"Phosphate ore is one of the most significant secondary resources for rare earth elements (REEs), and Florida phosphate is of particular interest due to its much higher ratio of heavy REEs, especially yttrium. Analyses of numerous samples from different phosphate processing streams in Florida showed that heavy REEs account for about 50% of the total REEs in Florida phosphate with yttrium accounting for approximately 30%. It was estimated that the amount of yttrium from US phosphate processing could meet the world demand for this critical element. This research aimed at recovering both REEs and phosphorus from a phosphate flotation tails. This tails is composed of mainly silica and phosphate with a small fraction of heavy minerals including monazite and xenotime. Since the specific gravity of silica is 2.6 versus 3.2 for phosphate and 4.5-5 for rare earth minerals, pre-concentration of the minerals of interest by gravity separation was investigated first. A pilot scale shaking table was used in this study. One pass gravity concentration achieved a shaking table concentrate analyzing over 600 ppm REEs at about 40% recovery. Flotation of the shaking table concentrate resulted in a product containing 1809 ppm REEs and 26.37% P2O5 with corresponding recoveries of 73% and 82%. Sulfuric acid leaching at 75oC could recover over 60% REE and nearly all the P2O5. Higher REEs (>90%) recovery was achieved by conducting leaching at higher temperature with concentrated sulfuric acid. The phosphoric acid from leaching of the flotation concentrate is of superior quality compared with that generated from regular phosphate rock.INTRODUCTION Rare earths are a group of 17 elements including those of the lanthanum series, as well as the non-lanthanides, yttrium and scandium. These elements have very specific critical uses in a multitude of markets. For example, lanthanum is used as a catalyst in breaking down crude oil to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and neodymium is the core magnetic component in high-strength magnets for electric car batteries, wind turbines and hard disk drives. Rare earths are also essential for many military applications. Many of these applications have no substitute materials and the move to green technologies has dramatically increased their demand."

Improving reaction effectiveness of asbestos tailings and acid is main means to increase the productivity of magnesium hydroxide and amorphous silica and to reduce production costs. In this paper, the process optimization of acid-leaching reaction process of asbestos tailings is reported. Through the orthogonal experiments of four influence factors, such as acid consumption, reaction temperature, reaction time and initial acid concentration in the leaching reaction. The experiment results indicated that the optimal process parameters were as follows: reaction temperature was 95?, reaction time was 1.5h, acid consumption was 218.9g hydrochloric acid(37%) per 100g asbestos tailings and initial acid concentration was about 25%. The influence significance sequence of the four factors was as follows: reaction temperature > reaction time > mass concentration of hydrochloric acid > hydrochloric acid consumption. Under the optimum process conditions, the leaching rate of MgO was 97.3%, total iron 98.15% and Al2O3 57.9%.

"Lead is the most important material able to meet the current demand for energy storage. The lead acid battery is reliable, efficient and inexpensive. Continuous developments in battery construction are providing improvements in all aspects of the batteries’ performance. The lead acid battery is both the main lead product and the main raw material for lead production. More than half of the lead produced is from secondary smelters where batteries are the most important feed material. The environmental pressure on lead production has been increasing for many years, and continues to become stronger and stronger. The lead production processes and technologies themselves will require updating to meet the new regulations. Although they are very strict now, they will become even more so and current technologies may not be sufficient. Because recyclability is a strong point for the lead acid battery, the secondary smelters need to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. In recent years, the secondary smelters underwent impressive changes in this direction, but some more improvements are possible. Electrochemistry can offer a step change improvement in making secondary lead production more environmentally friendly. Engitec has developed an electrochemical process base on a very high current density (high productivity) cell using an inexpensive electrolyte and at a relatively low cost. In this paper, the latest update on the technology is provided. INTRODUCTION The lead acid battery is considered the “walking dead” by some new technologies trying to replace it. It has played and will continue to play a very important role in our lives because it is inexpensive, fully recyclable and the existing lead and the mine reserves guaranty enough material for the extended future. According to the life cycle, the lead acid battery is the cheapest and the most effective system to store energy. Lead is practically a close loop where lead battery production consumes more than 80 % of the produced lead but contemporarily it is the most important raw material for the production of metallic lead. In fact, nowadays, the secondary production has overcome primary production and this trend is expected to continue. Primary lead is the make-up material for the existing battery production and the source of lead for the construction of the new ones."

