Ore grinding mills are really just slowly rotating barrels, but barrels that are growing in size so fast that the application of electric drives for them is rapidly approaching a technology like that for wind tunnels or pumped storage drives. This application is particularly worthy of care because some 40% of the 75 megawatts of power used by a large copper ore concentrator, or some 60% of the 200 megawatts supplied to a large iron ore concentrator, are for grinding. These ore plants are located where the ore is, not where a utility happens to be. So, the challenge is not only to choose a drive and .power transmission for reasonable cost, high performance, reliability and minimum maintenance, but to afford the interface between mill drive and power distribution and source systems to minimize the whole ore plant's monthly power bill, or costs of self generation. Conclusions can be reached in optimizing a drive selection only for each particular ore plant's set of parameters, but by identifying the criteria for selection and then weighting each type of drive per criteria, yardsticks for final choice become apparent. This is the purpose of this paper. Grinding action takes place inside the barrel, where the ore charge is ground with the aid of balls, or mill length rods, or large chunks of ore as in autogenous grinding.

Events of the mid-1970's have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in "deregulation" activity. Those two events have produced considerable Litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

"Two important aspects of excavation performance of TBM are advance rate and cutter replacement/ring consumption, which is closed to the cost and construction duration of the project. To achieve this, a database of TBM parameters and the geological-geotechnical conditions during the excavation of Yinhanjiwei was compiled and analyzed. Relationships between different geological and TBM operational parameters were investigated. Results of analyzes show that there are qualitative correlation between Field Penetration Index (FPI) and rock geological parameters. And strong relationships between FPI and operational parameters are suggested. In this study, the cutter replacement and ring consumption were analyzed using statistical method for preliminary estimation in similar conditions. 1. ITRODUCTION Hard rock TBM is widely used in tunneling project nowadays because of its advantages to conventional drilling and blasting, especially in long tunnels. The biggest advantage is its high advance rate. However, rock conditions of tunnels are complicated. So TBM performance becomes a primary topic in tunneling engineering, which includes of rate of penetration, utilization, daily advancement, cutter consumption and so on. Many prediction models have been developed to estimate the TBM performance in the project planning phase. The most widely accepted and used models around the world are semi theoretical CSM model (Rostami and Ozdemir, 1993; Rostami, 1997) and the empirical NTNU model (Blindheim, 1979, Bruland, 1998).With increasing uses of TBMs in different ground conditions, an increasing number of researchers have developed new models in order to predict the performance of TBM more accurately in similar geological conditions.(Gong and Zhao, 2009; Hassanpour et al.,2009, 2010, 2011, 2014; Delisio et al., 2013; Delisio and Zhao, 2014)"

It has been suggested that we at the University of Arizona present a paper covering the origin, philosophy, and results of the College of Mines program in the field of computers and operations research. I have worked with the program since its beginning, and I will try to outline the developments as they have taken place. The formal development of the educational and research program in the field of Operations Research and Computer Applications at the College of Mines, University of Arizona, began in early 1957. During the year, the University offered its first formal instruction in computer programming. This was my first introduction to computers, and it did not take long to realize that this new tool had a potential that could be profitably utilized by the mining industry. In March 6f 1957, the University Computing Center began operations with its IBM 650 computer. This machine was the only computer of this size in the local area at this time, The first programming effort was in machine language and the programming cost could only be justified for repetitive-type of problems. The progress in the computer field moved very rapidly and with the development of the many compiler and assembly programs and the addition of sub routines to the computer library, the scope of problems that could profitably be investigated by computers expanded rapidly.

American Girl Mine is located in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains in the southeastern Imperial Valley of Southern California. Production from the current open pit mine and heap leach recovery system began in early 1989. Previous mining and gold recovery took place commencing in 1987 at the Padre Madre site, situated adjacent to the American Girl site to the southwest. In mid-1990, a 790-tonne-per-day underground gold mine and mill went into production. Approximately 6,500 troy ounces of gold per month are recovered from the combined open pit underground mine operation. Copper in the form of Azurite [Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2] and Malachite [Cu2CO3(OH)2] are abundant in the mined ores (Henshaw, 1942). The high solubility of these minerals in caustic cyanide solutions has a negative impact on carbon adsorption and electrowin processes. This paper presents the results of monitoring programs, process chemistry, and control changes introduced at American Girl Mine to abate production complications in the refinery and measures taken to minimize solution gold losses in the adsorption circuit(s).

