"This study investigates the effect of energy/power input on the flotation of a platinum ore in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell. Oscillating grids generate near ideal hydrodynamic environments, characterised by turbulence which is relatively homogeneous and isotropic. Secondary rougher feed and primary cleaner tail streams were floated in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell at power inputs from 0 to 2.5 W/kg, using 0.50 and 1.50 mm bubbles. From this study one may conclude that the effect of energy/power input on the flotation rate is strongly dependent on the particle and bubble size. Flotation rates generally increase with increasing particle size and decreasing bubble size. Increasing energy input generally leads to an increase in the flotation rate for finer particles and an optimum flotation rate for intermediate & coarse particles. Optimum conditions for intermediate/coarse platinum ore particles are using small bubbles at low energy inputs, or large bubbles at higher energy inputs. These results suggest that higher energy inputs are generally beneficial for the flotation of platinum ores as these consist predominantly of finer particles (-75 µm) and most industrial flotation applications operate with larger bubbles (1.0-2.0 mm).INTRODUCTIONThere is a considerable body of experimental and theoretical evidence to suggest that energy/power input plays an important role in flotation kinetics, particularly in the finer particle sizes where flotation efficiency is poor (Deglon, 2005). A number of excellent studies into the effect of energy on flotation kinetics have been carried out in impeller stirred cells (Ahmed and Jameson, 1985; Deglon, 2002; Pyke et al., 2003; Newell and Grano, 2006). Investigations using this type of cell have a number of limitations. The impeller influences particle suspension, bubble break-up and agitation in the cell. In addition, turbulence is highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic, with power intensities near the impeller orders of magnitude higher than those found elsewhere in the cell (Deglon, 1998; Koh and Schwarz, 2003; Schubert, 1999, 2008). These limitations have resulted in the development of novel cells for the investigation of energy input."

"Fractures induced by folds are pivotal in hydrocarbon exploration, ground water transport and harnessing of geothermal energy. This is because of the need to predict and understand fracture propagation in reservoirs which have folded rock formations. Despite its prominence, there is a lack of reliable numerical models for simulating fractures resulting from rock folding. This is partially due to the difficulty involved in fracture modelling. As a contribution to fold-fracture modelling, this work applies a coupled plasticity-damage model to rock fracturing and anticlinal folds. Parametric studies on a single folded layer give insight into the fold formation and behaviour. The anisotropic continuum damage model which considers both tension and compression is formulated using the power damage evolution law. For ease in formulation, strain equivalence hypothesis is adopted whereby the strain is the same for both damaged and undamaged configurations. Lubliner plasticity yield criterion is adopted for plastic deformation. The model is coded in Abaqus user subroutine UMAT and is applicable to quasi-brittle materials.INTRODUCTIONThe understanding of fractures in the earth’s crust helps in the prediction, evaluation and characterization of fractured reservoirs, whether they are petroleum, geothermal or underground water reservoirs. This is partly because reservoir permeability and stability are dependent on fracture properties (Nelson, 2001). To achieve this, various approaches have been developed to analyze reservoir rock fractures. These could be grouped into (a) discrete approaches – where the rock mass is represented by a finite number of well-defined components and (b) continuum approaches – where the mathematical assumption of an infinitesimal element is made (Jing, 2003). Ivanova (Ivanova, 1998) comprehensively studied fracture systems in nature and highlighted folds as one of the major geologic settings that produce fractures. Naturally occurring folds in reservoirs sometimes compound fracture analysis. It might not be clear whether the fractures formed before, during or after rock folding. Fractures formed during the folding process are expected to show stress orientations related to folding and are thus of primary concern in rock folding simulation. The Barlow Lake stratigraphic section comprises the top of the Gilman Formation, the Blondeau Formation and the three sills of the Cummings Complex. Representative samples were analysed to allow characterization of the chemo-stratigraphic profile and geochemical affinity of the six rock facies found in the section. All the mineralized horizons are associated with sedimentary units. Geochemical signatures associated with the mineralizations are either very weak or very localized and shown by increases in K20 around the mineralizations and Fe203 near them. The mineralizations are stratiform, synvolcanic but resedimented and remobilized by regional metamorphism and possibly by hydrothermal activity initiated by the intrusion of the Cummings Complex. The evolution of the sedimentary basin with the decrease of its depth is confirmed by the chemo-stratigraphic profiles. Stratigraphic position in the section is important in order that the chemo-stratigraphy may serve as a guide for mining exploration in the distal facies of the Blondeau Formation.

