This study aims to investigate the effect of combined mechanical and ultrasonic milling on the size reduction of talc. Firstly, the talc sample was wet ground in a stirred media mill for five different times (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min), and the optimum result was subsequently achieved with treatment by ultrasonication. The effects of amplitude (20, 35, and 50 μm), solid content (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%), and sonication time (60, 120, and 240 min) on the sizes of the final product were investigated. The pre-milling by wet grinding caused a decrease in the grinding resistance of talc. Sequential ultrasonic treatment, which was applied to the talc sample, generated smaller particles in comparison to those acquired by stirred media milling alone. Experimental results were assessed based on the product particle size (d10, d50), reduction ratio, and specific energy consumption. Submicron particles prepared by ultrasonic treatment were perfectly stable compared to stirred media milling alone as investigated in terms of particle size. In addition, the effects of mechanical and ultrasonic milling on structural properties of talc particles were characterized by XRD analysis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of amino acids (glycine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, lysine and tryptophan) and organic acids (citric, malic, tartaric, fumaric, oxalic, succinic and ascorbic acid) on gold extraction from silicate ore. Use of amino acids to extract gold was preferred compared with organic acids due to the presence of carboxylic group and amine groups in amino acids. Among the assessed amino acids, aspartic acid and glutamic acid had higher capacities to extract gold due to their structures, which lacked aromatic rings and long side chains. Organic acids could also extract gold. In particular, oxalic and succinic acids had the greatest capacity to extract gold versus the other tested organic acids. Moreover, aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold from ores than the same concentration of succinic acid. We confirmed the aspartic acid and succinic acid functional groups by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The findings revealed that aspartic acid had a greater capacity to extract gold than succinic acid due to the presence of both amine and carboxylic groups (succinic acid contained only a carboxylic group). The optimal gold:aspartic acid molar ratio was 1:6 and low concentrations of aspartic acid extracted 35–42%of gold from silicate ore within 15 days. This can be used as an alternative to traditional methods for extracting gold from ore; it is non-toxic to human health and environmentally friendly.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

"An average of 1.2 fatalities occur per year in underground coal mines in the United States when a miner is struck or pinned by a remote-controlled continuous mining machine. Proximity detection technology provides a means to prevent these types of accidents by disabling all machine motion when a miner is in close proximity. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed the intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system, which continuously tracks the position of miners near the machine and disables only those machine motions that could cause a pinning accident. This system, previously demonstrated using non-permissible proximity detection hardware, has now been shown to be effective when implemented using an MSHA-approved system as a platform. Performance tests have shown accuracy, repeatability, and stop zone identification to be comparable to or better than the system demonstrated with non-permissible hardware. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining room-and-pillar operations typically use Continuous Mining Machines (CMMs), such as the one shown in Figure 1. When CMMs first became available, they were operated from an on-board operator’s compartment that protected operators from roof falls and other hazards but severely restricted visibility and subjected them to machine vibration and high levels of dust and noise. To solve these problems, remote controls were developed to operate CMMs. Now CMM operators are free to position themselves for best visibility of each mining task and are no longer subjected to the rough motion of the CMM during mining operations or the dust and noise generated by the machine. However, this technological advance removed operators from the protection afforded by the operator’s compartment and exposed them to the hazard of being struck or pinned by the CMM or other large moving machines."

During the past ten years a number of papers have appeared describing zeolite occurrences in the western United States in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, altered bedded Tertiary pyroclastics, playa lakes, hot springs, and amygdaloidal basalts. With the emergence of natural zeolites as economic industrial minerals it appears, useful to develop a system of classification to delineate those zeolite deposits of economic interest which were not discovered until the middle 1950's. The first attempt at a classification of naturally occurring zeolites was made in 1914 by Lindgren l when he classified the zeolites into eleven groups based on their mode of occurrence. The zoned zeolites in the Mesozoic rocks of New Zealand and elsewhere were classified according to the mineral assemblages by Fyfe, et al.2 in 1958 as a zeolite facies corresponding to low grade regional metamorphism. In 1966, Hay suggested as an alternative to the preceding classification one which would "classify as diagenetic all mineral assemblages produced in sedimentary rocks under conditions in which zeolites are formed." In this paper a classification is proposed with the objective of providing an overall perspective of the zeolite occurrences in the western United States.