Recent tailings dam failures around the globe have influenced many mining industry regulators to reassess their requirements for the numerical modelling of tailings dam failures. This type or forward modelling is associated with overarching uncertainties as the model cannot be calibrated against a physical result. Dam breach analyses that meet the requirements of current industry standards and guidance typically begin with identification of credible failure modes and selection of appropriate topographic data set to represent the study area. The breach parameters and the volume of tailings released are then determined using available methodologies and empirical relationships. Subsequently, when the breach hydrograph is developed and the hydrology of stream networks are complete, the runout simulation is implemented. Due to the uncertainty involved in the process, sensitivity analyses are recommended to quantify variations in model inputs on the inundation extent and the flow characteristics. This paper outlines some common methodologies utilized for development of dam breach models, summarizes associated uncertainties with these methodologies and inputs, and provides guidance on how sensitivity analyses can address a wide array of uncertainties inherent in tailings breach analyses. This paper provides an understanding of how selecting appropriate breach parameters can result in reasonably conservative inundation extents consistent with the identified credible failure modes.

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

The practice of Countertrade and all of its variations has increased dramatically during the last five years in great part due to the worsening world economic situation and the Third World's increasing debt problems. Conventional wisdom has held that the goods finding their way into countertrade will tend to be manufactured goods of ever increasing value added. It is my contention that this has not been the case. The continued depression of most metals and minerals prices has conspired to keep a great number of metals and raw materials in the forefront of countertrade negotiations. The concept that if a country needs hard currency it will simply sell metals into world markets for cash has been significantly modified by countertrade which encourages subsidies for raw materials which are in turn funded by higher prices for the manufactured goods which the country must import. Countertrade is a term that is relatively new to most of us who have been involved in the international trade of metals and minerals, but it is one that we will continue to hear more of in the future. Countertrade as it is generally known today had its beginnings after the Second World War in Eastern Europe. As the shattered economies of Europe struggled to right themselves, a "cashless" system of trade developed. This system included such ancient concepts as barter as well as more modern ones like bilateral clearing agreements. For over 30 years countertrade was confined mainly to the COMECON nations and their various trade protocols with Third World nations. If metals and minerals were involved, there was little disruption of world markets by such examples as Cuba shipping ferronickel and sugar cane to the U.S.S.R. for a host of manufactured goods and oil. As the world's economy began to slow in the late 70's and the debt crisis began in earnest in the early 801s, this all began to change. As more and more nations which had previously been almost totally dependent upon their mineral wealth over-extended themselves in an attempt to industralize, they concurrently found their income from minerals falling, due to the decreased demand and subsequently lower prices available in the marketplace. At first these nations attempted to balance their payments by promoting the sales of their high value-added manufactured goods. We have all heard numerous examples of U.S. companies going to sell their high technology products in Rumania or Yugoslavia and being confronted with counterpurchase requirements for machine tools, shoes or drill bits. When faced with these demands, a number of companies chose not to sell into those markets while others merrily signed up the obligations without much intent to carry them out. The Performance Bonds required were generally minimal, especially when considered in light of the high margin inherent in high tech items; and the penalty clauses were equally small or nonexistent. A third group of companies actually tried to buy the machine tools or drill bits either for their own internal use or resale but found that due to poor quality and high prices, they were faced with a difficult if not impossible task. This is not to say that no one was able to fulfill a countertrade requirement, but the success ratio on these transactions was incredibly low. This was one of the major contributing factors to the reputation that countertrade has gained as a discipline ... "that it is mostly talk and very little action." Drainage and erosion control often become problems at mine reclamation projects. An example of this was an abandoned surface uranium mine on the south Texas plains. Engineers with the Texas Railroad Commission solved these and other problems with a three-dimensional geomatrix erosion-control matting at the 69-hm2 (170-acre) site, about 70 km (45 miles) southeast of San Antonio. Enkamat, manufactured by Akzo Nobel Geosynthetics, was installed to reinforce the grass waterways that handle runoff from the reclaimed mine. Reclamation was completed in the spring of 1992. Bill Walker is regional manager for Erosion Control Systems. He worked with the contractor to identify an erosion control product that complied with the project's design and installation parameters. "Use of erosion control matting enabled us to reduce erosion control costs," said Mark Rhodes, with the Texas Railroad Commission. "Also, the erosion control material was more aesthetically compatible with the reclaimed landscape." The commission's design called for a terrace ditch to be constructed midway up the reclaimed spoil slope to catch and collect water. Commission engineers selected spoil slopes, ranging from 5% to 8%, to build reinforced grassed waterways to drain the collected water from the terrace ditches. This was done instead of dropping the water at steeper slope location in rip rap- or concrete-lined channels. Enkamat's three-dimensional geomatrix of heavy nylon monofilaments is 95% open space that aids root growth. Its root-reinforcement system resists the hydraulic lift-and-shear forces created by high-volume discharges of water. In addition, fine eddy turbulences are prevented from isolating and uprooting individual roots and clumps of vegetation. Enkamat is flexible and lightweight. This makes it easy to install. And, because grass grows into it over time, it "disappears" after installation. Between 12,540 and 14,200 m2 (15,000 and 17,000 sq yds) were installed in the waterway using 150-mm (6-in.) staples to fasten the matting, said contractor Dale Blackstock. "It was easy to use; no problem at all to put down." Blackstock selected Enkamat from a list of eight different channel lining materials described as acceptable in the commission's design specifications. The design specifications were based on the results of channel-lining performance tests conducted by the Texas Department of Transportation. Rhodes said that the commission's Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation program had installed Enkamat on other abandoned uranium mines and on an abandoned surface lignite mine near Austin. "Pretty much all of our installations of Enkamat have worked out well," he said. "There have been no failures. The reinforced grass waterways have performed as designed."

