The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The performance was also compared in terms of mill orientation. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1*10−3 to 5*10−3 Nm at 750 and 1500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value. Additionally, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to compare mill orientation (vertical vs. horizontal) for the same mill and under the same test conditions.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Seismic events can be induced by mining due to unstable rock failures or slips along geologic structures leading to the sudden release of strain energy stored within the rock near underground openings. Depending on their intensity and proximity to the working area, seismic events may raise safety concerns, and thus the forecasting of the seismic potential in advance of mining can mitigate safety hazards. The integration of seismic data into geomechanical modeling can provide a tool for identifying areas with elevated potential for seismic activity. In previous works, a methodology was developed to forecast seismic potentials in a pseudo-2D geomechanical model. In this paper, seismic events, ranging in magnitude from about -1.0 ML to 3.7 ML, recorded in a deep longwall mine (> 450 m) in Virginia during mining of six adjacent panels, were evaluated to identify areas where larger magnitude events (> 1 ML) had occurred. A three-dimensional geomechanical model of the same area was constructed in the 3DEC software to calculate the state of energy in the system with the progress of mining along the entire length of each panel. The variation in the energy content of the model was monitored, and zones with potentially damaging slip-type events along bedding planes followed by compressive-type events in the sandstone roof are the mechanism for large seismic events in the studied mine. The locations of anomalous events corresponded to the regions where both compression-type SPI (C-SPI) and slip-type SPI (S-SPI) were elevated. The modeling results were compared with the recorded seismic events to evaluate the model performance in forecasting the seismic potentials. The model was able to forecast 100% of regions with elevated and moderate seismic potential and 89% of regions with low seismic potential. This shows the applicability of energy balance calculations for forecasting the approximate location and timing of destructive seismic events in advance of mining.

The adsorption of dialkyl di-and mono-thio-phosphinates on gold, silver and gold-silver alloys has been studied in the present work. These reagents, which are selective collectors for sulfide flotation, have been found to improve precious metals recovery from ores. Voltammetric studies have indicated that dithiophosphinate adsorbs on gold at much higher potentials than on silver, while monothiophosphinate adsorbs only on silver. However, both adsorb on gold-silver alloys with the adsorption potential decreasing with increasing silver content. Using FTIR spectroscopic measurements, the surface species formed during the interactions of these collectors have been identified. The results of the electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements have been compared with the contact angle data obtained at controlled potential conditions.

In 1978, the U.S. Department of Energy funded a 2-year study to identify and quantify causes of the post-1969 coal mine productivity decline. A large number of factors hypothesized to have affected productivity during this period were analyzed using regression techniques. The results were particularly interesting for two of the factors--mining method and shift scheduling. The study results indicate that the use of longwall mining has an insignificant impact on overall mine productivity, compared to other methods, and mines operating on a two-production shift per day schedule are more productive than mines employing other shift schedules.

Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones. Using the work of Hudy (1968), and Deurbrouck and Hudy (1972), selection functions for individual unit operations in each plant are calculated as a function f particle size as well as density.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. Coal mine refuse handling traditionally has been the redheaded stepchild of the industry - a problem to be ignored as much as possible. During the past few years, however, mining companies have become more aware of the potential water pollution problem associated with refuse handling and storage. Planning for refuse disposal increasingly emphasizes protection of the environment as well as economics of refuse handling. Coal companies are responding to the environmental control needs by devising new systems and adapting well-known techniques to refuse handling systems. Monterey Coal Company has operated a non-polluting refuse disposal system at its No. 1 Mine for over two years. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design considerations given to the planning of that system and the operational experience gained during its construction

Recently, neutron-induced gamma spectrometry has been introduced and gained provisional acceptance as a method for continuous automated analysis of coal. Instrumentation based on this technique has been under development for and in testing at coal preparation plants and a coal gasifier. To provide a deeper understanding of, and extended capability in applying this method, theoretical calculations have been performed of the absorption of thermal neutrons by various coal compositions, and the thermal neutron capture prompt gamma emission spectra produced by these compositions have been calculated. Selected results of these computer calculations and the computer generated spectra are presented.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

Endako Mine is an open pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, approximately 160 km. west of Prince George. Production for the latter part of 1992 is expected to average at 63,500 tonnes per day of which 27,000 tpd constitute the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 15 to 19 cu. yd. electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 121;.1 inch electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas called the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the South East stage of the Endako Pit while the stripping is carried out in the South Wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM/BM/flotation circuits. The majority of the Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade Molybdenum Oxide (MoO3) while a portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure Molybdenum Sulphide (MoS2) "Ultrapure" product.

