Today the roller screen has a wide range of applications in the steel-making industry. It is used for screening of green pellets before using the kiln. Since the appropriate size of a green pellet is -16+9 mm, there are different gaps between rollers that make green pellets classified in three categories: -9 mm (undersize), -16+9 mm (onsize) and +16mm (oversize). The efficiency of a roller screen is specified according to the weight percent of undersize in onsize as a fine material, and weight percent of onsize in oversize (loss). This efficiency is influenced by different operational parameters such as roller diameter, roller speed, and roller gap, material type of rollers and inclination of roller screen. This study investigates the effect of different material types of rollers in efficiency of Ardakan roller screens, located in the Yazd province of Iran. The rollers of the existing roller screens in this pelletising plant are made of polyurethane which according to this investigation, has a maximum lifetime of about six months. Operating the polyurethane rollers beyond its lifetime generates serious problems such as high wear of rollers, and consequently, material buildup on the roller surface which then significantly decreases the roller screen efficiency. So, after examining different roller materials, stainless steel 304 with higher surface roughness to help pellets move properly on the roller screen surface was selected as a solution to this problem. The new roller screen was constructed by Fakoor Meghnatis Spadana (FMS) and replaced the previous one. In this way, the maximum capacity of the roller screen was increased about 17% and the roller screen efficiency was increased about 15%. He, Mr Henzen and Mr Funke have written this paper, 'The disposal of polluted effluents from mining, metallurgical and metal-finishing industries, their effects on receiving water and remedial measures.' This is the Water Year, as you know, and it is most appropriate that we should have such an authority to talk to us on this very important topic. There are many people who have put their finger on this campaign and said, it is all a gimmick. There are others-I suppose notably some of the bridge clubs which operate on week-day afternoons in Parkview-who seem to think that this is a quick way of getting early rain. Of course, it is not. This is a most important paper which we have had given to us this afternoon. You probably found it here when you arrived and have not read it-I was very lucky to be able to read it last night, and there is an awful lot of meat in it. For as long as I have been associated with mining in any way, there has been a problem of polluted effluent-of effluents carrying a mineral load from mining, and I think Dr Stander is absolutely right-and, of course, the Commission is right when they say that this is not merely the problem of mine management or mine owners-this is a problem which affects every single human being in this country.

Introductory remarks Dr N. G. W. Cook: This paper was published in your Journal in May of this year and you will, therefore, have had the opportunity of reading it over the past six months. I can state that experience has shown that the paper is substantially correct, but a number of questions have to be answered. The first question, Mr President, that I would be happy to answer, is how is it that one is able to cut hard, abrasive quartzite with a strength some six times greater than that of good concrete? The essence of the answer is that there is a tremendous difference between abrasion, or scratching, and cutting, or chipping. For example, it is well known that a diamond will scratch or abrade almost anything. It is also relatively easy to chip, crack or crush a diamond. As a demonstration I have here an ordinary bench grinder, and with the bench grinder I also have a piece of tool steel. The wheel on this bench grinder is a silicon carbide wheel, which is an extremely hard material, and the tool steel is much softer. In rock-cutting we use tungsten carbide for cutting the quartzite. The quartzite and the tool steel have roughly the same hardness. You can sharpen tungsten carbide with a silicon carbide wheel. In fact, this is done. It won't surprise any of you, therefore, when I show you that tool steel can be sharpened with silicon carbide. Now, what I propose to do is to change the configuration of this experiment and use the soft tool steel to cut silicon carbide, and if I can do that, I think you will agree that I have gone some way to being able to cut quartzite, which is about as hard as tool steel, with tungsten carbide, which is harder than quartzite. Let me do this. (Demonstrates.) That, I think, is a very clear demonstration of how it is possible, with a metal, to cut an extremely hard and brittle material. What, essentially, is the difference that we have here? In the first case, I held the tool with a relatively low force against the hard silicon carbide wheel. This generated a relatively low average stress, which was insufficient to fracture the carbide wheel. Nevertheless the protuberances on the silicon carbide wheel indented the tool steel and abraded it at a multiplicity of points, and quickly reduced the section of the tool steel that I held against the wheel. By changing the configuration and clamping my tool steel in a firm post, against the silicon carbide wheel, I changed these conditions very extensively. I now had a high force. I had to exert a considerable moment on that lever. The tool was anchored so that it could sustain these high forces, and they generated high stresses, which were adquate to fracture the silicon carbide. Now, what about wear? It so happens that, in these two experiments I have just done, the power I was using was about the same-a small fraction of a horse power.