Detailed description of the development of the FIOR process1 and, subsequently, other technical papers relating to the operation and start up of the FIOR plant2,3 are available in the technical literature. The Fluidized Iron Ore Reduction (FIOR) process plant constructed in the Matanzas region of Venezuela represents the first commercial application of this technology. The FIOR process was developed by Exxon Company during the 1950's and 1960's; and the facility in Venezuela was designed and constructed by Davy McKee with the plant start up in 1976. While there is a minority government ownership in the company, FIOR de Venezuela operates as a private sector company with the majority of the ownership being private capital.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

Mineral policy in Canada has been in a state of transition and change over the past several years. 1976 has witnessed some settling of troubled waters and the pattern of the currents of change is becoming more clear. The provinces play a key role in this process and have provided much of the thrust for new initiatives. On the other hand, the federal government in Canada in recent years has taken a much more active interest in mineral affairs than previously and has asserted its powers on a number of key policy questions. Some of the initiatives from the two levels of government in Canada have come into conflict with each other and, thus, contributed materially to a state of affairs that includes change, uncertainty and conflict.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

"As a new method to support gate roadways, rock bolting has been widely used in the big coal enterprises for its superiority. The disturbed stress field of surrounding rock and anchor pre-stress field were divided into 3 areas in consideration of s1, s3. The surrounding rock failure form and characteristic were analyzed in combination with parameter f, the failure mechanism was explained using the slip line theory, furthermore, the rock bolting mechanism and its arrangement were studied. After roadway excavation, the tensile stress area appeared at the surface of the surrounding rock. The failure type changes from shallow tension-shear form into deep compression-shear form and the failure shape is an “incense burner”, surrounding by high risk failure area in butterfly shape. The maximum principle stress in roof appears discontinuous distribution because of layers separation. The failure type of surrounding rock is intensity-stress environment-weak plane control model. The internal reason of roadway macroscopic failure is the displacement between the surface plastic area and the deep elastic region along the tangential direction of slip line. In condition of rock bolt support, there is one-way tensile stress area in small range at the surface of surrounding rock, inside is the bidirectional compressive zone in uniform distribution form, stress environment is improved by the superposition of anchor pre-stress and disturbed stress field, anchor rock bolt arrangement and pre-tightening force distribution is decided according to the distribution of f parameter. Finally, supporting method and parameter reasonability was proved by the roadway deformation monitoring, damage depth drilling peep test in the 8101 transportation roadway in a mine.Introduction The stability of roadway support is very important to the safety and sustainable development of coal mine. In recent years, the focus of China's coal mining industry began to move to West China, the thick-extra thick coal seam is developed in the West. The latest technology and equipment have been put in to service, the occurrence condition of thick coal seam and the increasing of productivity lead to the cross section of the roadway increasing continually, hence, it is more difficult to control the surrounding rock. At present, the most common way to support the roadway is rock bolt (cable) support (Wang 2007); Scholars have been deeply studied on the mechanism of rock bolt. It is reported (Wang et al 2012, Gao 2007, Zhang and Yuan 2006) that the influence of rock bolt on