The Bulldog CIP plant treats the slime portion of current tailings and reclaimed flotation tailings from the adjoining 350 tpd (3.67 kg/s) silver-lead flotation mill. Changes to the dredge reclaimer, pulp storage tank and trash removal system have allowed an increase in tonnage treated to a sustained 460tpd (4.83kg/s). CIP feed is 3-4 oz/T Ag (102.9-137.1 ppm). Following conventional cyanidation, carbon is added to the slurry. Silver loaded carbon is stripped in atmospheric-pressure vessels using hot caustic cyanide. Silver recovery from this solution is by Zadra- type cells. Some of the modifications to the plant and operating techniques are discussed.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.

"An underground environment with high air temperature and humidity conditions generated from various heat and moisture sources can significantly affect the thermoregulation processes of the human body. This can lead to a series of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. The majority of the metabolic energy of a mine worker results in the production of heat. If the human body is to maintain thermal equilibrium, then this metabolic heat must be transferred to the ambient surroundings at the same rate. The heat loss from the human body occurs through a combination of heat transfer processes, such as respiratory heat exchange, convection, radiation and evaporation. If the heat loss from the human body to the ambient surroundings is less than the metabolic heat produced, the excess will be accumulated within the human body, which will result in a rise in the core and skin temperatures. This can ultimately lead to a heat-related illness or a combination of heat-related illnesses. This paper aims to discuss major heat-related issues and provide an overview of various mine ventilation and cooling systems, which can be employed to overcome high levels of heat and humidity in underground mines. In this paper, the effects of heat exposure on the health, safety and productivity of the mine workers are also highlighted. IntroductionMining in the United States remains one of the most hazardous industries, despite significant reductions in fatal injuries over the last century (Coleman and Kerkering, 2007; Saleh and Cummings 2011; Jacklitsch, Musolin and Kim, 2016). Occupational health hazards within the mining industry include hazards that are physical, such as traumatic injury or hearing loss; chemical, such as silica or diesel particulate matter; biological; ergonomic; and psychological (Donoghue, 2004; Saleh and Cummings, 2011). The effects of some of these hazards can be diagnosed immediately, while many, like black-lung and silicosis, will have long-term effects on the health, safety and life quality of mine workers (Donoghue, 2004; National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, NIOSH, 2000). Among these hazards, exposure to heat and humidity can significantly affect the safety, health and productivity of mine workers, particularly in deep and hot underground mines (Roghanchi, Sunkpal and Kocsis, 2015). Short-term acute heat exposures can cause a rise in the core temperature of the human body, which can result in a heat-related illness or combination of heat-related illnesses. Adverse long-term chronic heat exposure can generate serious occupational heat-related illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, mental health problems and chronic kidney diseases. High core body temperatures coupled with dehydration can generate negative behavioral effects such as physical fatigue, irritability, lethargy, impaired judgment, loss of dexterity and loss of concentration (Xiang et al., 2014)"

The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process was developed during the 1960s by the Midland-Ross Corporation, which had pioneered shaft furnace technology and stoichiometric gas reforming for use in processing minerals. In 1969, the first MIDREX® Direct Reduction Plant was built in Portland, OR. Since then, 49 additional modules have been sold in 18 countries. For the last ten years, over 60 percent of the world's direct reduced iron has been produced in MIDREX Plants. During the quarter century since commercialization, many technical improvements have been made, including larger shaft furnaces, in-situ reforming, greater heat recovery, improved catalysts, and hot briquetting. Midrex continues to enhance the technology in the areas of economy-of-scale, energy efficiency, alternate fuels, and raw material flexibility.

The dissolution of metals from various metal-mine tailings has been studied through a series of submerged tailings batch tests at U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratories. Tailings selected for this study included both reactive (as determined by column leaching studies) and benign tailings. Metal mobilization in aerated (97 pct saturated with oxygen) samples appeared to be consistently greater than metal dissolution from stagnant (79 pct or 70 pct saturated with oxygen) waters. In the early weeks of the study, sulfate concentrations increased with solid-liquid contact time, while calcium dissolution remained nearly constant. Metal concentrations varied in relation to solid-liquid contact time and aeration. Leachate pH appeared to be nearly independent of solid-liquid contact time for basic tailings. Reactive tailings having both a submerged and a surface component demonstrated increased metal mobility.