"In this study, we characterize the high-temperature deformation of typical “Class I” solid solution Al-Mg alloys as a superplastic elongation attributable to the solute drag creep of dislocations. The second-phase particles formed by adding Fe or Si as impurity atoms to the Al-Mg alloys impeded the gliding motion of dislocations, thereby decreasing their hot ductility and resulting in cavity formation. High-temperature tensile tests were performed with initial strain rates in the range of 1×10–3 to 1×10–1 s–1 at air temperatures 673–723 K. The dominant high-temperature deformation mechanism in these alloys was the solute drag creep controlled by the interdiffusion of Mg in Al. In this study, the calculation of critical length, defined by the diffusion-based relaxation of the stress concentration region around second-phase particles, is reported using the Needleman–Rice parameter. An analysis of the impact of cavity formation based on a comparison of the Needleman–Rice parameter and second-phase particle size is also reported.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloys with high specific strengths are utilized as structural materials for transportation machines to minimize their weight, which consequently maximizes fuel efficiency, environment preservation, and so on (Miller et al., 2000; Heinz et al., 2000; Starke & Staley, 1996; Polmear, 1996; Immarigeon et al., 1995; Burger, Gupta, Jeffrey, & Lloyd, 1995; Ye, 2003). Microstructure refinement by severe plastic deformation (SPD) has been performed on a laboratory scale to achieve a higher strength of crystalline materials (Valiev et al., 2006; Song, Ponge, Raabe, Speer, & Matlock, 2006; Beyerlein & Toth, 2009; Sabirov, Murashkin, & Valiev, 2013; Sauvage, Wilde, Divinski, Horita, & Valiev, 2012). At room temperature, grain refinement strengthens the material, as given by the Hall-Petch relationship (Hall, 1951; Petch, 1953); at higher temperatures, superplasticity can be expected (Sherby & Wadsworth, 1989; Edington, Melton, & Cutler, 1979; Furukawa, Horita, Nemoto, & Langdon, 2001; Langdon, 2006). However, the synthesis of large-size materials by SPD processes is not yet feasible."

Shaft sinking through solid rock, which contains little or no water, poses little difficulty. However, when loose, water-bearing strata have to be contended with, water control measures, and pumping facilities are needed. Shaft sinking in Athabasca Basin requires sinking through water bearing sandstone which can be highly fractured. Intersection of local zones of extensive fracturing results in the potential for high water inflows with pressures up to 5 Mpa. Grouting is carried out ahead of each shaft sinking interval as water control strategy. In the grouting method, liquid cement is forced into the water-bearing earth under very high pressure. Shaft sinking performance which can be quantified in terms of rate of advance is highly dependent on the days spent at each interval grouting before sinking can advance to the next interval. This paper presents the shaft sinking experience in Athabasca basin and how some of this is translated into Geoscientific Investigations for Future Shafts. A comparison of Geoscientific data collected from future shafts at McArthur River and Millennium Mines is compared to historical data collected from pilot holes, where shafts have already been sunk. The paper concludes with the strategies for better integration of hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical data.

Excessive residual stress in Al engine blocks may result in cylinder distortion which reduces engine operating efficiency. As such, neutron diffraction was used to measure residual strain along the Fe liners and Al, in the hoop, radial and axial orientations with respect to the cylinder axis, at the cylinder interbore region. Residual stresses were subsequently calculated using generalized Hooke's law and related to the microstructure along the cylinder bridge. The results suggest that the residual stresses in the Al interbore region are tensile and increased with depth in the axial direction of the cylinder. The increase in residual stress at the bottom of the cylinder coincides with a finer and more uniform microstructure in this region of the cylinder. The refinement in microstructure at the bottom of the cylinder likely increased alloy strength, thereby decreasing this section's susceptibility to distortion. This study successfully quantified the residual stress profiles in a heat treated engine block and related the stress profiles to an as-cast engine block.

