To control direct blasting costs many open pit mines dewater and line wet blastholes before loading them with ANFO or Heavy ANFO blends of explosives. The plastic lay-flat tubing used for these liners can be punctured during loading and allow water to partly dissolve and desensitise the explosive column which reduces blasting performance.

The long awaited arrival of a high accuracy detonator to reach the explosives end user will provide new opportunities the blasting community to become better equipped and able to improve upon the current approaches and methodologies used in blast design as they apply to the mitigation of adverse effects from blasting. This paper will detail the approach and findings throughout a several month research project to quantify the high accuracy detonator benefits and to mitigate a long standing vibration problem at a hard rock stone quarry in the state of New York. The tests conducted in this study were designed to provide important information as to the relationship between the use of high accuracy detonators and overall blast performance in terms of ground vibration prediction, control and improved rock fragmentation.

In this paper, the model of optimizing selection on preparation of Powdery Emulsion Explosives(PEE) is established by the Neural Net Theory(NNT). On the basis of some data in the study of PEE, the training, prediction and optimizing selection of the Neural Net (NN) model are finished by a compiling procedure. In mining simulation for fragmentation results prediction is of utmost importance to study feasibility, ensure safety, and estimate the correct use of resources in drilling an explosive to meet requirements and avoid excessive usage. One critical case is fragmentation prediction, developed through models. Developing a fragmentation model in a mining unit aims to control blasting results to align theoretical and real data and improve correlation. Therefore, it is essential to collect post-blast fragmentation data, organize it, and systematically process it to develop a suitable model that meets variable requirements. Using a robust system of equations, this model should generate the required results with minimal variability between simulation and actual results. Additionally, this model must be adaptive to reduce this variability. Studying the most known and used models in mining resulted in our work correlating Cunningham 2006, Swebrec, and CZM models. Thus, the Simfrag model was created, presenting a robust foundation and combining the most notable advantages of the aforementioned models.

My old passport from Czechoslovakia has a stamp with date 10-10-1968 at 10:00 AM, the exact time I crossed the border between the former Czechoslovak Republic and Austria. Apogee Coal Company, DBA Arch of West Virginia, faced the challenge of drilling and blasting over one million cubic yards of high temperature overburden at its Ruffner surface operation near Logan, West Virginia. The overburden was removed above the Upper Five Block seam that was previously deep mined, abandoned, and later engulfed by fire. Borehole temperatures were measured above 700” F.

Optimization of blasting requires the comprehension of processes including drilling through milling. The author has previously considered the role of powder factor in relationship to downstream processing costs. Recent modeling done by Lownds provides improved prediction of fragmentation based on the distribution and level of blast energy. Many recent studies have indicated improved downstream costs due to higher powder factor. However, changes in powder factor are accompanied by changes in pattern. The purpose is to segregate the effects of higher powder factor from powder distribution. This paper will attempt to use typical Mesabi Range iron ore parameters and costs to illuminate the subject of total process optimization.

A new strain-based criteria is being adopted for rock blasting in New York City (NYC). This criteria is based on several years of research involving vibration measurements of tall structures during blasting within several feet from buildings designated historic and Landmarked. This research has demonstrated that tall, heavy structures show little upper-structure vibratory response during hard-rock, urban blasting carried out in NYC. The Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) permits rock blasting and regulated limits for ground vibrations using the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) safe blasting criteria. However, these regulations are often superseded by a 0.5 in/s (12.7 mm/s) limit imposed by the New York City Department of Buildings for historic and Landmarked buildings that are adjacent to the majority of blasting projects in the City. This paper summarizes explosives transportation incident and accident data collected by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) from 1993 to 1998. The paper briefly describes the legislation and regulations that cover hazardous materials transportation. The multimodal incident data collected by the Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) contained 86 incidents involving Class 1 materials during transit. Thirty-two occurred on public highways. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) data showed there were 8 1 motor-vehicle accidents involving explosives. The FHWA Crash datafile extract contained 649 records categorized as involving Class 1 materials although closer analysis revealed that nearly 90% of these did not involve explosives. In both databases, there were no fatalities caused by the explosive materials although 7 fatalities were the result of injuries suffered during the motorvehicle accident. There were also no serious explosions during any of these incidents or accidents. The paper concludes with an analysis of the risk involved with transportation of commercial Class 1 materials on the highway.

Blast-induced damage criterion based on the peak particle velocity has worked reasonably well for estimating building damage. However, the same criterion cannot be used to estimate damage to rock and mine structures such as shaft and tunnel walls. It does not take into account the nature of seismic radiation pattern in the near-field, which is very different than what is obtained at far-off distances. To investigate this phenomenon, a systematic study has been carried out involving single-hole blasts and normal production blasts, with explosive source ranging from nearly point source charges to standard borehole sizes (6-7 m long explosive column), with charge weight varying from 0.5 kg to 30 kg. In the near-field, it is shown that, both P-wave and S-wave take a dominant position compared to the mainly surface waves measured in the far-field. These are shown to depend strongly not only on the length of the explosive column but also the way it is initiated in the borehole (i.e. direct vs. reverse initiation in the borehole) with respect to the target location. The seismic radiation patterns were recorded by high-frequency triaxial accelerometer stations grouted in the rock mass. This study describes the nature of seismic radiation in the near-field from long and short charges, the role of initiation direction and their effect on frequency with respect to sensor locations or target area of interest, and their implication in prediction of blast-induced damage in the near field.

To meet salt production needs over the remaining life of the Cayuga Mine at Lansing, New York, the Salt Division of Cargill, Inc. decided to build a new underground screening plant. The new plant required a chamber 50 feet wide by 250 feet long and nearly 70 feet high. On advice of their mining contractor, Dynatec Mining Company, the company chose an ingenious excavation method similar to sublevel stoping. This method eliminated the need for an access ramp, reduced equipment needs and excavation time substantially.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. Blasting crews, explosive product drivers, drillers, blasters, supervisors, and salespeople all arrive daily at customer blast sites in vehicles of every type whether passenger cars, pickup trucks, or bulk trucks. The majority of these vehicles are company owned and re p re s e n t a substantial investment and risk for the company. That may explain why the costs resulting from blasting incidents is often surpassed by those involving motor vehicle accidents.

In every aspect of conduct, on the blast site or off, the issue of credibility is raised. Promises are made, commitments are satisfied, safe practices are obeyed, communication is maintained, and proven procedures followed. Only by fulfilling these objectives, are we deemed trustworthy and reliable - in other words - credible. Unfortunately, at times, we fall short of achieving our goals. Whether intentionally or accidentally, everything is not completed according to plan or accuracy. On the blast site, falling short of achieving such goals may contribute significantly to a chain of events that can potentially produce accidents. At the very least, a blaster’s credibility will be jeopardized. The fact remains that the blaster that continuously conducts business in a professional manner will less likely find him or herself as a defendant in future claims.
