INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. The adhesion of Leptospirillum ferrooxidans bacterial cells onto the sulfide minerals pyrite and chalcopyrite was evaluated using two different physical-chemical approaches; thermodynamic and extended DLVO theory. For the parameters incorporated into calculations, the zeta potentials and contact angles of powdered solids and bacterial cells were acquired experimentally. The Hamaker constants essential for Lifshitz-van der Waals inter-action calculations were calculated following two different methods: macroscopic and microscopic. Adsorption tests were carried out at physiologic conditions to estimate the amount of cells adsorbed onto a mineral surface and the extent of alteration of that mineral surface in biobeneficiation. The free energy of adhesion was found to be negative for both minerals, indicating that the adhesion is energetically favored and preferred. The interaction energy diagrams of the total interacting force was also negative for the cases where the particles were charged oppositely; in the remaining cases, the total force was attractive after overcoming an energetic barrier caused by the repulsive electrostatic forces. Under the conditions of the adsorption test, the experimental results are in agreement with the theoretical; this suggests that the physical-chemical forces are crucial for bacterial adhesion.

"Edge effect is a condition widely observed in High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) operations that gives rise to reduced comminution at the edges of the roll surfaces. This effect is caused by a reduction in the local crushing pressure at the edges of the rolls resulting from the sliding friction between the static cheek plates and HPGR feed material. Practically, this has an impact on equipment sizing, as the edge effect leads to coarser particles reporting to downstream equipment in open-circuit operations and increased circulating load and diminished HPGR circuit capacity in closed-circuit operations.To address this, Metso's HRC™ HPGR incorporates an Arch-frame to maintain a parallel relationship between the rolls and allow for the use of a flanged roll design. We conducted a series of pilot-plant tests with a 750 mm by 400 mm HRC HPGR to compare the performance of the flanged roll design against that of a traditional cheek plate arrangement under similar operating conditions. The edge effect was found to be significantly reduced with the flanged roll design. Based on the pilot-plant results, the implications for circuit design, energy efficiency and overall plant performance in a full-scale application were investigated and discussed.IntroductionGlobal trends such as lower ore grades and rising operating costs are driving the market toward more energy-efficient mineral processing solutions, most notably in comminution circuit design. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) have been recognized as an energy-efficient solution relative to more conventional circuit designs. The basic operating principle of HPGRs, in which a fairly uniform pressure is applied to a bed of material in the compression zone, lends itself to this improved energy efficiency (Morley, 2006). Studies have estimated that savings of 10-15 percent are possible when comparing an HPGR circuit with a traditional SABC circuit (Rosario and Hall, 2008). While HPGRs offer a more energy-efficient solution than tumbling mills, there is still room for improvement in many aspects of the design. Edge effect, in particular, is one such aspect that limits the effectiveness of the machines. Edge effect is the impaired performance at the edge of the rolls due to a reduction in crushing pressure (Morley, 2010; van der Meer, 2010). As described in our prior work (Knorr, Herman and Whalen, 2013), edge effect is caused by the interaction between the ore entering the crusher and the relatively static cheek plates positioned at the edges of the rolls. As the material is drawn into the crushing zone, the sliding friction between the ore and the cheek plates inhibits the ability of material to be effectively drawn into the compression zone at the edges of the rolls. This reduces the crushing force in those edge regions relative to the center of the roll where material is being drawn into the compression zone at a higher rate. In addition, the cheek plates of a traditional HPGR design are held in place by spring-loaded brackets that are adjustable to manage the clearance. This spring-loaded cheek plate design prevents full compression of the material in the edge regions of the roll as there is relief at the outer edges."

