This report gives the results of 26 tests of a four-pass Edgemoor boiler fired with powdered coal at the Lakeside station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The tests were made by the fuel section of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the research department of the Combustion Engineering Corporation and the operating department of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The object of the tests was to determine the thermal efficiencies and capacities obtainable by burning powdered coal under large central-station boilers, and the possibility of operating such boilers continuously at high efficiency and capacity without destructive effect on the furnaces and without difficulties in refuse removal. In any system for burning pulverized coal the furnace is the most important part because, to justify the cost of pulverizing, the powdered coal must be burned with higher efficiency than coal fired with mechanical stokers. In other words, it is the furnace that by giving higher thermal efficiency must pay for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the pulverizing equipment. No matter how simple the apparatus for the preparation of pulverized coal may be, or how simple the pulverizing process, unless the furnace is so designed that it can be operated continuously with high thermal efficiency, the whole system is a failure. For high thermal efficiency the coal must be burned almost completely with low excess air. But low excess air and complete combustion give high furnace temperature, which in turn causes erosion of the furnace lining and fusion of the ash; and removal of the fused ash is difficult. The necessity of complete combustion with low excess air thus brings with it these two important problems in the design of a furnace for burning powdered coal: 1, Prevention of erosion of the furnace lining; 2, easy removal of refuse from the furnace. For the purpose of solving these problems, the boiler tested was equipped with a furnace having hollow walls, through which about 60 per cent of the air needed for combustion passed before it entered the furnace. By passing through the hollow walls, the air cooled the furnace lining and prevented excessive erosion. A water screen was placed in the furnace about 3 feet above the bottom to keep the refuse deposited at the bottom from fusing and to make its removal easy. The design of the furnace, water screen, and burners was based on the experience gained in the previous cooperative tests1 with a smaller furnace, experimental water screen, and burners at the Oneida Street station of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Co. The boiler tested had 13,057 square feet of heating surface. It was one of eight boilers fired with powdered coal, and was designated as boiler No. 8. The Lakeside station is the largest central station in the world that burns powdered coal exclusively. The coal used in the first five tests came from Illinois. The fuel in the other tests -:vas a mixture of Illinois and Pittsburgh coals.

This report is the fourth in the series, Bibliography of Investment and Operating Costs for Chemical and Petroleum Plants. The initial work, Bureau of Mines In- formation Circular 7516, was published in October 1949 in conjunction with the synthetic liquid fuels program authorized by Public Law 290, 78th Congress. It included references to and abstracts of publications appearing from 1930 to September 1948 on all processes in general use in the petroleum refining and chemical industries. A supplemental bibliography, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7705, was published in January 1955 to cover the period September 1948 through June 1952; and Supplement 2, Information Circular 7751, published in September 1956, covered the period June 1952 through June 1954. This paper has been prepared as a progress report in connection with the series of articles on mining methods and costs which are being published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the form of information circulars. Then enough circulars have been completed it is planned to publish a more complete and comprehensive paper in bulletin form dealing with the subject of underground transportation. Progress reports, followed by bulletins, will be prepared from time to time dealing with other subjects included in the general study of mining methods at individual mines, such as mine development, drilling, and blasting; stoping methods (each principal stoping method to be summarized in a separate paper); ventilation; wage, contract end bonus systems, etc.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1981 was $312.7 million, a decrease of $15.7 million from that of 1980. Output of most non fuel minerals declined; cement, crushed stone, lime, clays, and sand and gravel were the major commodities produced in the State. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in native asphalt, kaolin, and oyster shell; fourth in bentonite, dimension marble, and fire clay; fifth in masonry cement; and sixth in common clay, ferroalloys, and lime.

The purpose of this book is to provide an indication of what good hoisting practice is and how it might be achieved. To this end the book contains discussions of equipment and inspection and maintenance procedures developed and used by mining people in striving for safe, reliable hoisting equipment. Most of this information comes from domestic practice; the rest is foreign, notably from Canada. Most things discussed have long proved their general worth, and others promise to; a few are beginnings. However, nothing is conjectural or theoretical; the practices described herein are in use somewhere in the mining world. The stress is on equipment in use; it is not a design-guidelines manual. Nevertheless, there are some sections dealing with design material since it may be of value in a maintenance/ replacement sense. Mine hoisting installations encompass such a wide variety of equipment and conditions that it is impractical to specifically cover them all. This book mainly treats conventional systems using conventional components with some discussion of the more common unconventional (special) systems in use. There is no recognized definition for a "conventional" mine-hoisting system. Herein the term means those systems most commonly used in daily operations for transporting men, materials, and product-electrically driven drum and friction hoists, with guided conveyances running in vertical or inclined shafts. Beyond this, what "conventional" means is probably best illustrated by the topics discussed.