As one begins to contemplate the organization of a talk with the title "Iron Ore - The Permanent State of Evolution," the main divisions appear to be the past, the present, and the future. But distaste for repetition of the present production achievements, which scarcely need additional description on this occasion, soon leads one to the conclusion that a more appropriate division of the subject is simply the past and the future . . . with emphasis on the future. We are working in the present, but it can only be understood by what has taken place in the years and decades gone by, and/or under what terms we will have to face the future. Evolution is more often thought of as a steady change - but steady change is really the product of revolutions, sometimes making headlines but often unnoticed at the time. With hindsight, we recognize the great importance of the emergence of the Bessemer converter and the open hearth and the vast influence that both have had on steel making and the changing ore demand. In this country we also see schooners opening the era for lake transportation of iron ore from Michigan to Take Erie. Later, steamships haul the ore from the Mesabi Range to the steel centers of the country. In order to take full advantage of the inland seaway, there had to be revolutions in ship design, loading and unloading facilities and channel and lock development. Full scale utilization of the resources of the Mesabi Range, itself, required parallel upheavals such as the development of new production equipment, and substitution of modern forms of energy for horsepower, and, yes, manpower, as well.

INTRODUCTION Kerckhoff-2 is a 140 MW underground hydro-electric project designed and owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and constructed between May, 1980 and May, 1983 by Auburn Constructors. The project is located in the western foothills of the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 30 miles northeast of Fresno, California, and develops the power potential of the lower San Joaquin River and its tributaries between the existing Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes. The Kerckhoff-2 Project consists of project roads, adits, and access tunnels, service tunnels, power tunnels, powerhouse, tailrace tunnel surge shaft, buss shaft, intake structure, discharge structure, and switchyard. In the 1920s, the Kerckhoff 1 project, consisting of a dam, reservior, tunnel, and 34 MW powerhouse, was built in the same general area as Kerckhoff-2. The tunnel was constructed by conventional methods, and was left unlined. In time, other projects were built upstream, allowing the flow of the San Joaquin River to be regulated. The Kerckhoff 2 project is designed to harness that regulated flow, providing an additional 140,000 ON of power. Kerckhoff 2 will be the primary power plant; Kerckhoff I will produce power whenever the flow rate exceeds 4,800 cubic feet. The new power tunnel is built along the east side of the San Joaquin River between Kerckhoff and Millerton Lakes, parallel to the existing tunnel but extending approximately one mile further downstream.

The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene and plagioclase feldspar which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals and reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilize the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. In summary due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible. Chromite recoveries can be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. "The use of recycled water in flotation has significant effects on flotation and selectivity because the recycled water contains many dissolved compounds and ions that alter the chemistry of the system. In this study, the effects of calcium, magnesium and sulfate, which are abundant components in recycled water, were investigated on galena, sphalerite and pyrite flotation using pure minerals and a complex sulfide ore by conducting bench-scale flotation, microflotation and zeta potential measurements. The bench-scale flotation tests indicated that higher recoveries of galena and sphalerite are obtained when water is recycled, due to higher concentrations of ions in recycled water. However, there was a critical ion concentration for galena recovery. The microflotation tests showed that galena recoveries at different pHs in recycled water are lower than in tap and distilled water. Pure sphalerite recoveries improved in recycled water in the bench-scale test with ore. Pure pyrite was depressed with recycled water as well. Zeta potentials became less negative with increased calcium and magnesium ion concentrations due to their adsorptions, and the presence of sulfate ions was seen to increase the negative charges of sphalerite and pyrite, conversely for galena. IntroductionWater is among the most important elements for mining and mineral processing. The distance to water sources is one of the major factors for mine site selection. The mining and mineral processing sector needs and consumes large quantities of water. In Chile in 2014, the copper mining sector alone consumed 12.7 m3/s fresh water for 1.189 tons of ore processing, and recycled 74 percent of the consumed water (Chilean Copper Commission, 2015). A plant that does not reuse or recycle any water will require 1.9 to 3.0 m3 of water per ton of ore processed (Gunson et al., 2012). Many stages of mineral processing, such as grinding, gravity concentration, dense medium separation, wet magnetic separation, flotation and hydrometallurgical operations, use large volumes of water (Schumann, Levay and Ametov, 2009).In mineral processing plants, the process water is recycled from the tailings dams, thickener overflows, and dewatering and filtration units. Wet concentration processes can require large quantities of water. Flotation, the most common process, typically takes place at 25 to 35 percent solids by mass. Most flotation plants practice at least some water reuse and recycled. Modern mines and mineral processing operations generally aim for zero water release (Levay, Smart and Skinner, 2001). In most cases, water quality has been found to affect flotation performance, and this interaction remains under investigation."