"The execution of classical building services in underground mining operations is more truth than myth. From small concrete foundations for conveyor belts to the construction of huge workshops for large machinery maintenance, nearly every operation requires building services. By creating such fixed facilities, these services ensure the efficiency of the production. A distinction must be made between fixed facilities which directly enable the production and auxiliary facilities which only indirectly support the production. The construction costs of such auxiliary facilities are often roughly estimated because they do not immediately contribute to mineral extraction. The research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’ seeks to address the question: ‘Can the construction costs concerning fixed auxiliary facilities be neglected e.g. within a prefeasibility study?’ The presentation will show the monetary relevance and significance of these auxiliary facilities and introduce a guideline for cost estimators. PROBLEM DEFINITION The overriding interest of an underground mining operator is to exploit the commodity with the maximal quality by minimum cost and time expenditure. If a new operation shall be installed, it has to promise profitability. Therefore, predictive economic feasibility studies are performed in advance of installation. Herein, all cost expenditure for installation and operation of the future underground mine is determined and compared to the expected income by selling the raw material. The described interest of the mining operator is the starting point of the research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’. While economic feasibility studies for future operations are focused on the profitable exploitation of raw materials and the efficiency of the accompanying necessary production processes, auxiliary actions are only considered rudimentary. Necessary production processes, as well as auxiliary actions regularly require classical building services, which are normally performed in construction business on the surface in the same manner. By performing building services like masonry or concrete works in underground mines, fixed facilities shall be set up in order to enable or support the raw material production. Production enabling fixed facilities are varying from small concrete foundations for conveyor belts or other infrastructural elements to upstream processing plants situated in the mine workings. While such fixed facilities are essential parts of the production process chain, supporting facilities underground shall increase the efficiency of the mining operation. Workshops, control rooms and social installations are only a few examples for supporting facilities. Those could be situated on the surface as well, but the efficiency increases significantly by installing them underground. Especially supporting facilities are evading from the main interest of the mine operator, since they are only indirectly connected to the production process. Huge banks of preparation plant refuse and other non¬saleable materials have accumulated over the years in all major United States coal producing areas. These banks, esthetically and commercially undesirable, can cause air and water pollution and land reclamation and mineral conservation problems for the industry and nearby communities Although some refuse banks have been reworked to recover saleable coal, all remain and accumulation continues. Even those previously processed continue as potential hazards. Among the several problems created by refuse banks, in situ combustion is most treacherous. Of the millions of tons of major accumulations, there are at least 450 refuse banks on, fire at this time Attempts to extinguish such fires are costly, impractical and generally unfruitful. Studies are in progress to evaluate the potential of processing such materials to eliminate the combustion capability and to yield usable fuel and nonfuel products. Aspects of the study now in. development for coal refuse include: (a) evaluation of characteristics (size, sink-float, ash, sulfur and calorific value) of the coal refuse materials which are known to be highly variable, (b) development of an ignition test having significance for in situ conditions, (c) study of processing capabilities (comminution for liberation, pilot plant washing tests), and (d) investigation of potentially significant properties of fuel and nonfuel products which could be altered to enhance their market potential.. Among the latter products are lightweight aggregate, fill for mine slushing operations, construction, etc: Plans are to extend the studies to include the design, erection, and test processing of refuse with a transportable plant,; which could provide basic economic and product utilization data from several locations

Separation of geochemical anomalies from the background using various methods for identifying areas of higher mineral potential is a critical first step in Greenfield and Brownfield programs. There are several methods for differentiating anomalous regions from the background. The U-spatial statistics is an effective technique that provides the opportunity of reaching this goal by considering the geochemical sample locations in the separation of geochemical anomalies. In this study, a developed form of the U-spatial statistics method is introduced, which not only considers the existence of anisotropic spatial variations in input data but also reduces the computational (CPU) time. While the previous method is based on the isotropic assumption in the study area and a set of search windows at different times, here, the geochemical anomaly is determined by pasting only one ellipsoid window, effectively combining the flexibility of the U-spatial statistics method with the advantages of geostatistical approaches. This paper compares various approaches (the previous and developed version of the U-spatial statistics method, concentrationarea (C–A) fractal model, and probability diagram modeling) for the separation of anomalous areas in the presence of heterogeneous spatial variations. This is done with an application to a Baghqloom porphyry copper deposit located in southeastern Iran. The high potential areas identified via different approaches show an anomalous region in central parts of the Baghqloom area, which partially coincides with an intense potassic alteration area. Compared to other methods, our algorithm separated the high potential areas at a greater spatial resolution.

This paper presents the results of an analysis and summary of relevant literature on the mechanism of cementation of metals in acidic aqueous media, with the aim of reconsidering the conventional assumptions. The simplicity of the process as a mere galvanic metal displacement is discussed, and the real effects of pH and hydrogen pressure in different cases assessed. Finally, an alternative mechanism scheme with respect to the role of hydrogen species, in agreement with reported data, is proposed.

