The paper notes that the extraction of 22% of the remaining workable reserves in the north western area involves a risk of spontaneous combustion higher than is normal in Britain. Mining systems have been tailor made in order to minimize the risk of spontaneous heatings, and these systems are described. Well-proved methods of combating spontaneous combustion are referred to, as well as the limitations which now apply to them as the result of the introduction of modern mining techniques. A substantial part of the paper is devoted to the circumstances in which spontaneous combustion occurs underground in the north western area. Several actual incidents which have occurred in the last few years, along with the practical application of the lessons learned, are described. Of particular note are: a) the procedure adopted in the north western area to equalize pressure differences across stoppings using pressure chambers, and b) a retreat mining system, primarily designed to deal with high methane emission and steep gradients, which also affords some protection against spontaneous combustion.

An attempt is made to summarise the mining law of England, Wales and Scotland. Attention is also drawn to the recent privatisation of the electric power and gas industries and the intention of the present Government to follow suit as regards coal mining. The subject of mining law is discussed under the headings: minerals or rights that have been nationalised or are vested in the Crown; ownership (of land and mineral rights); special customs; tracing of owners; right of support (arising from mining); ancillary rights and easements; obtaining prospecting and mining rights; planning permission; statutory aids to obtaining rights; notes on the history, law and practices of petroleum (onshore and offshore), gas, coal, prescribed substances, gold and silver; electricity; safety, health and welfare; and technical information and boreholes. A correction in the subsequent issue amends errors on p.A75 and A82 and regrets the publication of misinformation on the availability of grants

Australia has large reserves of pisolitic limonite. Mining recently commenced on the Yandicoogina deposit to produce a high-grade sintering ore. The ore contains about 10 wt% combined water and simulated sintering temperature profiles indicate that progressive dehydration of ore particles occurs in the temperature range 300-700 degrees C. Studies by optical microscopy show that although the dehyrdrated ore particles contain numerous cracks, there is no change in the microstructure of the ore because topotactic transformation to haematite results in the formation of compact masses of very fine-grained haematite microcrysts. When the ore is held at around 1 200 degrees C for 1 min significant recrystallisation of these microcrysts occurs, resulting in the formation of optically visible, micrometre sized haematite crystallites. Studies to simulate the behaviour of ore particles during sintering (as nuclear particles surrounded by a standard adhering fines mixture) show that the recrystallisation process occurs much earlier at temperatures of about 900 degrees C. Further studies indicate that CaO in the adhering fines mixture enhances the recrystallisation of the ore nuclei. The results of the investigation indicate that the pseudo-relict haematite in sinters produced from ore blends that contain significant levels of pisolitic limonite consists of dehydrated goethite that has undergone significant recrystallisation and grain growth, a phenomenon that is facilitated by the presence of lime derived from the sintering melt.

"The Koillismaa layered igneous complex is the result of igneous activity that occurred 2436±5 m.y. ago. Its crystallization took place in three separate but connected magma chambers, the total volume of which is estimated at more than 2000 km'. These chambers were located partly in a feeder system within Archaean granitoids and partly in an unconformity between these grani­ toids and Early Proterozoic supracrustal rocks. The composition of the parental magma that initially filled the chambers is thought to have been that of a relatively MgO-rich tholeiite. Sulphides and platinum-group minerals are mainly concentrated in the marginal series of the western part, where they are encountered over a distance of 25 km. This marginal series is an originally nearly horizontal series of rock types that displays a reversed differentiation trend, grading inwards from gabbroic to ultramafic rocks, followed bv rocks of the layered series. The chilled margin is not encountered anywhere in its original position at the contact, probably as a consequence of magmatic erosion, but remnants are to be found in the form of elongated xenoliths. Partly melted siliceous fragments from gneissic country rock typical of the lower part of the marginal series indicate pronounced contamination.Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite±pyrite are the predominant sulphides. The accessory sulphide minerals include covellite, violarite, marcasite, mackinawite, sphalerite and argentian pentlandite. Platinum-group minerals are represented by froodite, michenerite, merenskyite and sperrylite. Other accessories that have been identified are electrum and native copper and gold. The mean of the Cu/(Cu+Ni) ratio in the mineralizations is 0.67 and Pt/(Pt+Pd) 0.31.It is suggested that the sulphide phase was formed in the marginal series as the solubility of sulphur in the basic magma was lowered by contamination, possibly assisted by some other factors. The sulphur isotope data support the juvenile origin of the sulphur."

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. The paper describes the discovery, location and events concerning three types of heating which have occurred in recent years: a) in a district being salvaged, b) in the shaft pillar at an air-crossing, and c) in the gate side of a production district, all of which have occurred in the Beeston Seam at collieries in the deeper eastern part of the area. The paper describes the precautions, air sampling arrangements, training methods and codes of practice which have been adopted at collieries where spontaneous combustion is, or is likely to be, a hazard. The air samples taken from behind the stoppings following the sealing off of the salvaging district are examined and interpreted. The problem of effectively sealing off where more than two stoppings are required is made apparent. Other lessons have been learned as a result of these heatings and are described in the paper.