"With Inco recording record profits over the past year, most people have forgotten the painful years of the last recession/depression when Inco was losing up to a million dollars a day for a short period . While high nickel prices have contributed to the exceptional recent profits, the real achievements stem from the tremendous advances in productivity and cost improvements that make Inco one of the lowest cost nickel producers.Some of the major advances in productivity have occurred in the mines. The establishment of Mining Research Departments in both Thompson and Copper Cliff in 1979/80 provided the stimulus and the opportunity to dedicate personnel to specific research projects, on a full-time basis; and more particularly to concentrate on the efficiency of the total mine system. The Copper Cliff North Mine was brought back into production as a research mine dedicated to the development and testing of new mining methods and equipment. A shop facility known as the ""Murray Shop"" was set up as the centre of innovation for the development and construction of prototype equipment required for new bulk mining methods. While other expenditures were being curtailed , investment in mining research was being increased. An early success was an ""in the hole"" drill that could be broken down into small components to access even the remotest sectors of a mine to convert labour intensive undercut-and-fill mining to "" vertical crater retreat "" , VCR, bulk mining. A new mine manufacturing company-Continuous Mining Systems-was incorporated with the objective of building innovative mining equipment, with strong focus on automated continuous sytems. Continuous Mining Systems has now grown to a $25 million per year business. With these synergistic thrusts, the VCR bulk mining method was implemented in all of the Ontario Division mines, raising the percentage of ore mined by bulk mining techniques from 320/0 in 1981 to over 90% today. Coupled with re-designed job responsibilities, sup- ported by appropriate training, mine productivity more than doubled. It was discovered that VCR mining could be adapted to the narrower Thompson mine ores with identical improvements in productivity. Development of the Thompson Open Pit North had an additional favourable impact on production cost s in Thompson. The timing of the open pit development could not have been better. It permitted Inco to rapidly increase production at high productivity and low cost, in years of record demand and prices."

"These standards were developed by the CIM for use with the value or worth of a Mineral Property as opposed to “evaluation” where the key objective is an economic assessment or determination of the economic merit of a propertyP1 .0 BACKGROUNDPl.1 There are at present no comprehensive standards for valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. In the reductive smelting of the copper concentrate like a blast furnace operation using coke as fuel and reductant or in processing the copper concentrate which contains coal in the bulk, a sulfur-deficient matte phase often coexists with an iron base alloy in the bottom of the smelting furnace. This alloy is generally called furnace residue or speiss when considerable amount of arsenic or antimony is contained in the alloy and in the extreme case of reducing condition the alloy is saturated with carbon. As a fundamental study to know the behavior of some precious metals such as silver, gold and platinum between the sulfur-deficient matte and the furnace residue or the speiss which are in equilibrium under reducing condition, the phase relations and distribution of precious elements in the Cu-Fe-S-As and Cu-Fe-S-Sb systems saturated with carbon were determined at 1473 K by a quenching method.

The primary motivation underlying the proposal of polygeneration systems for mine sites is to increase the efficient use of natural resources by combining different technologies and energy resources while satisfying energy service demands. For many mineral producers, particularly in Canada?s mining extremes of climate and depth, energy in support of mineral production can be the second largest cost centre after labour. A generic methodology is proposed for the design of energy supply systems in mine sites, based on a search for the minimum discounted cost of energy supplied for all feasible different plant configurations. These configurations can be represented within a connectivity matrix which corresponds to a network representation. A Mixed Integer Programming formulation is set out for the multiperiod synthesis and operational planning problem. This is characterized by i) binary variables for the selection of technologies, ii) integer variables for the determination of the number of units installed, and iii) by continuous variables for the representation of energy and economic flows. Through the integration of particular energy supply strategies matching specific mine circumstances (on-grid, remote, degree days, etc) and consideration of technologies that improve energy efficiency, hitherto not considered new technologies and demand management systems or new perspectives on optimal mine site energy supply can be investigated. Some of these investigations identify the economic conditions through which biomass energy feedstocks should be used, for direct heat production, for gasification and providing for Fischer-Tropsch syndiesel manufacture. As well as integrating demand from mobile diesel-fuelled plant into an optimization procedure that hitherto has only been considered for static energy production and consumption plant, this analysis shows how the techniques can be used to explore economic conditions of threshold prices for biomass (purpose-grown biomass and peat are considered herein) and trucked-in diesel. The methodology also allows for electricity and syngas storage and diesel and biomass bunkering. Within the paper the energy demands for a remote, open pit mining operation located in Northern Ontario are considered as a case study to illustrate the technique and investigations. As expected, for mines close to electricity, natural gas, and diesel distribution infrastructures, the optimal choice is to connect. When a constraint is applied specifying that connection is not possible, as would be for the case exemplified, the optimal choice includes some of the more exotic options for mine site energy supply.

