A need developed to establish this training program internationally. The first international training session was held at the APEX San Cristóbal Mine in Bolivia. This paper discusses the program’s development, execution, results, and lessons learned with an emphasis on multicultural environments.

Thermodynamic data has been obtained for oleate chemisorption at fluorite (CaF2) and calcite (CaCO3) surfaces using adsorption isotherms determined previously at room and elevated temperatures by in-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS). Linear regression analysis was used to statistically derive free energy data as a function of temperature assuming oleate chemisorption followed Langmuir-type adsorption. Enthalpy and entropy changes were subsequently ascertained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and fundamental thermodynamic relationships. Essentially, no difference in the free energy of chemisorption at the two mineral surfaces was found; however, the differences in enthalpy and entropy values were significant. By comparison, the results showed that oleate chemisorption at fluorite surfaces was more extensive and more entropically driven due to more water being displaced. Results correlate well with values determined in the literature for other mineral collector systems. These findings help explain the greater hydrophobic character of fluorite than calcite in both the absence and presence of oleate.

Silver Bell produces about 22,000T of fine copper annually from low-grade chalcocite and oxidized copper ore that is recovered by sulfuric acid leaching and SX-EW processing. The current mineable reserves are 146 million short tons averaging 0.39% Cu, at a 0.15% cutoff. Silver Bell utilizes two types of mining methods to develop the low-grade reserves: (1) a conventional blast, load and haul method for run-of-mine leach ore, and (2) rubblization of material on the margins of existing pits. Rubble leach ore is blasted, terraced with a bulldozer, and leached in place. Mining and/or rubble leaching is currently active in four separate pits. Laramide-age intrusive rocks host porphyry copper mineralization at Silver Bell. Quartz monzonite porphyry dikes and stocks, mafic-poor equigranular granite (alaskite), and sub-volcanic dacite porphyry are the predominant host rocks. Most of the ore currently mined comes from near-horizontal enrichment zones containing veinlets and disseminated grains of pyrite and chalcopyrite rimmed by chalcocite. Conversion from a milling operation to a leach only operation allowed for a much lower cutoff grade than was historically used at Silver Bell. Mine geologists were able to increase copper resources by drilling exploration targets that were previously interpreted to provide lower-grade mineralization below cutoff-grade for milling. Geologic parameters that effect the distribution of rubble and mineable leach ore include: ore grade and thickness, variable alteration styles in intrusive host rocks that affect fragmentation during blasting, acid consuming carbonate wallrocks (reactive skarn) which influence leach solution pH, solution flow paths and drainage, presence of leachable oxide mineralization in non-reactive skarn, and depth to hypogene mineralization which is currently uneconomic. Geologic parameters are used to predict rubble bench limits, vary blast hole spacing for consistent fragmentation, and correct errors in mineral zone classification based solely on blast hole assays. An expansion-drilling program has identified approximately 150 million tons of new leachable copper resources with an average grade of 0.35% Cu.

There are multiple stages in a mining operation that a mining engineer has to draw polygons to be used as operation guidelines. These polygons are drawn by hand and based on engineer?s experience. However, having automatic procedures for forming the shapes can increase the quality and decrease the efforts required. These shapes need to be homogenous in grades and rock types so that the quality and dilution of material sent to the plant can be estimated with the good approximation. In this paper, a clustering algorithm with shape control is introduced which can provide reasonable guidelines for all the aforementioned shapes by manipulating its parameters. At the end, implementations of the algorithm on a small part of a gold deposit with different mining strategies is presented and evaluated based on homogeneity of grade, rock types and determined destinations as well as the shape.

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol's underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol's executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. Daw Mill Colliery, UK Coal, near Coventry in England, mines the Warwickshire Thick Seam at 800 m/2500 ft depth using longwall retreat with gateroads supported by rockbolts. Over the last eight years the mine has worked longer and wider panels with extraction heights of over 5 m. Recently the mine has experienced high deformation conditions principally from the rib sides resulting in operational issues and production delays. Investigation of rib deformation was undertaken using new inspection and measurement techniques, including systematic laser surveying, and improved rib support consumables were developed and introduced. A new rib trussing system using textile webbing has proved very successful.. A rib support management system was also developed and introduced for face retreat. This allowed rib support to be more effectively managed both for production and safety. For the current developments, new 28-mm-diameter roof and rib bolt systems have been introduced and rib bolt length has been increased to 3 m, with the aim of achieving gateroad stability over the life of the panel. Significant reductions in roof and rib deformation have been confirmed by the latest monitoring results. These ground control innovations are allowing Daw Mill?s potential to be realised. Production from 302?s face in 2008 set new UK and European records. However the support enhancement process continues and further innovations are planned.