"This paper delves into the constraints on the nature, origin and thermal evolution of the accretions formed in the uptake shaft of the flash smelting furnace operated by Atlantic Copper in Huelva, Spain, outlining recommended practices for preventing accretion buildup. The accretions were investigated using quantitative electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction and digital imaging techniques, and the experimental data on mineral composition, crystal chemistry and textural relationships were interpreted in terms of thermodynamic phase equilibrium in the SiO2-Fe-O-S system. The results suggest that two distinct types of accretions were formed by the fractional crystallization of two coexisting immiscible melts, under changing conditions of oxygen partial pressure (pO2). The type I accretion of magnetite + delafossite ± cuprite ± tridymite ± metallic copper crystallized from a fractionating copper-rich melt at pO2 above about 10-5 atm, while the type II accretion of magnetite + fayalite + metallic copper + chalcocite derived from a melt with lower copper concentration when pO2 levels dropped below that critical level. Phase compositions and textures were consistent with a cooling history of both compositionally contrasting liquids from about 1,250 °C, the liquidus temperature of magnetite, to eutectic or near-eutectic temperatures of around 1,100 °C. The maintenance of appropriate temperatures — above the liquidus temperature of magnetite — and oxygen partial pressure levels may be critical for the prevention of accretion buildup. IntroductionCopper flash smelting with oxygen-enriched air, an autothermal process developed half a century ago by Outotec (Espoo, Finland), formerly Outokumpu, currently accounts for about 50 percent of the world’s primary sulfide-based copper (Schlesinger et al., 2011). The partial reaction of copper sulfide concentrates produces two separate molten streams, copper-iron-sulfide matte and iron oxide-rich slag, and releases sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. The matte is sent to converters to remove the remaining iron and sulfur, leaving blister copper with grade of about 99.5 percent copper (Cu), which is cast into anodes for electrolytic refining.The SO2-rich gas generated by the oxidation of sulfide feed particles contains a significant proportion of dust that is entrained in the process off-gas. The gas from smelting is transferred into a waste heat recovery boiler, where it is cleared of dust and cooled before it is converted into sulfuric acid. If the process is not operated properly, the dust-bearing gas may form accretions between the uptake shaft of the flash smelting furnace and the waste heat recovery boiler, causing severe problems in the gas handling system (Swinbourne, Simak and Yazawa, 2002; Miettinen, 2008; Stefanova et al., 2012). Removing the dust accretions usually requires a greal deal of time, effort and resources. Understanding the buildup of accretion may help in reducing the problems and optimizing the process"

A large number and a wide variety of chemical reagents are used in flotation processes for wettability and Eh control, particle agglomeration/dispersion and bubble stability. A historical account of the use of flotation reagents through the years since flotation was introduced as a viable and economic process for the concentration of sulfide minerals is given and a review of old and modern postulates of their interaction with minerals is presented. Although the results of surface and colloid chemistry studies with well characterized mineral/flotation reagent systems have advanced our understanding of the role played by these chemicals in the flotation process, many questions remain unanswered. Moreover, new flotation reagents are needed to solve the challenge posed by the treatment of problematic-type ores and fuel deposits that have increasingly become the source of our raw and energy materials. Because of the depletion of high-grade and relatively easy-to-process ores, flotation scientists and engineers are confronted with finding more specific and selective flotation chemicals to effectively and economically concentrate minerals. The development of new flotation reagents is vital for cleaning fine coal and processing polysulfide, polymetallic ores, and mixed oxide/sulfide ores.

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

Zinc ferrite is considered an integral phase of zinc residues as their presence can render the processing of zinc and critical metals difficult. It is a refractory phase, formed at high temperature in the presence of zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) during oxidative roasting in zinc processing plants. Because it is refractory to efficient leaching, unreacted zinc ferrite gets concentrated in the final zinc residue, making it a viable source of zinc and indium extraction. The refractory nature of zinc ferrite makes the extraction of associated critical metals difficult. In order to explore a potential economic and carbon-neutral zinc ferrite processing technique, our previous study proposed the partial reduction of zinc ferrite followed by sulfuric acid leaching of the roasting product [1-3]. As demonstrated in our previous studies, partial reduction of zinc ferrite results in a mixture of ZnO, Fe3O4 and FeO, which can be further subjected to leaching for efficient extraction of zinc and critical metals such as gallium and indium.