physical and mechanical parameters of coal and rock mass in the anchorage zone, It is believed that the rock bolt can improve the peak strength of surrounding rock, especially the post peak strength, and the failure mode of rock mass under the rock bolt support is analyzed. It is reported (Wang et al 2014, Xiao et al 2013, Li et al 2007, Yan et al 2012), according to different geological conditions, the failure mechanism of surrounding rock and supporting technology of the whole coal roadway were studied. Focus on the failure mechanism of roadway surrounding rock, different forms of high strength support methods were proposed, which achieved good results. It is reported (Wang et al 2012a, Zhang et al 2011, Wang et al 2012b, Kang et al 2010, Zhang et al 2010, Kang et al 2007) that the supporting mechanism of pre-stressed anchor was analyzed from the point of the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the pre-stressed anchor field, and the influence of the rock bolt support parameters and surrounding rock characteristics on the supporting effects were studied. Based on the latest research results, this paper analyzed the failure mechanism of surrounding rock of coal roadway, proposed the high strength anchor net cable combined supporting technology based on the feature of stress zoning distribution of surrounding rock, to provide reference for the coal roadway rock bolt (cable) support technology."

"One of the most pervasive diseases in the mining industry is noise-induced hearing loss. The exposure of miners to noise levels above the permissible exposure level results in hearing loss in approximately 80% of coal miners by retirement age. In this context, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to develop noise controls for longwall mining systems, which are used to extract half of the national underground coal production.From field measurements, previous research determined that the dominant sound-radiating components at the shearer of a longwall system are the two cutting drums used to remove coal. Due to the dimensions and complexity of longwall mining systems, the NIOSH project developed a validated finite element model of the cutting drum to use in predicting the sound radiated by the drum due to the excitation forces experienced in underground operations. This same model will be used to develop engineering noise controls for the drum. The excitation forces arise from the interaction of the cutting bits and the coal and are transmitted to the cutting drum through the bit holders. Due to the adverse conditions at the face, and a lack of instrumentation approved for underground use, the operational coal cutting forces have not been assessed before. To this end, NIOSH, in collaboration with Michigan Technological University, developed a self-contained, intrinsically safe instrumented bit to measure these forces.This paper describes the development of the instrumented bit and the measuring of operational coal cutting forces at three working coal mines. The measurements revealed that the forces have a flat spectrum, representative of the impact nature of these forces, up to around 100 Hz. Above this cutoff frequency, the force magnitude decreases at a rate proportional to the inverse of frequency squared."

Flotation of fine and coarse coal after multistage addition of the frother was found to yield coal fractions with significantly lower ash content as compared to the feed. It was observed that the lowest ash content, specific gravity and reactivity of coal was associated with finer size fractions. Ignition and combustion characteristics of different coal fractions were evaluated using a differential thermal analyzer (DTA) with calorimeter attachment. It is suggested that in the ignition stage, the removal of mineral matter affects the reactivity through the physical changes brought about by the ash removal. In the char combustion stage the mineral matter seems to influence the reactivity through the catalytic activity of surface concentrations of metal ions, ratio of combustible/incombustible material, internal pore structure and roughness.