Over the past 100 years we have witnessed a revolution in permanent magnetic materials. Prior to 1932 electrical machinery depended upon steels for both the soft and the permanent magnet structures. Because permanent magnet steels were easily demagnetized, motors, generators, loudspeakers and similar devices often used the interaction between two electromagnets. Motors and generators were mostly of the induction type, depending for function upon induced fields. The discovery of Alnico in 1931 and its rapid commercialization presaged an expansion of the industrial revolution and today, permanent magnet structures are widely utilized. [ ] DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNETS Act 1: Early Days of Permanent Magnets Alnico, which stands for aluminum, nickel and cobalt, is a family of alloys with similar structure and processing requirements. Additional elements, such as copper and titanium, are present in minor amounts to optimize magnetic properties. Alnico is known by many trade names around the world including Alcomax, Hycomax, Ticonal, Nipermag, Koerzit, Oerstit, Nialco, etc(1,2,3). In addition to the generic name ?alnico?, it is usually appended with a number representing the magnetic grade.

September 2005, Northern Dynasty Mines announced the discovery of a new, high-grade deposit at its Pebble project in southwest Alaska. The product of insightful geological investigation, Pebble East, as it is now known, is quickly growing into one of the most significant copper deposits in the world. Preliminary analysis shows it could reduce the U.S. copper supply deficit by a third. The new deposit has also altered Northern Dynasty’s view of how Pebble should be developed. This article describes the Pebble project as it is currently understood and outlines the work planned for the next several years.

The tracer gas method of conducting ventilation surveys is a means of determining air quantity in underground mines with knowledge of the concentration of the tracer in the atmosphere and the flow rate at which the tracer is being released. The technique is useful in inaccessible areas of underground mines and areas where traditional point measurement of velocity is not practical. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is the industry standard tracer(Kennedy 1987) used in underground mines because it is safe, stable, and not naturally occurring in the mine environment. The implementation of a second tracer will increase the versatility of the tracer gas technique allowing for simultaneous releases for the study of interrelated ventilation circuits, and for conducting multiple experiments in less time. This paper will detail the selection of perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) as a novel tracer with sensitivity, physical properties, and analysis characteristics similar to SF6. Methods for the release of liquid PMCH into underground mines will be recommended, and the vulnerabilities of sample loss due to condensation of vapor PMCH will be explored. Finally, the benefits and implications of using PMCH as a second tracer will be discussed.

The ST separator utilizes electrical charge differences between materials produced by surface contact or triboelectric charging. When two materials are in contact, material with a higher affinity for electrons gains electrons and thus charges negative, while material with lower electron affinity charges positive. This contact exchange of charge is universally observed for all materials, at times causing electrostatic nuisances that are a problem in some industries. Electron affinity is dependent on the chemical composition of the particle surface and will result in substantial differential charging of materials in a mixture of discrete particles of different composition. In the ST separator (Figures 1 and 2), material is fed into the thin gap 0.9 ? 1.5 cm (0.35 -0.6 in.) between two parallel planar electrodes. The particles are triboelectrically charged by inter-particle contact. For example, in the case of coal combustion fly ash, a mixture of carbon particles and mineral particles, the positively charged carbon and the negatively charged mineral are attracted to opposite electrodes. The particles are then swept up by a continuous moving open-mesh belt and conveyed in opposite directions. The belt moves the particles adjacent to each electrode toward opposite ends of the separator. The electric field need only move the particles a tiny fraction of a centimeter to move a particle from a left-moving to a right-moving stream. The counter current flow of the separating particles and continual triboelectric charging by carbon-mineral collisions provides for a multi-stage separation and results in excellent purity and recovery in a single-pass unit. The high belt speed also enables very high throughputs, up to 40 tonnes per hour on a single separator. By controlling various process parameters, such as belt speed, feed point, electrode gap and feed rate, the ST process produces low carbon fly ash at carbon contents of 2 % ± 0.5% from feed fly ashes ranging in carbon from 4% to over 30%.