It has been fairly well established by many experiments that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T. ferrooxidans), also named Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans(Kelly and Wood, 2000),can depress the floatability of pyrite. However, the mechanisms governing the process have not been known completely. In the present investigation, wettability and electrokinetic studies were carried out to examine the surface chemical changes on pyrite before and after interaction with T. ferrooxidans or its secretions. Attachment of T. ferrooxidans to pyrite was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The results of experiments showed that, under certain conditions, T. ferrooxidans and its secretions would obviously change the surface electricity of pyrite and result in the iso-electric point of pyrite shifting notably. However, the surface wettability of pyrite hardly changed and its hydrophobicity increased little after interaction with T. ferrooxidans and its secretions. Based on the results of the present investigation it can be reasoned that the depression of floatability of pyrite is due to the reduction of surface free energy, rather than the increase of surface hydrophilicity of pyrite. The decrease of surface free energy weakens the attachment of collector to pyrite; during the process bacterial protein plays the most important role and the bacterial chemotaxis strengthens the effect.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. As an air bubble approaches a mineral surface, a thin liquid film (TLF) is formed in between. The excess pressure (p) in the film determines the kinetics of drainage, which is of critical importance in flotation. We have developed a new method of monitoring the kinetics for both stable and unstable wetting films and analyzed the results using the Reynolds lubrication theory. It has been found that initially a TLF is thinned by the Laplace pressure (pcur) due to changes in bubble curvature and subsequently by the disjoining pressure (?) created by the surface forces present in a wetting film. In the present work, we have derived an analytical expression for determining ? from the temporal and spatial profiles of TLFs on mineral surfaces. The results show that ? > 0 in a film formed on a hydrophilic surface and ? < 0 in a film formed on a surface hydrophobized by collector. Thus, the role of collector in flotation is to create a hydrophobic force and hence a negative disjoining present in wetting films. It is also found that smaller bubbles can create higher Laplace pressure, which helps the TLF drain faster.

The paper elaborates on the significance of producing ultra-low-moisture ore concentrate, the operating principle and technical features of thermocompression- filtration process, the kinetics involved in the dewatering process, and the technological process system and equipment used. It is pointed out that it is possible to reduce the moisture of fine ore concentrate to a minimum. By way of example, the case of the treatment of flotation molybdenum (Mo) using the thermocompression- filtration process is cited.

Reverse flotation process tests were conducted for marine sedimentary silicon-calcium phosphate ore in this research. The research findings showed that by adding antifoamer, a concentrate with P2O5 32.36%, SiO2 10.69%, MgO 0.67% was obtained, with recovery of P2O5 being 88.12%. Such is a satisfying result, when compared with the original mineralogical component of P2O5 26.64%, SiO2 11.51% and MgO 3.36%. When using antifoamer, the SiO2 grade of the concentrate increased 0.55%, the MgO grade decreased 0.64%, while P2O5 recovery increased 2.69% compared by adding no antifoamer. Adding antifoamer is favorable to increase the grade and recovery of P2O5. Therefore, antifoamer is necessary. Tests of synergistic reaction of antifomer indicate that the appropriate consumption of the antifoamer is 275g/t CY and 1Kg/t TWF. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the breakage characteristics of pyrophyllite in a laboratory ball mill. In grinding tests, the breakage characteristics were analyzed using the mathematical kinetic models based on the two breakage functions; the specific rate of breakage and the primary breakage distribution. Two samples having similar chemical composition show identical values in specific rate of breakage. In comparison, there are different values of primary breakage distribution for each sample. The size distributions of the product with various grinding time are well described by the parameters from non-linear searching.

The recycling schemes of copper mineral to a copper raw ore produced in China is investigated in this paper, of which is aimed at copper concentrate‘s grade is over 26.00% and recovery is over 90.00%. The primary copper mineral the raw ore is chalcopyrite and the main gangue minerals are quartz, orthoclase, albite, clinochlore and phlogopite. There are four useful metal elements contained in the copper raw ore, which are Cu, Pb, Zn, Au and Ag, and the grade of each is 3.75%, 0.01%, 0.11%, 0.31 and 483.5 g/t. Two floating recycling schemes and its corresponding flotation reagent system were determined. The results show that calcium oxide, sodium carbonate and sodium sulphide were used as regulators, sodium n-butylxanthate was used as collector and terpenic oil was used as frother in two floating recycling schemes are effective. The open-circuit test’s results show that the copper mineral contained in raw ore can be effective collected, and both concentrates gotten through two schemes are up to grade.