The Automatic Extraction System (AES) was designed and built under a U.S. Department of Energy Contract by the National Mine Service Company in cooperation with the Lee Engineering Division of Consolidation Coal Company. The Pennsylvania State University, Mining Engineering Section, was contracted as an independent auditor of the AES performance. The AES had a rotating cutter drum like a continuous mining machine; but two hydraulically powered roof supports, four roof-bolting drills, a dust scrubber, a ventilation fan and ducting in the roof supports, semi-automatic control, an extensible chain conveyor, and other innovations led to the distinction "extraction system" as opposed to "miner-bolter" or "continuous mining" machine. After design and assembly, the AES was field tested experimentally in an underground coal mine. The in-mine performance audit was preceded by a computer simulation of the potential production for a later comparison with the actual tonnage mined by the AES. This paper describes the results of an in-mine trial and assesses the production potential of the AES.

"An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys, to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions, and laser scanner over a 6-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls was significantly lessened. INTRODUCTION Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the presence of tectonic loading of the strata. Horizontal stresses have a documented history of causing stability issues in underground limestone mines. Kuhnhein and Ramer (2004) discussed the influence of horizontal stress on complex ground control interactions associated with limestone pillar design and mine layouts. Esterhuizen et al. (2008) documented roof damage observations associated with high horizontal stresses such has roof guttering, beam instability, oval-shaped falls, and failure propagations. There have also been a number of documented case histories of horizontal stress causing unexpected roof and pillar failures at shallow depths (Stacey and Yathavan, 2003). To the knowledge of the authors, there has only been one well-documented case of floor failure causing stability issues in an underground limestone mine. Murphy et al. (2015) documented the role that a weak, moisture-sensitive floor had in the development of a massive roof collapse. For this paper, the study site neighbored, and was in the same general geology of, the site in Murphy et al. (2015). However, the weak, moisture-sensitive floor was not present for the current study. The current study site has experienced significant floor instabilities caused by high horizontal stresses. The instability area was monitored using two different methods to determine if the floor failure would eventually propagate into roof or pillar failure. The objective of this paper is to analyze displacement monitoring measurements from string potentiometers and remote sensing techniques in an area experiencing active movement. Based on the measurement trends and observed damage from inside of the mine, the presumed failure process will be discussed."

For the last four years, the Kilborn Group of Companies has been involved in several major projects in the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). These include the Kumtor project, the Kubaka gold project, the Kazgold project, the Aginskoe project and the Jerooy project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. Western mining companies are pursuing mining opportunities throughout the world in search of ore bodies for development. The quest for profitable mining ventures has led mining companies to South America and Asia and, more recently, to the former Soviet Union. When considering the CIS, several factors should be considered. The most notable are geography, mining culture and previous mining production.

In order to further elucidate the mechanisms involved in autogenous grinding, the fracture of rock specimens in free-fall impact was studied using the theory of elasticity. Stress distributions in rock specimens under various conditions of impact were analyzed and the conditions for failure were examined in relation to the compressive and tensile strength of rock. The energy equation derived for autogenous grinding coincides basically with Lewis' generalized formula or Oka and Majima's formula, and it is sufficiently general to incorporate all of the three older theories, viz; those of Rittinger, Bond and Kick.

"As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.

The goal of the drill bit consumption study was to develop an equation(s) based on various components that affect drill bit wear and use that equation(s) to estimate the consumption of bits during production drilling. Drill bit data from various geographic locations were compiled and used to develop linear regression equations using the Microsoft Excel software package. Multiple drill bit consumption equations were developed and statistical analysis was used to verify the accuracy of those equations. The equations will allow mining companies to more accurately forecast drill bit consumption when evaluating new mine properties. This capability becomes increasingly beneficial to forecasting as the cost of consumables increases.

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.

Epithermal Ag-Au deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. Historically, these deposits have been the source of high-grade ores. Increases in the market prices for gold and silver make lower-grade ores economically viable when available in large tonnages. Both the high-grade and bulk-tonnage ores are a consequence of the same processes, and general models of epithermal systems can be useful in the search for new precious-metal resources. A detailed study of deposits at Round Mountain, Nevada; Balei, Russia; Creede, Colorado; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Chanarcillo, Chile, indicates that the hydrodynamics of the fluid systems as determined by fracture geometries, the permeability, and composition of the host rocks are the key factors in the creation of both high-grade and bulk-tonnage epithermal deposits. End-member models that explain the range of observed deposit characteristics are: (1) the hot-springs deposition model; (2) the stacked-cell convection model (where mineral deposition occurs laterally along the interface of two partially separated fluid reservoirs); and, (3) the closed-cell convection model (where deposition occurs in vertical zones due to the relatively unimpeded vertical flow of hydrothermal fluids). Boiling and fluid mixing appear to be agents of precious-metal deposition with the self-sealing of the hydrothermal system being an important adjunct to boiling. Imaginative application of model concepts in exploration has led and can lead to the discovery of new high-grade and/or bulk-tonnage precious-metal deposits.