"The Gunnar uranium deposit was within metasedimentary rocks of the late Archaen Tazin Group. These rocks were intensely altered by albitization so that the immediate host to the ore consisted dominantly of albite, and by the subsequent introduction of calcite. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in a pipe-shaped breccia zone. Oxidation of the ore was more intense near surface than at depth, but there was no near-surface enrichment.IntroductionThe Gunnar Mine site is on the tip of Crackingstone Peninsula, on the north shore of Lake Athabasca, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The peninsula forms the southern part of the Beaverlodge mining area. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in brecciated metasedimentary rocks of the Tazin Group, and the deposit was characterized by extreme albitization and subsequent carbonatization of the host environment.Production from the mine began in 1954 and the ore was depleted by 1963. In that interval the deposit yielded about 5 million tonnes of ore containing about I. 75 kg/tonne U3O8. It was mined initially from an open-pit and subsequently from underground; the open-pit contributed about 55% of total tonnage. Uranium was recovered by atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, ion exchange concentration, and precipitation with magnesia.This paper is based on studies made during the productive life of the mine and is concerned primarily with pre-ore alteration of the rocks containing the deposit, and with the ore mineralogy."

A new process to recover platinum group metals (PGMs) from automotive catalyst scrap using metal vapor was developed. To improve the efficiency of the acid dissolution process of PGMs, metal vapor of reactive elements such as magnesium or calcium were contacted with spent automotive catalyst. It was expected that metal vapor would react with metal selectively and form intermetallic compounds. The specimen of the spent catalyst was treated at 1173 K for 3 h, and it was then dissolved in aqua regia for 1 h to recover PGMs. After the reactive metal treatment, 88% of Pt, 81% of Pd, and 72% of Rh in the catalyst scrap was dissolved, while only 77% of Pt, 69% of Pd, and 38% of Rh was dissolved from untreated scraps.

In 2007 Copper Mountain Mining determined that there were sufficient resources to consider reopening the Similco Mine near Princeton, BC. The mill facility that had been built by Newmont Mining in 1972 was closed in 1996 and all of the process equipment removed. The mill had been built on the west side of the Similkameen River to facilitate mining of the Ingerbelle Deposit. In 1980 construction was completed on a primary crusher and cable belt to deliver ore across the Similkameen River from the Copper Mountain deposit to the Ingerbelle mill. With the decision to restart mining of the Copper Mountain deposit, the decision was made to design and build a 35,000 tpd grinding and flotation mill near the mining operations. This paper discusses the application of historical operating data for the selection of the mills for the new grinding circuit and provides an overview of the grinding circuit design.

Around the world many potash mines experience brine inflow problems. The presence of brine in underground excavations may induce structural and stability problems. A study has been carried out to simulate the effect of brine on the performance of pillar support. The testing program consisted of loading potash specimens in a creep frame, and simulating inflows by continuously pumping brine into an experimental cell. Brine temperatures and load conditions were varied to simulate several mining and inflow conditions. Specimens were fitted with acoustic emission transducers to monitor energy emissions during an eight-hour test duration. Samples of brine were also collected to provide K+ and Na+ concentration data necessary for an accurate assessment of the dissolution process. Test results indicated that dissolution rates are highly dependent on brine temperature and load conditions. Loads approaching 50% UCS tend to generate very high rates of energy emissions, often leading to the failure of the simulated pillars. This study demonstrated that acoustic emission could be effectively used for predicting the performance of pillars when exposed to inflow brine.