INTRODUCTION In each given set of operational criteria for tunnel design, ground conditions dictate the selection of the most appropriate construction method and tunnel lining. The designer has the responsibility to choose or restrict the choice of the tunnel lining to insure that the final solution provides a cost-effective permanent construction which will require the minimum of maintenance and endure to the benefit of future generations. This Paper deals with some of the aspects of precast concrete tunnel linings, their history and development through the years. It does not purport to be a comprehensive review of all that has ever been tried or developed but, hopefully, a starting point to encourage discussion and development for the future. BOLTED LINERS As a result of anticipating a shortage of cast iron tunnel lining in 1936 when work was proceeding on London Transport's Central Line Metro, a design for the precast reinforced concrete bolted lining was born. The design took the form of the traditional cast-iron lining but with substantial concrete stiffeners to take the shield ram forces. This new lining was used to construct some 14,000 feet of running tunnel using a ring width of 1'8" which was the standard cast-iron width of the time. (Groves, G.L., 1943)

Throughout all segments of the United States mining industry, 163 independent contractor employees were fatally injured between 1990 and 1997. Factors that contributed to these injuries were identified after reviewing descriptive information contained in Mine Safety and Health Administration fatality reports for each of the incidents. Thirty-three unique contributing factors were identified and multiple factors were noted for each fatality. Those most frequently discerned were "failure to follow `standard operating procedures"', (35% of the fatalities), "poor positioning of employee" (26% of the fatalities) and "failure to maintain equipment" (23% of the fatalities). Contributing factors were then associated with the accident and job classifications of the victims. Factors having the highest frequencies in the top five accident classifications where most fatalities occurred were as follows: powered haulage - "failure to maintain equipment"; machinery - "poor positioning of employee"; slip/fall of person - "inadequate fall protection" and "failure to wear safety line"; electrical - "equipment contact with power line"; and falling/rolling/sliding rock - "poor positioning of employee. " Among the job classifications in which most fatalities occurred, leading contributing factors were as follows: truck driver - "failure to follow standard operating procedures" and "poor positioning of employee"; laborer/utility man/pumper - "poor positioning of employee"; mechanic/ repairman and welder - "failure to follow standard operating procedures." Recommendations for utilizing contributing factor information as a basis for safety training are proposed. Training programs may be developed that inform independent contractor employees of factors which, in the past, have contributed to fatal injuries in their job classifications. Then, by combining this information with contributing factors identified in "related" accident classifications, a truly focused training intervention that addresses very specific workplace hazards may he developed.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited's Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project's financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.

Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

To enable the analysis of stability for a mine feasibility study a variety of geotechnical engineering parameters need to be obtained. At the early stage of a project it is usual for those responsible for the study to require a wide spatial distribution of RC holes in order to define a resource at the lowest possible cost. By the time a geotechnical study has commenced drilling priorities have usually switched to improving the definition of a resource, by drilling with diamond coring methods in the central area of the main orebody. The usual timing for geotechnical data collection is therefore after a wide distribution of holes have been drilled but which contain little geotechnical information. Conventional methods employed usually involve estimation methods, including book values and examination of disturbed core, or expensive additional drilling. With downhole geophysical methods we can economically take advantage of existing holes to obtain continuous values for density, defect orientation and ranking, elastic modulus values, unconfined compressive strength estimates and fracture frequency. This paper presents the results of a geophysical study and discusses the advantages and potential pitfalls of the method as compared to conventional methods of data collection.

Two of the open-pit, copper-molybdenum mining operations of Duval Corporation are located in the foothills of the Sierrita Mountains approximately 30 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. In March 1959, mining from a moderate sized porphyry deposit known as the "Esperanza orebody" was begun at a rate of 10,000 tons of ore per day. Some five years later, a sizeable group of mineral claims west of Esperanza became available to Duval. Earlier exploration and development drilling in this area by others indicated an orebody of greater size but lower tenor than that of Esperanza. A drilling program conducted by Duval not only verified the results of the prior drilling but in addition, revealed a continuation of the mineralization to the south and east. Thus was developed the Sierrita orebody. Open pit design delineated 414 million tons of ore containing an average copper content of 0.35 percent and a molybdenum content of 0.036 percent. In April 1966, the office of Emergency Planning authorized General Services Administration to undertake a program under the Defense Production Act to en¬courage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national defense. Duval's Sierrita Project was brought to GSA's attention in May 1966 on November 28, 1967, an agreement providing for the development of the Sierrita Property was consummated with GSA. In March 1970, the first copper-molybdenum concentrates were produced in the 72,000 tons-per-day concentrator. Pre-production stripping exceeded the scheduled 105 million tons despite the comparatively short lead time available to equip the mine, build the mine plant facilities, and staff the technical, supervisory, and labor forces. Shortly before the first concentrates were produced, plans were being formulated for a program to increase processing capacity by approximately 15 percent, which entailed increasing overall mining capacity by approximately 50,000 tons per day. This program is scheduled for completion early in 1971.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.

Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.
