For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

The regulations for current coal mine refuge alternative (RAs) require that there be sufficient life support to sustain survival of the maximum number of RA occupants for a minimum of 96 hours. This minimum duration assumes that rescuers can access the RA through the mine within four (4) days of the onset of the mine emergency. But what if mine rescue teams cannot reach the miners within the RA before the RA air supply is severely limited or exhausted? What could be done to extend the duration of the RA life support capability into the 97th hour and beyond? In addition, what might be done to enable more rapid rescue of the miners if they could not be reached through the mine in a timely manner? This paper describes a systems approach to address the potential need to extend the duration of RA life support beyond current design limits. New capabilities that need to be developed in advance of such a dire need include more reliable emergency communications, highly mobile and efficient drilling rigs, enhanced directional drilling techniques, and a standardized RA external life support interface along with RA internal design modifications to accommodate use of an external supply. The following sections describe the need, intent, and technology gaps associated with each of these capabilities. Government agencies and the mining industry should consider initiation of a program to investigate, design, and develop effective means of extending the current 96-hour time restriction on coal mine refuge alternative life support. The development process should begin with a focused study to refine the overall operational concept, investigate the current state-of-the art of critical technologies, identify specific technology development priorities, and make recommendations for a development program to provide in an organized, efficient, and timely manner a solution for extended refuge alternative life support and occupant rescue.

This article presents a novel design, called the Climax, High Capacity Processor (HCP), for pre-combustion cleaning of coal. This design is particularly suitable for the plant capacities of 400 ~ 660 TPH. The HCP is different from the conventional designs with an equivalent throughput in three major aspects: 1) the use of one large capacity HM cyclone to separate coarse and intermediate raw coal in a single circuit; 2) the elimination of the conventional secondary magnetics recovery system by use of the high efficiency Climax, magnetic separators; 3) the use of "single line" piping with a minimum requirement of ancillary devices. In comparison with conventional designs with similar capacity, the HCP plant costs much less in capital investment, operation and maintenance.

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MOBILE MINING MACHINE INTRODUCTION Until recently, developing tunnels in hard rock has been accomplished either by the drill and blast method or by using large tunnel boring machines. Combining the flexibility of drill and blast with the safety, efficiency and productivity of a TBM has been the objective of mining machinery producers for many years. In 1979 The Robbins Company began developing a new type of tunnel boring machine called the Mobile Miner to meet these objectives. The development and testing of the Mobile Miner is the subject of this paper. CURRENT MINE DEVELOPMENT METHODS Both the drill and blast method and the use of a TBM have notable advantages and disadvantages. The drill and blast method, for example, allows much more flexibility, requires less setup time and has a lower initial cost than a TBM; however it requires the use of high explosives and blasting has a disrupting effect on the rock surrounding the development. A TBM, on the other hand, is safer to operate, more efficient, more productive and produces smooth tunnel walls without disturbing the surrounding rock. In longer straight drifts it will easily out distance the drill and blast method. The TBM, however, is limited to boring a circular cross section tunnel which must then be modified if a flat floor is required. It also has a higher initial cost and an extended setup period.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

Specifically, varying or inaccurate perceptions of risk, in addition to trust and buy-in of a risk management system, contribute to inconsistent levels of participation in risk programs. This paper focuses on one trona mine’s experience in the development and implementation of a field-level risk assessment program to help its organization understand and manage risk to an acceptable level. Through a transformational process of ongoing leadership development, support and communication, Solvay Green River fostered a culture grounded in risk assessment, safety interactions and hazard correction. The application of consistent risk assessment tools was critical to create a participatory workforce that not only talks about safety but actively identifies factors that contribute to hazards and potential incidents. In this paper, reflecting on the mine’s previous process of risk-assessment implementation provides examples of likely barriers that sites may encounter when trying to document and manage risks, as well as a variety of mini case examples that showcase how the organization worked through these barriers to facilitate the identification of leading indicators to ultimately reduce incidents.

India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

The concept of using fluid dense media to separate heavy ore constituents from the lighter gangue dates back to 1858, when it was patented by Sir Henry Bessemer. Its use in coal did not begin until after 1917, however, when Chance invented a process (which bears his name) in which lighter coal floats in a suspension of fine sand in water while heavier refuse sinks. Conklin used fine magnetite in suspension as a medium for floating anthracite in 1922, DuPont designed a plant employing organic liquids in 1936, and Belknap used a solution of calcium chloride (which Bessemer had suggested, among other media) in 1937. Separation of magnetic media by magnetic separators from the suspensions in which they were carried was introduced in a Butler Brothers ore concentrator pilot plant in 1937. The media first used were crushed steel and various grades of ferrosilicon. Since 1940, when American Cyanamid used magnetic separators to recover and clean magnetite in a coal washing circuit, virtually all heavy medium circuits have been of that type. As long as static baths are employed, as they are in the processes above, coal smaller than 9.5 mm or 6.4 mm cannot be cleaned economically in heavy medium. The settling velocities of the fine material are very low, and consequently the time required to separate the lighter coal from the heavier refuse becomes excessive. In addition, stray currents in the vessel and the upward velocities induced to keep media solids in suspension affect the finer solids to the degree that physical size becomes a more important factor than specific gravity.

Effective and sustained corporate energy management programs are becoming a necessity for energy users as electricity deregulation laws are enacted on a state-by-state basis across the country and environmental regulations pertaining to emissions become more prevalent. The “Total Energy Asset Management” (TEAM) approach has been developed to assist energy end users with the development and implementation of corporate energy management programs designed to reduce energy risks and increase energy cost savings. This paper highlights the ways in which this approach can be applied to the mining industry while minimizing initial program implementation costs and increasing potential program benefits. Nearly the entire mining industry has become very focused on identifying opportunities to reduce costs per unit of yield. The industry as a whole has increasingly faced pricing pressures in large part due to the effects of global competition. The result of international marketplace participation and the emergence of higher efficiency recovery techniques have resulted in flat or even decreased prices for mining products. Thus, opportunities to reduce costs are actually opportunities to gain a competitive edge over similar mining operations. Due to the energy-intensive nature of many mining operations, the costs associated with energy are often a substantial percentage of operating costs. Therefore, it becomes very important to develop the corporate mentality that energy is an asset whose use should be optimized globally. In addition to the cost benefits of the TEAM approach, other benefits may occur such as reductions in facility greenhouse gas emissions.

An increase in the importance of low-grade materials as sources of gold and silver has led to the need for improved analytical methods on leach solutions, ores and various effluents, residues, and in-process streams. These are required by plant operators as guides to process control and for accounting pldrposes. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) and AAS preceded by pre- concentration have been applied successfully to resolve many such problems. However, AAS is no panacea and imprecision or loss of accuracy can result if adequate precautions are not taken to prevent losses and eliminate interferences. The recent methods are discussed together with methods for overcoming difficulties. Comparisons with more classical analytical techniques are also given.

In January we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. At the same time we hired an outside firm, READEX Inc., of St. Paul, MN, to send the same questionnaire to a sampling of about 1000 US members, selected on an nth name basis, so that we could have some preliminary numbers for the Annual Meeting in February. READEX sent us the final results of its survey in March. At that time, 525 responses of the 992 surveys sent out had been returned, for a 52.9% response, an extraordinarily high return for a low-key (no incentive for return) random sampling. On May 7, we cut off on tabulating returns from the magazine so that we could report the results to you in this issue. At that time, we had 594 questionnaires returned. Our 594 and READEX's 525 (we have assumed that relatively few people returned both), represent a 1119 return, about 3.5% of the approximately 32,000 who received the January issue of ME. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded, told us something positive-you look at or read the magazine. Of the 1119 respondents, 1068 or 95.4% indicated that they had read or looked through the November and/or December issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 466 or 42.6%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 559 or 51.1%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 68 or 6.2%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Of those responding to this question: 186 spent up to 1/2 hr 16.6% 590 spent up to 1 hr 52.7% 292 spent 1-2 hr 26.1% 51 spent more than 2 hr 4.6% In an informal survey among our staff, we determined that most people spend 1/2 to 1 hr reading magazines to which they subscribe at home. Does that match your experience? Many of you, 764 or 69.4%, clip your magazine for further reference. Also, many of you, 513 or 64.2%, do not pass your copy on to another reader, indicating perhaps that you are clipping it or receiving the magazine at home. Those magazines that are passed on reach: 2 people - 159 - 20.0% 3-5 people - 95 - 11.9% 5 or more - 31 - 3.9% Answers to what portions of the magazine you find useful indicated that the top three were Industry News, feature articles, and Technical Papers; see Table 1. The "other" category included advertising-display, classified, and employment-Coming Events, product information, Washington Survey, new books, the reader service card, and Engineering Fundamentals. Of those responding, 797 or 75.3% indicated a preference for dual notation of SI (metric) with English units; 228 or 21.5% preferred all SI units; while 34 or 3.2% preferred SI with dual notation of other metric units. Based on the preliminary numbers reported by READEX for this question, the MINING ENGINEERING Committee in February voted to return to a policy of dual notation. This decision has been implemented. We asked for your appraisal of the technical level of the magazine. Of those responding, 78 or 7.4% indicated it is too technical, 147 or 13.8% indicated it is not technical enough, and 836 or 78.8% judged it to have the correct tech¬nical level. In response to the question about whether you like to read an occasional feature that is not technically oriented, 32 said no, but an overwhelming 97% (1024) said yes. High-speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However, it has been widely used in the industrial mineral field for more than 30 years. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits this requires new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two copper operations is discussed here to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD), a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are explained. The initial drive in high speed stirred milling technology was toward ultra fine grinding where the mill product has an 80 percent passing size of 15 µm (937mesh) or less. More recently, a number of installations have occurred in a more conventional regrind setting. Few conventional copper concentrators require such fine grinding to attain satisfactory copper grades and recoveries. So other advantages must be considered here rather than just the ability to grind fine with good power efficiency.