"The objective of this work is to develop a practical numerical approach for applying the confining pressure to discrete element cylindrical triaxial tests. A layer of membrane particles with very low stiffness and extremely high contact bond strength was created around the lateral boundary of the cylindrical numerical specimen. To prevent the membrane particles from penetrating into the rock specimen on application of confining forces and to provide a smooth boundary surface, the space between the membrane and rock particles was filled using small-diameter packing particles. The results of this method were compared with those of rigid boundary method with confining pressure of 20MPa. The results obtained show that new approach gives both peak strength and post peak response that are in closer agreement with laboratory findings. BACKGROUNDThe discrete element method (DEM) has become the cornerstone for simulating both intact material and discrete fractures for low porosity strong rocks (ISRM Classes R3 to R6). Despite the advances in its application, simulating realistic behaviour of intact rock using the DEM remains a challenge. The bonded particle model was introduced as a potential solution for simulating the complex mineral grains in strong rock and other granular materials (Potyondy and Cundall, 2004; Utili and Nova, 2008; Salot et al., 2009). While some issues were resolved, a remaining challenge is the lack of the bonded particle model to simulate the brittle response commonly observed in strong rocks during the triaxial compressive test. Such behaviour is shown in Fig. 1 for Lac du Bonnet Granite at a confining pressure of 20MPa."

Increasing global demand for coking coal has initiated several new coal mine developments in northeast BC. These developments are able to take advantage of the currently under utilized infrastructure that was put in place during the 1970?s and 1980?s for the Quintette and Bullmoose coal mines; which includes the Town of Tumbler Ridge, a 1,000km rail line to the coal terminal at Prince Rupert and a road system providing highway access to the town site. Coal within the two foothills regions of BC (north-east and south-east) is mined by open pit truck/shovel methods. Optimized mine plans require a thorough understanding of Rocky Mountain structural geology, attention for access in steep terrain, and a related understanding of the geotechnical conditions that control the stability of pit slopes and waste dumps. Thus there is a requirement to properly integrate mine planning with geotechnical engineering considerations. Many of the technical issues are well understood from experience during the past 30 years of Western Canadian coal mining. The challenge is to ensure that the mine plans are able to take full advantage of these lessons learned. The paper will focus on mine planning and geotechnical design issues to do with high angle-of-repose waste dumps and steeply bedded footwall slopes to illustrate the advantage of properly recognizing the important stability control issues during the early stages of engineering evaluations. Case histories from the existing and planned coal mining operations will be presented.

In order to recycle the iron and rare earth from the Baotou tailings, a roasting method was developed involving the addition of C, Ca(OH)2, and NaOH, designed to both decompose the rare earth minerals and convert haematite into magnetite and allow its recovery. The effect of various parameters such as roasting temperature, roasting time, C addition, Ca(OH)2 addition, and NaOH addition on the reduction ratio of haematite (iron sesquioxide) and decomposition ratio of rare earth were investigated. The results showed that the reduction ratio of haematite and the decomposition ratio of rare earth could be as high as 85% and 95% respectively when the roasting temperature was 650°C, roasting time was 60 min, Ca(OH)2 addition was 4%, NaOH addition was 3%, and C addition was 1.5%.

In 2008, Anglo installed the Modular IntelliMine® System at its Kleinkopje Mine (AKK). As part of this deployment, Anglo also used the Change Management Consulting Service offered by Modular to ensure a successful installation. This paper outlines the benefits that AKK has realized through the deployment of the system, including a 15% improvement in tonne/kilometers per hour (TKPH). The mine benefited from the improvements provided by the system almost immediately by utilizing change management to more effectively integrate IntelliMine technology into their processes. This case study includes details about the deployed system, the implementation of change management, and recommendations to ensure success in future projects.

"Even though the subject of this panel discussion is dust control, rather than dwell on the design aspects of dust collection systems which are well documented in numerous publications, :it was considered more pertinent to the present economics of mining to examine the energy costs involved.At the present time, the facts of shrinking fossil fuel reserves and spiralling fuel costs are being constantly brought to our attention. Industry is being motivated to consider the possibilities of incorporating heat recovery systems in areas where they prove to be economical. Unfortunately, it is not a simple exercise to determine if the installation and operation of heat recovery equipment is feasible and economical. Each process involving heat recovery potential must be thoroughly studied in all aspects.In a paper presented at the 1975 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Toronto, Ontario, entitled ""The Influence of Energy Conservation on Concentrator Design"", it was stated that the largest single energy consumer in winter is space heating with the largest portion of this supplied to crushing and screening plants. (1) Within the scope of this panel discussion we will study, as one example, a crushing and screening plant using natural gas heat in the province of British Columbia and we will explore the feasibility and economics of installing air-to-air heat recovery equipment."
