits are contrasted as being direct or indirect, syngenetic or epigenetic, and necessary or unnecessary. Examples of organic matter in deposits containing gold and lead-zinc, and In metal rich shale are discussed with respect to ongoing work and critical questions.

The first cement plant of TITAN Cement Co was founded in Elefsis in 1902. It was the first cement industrial facility to operate in the Balkans and in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Currently have four cement plants in Greece producing 5.4 million tons per annum, and 25 ready-mixed concrete sites producing 1.4 million m3 annually. It has a total of 20 quarries, 14 of which are producing materials used in the making of cement while the remaining six produce aggregates used in the production of ready-mixed concrete. All plants in Greece are accredited for ISO 14001. The restoration of quarries began in 1976 at the company?s limestone quarry of the Patras plant, and was soon extended to all quarries. At that time, a department responsible for all environmental issues was established. To date, over 700.000 shrubs and trees have been planted and maintained at quarries, plants and ready-mixed concrete facilities, while over 100,000 trees have been donated to municipalities, communities, customers and to the Greek state.

Resumen ¦ Un sistema de comunicaciones “a través del suelo” (TTE) comercial y disponible fue evaluado en una mina de carbón subterránea en la zona Este del Estado de Kentucky. Este estudio de campo fue realizado como parte de una evaluación multisitio mayor de sistemas TTE disponibles. La mina detallada en este estudio se encontraba paralizada al momento de la evaluación, lo que proporcionó la representación más cercana a la realidad del medio ambiente en una mina luego de una operación de cierre. Para este estudio se probaron las comunicaciones superficie a subterráneo y subterráneo a superficie. El despliegue estándar del sistema TTE usando los procedimientos recomendados por el fabricante logró obtener comunicaciones claras y nítidas entre el socavón y la superficie. Otras disposiciones de las unidades arrojaron resultados mixtos. Existen planes para examinar más los fenómenos observados en esta mina.

The advantages derived from the use of pellet burdens in blast furnaces are so great, that hematite ores are being converted into pellets in greater quantities each year. The conversion of these ores into pellets appears on the surface to be relatively simple. In reality, this is not so. Serious difficulties are encountered in drying these pellets that do not exist in the drying of taconite concentrate pellets. The ores that present problems are goethite and earthy hematites. Green pellets prepared from these ores have very law shock temperatures, 200-600° F. The shock temperature of a green pellet according to our definition is the highest initial temperature to which a green pellet may be exposed without suffering decrepitation. Decrepitation may involve spalling, fracturing or total disintegration. The poor shock properties of these green pellets result from the inability of the vaporized water to escape freely and easily as it is formed with¬out affecting the integrity of the pellet. As a consequence, the pellets must be carefully dried prior to induration. This careful treatment is costly. The slow drying process restricts productivity and requires larger furnaces than desired. The use of an additive to elevate the shock temperature of the green pellets would increase productivity. Bentonite is used in some pellet plants to improve balling but it raises the shock temperature only slightly. Nalco became interested in the shock temperature problem because of its activity in the development of organic pelletizing aids for taconite concentrates. The findings reported here are an outgrowth of our experimental work on the development of shock temperature additives.

Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.

At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

A 200 pound per hour Magnex Pilot Plant was designed and constructed. A non-compliance Eastern Coal which would generate more than 2.0 lb of SOZ per million Btu upon burning was brought into compliance (less than 1.2 lb of S02 per million Btu) during continuous operation of the pilot plant. Approximately 85 percent of the pyritic sulfur was removed while recovering 86 percent of the Btu of the feed coal. Pilot plant operation is summarized and preliminary economics presented. Present status of the Magnex Program is reviewed.

Using a mine roof simulator press capable of duplicating the expected magnitude of vertical and horizontal forces experienced by underground mine roof supports, load capabilities of some roof support cribbings were measured. Comparative ultimate vertical support strengths are reported for cribs of old and new timber and nonreinforced and steel-fiber-reinforced (SFR) concrete blocks. In terms of load- bearing capability, cribs of new hickory and nonreinforced concrete blocks have about equal strength, and SFR concrete blocks are three times as strong. Wood aged 2 years underground lost 43 pct of its support strength. These data were obtained during the course of the initial familiarization exercise of the complex press.

INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. "A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an underground coal mine in eastern Kentucky. This field study was conducted as part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems. The mine detailed in this paper was idled at the time of the study, which provided the nearest practical representation of a postevent mine shutdown environment. For this study, surface-to-underground and undergroundto- surface communications were tested. Standard deployments of the TTE system using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations. Other arrangements of the units yielded mixed results. Future experimentation is planned to further examine the phenomena observed at this mine IntroductionThe ability to establish effective communication between surface and underground personnel after a mine event is essential for both evacuation and rescue efforts. Current wireless underground communication technologies are reliant on intermediary physical infrastructure, such as antennas and repeaters, to enable underground communications. As such, communications are easily disabled during a mine event because of the inherent vulnerabilities to physical damage (Damiano, 2012; National Academy of Engineers, 1970; Yenchek et al., 2011). A true emergency communications system would function regardless of a mine’s physical state. Through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication technology only requires the use of a single transmitter and a single receiver to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata. With this capability, TTE systems have the potential to serve as a true emergency communications platform."