The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on the evaluation process. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mine. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

"A Yieldable Structure for Use in Areas of High Rock Stress & Deformation." Rock stress of up to 9000 psi have been recorded in the mines of the Coeur d'Alene Mining district. Associated with these large stresses are rock fractures and deformation. In order to maintain openings required for mining, large wood preparation structures are constructed to provide access to the work areas for men and materials. These wood raise preparation structures are costly to construct and maintain. Therefore a steel-foam concrete structure was designed and proposed for testing which would be less costly to construct, require no maintainence and maintain its structural integrity while allowing up to 53 inches of wall rock deformation.

Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized long wall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3DTM seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis. This paper focuses on the application of RockVision3DTM technology for delineating hazards caused by stress and geologic anomalies. Case studies for two bump-prone coal mines will be discussed. For example, (1) in a German deep (>1,130 m) mine, the drilling-yield method was used to verify the effectiveness of this technology in detecting stress anomalies ahead of longwalling; (2) in a Polish mine (-500 m deep), two longwall panels 4 km apart were monitored to assess structural and stress-related factors contributing to differences in mining conditions and magnitude of structural failures.

Industrial Mineral Fillers, LLC. is in the initial stages of mining and processing Anorthosite (CASPAR TM) at its CASPAR mine located in Soledad Canyon, Los Angeles County, California The CASPAR is being mined from the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. Preliminary results suggest that CASPAR is a desirable alternative to silica sand used in construction applications, such as, stucco, grout, abrasives, and other uses including filtration and golf course recreation sands. With the use of standard ore dressing techniques, CASPAR is suitable for use as a filler in paint, plastics and rubber. Environmentally, CASPAR has advantages over silica sand, in that, there is no detectable Free Silca.

The objective of the Cerrejon Coal Project is to mine and export a minimum of 15 million metric tons per year of bituminous coal from the Guajira Pennisula in Colombia, South America. Major components of the project will include an open pit mine, 150 km railroad, marine terminal for storage and shipping, and accommodations for the support personnel. This paper primarily reviews the coal handling facilities at the mine and port which will include crushers, conveyors, silos, stacker/reclaimers, and a shiploader. Of special interest is the design concept for unloading bottom-dump railcars, a programmable controller control system with automatic stacking and reclaiming, a linear-type shiploader, and 2.4m wide conveyors running at 5 m/sec.

"Since 1984, the date of the first recorded fatality involving a remote controlled continuous mining machine, 38 miners in the United States have been killed when they were struck by a continuous mining machine. Proximity detection is a valuable tool for preventing fatalities, and the use of these systems is expected to significantly improve safety. Proximity detection provides a means to prevent accidents like these. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of underground tests to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of proximity detection systems under a number of conditions such as varying the orientation and height of the personal wearable device (PWD), moving the PWD close to the trailing cable, and activating the machine’s mining mode. At the 2014 SME Annual Meeting, results from tests on first-generation proximity detection systems were presented. This paper will provide results from the similar tests performed with second-generation systems. The results show that performance has improved. For example, the negative impact of PWD orientation and the trailing cable has been reduced. However, some inconsistencies remain. Notably, performance changes dramatically when mining mode is activated. INTRODUCTION Since 1984 there have been 38 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM) [1]. In August 2011, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a proposed regulation that would require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines [2]. Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHA-approved proximity detection systems are commercially available. MSHA estimates that of the 38 fatal striking and pinning accidents that have occurred since 1984 involving CMMs, the use of proximity detection could have been a preventative factor in at least 28 cases [1]. Furthermore, MSHA estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [3]. NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system [4] and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs [5,6,7,8]. In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate [9,10] and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators [11,12]."

The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents with particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and the conditioning time were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating on the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power P, to the minimum power Pm' required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P /P m ratios. At higher P /P m ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect on it. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a 74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 (47 rad/s) rpm. Under the optimum conditions of mixing, recovery was improved at low collector dosages and short conditioning times.

Throughout time, the mining industry has been very successful in meeting the world's requirements for metals and materials while meeting the challenges of decreasing ore grades and increased emphasis on protection of the environment. This success has been due to the development and implementation of new technologies. A clear example of such a development over the past 25 years is the increasing use of leaching/solvent extraction/electrowinning for the recovery of copper from oxide and sulfide ores. The key to the successful introduction of this technology was the discovery and development of the hydroxyoxime liquid ion exchange reagents by General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Corporation). An important role was also played by the close working relationships between General Mills Chemicals and Ranchers Exploration which resulted in startup of the first plant in 1968 and between General Mills Chemicals and Bagdad Copper which resulted in the startup of the second copper SX-EW plant in August of 1970. Following on the heels of the hydroxyoxime development came the commercialization of other new chelating reagents based on different chemical functionalities, i.e., beta-diketones, alkylated 8- hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamidoquinolines. This initial spurt of activity was then followed by a slowing of development in terms of new reagent functionalities. Activity has continued in terms of further optimization/improvement of existing reagent functionalities but the commercialization of new reagent functionalities has slackened. This observation reflects the fact that the development of new reagent functionalities for metal recovery has become increasingly more expensive such that the right combination of price and sales volume must exist in order to justify the investment required to bring a new reagent to the market place. Given the dependence of the mining industry on innovation to meet the needs of the future, one can ask how these new developments, particularly in new reagents, will occur. "Phosphogypsum is a byproduct created during the production of industrial wet-process phosphoric acid. This study focused on recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from a Florida phosphogypsum sample and investigated the effects of removing detrimental impurities such as phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ), uranium (U) and fluorine (F) during the leaching process. Experimental results indicated that REE leaching efficiency increased rapidly, reached a maximum and then began to decrease with sulfuric acid concentrations ranging from 0 to 10 percent and temperatures ranging from 20 to 70 °C. At a sulfuric acid concentration of 5 percent and leaching temperature of 50 °C, REE leaching efficiency obtained a maximum value of approximately 43 percent. Increasing the leaching time or liquid/solid ratio increased the leaching efficiency. The leaching efficiencies of P2O5, U and F consistently increased with sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, leaching time and liquid/solid ratio within the testing ranges. A fine-grain gypsum concentrate, sized smaller than 40 µm, was separated from leached phosphogypsum through elutriation, in which the P2O5, U and F content levels were reduced by 99, 70 and 83 percent, respectively, from their content levels in fresh phosphogypsum. IntroductionPhosphogypsum is a byproduct generated during the industrial wet process of phosphoric acid production, in which sulfuric acid is used to digest phosphate rock. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), the main component of phosphogypsum, usually accounts for 65 to 95 percent of phosphogypsum by weight.There are small quantities of impurities in phosphogypsum, such as phosphates (H3PO4, Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O, CaHPO4·2H2O and Ca3(PO4)2), fluorides (NaF, Na2SiF6, Na3AlF6, Na3FeF6 and CaF), sulfates, trace metals and radioactive elements (Rutherford, Dudas and Arocena, 1996). Global phosphogypsum generation is estimated at 200 Mt/a (Parreira, Kobayashi and Silvestre, 2003; Yang et al., 2009), but only about 15 percent is recycled as building materials, agricultural fertilizers or soil stabilization amendments (Tayibi Choura and Lopez, 2009)."

For thousands of years gold has been not only a commodity, valued for its comparative scarceness, immutability and homogeneity but also a medium of exchange which has no nationality. Approximately 90% of the gold produced is still accessible in the world, although some of it in museums, galleries, jewellery and dental work is not immediately available for circulation. The majority is held as bars by central banks for their reserves; the balance circulates as coinage or bullion held for investment. The value is further enhanced by the political aspect that gold cannot be debased as paper currency can and, therefore, it always becomes an investment refuge. It has always been possible to buy and sell gold at a price which is readily established by reference to bullion's weight and purity; and it is this fact which makes a loan denominated in gold, rather than one in currency, a viable alternative means of finance. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some general aspects of what is considered to be one of the more effective and presently popular methods of financing the development of a gold mine - the gold loan. This is not intended to discuss all the minute details which must be uniquely designed to fit each individual situation, but rather to provide general guidelines. You will all be aware of the traditional sequence whereby companies primarily finance exploration work by the raising of equity through the sale of shares to the public or by that unique Canadian form.