The internal rate of return (IRR) is one of the most popular project evaluation criteria in the mineral industry, as well as in other industrial sectors. Analysis of its assumptions reveals, however, that this criterion does not function in the way it is supposed to. The search for a new criterion that would reflect the true rate of return (TRR) of an investment project or the true borrowing rate (TBR) of a borrowing project has led to the development of several approaches, yielding, for the same project, generally different values of the interest rate in question. Two of those approaches have been selected as the most representative and practical. Each has been presented in two variants, and subsequently analysed. As a result, it is shown that the various approaches to the TRR/TBR are all consistent with the net present value (NPV) criterion, and that each can serve as an independent project evaluation instrument, provided its assumptions can be regarded in a given situation as realistic enough.

Body breakage usually involves breakage of particles by compression between two surfaces or impacted against a rigid surface, with the latter of interest in this current study. This mode of breakage has been identified to be the most elementary size reduction process and the most effective breakage process in comminution devices. It has been found in the literature that the progenies produced from this form of breakage possess a residual velocity at which they move, after the breakage event. In the pursuit of efficiently utilising applied comminution energy, a laboratory-scale breakage device has been developed to deliver precise specific impact breakage using the concept of a fast-moving hammer and a slow-moving particle to effect breakage. The residual velocities of the progenies from the breakage event may be used to generate secondary breakage without further addition of energy if the particle encounters a stiff obstacle such as a steel plate at right angles to its path. To measure the extent of secondary breakage, the steel wall of the device was lined with a rubber material to suppress the second set of breakage events. The performance of the new device is analysed, based on calculated t10 values and measured residual velocities of the moving daughter particles. Testing involving anvils showed a much finer PSD and higher t10 compared to the test involving rubber lining. This finding is corroborated by the measured residual velocities of the progenies. The resulting energies calculated from the measured residual velocities of the progeny were found to be approximately 42-88% of the primary specific impact energy. "Matheron's geoslalislical method for the estimation of ore reserves has been developed to the point at which real-life problem may be handled effectively. The steps involved in the method are:(i) obtalning the variogram,(ii) fitting a model, and(iii) producing block estimates.All three steps may cause difficulty, and would-be users need a deep understanding of the theory if failure is to be avoided.To illustrate these points, specific cause are considered:(i) two almost equidimensional porpbyry deposits, one drilled randomly and the other regularly; and(ii) two iron formation, one drilled extensively and being mined, while the other is still at the stage of early estimation."

Due to the ultrafine particle size required for effective processing of chromite ores, dewatering of the concentrates presents a challenge. It is not uncommon for the ore to have elevated moisture contents even after dewatering, which must be reduced to required levels of between 8% and 10% by mass for further processing. Contact sorption drying has shown promise in test work on fine coal. This method was used to study the dewatering of chromite on a laboratory scale using 3 mm spherical activated alumina ceramic beads as a sorbent. Three different sorbent-to-chromite mass ratios, namely 0.5:1, 1:1, and 2:1, were tested with different process conditions, including dewatering in a stationary and a rotatingl bed. The experimental work showed that it was possible to achieve the target moistures in less than 10 minutes, irrespective of the sorbent-to-chromite ratio used. Ratios of 1:1 or higher, however, proved to be the best. The sorbent reusability at mass ratios of 1:1 and 2:1 were therefore tested. With a 1:1 mass ratio, the sorbents could be reused for three cycles, while with 2:1 ratio, the number of cycles increased to six. The sorbent-to-chromite mass ratio used had a significant influence on the required contact time and the reusability of the sorbents.