B.P.J. Stevens contributes a further response to the authors' earlier lengthy reply regarding their paper published in Trans.IMM B, vol.104, 1995, p.B1-B17, contending that despite the positive contribution clarifying their interpretations they perpetrate some misquotations, attempt to rewrite history and fail to understand the New South Wales Geological Survey's stratigraphic interpretation of the Broken Hill area. The paper's authors, in their further response, robustly defend their views, insisting that Stevens tends to misquote or take out of context what they have written and reiterating their findings that Zn is tectonically stacked above Pb at the north end of the orebody, that the written development of the stratigraphic interpretation is as they have stated, that shearing has attenuated or removed fold limbs in the Broken Hill block and that the 1:100 000 stratigraphic map reveals that magnetic anomalies are oblique to and truncated by the Geological Survey's interpreted stratigraphic boundaries

A study of the thermodynamic properties of magnesium chloride ammines was carried out with the ultimate objective that the thermal decomposition of the hexammine MgCl2.6NH3 may prove successful on a commercial scale for the manufacture of anhydrous magnesium chloride, which is required for the efficient electrolytic production of magnesium. The experimental data are presented in the form of an equilibrium diagram that aids the understanding of the conditions associated with the thermal decomposition of ammines

The compositions of olivine, pyroxene and chromite from the Proterozoic ultramafic complex are analagous to those of cumulate ultramafic rocks of tholeiitic origin, suggesting that the parent magma may have been tholeiitic rather than komatiitic. The complex contains economically significant Ni-Cu sulphide mineralisation. The high sulphide/silicate ratio is best explained in terms of the segregation of sulphides from a large volume of magma, of which all but the ultramafic cumulate fraction has since been eroded. Platinum-group minerals that have been identified include sperrylite, moncheite, native platinum, froodite, merenskyite, michenerite and Pd-rich pentlandite lamellae exsolved from pyrrhotite. They are characteristically found in close association with chalcopyrite, either along the contacts between hydrosilicate and sulphide grains or in cracks within pentlandite and chalcopyrite, which may also be intergrown with galena. Crystallisation from a Cu-rich residual magmatic liquid also enriched in Pt, Pd, As, Sb, Bi, Te, Zn and Pb is postulated.

Residual subsidence is generally accepted as being about 5% of the total subsidence occurring within 12 months of all mining finishing. This paper looks at five case studies from different parts of the country, in various mining settings within a depth range of 430m to 760m. From a single seam single panel working to working the eleventh seam, all are within the concealed coalfield, similar to today's mining. The monitoring of subsidence continued for many years once the mining had finished and the results obtained are at considerable variance from the accepted norm. Subsidence has been found to carry on for up to eleven years after mining has ended, within a range of 8% to 45% of total subsidence. A highly significant factor was that subsidence, as a whole, was generally much more than predicted. The residual subsidence aspect has to he viewed in this context and in order to debate the subject at length, the causes of residual subsidence have to be balanced against the apparent inability to accurately predict subsidence. The results from the case studies were similar, even though the mining settings differed considerably. Subsidence of around 10% to 20% continued for several years after mining had ceased.

Respect for mining in Botswana is long-standing. This article looks at Africa's most transparent mining regime and some of its ambitious plans. Botswana's mining industry value is forecast to average 5.2% growth from 2014-2018 with solid growth for the diamond sector and acceleration of coal production. Respect for the country's mining regime is maintained in the Fraser Institute 2014 annual survey where Botswana occupies the 26th position of 122 administrations. "Opening statements relating to the health and welfare of underground workers and the nature and prevention of silicosis and pneumokoniosis. During 1945-47, 10,500 UK coal-miners were certified by the Silicosis Medical Board to be suffering from pneumokoniosis and suspended from work in the industry. Over 80% of cases occurred in the South Wales coalfields. Silicosis and pneumokoniosis also occur among metalliferous miners, such as the tin-miners of Cornwall. The slate-quarries of North Wales are also troubled by these conditions as are the haematite mines of the North-West of England."

This paper describes the incipient heatings that occurred below ground in the High Main and Main seams at the mine between the years 1963 and 1966. The possible causes, effects and activities associated with such heatings are discussed in an attempt to establish the precautions necessary to minimize such occurrences. The assessment of as many "norms" as possible is made to enable the earliest detection and level of activity to be determined.

The slags produced in copper smelting are largely composed of silica and ferrous oxide and may therefore be regarded as essentially ferrous silicates. A fair amount of information is available on the constitutions of the liquid slags used in copper smelting and, in this connection, the large volume of work being carried out on steelmaking slags should be helpful. Constitutional diagrams are available for most of the principal systems involved (SiO2-FeO; SiO2-FeO-Al2O 3; SiO2-FeO-CaO; SiO2-FeO- MgO; and SiO2-FeO-CaO-Al2O3) and these show that additions of Al2O3 and CaO reduce the freezing points of SiO2-FeO slags but that additions of MgO increase the freezing point. A certain amount of information is available on the thermodynamics of slags, but much further work on this subject is required. Modern theories of the constitution of liquid slags deny the existence of molecular compounds but consider that liquid slags are mixtures of various ions such as, Fe2+. O2- and SiO4(4-). Little appears to be known of the reactions between matte and minor constituents dissolved in the slag