"INTRODUCTION North Carolina has been the leading producer of mica in the United States, accounting for roughly 50 percent of the Nation's output. The producing area is a belt some 100 miles in width lying in the Mountain and Piedmont sections in the western part of the State. Ashe, Watauga, Avery, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, Transylvania, Rutherford, Cleveland, and Lincoln Counties supply the bulk of production, while small amounts have been produced in Gaston, Catawba, Burke, Wilkes, Yadkin, Stokes, and Person Counties.To assist the operators and expedite the production of mica during the recent emergency, the Bureau of Mines drilled four of the more promising mica properties in this State. The results of this exploratory program are recorded in this report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This book is one of a series of publications being issued by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of disseminating information in regard to the methods by which the fuels in this' country may be used most efficiently. A knowledge of the temperature of the gases in boiler settings and in other commercial apparatus using heat tends to develop improved designs of apparatus and better methods of operation, thus reducing waste of fuel. The following pages present, for the benefit of those designing, operating, and testing such apparatus, information as to the accuracy of temperature measurements made under certain conditions and the corrections that can be safely applied.

More gold is being produced now than ever before in recorded history. All over the world huge quantities of ore are being mined and processed, thanks to historically high prices for gold and the use of processing techniques demonstrated as cost efficient in the last 20 years. Over the past 10-15 years prices for many other metals have been depressed, and gold has accounted for a significant proportion of worldwide exploration and development expenditures(l)1. The revenues generated from gold mining are providing greater return on investment, more jobs, and more tax revenues to national governments than ever before. Emerging nations are using the gold industry as a springboard for development; developed nations are continuing to fuel their economies with gold industry revenues; and China and countries of the former Soviet Union are using the gold industry to generate foreign exchange, modernize their mining industries, and take the first tentative steps toward private sector participation in their economies.

To aid in winning the recent world war, the Bureau of Mines conducted a National Fuel Efficiency Program, directed to commercial plants throughout the Nation, to save greatly needed fuel, a basic resource vital to industrial production. In planning this program it was realized that to accomplish a satisfactory reduction in fuel consumption in any plant, it would be necessary to reach, enthuse, and usually educate to some extent the actual operators of the various types of plant equipment. A major part of the programs consisted, therefore, of visits to plants and work with the operators, including a review with them of their operating conditions and of educational and guiding literature pertinent to the operating problems involved. Through a Nation-wide organization, local volunteer engineers served in making visits to local plants. Each cooperating plant appointed an employee as the "waste chaser," who headed the work of saving fuel in that plant. The educational literature was designed to interest the operator, as well as serve as a guide in eliminating waste of fuel. Volumes have been written on many subjects relating to the saving of fuel. Writings of the treatise type contain considerable good information but do not have wide appeal and probably will be read only by a few studious operators. The problem is not one of getting clown on paper everything that the experts know and would like to have the operator know, but rather to write something that will actually interest the operator and stimulate him to action. Past experience led to the adoption, therefore, of the "quiz-sheet" type of writing, using a quiz sheet of not more than two pages for any principal item. The results obtained during the National Fuel Efficiency Program in many types of plants further demonstrated that the short quiz sheet is satisfactorily appropriate and does accomplish results. This report presents a structural-mesh-generating computer program for the two-dimensional finite-clement method of mine structural analysis of single and multiple openings in nonhomogeneous rock mass. This program greatly reduces the amount of input data required and the chances of error which otherwise are large owing to the large amounts of data and the complex mesh involved. The program description, a user's guide, example problems, and program listing are included.

The investigations of fuels conducted by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey had their inception at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. By an act approved Febru- ary 18, 1904, Congress authorized the work of analyzing and testing at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition the coals and lignites of the United States, under the supervision of the Director of the United States Geological Survey. An appropriation of $30,000 was made for this purpose. In the general deficiency bill dated April 27, 1904, the sum of $30,000 was added to the appropriation. To carry out these investigations the Director of the Geological Survey appointed a committee consisting of E. W. Parker, statistician of the Geological Survey; Joseph A. Holmes, State geologist of North Carolina; and Marius R. Campbell, a geologist of the Geological Survey. Under the first act authorizing this work all of the machinery and coal for the tests was to be furnished the Government free of charge. The buildings containing the testing apparatus were all paid for out of the first appropriation. After the close of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition every Congress made an appropriation for continuing these fuel tests. These subsequent appropriations permitted the purchase of appliances better adapted for the testing work.

The use of Diesel fuel as a source of power is continuing to increase in the United States. The latest available figures indicate that refineries are delivering in excess of 10,000,000 barrels of this type of fuel per month. Factors contributing to this increased consumption are conversions by a number of railroads from steam to Diesel locomotives and the growing use of Diesel engines in buses, trucks, tractors, earth-moving machinery, water craft, and stationary power plants. The increasing importance of Diesel fuel has led to a need for more information on its characteristics, particularly on the grades and qualities currently being marketed. To supply this information the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, are conducting annual surveys of Diesel fuels produced in refineries in this country. Samples of Diesel fuel were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions from the Motor-Fuels Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines where the data were studied am compiled as shown in the tables of this report. The first survey was made in 1950 and was published as a Bureau of Mines report. The present report shows the results of a similar survey made during 1951.