The prediction of the mechanical behaviour of South African coal on the basis of current proximate and other chemical parameters gives rise to problems, and the use of ultimate analyses and inferred maceral and rank analyses, although it has improved the situation to some extent, is still not satisfactory. In an attempt to reach a new level of understanding, this paper gives an in-depth review of the fundamental petrographic characteristics of coal and compares these parameters with the main types of mechanical performance. A two-tiered system of primary and secondary parameters is proposed for the prediction of coal behaviour. The primary or inherent parameters include rank and organic composition. The secondary or extraneous factors include such parameters as mineral mater, cracks or cleats, degree of oxidation, and size. In addition, an explanation is offered of several anomalous behavioural conditions in some South African coals.

This paper reviews some of the traditional methods of reserves estimation based on lognormal distribution with or without an additive constant. In the rush to computerize mine planning and grade control generaly, proven estimation methods, such as Sichel's t, seem to have been overlooked. By use of a personal microcomputer, the traditional methods were investigated thoroughly, the results being tested against existing tables and figures. The fitting of a lognormal distribution, including estimation of the additive constant, is discussed, and the calculation of Sichel's t estimator and its associated confidence limits is described in detail. Payability calculations for a lognormal distribution are also covered briefly. The advantages of personal computers, particularly speed and ease of use, are emphasized. This low-cost approach permits detailed investigation of some of the assumptions and approximations inherent in the established methods of calculation. Several disturbing discrepancies are revealed in various factors, and some generalized statements made by previous authors are found to be over-simplistic. Full details are given of acceptable approximations and computer algorithms, and concern is expressed over the possible loss of proven methods under the welter of new, sophisticated computer software.

As part of a broader digital technology-enabled transformation programme, a major mining company is systematically implementing Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions and associated instrumentation throughout their operations. This paper highlights the approach and benefits of this holistic approach for a specific instrumentation installation, and APC installation at a South African coal processing plant. For the coal processing plant under consideration, a systematic approach was followed. Process sections/units are considered from upstream to downstream processing. APC solutions are designed for each process section and each process section is interrogated in terms of availability of sufficient process measurements to ensure stable, capable, and ultimately, optimised performance. Where insufficient process measurements are available, instrumentation upgrades are implemented. Finally, APC solutions are implemented, and evaluated in terms of productivity, safety, health, and environmental benefits. For the flotation section, an opportunity was identified to install froth sensors. The installed froth sensors provide measurements on froth velocity, bubble size, height, colour, and stability. The improved visibility that the froth sensors provided on the flotation process resulted in quick gains in terms of productivity: for example, instability in the feed to the flotation section could be quantified. This resulted in targeted process troubleshooting in an upstream thickener, and subsequent improvement of process stability, and reduced feed variance. The measurements from the froth sensors were further integrated in an APC solution. Proportional mass pull contributions per cell and per line can be inferred from the froth sensors, serving as controlled variables, while pulp level set points serve as the manipulated variables. On-off tests indicated that the advanced process control solution provided increases in yield and product quality.

The gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed includes a complex multiphase fluid-particle system; different complex exchanges significantly affect the stability of the fluidised bed. To elucidate the characteristics of fluidisation in a gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed, this study used experimental performance tests to obtain the static density characteristics, and the attachment and flow characteristic of the dense medium. The results indicate that the bulk density of the dense medium increases first and then decreases with the increase of particle size. The airflow rate difference is used to quantify the wall attachment characteristics of dense medium and the average pressure gradient in the axial direction of the bed is approximately 20 Pa/mm under the fluidisation results. At the same settlement location, with the decrease of fluidisation number, the settlement velocity of large and small particles becomes slower, the boundaries of settlement displacement and location probability are gradually disrupted, and the falling velocity of particles with a radius of 20 mm is faster than that of materials with a radius of 15 mm. This work also established a theoretical basis for regulating the stability and separation characteristics of gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed. I read your paper in the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with great interest, and must compliment you on its brilliance. However, there are some questions I should like to ask, and certain points I should like to highlight. I should appreciate your comments. Written contribution by J.F. Curtis The comprehensive and finely detailed survey of, and proposals for, engineering education in South Africa reflects the author's wide experience in the needs for, and the provision of, such education. This paper wil make a major contribution to the enhancement of the profession of engineering and the improvement in quality of engineering activities in South Africa. Contribution by G.W. Annandalet I have studied your paper in some detail, and am of the opinion that it makes an important contribution to the topic of the development of technological manpower, which is currently being debated in South Africa at al levels. Debate on this topic has risen above the level of academic discussion; it has been discussed by the Economic Advisory Council of the President, and is being considered at Ministerial level. Author's reply to L.J. Besaans Thank you for your contribution and complimentary remarks. As you have pointed out, there are certainly many aspects that will have to be addressed in the resolution of the crisis in engineering education. I trust that the following comments satisfactorily answer the queries you have raised. Author's General Comments Since publication of the paper, attention has become focused on the provision of employment opportunities an aspect not dealt with specifically in the paper. The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