According to the world bank1, the mining industry consumes up to 11 percent of global energy use. In comparison, 70 percent of mining projects from the six largest mining companies operate in water-stressed regions. To steer the direction of the process industries toward more sustainable practices, more than 40 governments have adopted a price on carbon. This measure includes additional taxes on the use of fossil fuels, trade programs, new standards for renewable energy, energy efficiency mandates, more stringent emissions regulation, carbon offsets, etc. This emphasis is also supported by investors shifting their priorities to reduce risk by focusing on long-term plans, including environmentally friendly operations. The metals and mining industry is at the core of the green energy mix and electrification of vehicles. This new trend creates an astronomical increase in demand for minerals. Under a 2-degree scenario, according to the latest analysis from the world bank, as new energy technologies continue to grow, it is expected that all minerals to double in demand, and the distribution of these materials will depend on their application. • Solar panels, will account for 87% of the aluminum demand, and more than 95% of silver • Wind turbines and geothermal plants will require 98% zinc and 64% titanium. • Solar and wind energy alone will demand more than 74% of the global supply of copper, and this is without considering wiring or other infrastructure to connect the grid • Battery storage accounts for 100% of the graphite and lithium demand. (Hund, 2020) • Other materials, such as nickel and steel, are also projected to more than double in demand as they are cross-technology minerals. These materials require a manufacturing process that is accountable for the emissions proper of the transformation process. It requires that these processes move from a hindsight mode focused on reporting to a forecasting mode based on run-time measurement of GHG emissions. This is a critical first step in companies realizing an economic return for doing the right thing for the environment and their communities.

If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. A variety of grades of very white muscovite mica are now being produced from sedimentary sands and clays in Central Georgia. The mica is naturally concentrated near the base of the lens-shaped kaolin deposits and also disseminated in associated quartz sands. The same weathering and bacterial alteration processes which have transformed the kaolins from dark organic muds to white pigment-grade industrial clays have also removed discoloring iron from the micas and developed unusually white muscovite. Further, chemical alteration has removed some potassium from the muscovite atomic structure, resulting in an easily delaminated mica which can be cleaved to unusually fine, high bulking, high aspect ratio products. The peculiar alteration history of these sedimentary micas enables production of some of the whitest, finest particle size, and thinnest aspect ratio muscovite mica products on the world market today. Raw mica feed is obtained from kaolin and sand processing by-products, and also from beneath the useful base of abandoned kaolin mines. The processed ultrafine and filler grade muscovite mica products are used for paint, plastics, cosmetics, mold release, thermal and electrical insulation, epoxy, and dry wall joint cement markets.

Coal mines in the eastern US often use sloped shafts as production beltways for ore removal, as means of access for supplies, and for ventilation. These structures are usually completed with the help of a contractor. In late 2011, Frontier-Kemper Constructors was engaged to build a slope for a coal mine in southern Indiana. Although the site was located in familiar Illinois basin formations, the geology proved to be very difficult. This paper describes some of the challenges faced during excavation of this slope and the methods used to overcome them, including changing the method from conventional drill and blast to cutting with a continuous miner.

The mining industry faces many workplace hazards that are a threat to human health and safety. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that employees in coal mining are more likely to be killed or sustain an injury or illness than workers in private industry. These injuries are also likely to be more severe (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2007). In recent years, coal mining injuries have attained national attention due to highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year(National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment, such as the norms, rules, and common understandings that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to introduce the mining industry to a multi-methodological approach to safety culture assessments. Further, it is the goal of this manuscript to highlight the value of including both quantitative and qualitative methods into safety culture assessments in order to obtain the most comprehensive view of an organization?s safety culture. Because this manuscript focuses solely on the methodology implemented, data and results obtained during the five safety culture assessments will not be presented in this manuscript, but will appear in a future publication.

By using the data of E.A. Hersam and F.C. Bond's equation for energy consumption in comminution, a method was developed to analyze the performance of industrial jaw crushers. The study showed that industrial jaw crushers are generally operated below capacity. The study also showed that industrial jaw crushers generally have sufficient installed power to operate at, full capacity. The method presented can be used to estimate the capacities and power requirements of jaw crushers.