"The particle size distribution characteristics of ground product can influence the quality of the classification overflow and the next beneficiation indexes in an ore concentrator. Usually, the size distribution of ground product is considered to be determined by that of new ball mill feed. However, based on large amounts of data from industrial grinding circuit surveys, this paper has clearly shown that the size distribution of ground product should be determined by the size characteristics from classification underflow unless the circulating load was small, because the new feed is an important component and occupy a dominant position of mixed ore from belt feed and classification underflow. On the other hand, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification underflow can be more than 0.99 when the relevance principle and its method are used. Meanwhile, their P80 value also keeps a synchronous correlation. The greater the capacity of classification underflow is, the higher the correlation of size distribution between the ground product and the mixed feed is. Furthermore, the correlation coefficient of the size distribution between ground product and classification overflow which is from primary or secondary can be 0.96. It is another discovery that the correlation coefficient is related to the type of classifier. The coefficient of size distribution of overflow and underflow from hydrocyclone is superior to that of spiral classifier, which can explain the reason why the hydrocyclone is widely used to replace the spiral classifier in concentrator.INTRODUCTION It is well knows that ball mill circuits closed with cyclones or spiral classifier such as a primary grinding circuit, a secondary grinding circuit and SAB mill have become an industry standard. Which grinding process employed will be determined by the P80 value of ground products. When the primary closed circuit ball mill or SAB that it is different throughout between the two processes was employed, a grinding fineness with -200mesh under 68% will be available. However, the secondary grinding circuit with the fineness of -200mesh above 80% can be conducted. Of course, the grinding fineness is determined by the grain size characteristics of the mineral."

Next generation flotation agents of KSK series for the concentration of complex copper-lead ores and the new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena are introduced in this work. The feature of the KSK flotation agents is that they exhibit both frother and collector properties. KSK-6 can successfully substitute the widely used in Kazakhstani industry reagent ?-80 at the reduced consumption of butyl xanthate by 30 %. The new ferromagnetic nanosized depressor of galena, besides a low consumption rate of 100 g/t, also makes possible to exclude sodium sulfite (3-4 kg/t) and ferrous sulfate (5-6 kg/t) from the separation process, and receive high metal grade concentrates. The coking coal or clean coal from raw material division, Tata Steel Ltd. is a prime source of energy for inhouse steel making. Coal reserves of semi soft coking coal at West Bokaro is beneficiated by dense media cyclone and froth flotation processes to produce clean coal. In dense media cyclone process two byproducts-middling and rejects are also produced along with clean coal. With the growing demand for clean coal, it becomes imperative to maximize the recovery of clean coal in beneficiation processes. This will help, not only in reduction in cost of production, but also in raw resource conservation, and proper utilization. In this context, a case study was conducted at West Bokaro to identify opportunities for clean coal recovery from by-products. This paper mainly discusses the process for recovery of clean coal from byproducts and study of further liberation of clean coal from byproducts for economic consideration.

If lead-zinc ores have high oxidation rate, separation of lead and zinc is very difficult. This paper studied the technology of preferential flotation by the coarse grinding and re-grinding. The lead concentrate grade is 51.40% and the lead recovery is 62.83% when feed grades Pb 1.74% and Zn 6.46% with oxidation rate being 13.75%. At same time, the zinc concentrate grade is 50.07% and its recovery is 90.01%.

Beneficiation and dephosphorization of refractory oolitic hematite ore are investigated in this paper. It is shown that single magnetic separation, gravity separation or flotation is unable to recover iron effectively from the ore due to the complex mineralogy. The joint separation by spiral chute-shaking table shows a prospect for the treatment of the ore. An iron concentrate with 58.67% iron grade and 51.93% recovery is obtained by the joint separation of spiral chute and shaking table under the fineness of ?0.074mm 90% and dispersant dosage of 2kg/t for a sample ore of 37.51% Fe and 0.88% P. However, P content in the concentrate is still up to 0.52%. Dephosphorization from the concentrate is hence carried out. The final iron concentrate assaying 59.26% Fe and 0.056% P is obtained when the concentrate obtained by joint separation is leached by sulfuric acid of 1% (mass fraction) with solid percentage 10% at room temperature for 10min.

A new optical sorting system based on a complex image analysis and high definition imaging has been developed by Comex. The image analysis is based on high definition cameras of different types and advanced filtration tools for verification of waste particles. Different mineral properties are used to identify the processed material. The system is further combined with a high speed rejection mechanism based on FPGA technology and operating in real time conditions. This provides a minimal error when removing waste particles from the sorted material.

Oxiana Sepon?s mineral processing facility in south central Laos produces copper cathode using leach-autoclave-SX/EW flotation technology. Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid for the leach circuit. However, low pyrite recovery has been an ongoing challenge in the flotation circuit. Tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute showed that the pyrite losses to the tail are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines. In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-Oxiana technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt, and was un-available for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the Sepon low pH, high dissolved metal ion environment, and will not complex with ferric, ferrous, or copper in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which then was followed by on plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.

"The flotation separation of sulphides bulk concentrate containing Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi, which was obtained by both table-flotation of gross sand of gravity separation of wolframite and bulk flotation of wolframite slimes using butyl xanthate and oil No. 2, etc., has been conducted by using the cyanide process in the tungsten concentrator. The process has problems of high reagents consumption (25 tonne of cyanide dosage per year) and mineral processing cost (800~1000 RMB reagents cost per tonne of by-product concentrates), high mutual containing loss in the by-product concentrates and serious environmental pollution caused by lots of cyanide-containing wastewater. In order to solve this problem, a new cyanide-free separation technology is studied, which is used to process this sulphides bulk concentrate with 8.68% Cu, 8.98% Zn, 0.26% Mo, 1.58% Bi and 40.12% S. The results of the closed circuit test show that Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi can effectively be separated from this sulphide minerals concentrate by using the reasonable flotation-gravity flowsheet, high-efficiency collectors and regulators simultaneously. The metallurgical recovery and concentrate grade are as follows: molybdenum recovery is 94.63% with 50.62% Mo content; copper recovery is 85.18% with 29.29% Cu content; zinc recovery is 75.92% with 46.49% Zn content; total Bi recovery is 65.08% with 16.86% Bi content. The new technology is an alternative to the cyanide process due to its low cost for reagents, satisfying separation results and economic profits, and solves the problem of environmental pollution caused by the use of large quantities of cyanide. Some important parameters in separating the Cu-Zn-Mo-Bi sulphides concentrate are also introduced in this paper. This study provides pretty good technical support for separating the polymetallic sulphide ores containing Cu, Zn, Mo and Bi by cyanide-free technique."

This contribution deals with the mineral processing of Li-silicate greisen-type ores comprising of quartz, topaz and zinnwaldite (lithium-rich mica). The origin of the greisen-type ores processed is the Ore Mountains(Germany) where it is explored as a potential resource for the production of lithium carbonate. The goal is to develop a process chain for the enrichment of zinnwaldite using dry techniques only. As basis for the investigation the process chain, which historically was used to process the greisen focused on cassiterite and wolframite, is taken and modified towards the zinnwaldite. Starting with crushed material with particle sizes smaller than 35 millimeters, investigations on different approaches to grinding to liberate mica from gangue are carried out. Concentrates of zinnwaldite are then produced by magnetic separation of size fractions. To assess the success of grinding, classification and separation, mineral liberation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy are used. The amount of lithium measured in the sample with atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to calculate the content of zinnwaldite based on its known mineral chemistry. Combined with the particle size distributions, product qualities are determined. Altogether, this allows the thorough evaluation of the success of comminution with focus on following steps of concentration. A moderately thermophilic acidophiles strain had been isolated from the bio-heap leaching plant in Zijinshan Copper Mine, and the identification based on the PCR-16S rRNA gene sequence homology analysis with morphologic and physiologic methods was conducted by polyphasic taxono-my and phylogeny research. The results show that the strain by depurated belongs to Acidthiobacillus genus and is considered as Acidthiobacillus albertensis.