The technical parametrization of reserves is a technique which has made an important contribution to the definition and the calculation of optimal mining projects. Its applications to a new open-pit optimization program have already been presented in various papers (François-Bongarçon and Maréchal (1976); François-Bongarçon and Guibal (1981)). The present paper gives a brief description of the general problem of parametrizing reserves before going into the details of the practical algorithms used in two typical cases, i.e. open-pit mining and mining between hanging wall and foot wall.

The Gilt Edge Superfund Site is a former heap-leach gold mine that currently is being remediated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mine runoff water is treated before release from the site. The field pH, before treatment, is about 3, and the water contains arsenic and some heavy metals, in addition to sulfate concentrations of about 1400 to 1500 mg/L. In the Keystone area of the Black Hills, naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in ground-water samples from wells. Keystone City Well #4, which is not used currently, showed arsenic concentrations of 36 parts per billion (ppb) and sulfate concentrations of about 19 mg/L. With field samples of water from these sites, a limestone-based method was successful in reducing arsenic and heavy metals concentrations. The results are significant because previous research with the limestone-based method mainly had involved samples prepared with distilled water in the laboratory, in which interference of other ions such as sulfate did not occur. The research indicates the potential for broader field applications of the limestone-based removal method.

The contents emphasize personnel health and safety aspects and engineering design and control practices to ensure a productive health and safety environment. Reference is to the health and safety of the individual miners as well as to the safety of the working environment. This Handbook also contains references to health and safety regulations in Chapter 3.2 and environmental protection in Chapters 3.4 and 7.3.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. "The development of indicators to assess the sustainability of mineral raw materials operations is amajor task with respect to its actuality and difficulty. This holds true even more when dealing withenvironmental indicators.The use of existing environmental indicators in the mineral raw materials industry leads to false orat least distorted results. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. These had to be adapted or completely new designed in order to match the specificcharacteristics of the mineral raw materials industry."

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

Tround International Inc. is developing rock excavation and drilling devices which utilize a simple patented mechanism for firing frangible projectiles. This system launches a salvo of three projectiles with every shot in automatic sequence. Studies conducted by Physics International Inc. have demonstrated that firing projectiles into hard rock such as granite creates fragmentation which is much faster and cheaper than conventional drilling and blasting. The Tround salvo approach enhances this further by a controlled stresswave interaction created by a slight time difference during impact of the individual projectiles. The University of Maryland is conducting additional studies to optimize these parameters.

Petrographic analysis of rocks is traditionally performed with optical microscopy using thin sections and point counting. However, this does not provide accurate mineral proportions for sedimentary, volcanic, and soil-like material, because rock fragments, groundmass, and matrix are not identified as specific minerals. In addition, groundmass phases in volcanic rocks can be too fine to identify individually, and making thin sections of intact soil-like material is difficult because much of the material is not well cemented. ModAn is a normative calculation that estimates modes ??by applying Gaussian elimination and multiple linear regression techniques to simultaneous mass balance equations? (Paktunc, 2001) and allows location-specific mineral compositions to be used. One of the features of ModAn that makes it appropriate for this study is that it can model one of several sulfide minerals. Mineral compositions for Questa minerals were determined from electron microprobe analysis and entered into ModAn. Then by combining and normalizing results, bulk quantitative mineralogy can be determined using ModAn, petrographic observations, electron microprobe analysis, clay mineral analysis, and the whole-rock chemistry of the sample.

In Part I of this paper, it was established that the width of longwall faces in highly gassy mines is primarily limited by the volume of air reaching the tail-end of the face. The ventilation air reaching the tail-end of the face should be not only enough to keep methane concentrations below the statutory limits (generally 1 percent) but also enough to prevent any gas layering. The air volume leaking from the longwall face into the gob should also be able to push the explosive methane-air mixture away from the gob area immediately behind the longwall face where active roof-fall is taking place (typically 30-45 m). The second group of variables that also controls the width of the longwall panel consists of (a) the rate of advance, (b) bleeder air quantities, (c) specific methane emissions for the gob area and, (d) efficiency and cost of gob gas capture. This paper will discuss the second group of variables and its impact on the optimum width of longwall faces in highly gassy coal mines.
