Wadi Limestone Quarry is one of the largest captive mines of Associated Cement Companies Ltd, India. The mine management wanted to extend the excavation as close to the plant as possible for maximum exploitation of the deposit. The National Institute of Rock Mechanics and the management of Wadi Limestone Quarry carried out comprehensive investigations to evolve a methodology to control vibration and flyrock within safe limits.

The authors discuss the concepts, engineering considerations, and cost relationships involved in the use of drilling and blasting to accomplish backfilling and reclamation with minimum use of mechanical equipment. The four methods of reclamation now in use are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are noted. Guidelines for selecting a particular method are offered in terms of applicability under varying geologic, economic, and technological conditions.

Duvha Opencast is a large South African dragline operation supplying coal to the Duvha Power Station which is operated by Eskom, the state power utility. For Duvha to remain competitive with other collieries, it has proved necessary to continuously examine and investigate methods of reducing costs. With explosives representing a major portion of the total working costs, blasting is an obvious area of investigation.

The Du Pont "Detaline" nonelectric initiation system utilizes a low energy detonating cord. It is compatible with conventional detonating cords and shock tube downlines as well as nonelectric in-the-hole delay caps. "Detaline" millisecond surface and in-hole delays offer a great degree of flexibility in developing effective delay patterns for improved fragmentation and reduced vibration. All components are easily assembled in the field.

An experimental investigation on the trend of cratering induced by explosives placed on rock masses was carried out. By using various types of explosives and rocks having different geomechanical parameters, it was possible to evaluate the influence of the explosive-rock coupling. Furthermore, the importance of the parameters defining the rock and the explosive for the absorption of energy induced in the rock mass, is pointed out.

The Army Corps of Engineers completed the Charleroi Lock and Dam in 1932. It is located on the Monongahela river approximately 22 miles (35k) south of Pittsburgh in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. It is comprised of a 420-foot (128m) gated dam, and a 720-foot (219m) by 56-foot (17m) land side lock, which provides for a 16.6 foot (5m) vertical lift.

A cooperative effort between a blasting vibration consultant, a blasting contractor, and personnel from the City of Las Vegas has dramatically reduced complaints from residential areas near developmental blasting projects. The principal methods used involved the preparation of an informative video recording which presents various aspects of the blasting operations, the design of a distinctive flyer which is attached to residential doors, and pre-blast meetings for information dissemination.

The use of crater studies to evaluate explosive performance is a well-established practice in the Blasting Industry. Normally, this work utilizes larger charge sizes (>75mm) in order to minimize the influence of geological factors adjacent to the borehole. This can impose unwanted restrictions in the experimental factors accessible to investigation. Thus, for example, systematic studies of non-ideal performance in a somewhat practical setting is rendered quite difficult.

Both theory and experience tell us that spatially distributed energy sources generate a more complex family of seismic waves than do point sources. The resulting effects in the near field (for close-in blasting) are significantly different than those from point sources although, at great distances from the source, the seismic waves take on many of the characteristics of point sources and can often be treated as such.

This paper examines the aspects of differing types of blasting cuts in underground headings with consideration to the reduction of number of holes and costs. At least one comparison study is related where costs per advance meter were significantly improved. The technical aspect of the paper covers a study of the effects of various blasthole delay intervals on resulting crater volume, ground vibration, and fragmentation for six hole V-cuts.

This paper discusses problems encountered when blasting under rivers for pipeline crossings. Many pipelines have recently been laid under the Danube River. Great care had to be taken to determine limits of detonation impulses from blasting operations in order that no damage would occur to structures at the water's edge, boats, and swimmers. Equations were derived from the results of this study which enable prediction of impulse levels.

This paper describes a method of evaluating shot performance through the use of available mine- data. The mine had already been monitoring the following parameters for other purposes: drill penetration rates, shovel loading rates, crusher throughput, crusher power and crusher hangups. By assigning pit coordinates to these factors, maps showing the location of difficult and favorable blasting are as are identified. Products and techniques are compared by the same method.

The problem of blisters (bubbles) and occasional tears in caisson liners occurred when blasting and we have not found a conclusive cause nor a preventive solution. Sinkhole development in karst terrains is a serious problem and risk to facilities built in these areas. The potential for sinkholes are a function of many things including the chemistry of the underlying rock, the location of water conductive fractures and fissures in the rock, the natural fluctuation of the ground water table, vibrations from various sources and surface regrading activities. When sinkhole open near quarry operations the occurrence of these features is occasionally attributed to vibrations from quarry blasting. The purpose of this paper is to review the evidence regarding the development of sinkholes as a result of quarry blasting. In general, it has been found that sinkholes result from collapse or piping of overburden soils into cavities or caverns developed within underlying carbonate rocks that have been in existence for many thousands of years. The overburden soils in karst areas are typically clayey and as a result are not subject to densification or liquefaction as a result of vibrations. The primary cause of an increased rate of sinkhole development can be attributed to changes in the ground water table or local surface water drainage. These changes may be caused by seasonal fluctuations, ground water level lowering in drought periods, dewatering of excavations or quarries, or local changes in surface drainage resulting from grading activities.

As part of the redevelopment of the Royal Brisbane Hospital complex in Australia, a number of antiquated buildings were to be demolished and replaced by newer, modem facilities. Aside from the decommissioning of the hospital buildings, the project called for the removal of approximateIy 24,000 bank cubic metres (bcm) of varying quality rock material. Given the sensitivity of the project, in particular the close proximity of the required excavation to the existing hospital structures (-3 metres at the closest point), and the requirement that these were to remain lily operational during the construction phase, it was initially proposed to use hydraulic rock hammers as the primary means of excavation. Poor production rates and unexpected dif3icuIt rock conditions led to a revision of the excavation methods and a feasibility study on drill and blast practices was undertaken. Subsequent to an initial series of trial blasts to illustrate that vibration and flyrock could be adequately controlled, drill and blast methods were used in conjunction with mechanical methods of rock breakage. This paper reviews the drU and blast processes and the practices which were necessary to comply with the multiple constraints imposed on the project. The project has highlighted that modified drill and blast practices remain a cost-effective method of excavation, even in sensitive areas which are commonly deemed inappropriate for such methods.