The value of mineral production in Alabama continued to increase and reached a new high of $260 million, 3 percent above the previous high established in 1967. Record high values were reported for bentonite, crushed marble, lime, miscellaneous clay, portland cement, salt, sand and gravel, and scrap mica. The value of coal, total cement, petroleum, and stone accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite and scrap mica and third in kaolin, masonry cement, and native asphalt.

The overall objective of this study is to gather operational data from selected surface coal mining systems in the United States, and to assess the potential production and economic capacity of the systems. The study includes: four mines, each using a different mining technique and different equipment. One mine was selected from each of the major coal fields: Midwestern, eastern,, northwestern, and southwestern. The Midwestern Mine is located in the Central Plains and produced 1.45 million tons of raw coal during the study year The Midwestern Mine uses the area mining or box-cut technique. A large in-pit shovel and a bucket wheel excavator are used to remove the overburden. Coal is removed by a loading shovel and transported to the dumping point by large off--highway trucks.

Preliminary examinations of the Parker and Webb deposits were made by E. E. Maillott, Bureau of Mines engineer in July 1942. The chemical and spectrographic analyses included in this report wore made at the Eastern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at College Park, Md., under the general supervision successively of S. M. Shelton and of Paul M. Tyler, formerly regional engineer, Eastern Region. Beneficiation tests were conducted under the supervision of Frank D. Lamb. Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

The Bureau of Mines estimated reclamation costs for 13 surface coal mines in nine States west of the Missisisppi River. With the exception of the Pacific Coast coal province, at least one mine in each of the western coal provinces was studied. Cost estimates were, made using standard estimating procedures from data obtained from company records, interviews with industry personnel, and onsite observations. Estimated costs are presented in four categories which represent the four phases of mined-land reclamation: (1) Design, engineering, and overhead; (2) bond and permit fees; (3) backfilling and grading; and (4) revegetation. Estimated costs as of the first quarter of 1976 are expressed as averages and ranges in terms of per acre, per ton of coal produced, and per million Btu. Total reclamation costs ranged from $860 to $7,200 per acre, from 6 to 84 cents per ton, and from 4 to 35.3 mills per million Btu. A mine in the Northern Great Plains coal province (Region D) showed the highest per acre cost whereas mines in part of the western region of the Interior coal province (Region A) experienced the greatest per ton and per million Btu cost. The high cost of reclamation in the Western United States is reflected in the backfill in and grading category, particularly in the cost of topsoil removal and subsequent replacement as required by individual State reclamation regulations.

This report summarizes the cost of U.S, mining and milling industry compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim water quality guidelines for waste discharges. Applicable excerpts from Public Law 92-500 are stated and interpreted in conjunction with the guidelines being used for implementation of the law. Over 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applications for discharge permits were used to develop the quality and quantity data base needed to estimate the cost to comply with EPA guidelines, Cost of three basic treatment methods were considered: Aeration, addition of lime, and sedimentation. From the process design, cost-capacity graphs were developed to consider maximum flow rate, maxi lime addition, and average flow rates. The graphical method used in this evaluation should provide a reasonable guide to the effect of waste treatment and, therefore, Public Law 92-500 and corresponding EPA guidelines on the mineral processing industry. The cost of complying with the EPA guidelines will have the effect of prompting the mining industry to minimize the production of waste water and of undertaking some additional treatment, Two case studies are presented to illustrate efforts that might be fruitful for minimizing waste water production and for treatment of combinations of acid mine drainage, mill wastes, and metallurgical process wastes when treatment is deemed necessary.

"INTRODUCTION In the investigation being conducted by the Bureau of Mines concerning the production and utilization of sponge iron, it soon became evident that more information was needed regarding methods for determining the degree of reduction attained in the manufacturing process. Sponge irons made by different processes vary in physical characteristics and chemical composition, and a method of analysis that is suitable for one type is not necessarily applicable to all others. For example, the hydrogen-evolution method, which measures the volume of hydrogen evolved upon treating the sample with acid, accurately determines the oxygen content of some types of sponge iron. However, when the sponge iron contains combined carbon, hydrocarbon gases are also-evolved and large errors may result. Probably no single method will give accurate results in all instances, and for this reason it is desirable to have several reliable procedures available and to know the limitations of each.For measuring the degree of reduction, determination of either metallic iron or oxygen should suffice, although for practical application of sponge iron to the production of steel the oxygen content is more significant. After consideration of proposed methods of analysis in regard to their suitability for routine use and the probable influence of other substances, four procedures were chosen for investigation:(1) Mercuric chloride method.(2) Copper sulfate method.(3) Hydrogen-reduction method.(4) Hydrogen-evolution methods."
