In 1989 an Autogenous Grinding Task Force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding at the National Steel Pellet Plant located in Keewatin, Minnesota. Pilot plant test work performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC) indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could feasibly be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing ten grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. The full scale test work conducted in 1990 and 1991 verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit utilizing pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits.

The Robinson Mining District near Ely, Nevada, is one of the major porphyry copper districts in the world. Within the district is an east-trending zone of altered porphyry, metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, and sulphide mineralization surrounded by Paleozoic limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone, Tertiary volcanics, and Quaternary alluvium. Six major disseminated ore deposits have been exploited in this eight-mile zone. About 20% of the district production has come from disseminated ore in metamorphosed sedimentary rocks found adjacent to altered quartz-monzonite porphyry. The following brief statements summarize the inter-relationship of porphyry, alteration, metamorphism, and mineralization: 1. Disseminated copper ore does not occur in unaltered porphyry or in unmetamorphosed sedimentary rocks 2. Sedimentary rocks have been only weakly metamorphosed where intruded, by unaltered porphyry. 3. Intensely metamorphosed sedimentary rocks are found only adjacent to, altered porphyry. 4. Many hydrothermal minerals are common to both altered porphyry and adjacent metamorphosed sediments. 5. Disseminated ore is found in altered porphyry and adjacent meta¬morphosed sedimentary rocks. 6. In general, there is a direct correlation between grade of ore in porphyry and copper content in the adjacent rocks. 7. "The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

The level of automation employed in flotation production is relatively low. In an actual concentrator, operators use their judgment to adjust the production state based on the visual characteristics of the flotation froth surface. There are shortcomings, such as strong subjectivity and lagging process operation, that easily cause the waste of manpower and material resources. Machine vision technology is introduced to replace human visualization, achieving a quantitative description of the visual characteristics of the froth surface. The state variable parameters are provided for the identification of the flotation conditions.

"The adsorption of mixed cationic/anionic surfactants with different molar ratios onto quartz was investigated. The cationic surfactant used was dodecylamine bromide (DDA), and the anionic surfactant was sodium oleate (NaOL). The critical micelle concentration values for the individual surfactants and their corresponding mixtures were determined using a platinum plate. The adsorption mechanisms of mixed surfactants on quartz were studied using contact angle measurements, flotation tests and adsorption amount measurements. At alkaline condition, NaOL depresses DDA flotation of quartz without depressing the adsorption of DDA. The molar ratio of mixed surfactants is found to be a key factor in the orientation of alkyl chains and thereby the flotation response of quartz. A mixture of 1/2 or 1/3 DDA/NaOL forms on the surface of quartz when the concentration of NaOL is higher than that of DDA. The adsorption of the mixture decreases the wetting of quartz since the alkyl chains are in chaotically orientation with a conceivable number of head groups directing towards the solution phase. These results provide important insights into the adsorption of mixed surfactants onto quartz surface. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is known as an effective method of separating mineral particles on the basis of their surface chemistry, specifically their hydrophobicity. [1]. The hydrophobic particles will attach to the bubbles and rise to the top of the containing vessel to form a froth that flows over the lip of the vessel. The hydrophilic particles remain in the liquid [2]. In the process, surfactant is often used as collectors for surface modification in order to change the wetting properties of mineral particles. The primary long chain alkyl ammonium salts are the most widely used as collectors for the flotation of oxide minerals, such as quartz, muscovite, hematite, phosphate and feldspar [3, 4]. Adsorption mechanism of alkyl ammonium salts on oxide minerals has been extensively analyzed [5, 6]. Generally, the ammonium salts are adsorbed through electrostatic interaction of the polar group of the molecules with the surface of these minerals [7]. Despite many obvious advantages of the ammonium salts in low temperature resistance and hard water resisting, however, their unavoidable drawbacks, such as high sensitivity and poor selectivity for slimes, relatively high cost, have limited their applications [8]. In recent years, mixed surfactants have drawn much attention due to their superior physicochemical and surface properties than single surfactants [1, 9-11]. They have been used in many industrial processes such as dispersion/flocculation, flotation, detergent, corrosion inhibition, cosmetics, foods, paints, chemical mechanical polishing, enhanced oil recovery, and nanolithography [12]. Most of the mixed surfactants have synergistic advantage in reduction of the surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC); therefore, they exhibit spurious properties, like excellent surface/interfacial activities, and are less expensive than single mixed surfactant systems [13, 14]."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemical Corp. developed a froth flotation process for concentrating potassium salts from Great Salt Lake solar evaporites containing about 5 percent K. The crude evaporites, which were predominately halite (NaCl) with smaller amounts of kainite (KCl.MgSO4.2.7H20) and schoenite (K2SO4MgSO4.6H20), were conditioned in a saturated brine solution, thus converting nonfloatable kainite to the floatable mineral schoenite. Schoenite was then selectively floated with a medium-molecular weight fatty acid. Continuous small-scale pilot plant testing indicated that 80 percent of the potassium could be recovered from the crude evaporites in flotation concentrates assaying about 11 percent K.

"Water drawn from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta provides water supply to 66 percent of California’s population and supports the state’s agriculture industry. The existing through-Delta water system is outdated and unreliable with environmental risk to some fish and wildlife species. The Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) has been established to environmentally retrofit and modernize California’s water delivery system through the Delta by restoring habitats, constructing new diversion points in the north Delta and providing a means to transport water supplies under the Delta, rather than through sensitive natural channels.Under BDCP, the Delta Habitat Conservation and Conveyance Program (DHCCP) has developed several alternatives to convey water from the Sacramento River in the north to the existing pumping facilities in the south Delta through an isolated conveyance system. The new conveyance system would become an integral part of the State Water Project (SWP) and the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) by transporting water to the export pumping plants for each of these projects. The DHCCP is managed by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), while state and federal water contractors provide technical support to the program.The initial conceptual study efforts on the overall program commenced in 2007 and examined various options for the proposed conveyance system. Several conveyance alternatives were analyzed at that time. The Conceptual Engineering Report published on Oct. 1, 2013 identified the modified pipeline/tunnel option (MPTO) as the preferred alternative to be included in the BDCP environmental documents. MPTO includes three river intakes and pump stations along the Sacramento River, various sizes of pipelines and tunnels, junction structures and two forebays that are capable of delivering up to 4 million gpm (9,000 cfs) from the Sacramento River to the SWP and CVP. The river intakes are located near Hood in Sacramento County approximately 64 km (40 miles) from Clifton Court Forebay (CCF) in Contra Costa County. This route would cross portions of Sacramento, San Joaquin and Contra Costa counties. Figure 1 depicts the configuration of the MPTO alternative."

Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

"Mine ventilation is in every underground mine a crucial process to ensure mine safety as well as acceptable working conditions. On the other hand is also a major cost factor depending on air requirement and air resistance. Due to the fact that the special layout of mines develop over time, ventilation systems change as well. This may result in complex systems which are suffering severe problems and low efficiency. With attention to the mine safety and costs, ventilation systems have to be controlled repeatedly and optimized continuously to fit changing conditions. The project “Improvement of ventilation systems in narrow vein mines” has been commenced with measuring and data collection in the Bogala Mine, Sri Lanka. This over 150 year’s old graphite mine consists of about 20 levels. The resulting ventilation system is highly complex and suffers problems like high temperatures and humidity as well as a mixing of fresh and used air on lower levels. To solve these problems and to optimize the system the complete ventilation system had been measured on-site first. The gained data have been used for simulations to develop and select an optimal and cost efficient solution. OBJECTIVE As an important process in mining ventilation is a major cost factor and can determine the economic feasibility of a mine. Due to the production mine layouts develop over time and mines increase in size and depth while the ventilation system becomes more complex and may suffer severe problems and inefficiency. Therefore mine ventilation systems have to be controlled and optimized regarding the general requirement of mine safety and health of the miners as well as the costs. Depending on the deposit type, depth, mining method, climate and as well corresponding laws and regulations the possible solutions are varying strongly. The work carried out paid special attention to the improvement of ventilation in narrow vein mines in tropical climate, in this case the graphite mine “Bogala” in Sri Lanka, South Asia."