On 23rd November, 1982, a party of 80 members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy left the Wanderers Club grounds at 07hOO, and were driven in two luxury coaches to the stainless-steel mill of Southern Cross at Middelburg. Southern Cross is a trade name adopted by MS & A (Middelburg Steel and Alloys), who operate two Alloy Divisions (at Middelburg and Krugersdorp) and one Steel Division (at Middelburg). METAL '83 The International Precious Metals Institute has scheduled a seminar on the platinum -group metals for Williamsburg, DB.A., on 10th to 13th April, 1983, and has announced its keynote speakers for each of the seminar's five sessions. The practice of leaving barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels at The Durban Navigation Collieries (Pty) Ltd (Dumacol) has resulted in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Dumacol has now modified the layout of its longwall panels to allow the concurrent mining of barri9f pillars and the extraction of the longwalls. The Implementation of the new panel layout has increased the percentage extraction of reserves and will result in an extension in the life of the mine. The method of extracting barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels is described in this paper.

"SynopsisThe development of plasma technology at Necsa started in the early 1980s, when the applicability of high-temperature plasmas in the nuclear fuel cycle was investigated. Since 1995, this plasma expertise has expanded to other industrial applications, for example mineral beneficiation, nanotechnology, fluorocarbon production and waste treatment, all of which are also of relevance to the nuclear industry.Necsa has demonstrated the manufacture of plasma-dissociated zircon, zirconium metal powder, carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide (SiC), zirconium carbide (ZrC) and boron carbide (B4C) at the laboratory and pilot plant scale. These materials are commonly used in the nuclear industry. Zirconium alloys are used as fuel cladding material for nuclear fuel assemblies.Necsa manufactured the monomer tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), using 150 and 450 kW DC plasma systems, from which the polymer polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was synthesized for use in filters and as seals in nuclear plants. With the nuclear renaissance at hand, it was demonstrated that plasma technology can be used to produce hydrofluoric acid (HF), which is used in the manufacture of fluorine gas (F2) for the production of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) directly from the mineral calcium fluoride (CaF2) without the use of sulphuric acid as in the conventional process. The recovery of valuable uranium from nuclear waste such as filters, oils, and solids with plasma processes will also be discussed. The destruction of low-level nuclear waste by a plasma gasification system can reduce the volume of this waste by several orders in magnitude, resulting in huge savings in the storage costs. Another product of plasma technology is the encapsulation process for nuclear waste and the production of vitrified product, which could be used as filler material for medium-level nuclear waste.IntroductionDuring the 1980s, a plasma research and development programme was launched at the erstwhile Uranium Enrichment Corporation of South Africa (UCOR) at Valindaba outside Pretoria. The main purpose of this programme was to develop alternative and more economical processes for the processing and manufacturing of uranium compounds used in the nuclear fuel cycle. The conversion of UO2 (as received from uranium mines) to UF6, which is needed for enrichment, conventionally involves several laborious, expensive, chemical processing steps. Plasma processes can eliminate several of the intermediate steps. Enriched UF6 is converted to UO2, which is pressed into pellets that are used in nuclear power plants. Plasma technology could also be used in a modified and optimized conversion process."

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact
