The recovery of water for re-use in minerals processing is an important issue in the reduction of water use in mining, as is the dewatering of tailings to reduce the propensity of ?wet? tailings dams. It is common in these dewatering operations to use thickeners whereby polymeric flocculants are combined with the dilute feed to the thickener to aid sedimentation and the subsequent consolidation of particulate materials. Thickeners are the workhorses of water recovery and tailings dewatering and although the basics are well understood, there is still no ability to reliably predict the throughput and underflow density from a thickener based on traditional sedimentation tests and flux analysis. The reasons for the discrepancy between full-scale operations and predictions based on laboratory tests are numerous, including difficulties in mimicking the flocculation conditions experienced in the field and the shear conditions in the thickener. The latter effects are little understood and hard to quantify and include effects due to flocculated aggregate densification, complimentary shear and compressional effects and aggregate break-up. Developing a set of test protocols to quantify the effects of densification, shear in compression effects and aggregate breakup and the subsequent contributions of each to compressional dewatering in a thickening environment has been completed for a simple model polymer flocculated particulate suspension. The data and analysis shows that aggregate densification is a dominant contributor to the difference between observed and predicted behavior based on laboratory tests. A major consideration in the analysis is the fact that common thickener operations are permeability limited and although the various effects are all important, the one that results in the fastest water release is dominant. Of interest also are the shear rate, concentration, and time dependence of the aggregate densification process. A basic model of the process has been developed along with network yielding tests conducted using rheometry. Gangue minerals can often have severe adverse effects on selective value mineral separation. Such effects can be mediated through a variety of pathways or mechanisms. One popular mechanism is that of ?slime coating? or heterocoagulation, wherein the gangue mineral fines are believed to coat the value mineral surfaces and thereby reduce selectivity and floatability. Another pathway that has received relatively little attention is that mediated through the effect of gangue minerals on pulp rheology, and consequently selective separation. Our recent work in developing a scientific understanding of these effects has highlighted the prevalence and importance of this pathway. In this study, the impact of shape and morphology of serpentine gangue minerals on suspension rheology and selective Ni flotation from ultramafic ores was investigated. We found strong evidence for micro- and macro-network formation in the presence of acicular (needle-shaped) or fibrous minerals, which impacted pulp rheological properties. Results also supported the hypothesis that morphology has a greater role to play than mere shape. The size of the network ranged from 5 microns to 2 cm depending upon the amount and aspect ratio of fibrous minerals. These networks impede many flotation sub-processes, such as gas dispersion and bubble-particle interactions. Additionally, the small pore size of the networks prevents bubble penetration leading to a large transport of the gangue minerals to the concentrate via lifting of the entire network by bubble flux, which resulted in a significant grade dilution. Based on the scientific insights generated in this study various techniques have been developed to improve selective value mineral separation. One of the efficient means of ore disintegration during the processing is its volume breakage in such machines as roller-presses. Up to date neither the ore disintegration mechanism in roller-presses nor the reasons of their high efficiency are thoroughly investigated. In this work, the mathematical model of Finite Element Method of bad material disintegration in roller-press is discussed. The mechanism of the interparticle ore disintegration is traced.

Dolomite is a mineral, which consists of CaCO3 and MgCO3. In this work, a series of experiments were carried out in order to adsorb boron from a boron-containing solution using a calcinated dolomite sample, and then to desorb it from the loaded adsorbent. A particular modification on the surface of dolomite was observed when it was thermally treated at certain temperature, ranging from 750 oC to 1050 oC; in turn, it is the specific surface was increased. In other words, the experimental results suggested that the calcinated dolomite exhibited a high adsorption capacity for boron, indicating its effectiveness in effectively adsorbing boron from drinking water or wastewater.

Dielectrophoresis is a separation technique that uses a non-uniform electrical field to separate particles on the basis of their permittivity. There are many areas of mineral processing that might benefit from the application of dielectrophoresis. These include: coarse removal of gangue, recovery of ultrafine particles, upgrading of flotation concentrates or simply as a laboratory analysis technique. In order to determine the potential value of dielectrophoresis to the mineral processing industry, the response of composite particles was investigated. The electrical properties of composites involve complex relationships between the shape, distribution and permittivity of the individual grains within the rock. The relationship between mineral composition and dielectrophoretic force was measured on single particles from two ore types. The results were used to populate a model that could predict the separation characteristics of the ore. The insights gained from this model separator allowed potential applications of the technology to be examined and their performance evaluated.

The multiphase reactive flow in process equipments, e.g., fluidized beds, involves complex coupling among flow, heat/mass transfer and reaction kinetics over scales ranging from molecules, sub-particle eddies up to equipments. Conventional two-fluid model (TFM) ignores the effects of meso-scale structures, and hence is not suitable for describing the intrinsically multi-scale heterogeneity within multiphase systems. To be consistent with the meso-scale structures, we proposed a structure-dependent multi-fluid model (SFM), and closed its drag force by invoking the stability condition defined in the energy-minimization multi-scale (EMMS) model. The SFM reduces to the conventional TFM if homogeneous distribution is assumed within each grid, and reverts to the original EMMS model if it is used to describe steady state, global behavior of a fluidized bed. The multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is characterized by coupling of TFM and EMMS drag coefficient, can then be viewed as a simplified solution of the SFM. We demonstrate that the SFM significantly improves the accuracy and at the same time enables higher efficiency by allowing for much coarser grid used than in TFM. Recent application of it in 3D, full-loop, transient simulation of industrial processes, e.g., fluid catalytic cracking, coal combustion, gasification, kaolinite clay calcinations, shows its advantages in helping design and troubleshoot multiphase process equipments. A high-grade fluorite ore is converted into hydrogen fluoride to produce many kinds of materials containing fluorine. Recently, it is becoming necessary to use low-grade fluorite ore due to the depletion of high grade ore. The low-grade fluorites usually have impurities such as SiO2, P, CaCO3 and arsenic. The most impurities such as SiO2, CaCO3 and P can be removed by using flotation method. However, the removal of arsenic is difficult, and the arsenic contamination decreases the hydrogen fluoride production percentage. The novel technologies for processing low-grade fluorite ore are urgently needed, in order to lower the arsenic concentration to less than 100 mg/kg. In this study, the removal of arsenic from low-grade fluorite ore has been investigated by means of an autogenous grinding using tower mill in sulfuric acid aqueous solution and 0.3 mm zirconia balls in water. The nano grinding in water can prevent the dissolution of 0.3 mm size zirconia balls as grinding media by sulfuric acid solution. Experimental results showed that the arsenic concentration was reduced from 260 mg/kg to 90 mg/kg and CaF2 recovery reached 90% by this process.

"Functional performance analysis of closed circuit grinding provides valuable insight into the two components of ball mill circuit grinding efficiency: classification system efficiency and mill grinding efficiency. Classification system efficiency isolates the combined effect of classifier performance and circulating load ratio from other circuit variables, such as ore grindability and the mill grinding environment. Optimization of classification system efficiency ensures grinding energy is applied to particles needing further size reduction and not to overgrinding. Entirely based on size distribution data, classification system efficiency precisely distinguishes subtle changes in classification system performance. Use of the functional performance equation to isolate mill grinding efficiency allows for proper optimization of the mill grinding environment by isolating confounding effects of changes in classification and ore grindability. Variables such as mill percent solids and grinding media selection can be optimized using the mill grinding efficiency subcomponent of functional performance. First published by McIvor in 1988, the functional performance equation provides a set of standardized, quantitative optimization criteria, simple and powerful, which link circuit performance to plant design and operating variables that can be manipulated. Functional performance optimization has been applied in numerous mineral processing plants globally and continues to gain acceptance as a practical means for grinding circuit optimization. In this paper, examples of derivation and industrial application demonstrate the means by which functional performance analysis dissects grinding circuit efficiency into its subcomponents allowing the reader to apply this straightforward, powerful optimization methodology at their mineral processing operation."

This study is concerned with the behavior of bubble clusters in a well-controlled turbulent flow. We used a specially designed cell where the bubble aggregates could be formed and exposed to breakage by a rotating impeller. The effects of impeller speed and the concentration of collector on cluster behavior were studied. It was found that the size of the clusters increases with the concentration of collector used. We also found that although the clusters could easily be destroyed under the action of impeller, they could reform, especially at lower impeller speeds. It was observed that the size of the bubbles arriving into the impeller region in the absence of particles before breakage was considerably higher than the size of the clusters formed at the same impeller speed. It appears that both cluster breakage and re-formation take place simultaneously, and the extent of formation and regrowth is mainly determined by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the impeller speed.

"Revealed and analyzed in the study are the ways of significant perfection of specific characteristics of the equipment, such as use of high-frequency voltage transformation to create a charger; use of pulse transformers, with core made of materials with high magnetic permeability, in pulse generating circuits; as well as use of special ways to produce voltage pulses with a short front. The experiments have proved the possibility to adapt these technological solutions for electric-pulse installations, and suggested on this base is a strategy of further development and application of electric-pulse technologies. The different applications joint work schemes of voltage sources with two levels voltage and energy in electric pulse technologies are investigated. The possibility of increasing energy efficiency of destruction is shown."

The purpose of this work is to present ?state of the art? mass balances closing strategies in ore treatment plants. It presents a brief history of difficulties and challenges ahead. The current methodology is based on usage of an expert system, which seizes and filters the plant data, analyzes situations of equipment stops and mostly instruments failures. It is still possible to internally create a strategy to check the data of an instrument failure. The system is coupled to software with a Lagrangian model of mass balance closure that receives the pre-treated data. Thus, the data goes through filtering and reconciling processes to generate a reliable mass balance of the ore treatment plant. This made possible to obtain a system that is able to tell the real productivity of a ore plant through reliable mass balances. Residence times on equipments are critical to the balance, thus, they require good logic to eliminate errors due to the characteristics of non-steady state. Among the next challenges is the inclusion of a ?soft sensor? as a replacement of an instrument required for mass balance closure.

Investigations over the application of hybrid comminution circuits with the High-Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), on the main comminution stage on the basis of the lime and cement industry, were presented in the paper. Two crushing circuits were investigated, the first HPGR-based and the other one, with conventional jaw crusher. The results presented in the article confirm that hybrid comminution circuits with the application of HPGR are innovative ones, and they assure achieving the technological and economic competitiveness in the mineral raw materials processing industry. They are much more favorable in terms of the final product fineness and capacity but insignificantly less effective about the unit energy consumption. Technological performance of conventional crushing circuit and HPGR-based one were also compared in lab scale. The circuit with HPGR application gives finer products both on crushing and grinding stages. The average particle size reduction obtained in HPGR-based circuit is as much as twice greater, comparing to the conventional crushing devices. Keywords: comminution, HPGR technology

The results of mineralogical?technological studies of PGM mineralization in zoned mafic?ultramafic complexes of the Ural?Alaskan type are given. The most important technological specificity of PGM mineralization hosted in dunites is its occurrence only in the form of free mineral species with predominance of Fe?Pt alloys (ferrous platinum, isoferroplatinum, and tetraferroplatinum). Technological properties, grain size, and good opening of PGM ore in grain size class +80 µm make it possible to concentrate ore using gravity methods with stadial comminution and between cycle separation of relatively large grains and nuggets into high-grade concentrates at the early stage of disintegration. Laboratory and pilot-plant testing using a sample of gold-bearing semi-oxidized ore from a Russian deposit followed by a flow sheet and reagent flotation mode development to design a plant was carried out in IRGIREDMET in 2009-2010. According to the developed flow sheet low alkaline flotation conditions are recommended in order to activate the surface of sulfides. The pH lowering from natural (7.5-8.0) to optimal (4.6-4.8) value using sulfuric acid provides for an increase in gold recovery. Before CIL, a final flotation concentrate is pretreated using pressure oxidation. It was found that the use of recycled solutions from pressure liberation in order to create acidic conditions for flotation instead of sulfuric acid during pilot-plant testing is recommended. The flow sheet offers the detoxification of remaining pressure oxidation solutions together with the flotation tailings. The carbonates presented in the tailings significantly reduce the consumption of lime for detoxification and allows for the use of two tailings dams instead of three. The first is used for the tailings of flotation and pressure oxidation recycled solutions, which were detoxified together. The second tailings dam is used for detoxified cyanidation cakes of the flotation concentrate. It was found during pilot-plant testing that flotation under natural and acidic conditions provides for 88.9 percent and 93 percent gold recovery, respectively. 4.1Au percent increase recovery was achieved due to the reduction of gold losses with flotation tailings and better quality of concentrates.

Bauxite is the principal source for the production of aluminum metal which has gained tremendous importance over the years due to its versatility as a metal capable of substituting almost all of the non-ferrous metals, non metals like wood, plastics, fibre glass, etc. and even steel in many applications. 90% of the high purity alumina needed for the production of this wonder metal in the world comes from bauxite. Even though alternate methods have been developed to produce alumina from non bauxite sources, owing to the high capital and operating costs involved, Bayer process still retains the superiority among all the methods by virtue of its simplicity and favourable economics. Bauxite continues to be the perfect ore for alumina production and its remarkable utilization makes it the most important non-ferrous ore. Most of the Alumina Refineries in the world process different types of bauxite and that too from varied sources. The technology employed in the Alumina Refineries depends on the Bauxite processed, with an ultimate view to produce alumina of required quality in the most efficient manner. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) had from time to time put forward bauxite specifications for metallurgical and other applications. However, these are found no fully based on alumina technology, present developments and availability of different types of bauxite in the country. The aim of this paper is to provide scheme of metallurgical grading of Indian Bauxite based on the background of alumina processing technologies and availability of various types of bauxite in the country. Efforts are made here to evaluate beneficiation techniques for central Indian Bauxite from the point of view of alumina production. In the recent past, a paradigm shift in terms of resource utilization and beneficiation practices is experienced by the Indian mining and mineral sector. Depleting iron ore reserves coupled with increasing demand for low-alumina iron ore fines to improve blast furnace performance in terms of productivity and reduced slag rate necessitate intensive beneficiation of iron ore. The task is even difficult for Indian iron ores, which are generally high in iron content and at the same time characterized by aluminous gangue. In 2006, M/s Tata Steel commissioned a state-of-the-art Jigging Plant (Batac Jig) at Noamundi Iron Mine (NIM), mainly to reduce alumina in iron ore fines. The jigging plant is incorporated in the existing beneficiation circuit to treat ?10+0.5mm size fraction of classifier fines. Over the course of plant stabilization while the plant could deliver desired ore upgradation and average product alumina, variability in terms of alumina content has been a concern. This paper discusses a case study of process parameters optimization in jigging operation to achieve consistent product quality while improving the effectiveness of gravity concentration for the beneficiation of Noamundi iron ore also to take care of inferior plant feed (input) grade year on year. The operating variables used to optimize jigging operations include bed height, pulsion and suction time, particle size, strokes, and plant throughput rate.

Based on lab and pilot-plant tests to recover gold, silver and lead of a Russian deposit, a collective and flotation concentration flow sheet with lead and sulfide concentrates was proposed. The type of the deposit is gold-sulfide-quartz-bearing. The recovery of gold, silver, and lead to a lead concentrate was 47.4%, 68.1% and 70.7%, respectively. The grade of gold and silver grade was 170 g/t and 372 g/t, respectively. The mass percent of lead, zinc and arsenic mass percent was 41.7%, 0.34% and 0.63%, respectively. The recovery of gold and silver recovery to a sulfide concentrate was 50.1% and 28.8% at the grade of gold 20.5 g/t and silver 66.2 g/t. Sulfide concentrate with arsenic mass percent ~3% was biooxidised followed by CIL and obtaining metal at the site as well as zinc concentrate from bioleaching solutions with zinc mass percent 45% at its 64% recovery. The total gold and silver recovery using a developed technology with the account of their treatment at a polymetallic plant was 92.2% and 93.7%, respectively.

Axis House manufactures and supplies alkylhydroxamate reagent of various carbon chain lengths for application in flotation of oxide copper and other minerals. As part of reagent performance improvement the structural factors of hydroxamate are examined by various analytical tools in particular with X-ray diffraction of single crystals. In a recent publication, the structure of n-octylhydroxamic acid and its corresponding potassium salt are presented with findings of hydroxamic functional group geometric preference, H-bonding, keto-enol tautomerisation, acid-salt aggregation and alignment of carbon chain. In this paper an example of branched alkylhydroxamate 3, 5, 5-trimethylhexylhydroxamate will be presented and compared with the result of linear alkylhydroxamate.

India hosts a wide range of globally significant mineral resources, including four fuel minerals; 11 metallic minerals; 22 minor minerals and 52 non-metallic minerals. The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country's landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.