Mechanisms involved in the depression of the sulfides: pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite with potassium permanganate have been investigated. Flotation tests were conducted using potassium amyl xanthate, Z-6, and pine oil in the absence and presence of potassium permanganate at around pH = 6. 5 naturally yielded by the sulfides in the pulp. On the basis of crystal chemistry considerations, the amount of xanthate adsorbed by the sulfides depends on the amount of sulfur and metal ions present on the surface; thus, the avidity of the sulfides for xanthate should increase in the order: sphalerite C chalcopyrite 4 galena 4 pyrite, and the ease of depression response to the permanganate action should be in the same order. Depression of the sulfides in the system occurs primarily due to the removal of the collector ions by the permanganate ions to form manganese dioxide and dixanthogen according to the reaction: 3 M(RX)2 + 2 Mn04 + 4 H20 2 ? MnO2 + 3(RX-XR) + 3 M+2 8OH where M represents the metal ion, RX the xanthate ion and (RX-XR) the dixanthogen molecule. Results seem to indicate that the permanganate ions play a triple role in the system: (1) they convert xanthate ions into dixanthogen, (2) they further oxidize the mineral surface and (3) if present in excess, they may oxidize the xanthate beyond the dixanthogen stage with the formation of CO2, H20 and SO4. All sulfides, except for chalcopyrite, showed a depression response in the order predicted regardless of the order of addition of xanthate and permanganate reagents. Chalcopyrite did not depress as easily; this behavior may be due to the avidity of the colloidal MnO2 to adsorb Cu+2 ions on its surface, this would destabilize the colloid making it coalesce with the formation of a layer of precipitated MnO2 on the surface of the mineral. The presence of this layer would prevent further action of the permanganate ions on chalcopyrite.

The Flambeau volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit located in northwestern Wisconsin occurs within the southern lobe of the Canadian Precambrian Shield. The steeply dipping tabular body occurs in a complex pile of cyclic schistose intermediate to felsic fragmental volcanics. No chloritic alteration pipe is recognized but adjacent rocks have undergone magnesia metasomatism and subsequently were metamorphosed to the upper greenschist and lower amphibolite facies. Although modest in size the deposit is of special interest in that it has an extensive and well preserved supergene enrichment blanket. Economic minerals found within a pyritized quartz-sericite schist are chalcocite and bornite overlying primary chalcopyrite.

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II)-activated sphalerite exhibits a high flotability so that satisfied separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by IR; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitute and polymerization of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the Separation Efficiency: ES = (R ? Rg) where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and Rg the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The Separation Efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

European Union's transition to a low-carbon and digital economy highly depends on securing the strategic autonomy of the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) supply chain. This paper introduces a European Commission-funded research and innovation action, AGEMERA, which aims to create detailed geological and people's concerns maps to unlock the CRMs potential in Europe. Furthermore, the project will develop educational packages for schools and universities, publish online CRM-related games and news flashes, and arrange public events to ensure a basis for socially accepted and sustainable exploration and mining of CRMs in Europe. 1. IntroductionCritical Raw Materials (CRMs), crucial for shifting to a low-carbon and digital economy, should focus on maintaining Europe's overall supply-demand balance (Birol, 2022). Therefore, to proactively address the surge in demand and ensure the strategic autonomy of European industrial supply chains, the exploration and extraction of CRMs must be scaled out across the continent. Moreover, mobilizing Europe's domestic potential is vital for the EU to become more resilient and to establish open strategic autonomy as the demand for CRMs continues to increase quickly on a global scale (European Commission, 2021). Base metal extraction and mining have a long history in Europe. Nevertheless, CRMs mining projects have shown less success, although these have a lot of potential (Guzik et al., 2021). The main barriers are a lack of investment in mining and exploration, complicated and drawn-out national permitting processes, and low levels of public support (European Commission, 2020). It is necessary to have a vast amount of knowledge and intelligence about CRM's potential and market impact. Novel non-invasive geophysical survey techniques that enable sustainable exploration must be created and used to enhance mineral system models of ore deposits incorporating CRMs. The minerals policy framework significantly influences the mining industry's performance, stability, and sustainability. However, the EU Member States' mineral policy frameworks differ significantly (MINLEX, 2017). In addition, the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies offers concrete information on how managers and executives of mining companies view key policy areas that impact mining activities in the jurisdiction in which they operate or are familiar (Jackson & Green, 2015).

The Alimak Raise Method, using the Alimak Climber, has proven to be a new, fast, economical method of driving raises at the Iron King Branch of Shat-tuck Denn Mining Corporation, Humboldt, Arizona. In order to fully understand the advantages of the Alimak Raise Climber, it is necessary first to describe the basic machine; second, a complete cycle of a raise round; and third, the comparative speed and economy afforded the Iron King operation by using this new method of raise driving: The raise climber consists of a drilling platform that is raised and lowered by two 6.2 HP compressed air motors that drive, through roller chains and sprockets, three worm gears connected in series. These worm gears drive pinions which grip the guide rail rack. The worm gems are fitted with spring-loaded couplings so that a small rock or grit in the rack is passed over without disturbing the mesh between the rack and the other pinions.