The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

Blastings always generates induced vibrations through seismic wave, these are lost energy from the blasting and therefore causing the disturbance of slopes and structures near the blast source. Most of the components of an open pit mine have to reach a physical stability, especially during its closure process. Aiming to develop a vibration prediction model using the historical records from an open pit mine located on Peru, this research has two main focuses depending on the distance from the blast source to the structure: to protect the final slopes and to protect the villagers houses. Both are based on the Devine model of the Square Root Scaled Distance (SRSD) to predict the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). The Mid field model, where is found mainly final slopes from the pit, limited by the failure criteria of McKenzie based on the geo mechanical properties of the rock mass. The Far field model ranges distances where are located the most community households, limited by the German rule DIN 4150 for highly sensitive structures. Both scenarios resulted on a distribution abacus to limit the weight of used explosives to get the best operational advantage and structure safety.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. Results from the first part of a two-part investigation of the stability of highwalls in open-pit coal mines in the Paleocene Fort Union Formation of the western Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana indicate that these highwalls are subject to time-dependent deformation. Field investigations and laboratory physical properties tests of coal and overburden rocks suggest that several factors influence highwall stability. Some of these factors are rebound of overconsolidated rocks, desiccation, water, orientation and spacing of fractures, and strength and deformation properties. Factors of safety for a typical highwall in the study area (calculated by the finite element method) may be less than 1.0 when open fractures are present and the highwall has degraded. Although it is concluded that most open-pit highwalls in the Fort Union Formation within the study area have adequate short-term stability, these highwalls do deteriorate and become progressively less stable. Because of this, postmining failures are common and stability conditions could become critical if mining were delayed and then resumed after a period of several months. The second part of the investigation will utilize field measurements of rock-mass properties and instrumentation of actively mined highwalls to obtain data for comparison with the results of the initial investigation. Because the height of highwalls will increase as the more shallow coal is exhausted, these data will also be used to predict the behavior of slopes higher than those presently found in the western Powder River Basin.

This paper will detail the work that has been done in 1990 and 1991 at the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) on the development of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) patented Micro-Mag Process. This process entails the use of a micronized-magnetite (minus-10 microns) and water mixture for cleaning fine coal (minus-600 microns) in a cyclone, along with the production and recovery of the magnetite. Emphasis will be on the results from micronized-magnetite recovery testing using both conventional wet-drum and high-gradient magnetic separators in which several key operating conditions were varied including feed percent solids, magnetite-to-coal ratio, magnetite grade, and feed rate. Also presented will be selected results from testing done on a 76-mm diameter cyclone at a relative density of 1.50 showing the effects of operating pressure, magnetite grade, and medium-to-coal ratio on separation efficiency. In addition, two methods for producing micronized magnetite, along with the corresponding size distributions, will also be discussed.

National income originating compared to physical production for an enterprise or an industry reflects its ability to strengthen the national economy. For a single industrial sector or for an industry this comparison can be useful to reflect changes that may occur in this ability to contribute because of changing supply-demand-income-investment equilibria. A favorable relationship can be postulated by specified economic incentive, and the accompanying technologic input required can be shown. The new index proposes the use of the Federal Reserve Board indexes of production divided by the constant dollar income originating in the petroleum industry which reflects increases or decreases in performance. When compared with other mineral industries and with, total industry, an approximation of relative strength is evident. By constructing three different hypothetical conditions for future petroleum imports, assuming a constant excess capacity requirement for domestic production, and providing an estimate for future domestic demand for petroleum, the impact on the performance index can be shown. Thus, a strong position for the petroleum and natural gas industry can be stated. If this is done, it becomes evident that because of restrictions on cost-price relationships, a drilling program that would provide enough domestic oil to meet demand may not be practicable. By difference, the amount of improvement in methods of production and processing through technologic advancements can be stated explicitly.

Isotope analyses distinguish biogenic sulfur ores from non-biogenic ores, but do not distinguish bioepigenetic from biosyngenetic ores. Sulfur deposits of salt dome caprocks and of bedded Permian evaporites of west Texas, however, are clearly bioepigenetic. Anhydrite, introduced by salt diapirs into geologically younger sediments, is converted biogenically to sulfur and calcite in the presence of petroleum; for example, in Challenger Knoll, a salt dome at a water depth of 3600 m in the Gulf of Mexico. INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. Colorado nahcolite deposits, estimated at 29 billion metric tons, formed in an asp metric permanent-lake basin whose waters were rich in algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nahcolite (NaHCOg) occurs in oil shale of the Green River Formation (Eocene) as aggregates (62 percent), disseminated crystals (24 percent), and impure beds (14 percent). Because much of the nahcolite is nonbedded, it will be mined with oil shale and can be concentrated to marketable grade by crushing and screening Impurities in nahcolite are kerogen, quartz, pyrite, and carbonate minerals. A promising new market for nahcolite is in the process of removal of sulfur dioxide from industrial stack gases. When heated, nahcolite reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfate. Differences in thermally induced microporosity may explain why nahcolite is more reactive than trona, a possible competitor with nahcolite for SO2 removal. Limited production of nahcolite at one or possibly two localities is expected in the next several years, but large-scale production is probably at least 10 years away.

The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel (CBT) is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC. The scope of the CBT project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five large diameter (20 and 22 meter) storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the CBT to date and reviews the approach taken in both design and construction of the tunnels and shafts to mitigate risks and reduce cost and schedule of construction.