Massive banded Fe-Zn-Cu-Pb sulfide deposits in the Bagdad are associated with metamorphosed eugeosynclinal mafic volcanic and intrusives rocks Precambrian age. The geologic environment is very similar to that of the Jerome-Prescott area which lies 70 km. east of Bagdad. Mining of massive sulfides deposits began in 1917 on the Copper King mine in spite of its early discovery and the discovery of the Old Dick mine in 1882. The first shipments of zinc ore from the Copper King were hand sorted and averaged 46.89% Zn, 5.7 oz. Ag, 3.58% Pb and 1.68% Cu. Oxidized copper was first produced from the Old Dick mine in 1943~ In all, five deposits of massive sulfide ores have been mined in the Bagdad for a total production of nearly 2 million tons with an average grade of 12.0% Zn and 3.6% Cu. The largest deposit, the Bruce mine is currently closed because reduced metal prices and has produced a total of 823,000 tons of Zn-Cu ore to date. Mining of massive sulfide ore in the Bagdad area is presently idle. However, the potential for locating yet undiscovered ore bodies is good. Exploration for new ore bodies is difficult at best due to the complex geologic history of the area, the small size of individual ore bodies and lack of understanding as to the formation of massive sulfide deposits. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain a better understanding of the host rock formations through detailed geologic mapping, petrography and chemical analysis.

Federal and state regulations, in an effort to reduce acid rain, are becoming increasing more stringent regarding sulfur content of fossil fuels. Whereas coal from Illinois and Ohio contains between 1.5 and 37. sulfur, Wyoming has billions of tons of coal reserves containing less than O.5/% sulfur. However, much of Wyoming's coal is high in moisture, 25-30%, and low in energy, 8,200 to 8,900 BTU, vs. 10,500+ BTU for Illinois and Ohio Basin coals. Wyoming currently ships in excess of 130 million tons of coal to utilities as distant as Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. With freight charges ranging from $12.00-$20.00/ton, more than $1.5 billion a year is spent to transport water. A test shipment of more than 50,000 tons of Wyoming coal has recently been made from Mobil's Cabello Rojo Mine, south of Gillette, by Burlington Northern to the Robert's Bank British Columbia coal terminal for transloading and shipment to Taiwan Power Company. This coal assayed approximately 8,400 BTU/lb. and 277. moisture. Carbontec Energy Corporation feels the future availability of dried coal containing 11,000+ BTU could substantially enhance the potential export as well as the domestic market for Wyoming coal. Large and small utilities, along with industrial furnaces require tens of millions of tons of Wyoming, West Virginia, and other Eastern The federal government is encouraging the expenditure of hundreds of million of dollars by utilities to retrofit their boilers to allow them to burn higher sulfur coal. This program, if carried to completion, would cost many tens of billions of dollars, with the net result being high power costs sustained by the utilities. These costs will be passed on and paid for by the American consumer. A sensible alternative would be the burning of low sulfur coal by the utilities, without costly capital and operating expenditures. Carbontec Energy feels the successful operation of a Carbondry Coal Drying Plant in Wyoming will be the forerunner to other similar and larger operations in the State. CARBONTEC RESEARCH The activities of Carbontec's personnel to develop a viable process to dry sub-bituminous and lignite coal goes back some 14 years; in fact, for some of us it goes back to 1962 when we were involved in a program under which lignite coal from Truax Trayer's Velva mine was placed in low sulfur coal, which are burned alone or blended with high sulfur, Midwestern coal. Carbontec believes that a high BTU. reasonably priced, shippable coal fuel produced in Wyoming and delivered at costs competitive with Eastern low sulfur coal, could offer substantial benefits to Wyoming coal producers, utility customers, and to the State of Wyoming.

Several alternatives are available for treating lover grade gold ores averaging 0.04 to 0.10 ounce per ton. These include heap, vat and agitation leaching and may involve conventional zinc precipitation or carbon adsorption-electrowinning systems. Each of these processes have their inherent economic and operating advantages and disadvantages and the selection of the optimum method for a given gold ore is solely based on economic evaluation of the applicable processes. In this paper an effort is made to provide engineering feasibility estimates for the above processes under varying operational conditions such as ore grade and price of gold.
