THREE OF the gold mines in the Red Lake Camp operates fluid bed roasters in their milling circuits. The mines are Campbell Red Lake, Cochenour Willans, and Dickenson. The roasters are used for the autogenous roasting of a flotation concentrate for subsequent gold recovery by cyanidation. Cochenour and Dickenson operate single stage reactors, whilst Campbell use a two-stage system. Ore treated by the mines is similar in that the major part of the gold is associated with arsenopyrite. Other sulphides present are pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite and sphalerite. Gangue minerals are mainly quartz, with carbonates and talc. Mineralization is, for the most part, extremely fine, and there is intimate association between sulphides and quartz, so much so, th at a picked specimen of apparently massive arsenopyrite will frequently contain as much as 80 per cent gangue. "Mining industry has been the building blocks for human development through millennia and will continue to play its role in sustainability and meeting society’s needs for raw material. In the way towards sustainability, the next generation of efficient and heavy duty of Sandvik’s crushers, CH860 and CH865, are introduced for efficient crushing. As the secondary, tertiary and/or pebble crusher, these new crushers are designed to over perform in tough mining environment. Featuring higher crushing forces relative to the mantel diameter and 500 kW motor, combined with advanced automation system, i.e., sophisticated HydrosetTM and Automated Setting Regulation (ASRTM), combined with overpressure system with dedicated air supply in dust collar, etc., the new crushers provide higher safety, productivity, and reliability with the same foot-print of conventional cone crushers.Since crushers are more energy efficient than mills it makes sense to effort in fine crushing to save energy and protect environment. That has been the logic behind development and introducing stronger and more efficient crushers by Sandvik. The results on crushing hard iron and gold ores by CH865 have proven its efficiency in fine crushing at a higher productivity, availability and reliability rates through increasing throughput for defined size fraction and extended crushing chamber liner life.Within this paper the performance of the CH865 to deal with two different ores are presented discussed with a glance at how the downstream milling process can be benefited by saving energy and reducing the operation cost. In plant practice, the implementation of the new CH865 provides between 25 and 30% of the crushed ore in the size range of first step milling, i.e., < 2 mm, that offers opportunity for reduction in energy consumption in milling and even changing the process plant configuration by directly forwarded that part to gravity separation. Furthermore, potential of converting the rod mill to ball mill to improve productivity has been considered by plant engineers. Furthermore, some potential applications for such efficient crushers are brought into considerations and discussed. The new developments provide about 30% higher crushing force to efficiently deal with competent ores and pebbles. The CH860 and CH865 crushers are well suited to replace conventional secondary and tertiary crushers respectively; nevertheless, CH865 is virtual option for pebble crushing in SAG and AG milling circuits."

Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling for simulation of fluid flow and combustion in industrial scale electric furnace is presented. Poor combustion efficiency, roof and/or side wall overheating, carry over to off-gas system and non-ideal radiative heat transfer to processes or cooling systems have been common limiting factors causing inadequate process performance of the furnace, operational problems, and safety hazards. This paper describes how CFD analysis can be used to obtain a better understanding of commonly observed problems associated with freeboard combustion. Examples are presented to describe using combustion CFD modeling to understand requirements to diagnose a problem with furnace design including required freeboard volume or possible roof/side wall overheating.

Measurements made with high precision GPS landmarks and geotechnical radar Reutech MSR- 300 associated with the observed movements in the north face of Assarel Mine, where on a horizontal distance of 50 m, 2 groups of landmarks indicated different deformation behavior. Measurements are made in order to confirm the applicability of the radar system in regions of complex geotechnical conditions. The standard deviation of each landmark is used as an accuracy standard between the separate measurements of the deformation vectors made by the high-precision GPS system for each landmark. A very good correlation between the displacement vectors can be seen based on the measurements made with the high-precision GPS system and the measurements made by the radar system MSR-300. Geological, engineering geological and hydro-geological conditions of the area of concern are discussed in this paper. The measured deformations and the FLAC/SLOPE analysis show similar results. In the paper is discussed their local character and their sensitivity to other geotechnical and hydro geological conditions.

The permanent mould process, which is a favoured process for producing premium quality aluminium casting, is rarely used to produce magnesium alloy parts. This may be attributed different factors such as: the reservation with which the automotive industry considers using magnesium in structural castings; also the relative hot shortness of most magnesium alloys when compared to aluminium A356/357 is another factor. A third reason stems from the fact that the "heat content" of magnesium is much less than that of aluminium, resulting in the difficulty, for a relatively slow process such as permanent mould (versus pressure die casting), to reach a mould dynamic equilibrium temperature sufficiently high to avoid premature freezing and misruns. The present work will address this problem by carrying out controlled cycling of a laboratory mould, poured with aluminium and magnesium alloys. The influence of insulation of the mould and artificial electric heating on the run-in mould temperature will be determined experimentally. A thermal model will be sought for these thermal devices that will allow to predict the thermal behaviour of moulds of different geometry before a single casting is poured. The model will be tested on an industrial casting in a workshop environment.

Tin-mining activities have taken place in the region of the German Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) for over hundreds of years up until 1991. For long times, gravity separation processes used to be the dominating beneficiation approach in those mining districts to recover cassiterite, the main tin-bearing mineral. For fine (< 100 µm) and very fine (< 20 µm) particles these approaches might not represent effective techniques, significant valuable materials could not be recovered and reported to tailings, where it was subsequently disposed. Thus, there are substantial amounts of cassiterite still present in these tailings disposals, most of it as very fine particles with already high degrees of liberation. That fact brings these tailings disposals into focus for potential reprocessing using beneficiation approaches, which are more sensitive to fine and very fine particles. In this paper we present results concerning the laboratory-scale treatment of material from exemplary heaps of the former Altenberg and Ehrenfriedersdorf mining sites using various flotation methods (including conventional froth flotation and oil-assisted flotation). Different size ranges of the material were previously prepared in order to investigate their response to the different techniques. For the study, special emphasis is put on agglomeration flotation, an oil-assisted flotation method. Therefore, an aliphatic oil phase of alkane basis is used to either selectively aggregate or collect the cassiterite particles. Recovery and flotation performance results are presented with respect to different process parameters: various collectors (including sulphosuccinamates and phosphonic acids) and depressants (including sodium fluorosilicate and oxalic acid) regime, oil dosage, agitation time and pulp density during oil/pulp agitation. Furthermore, the oil/particle aggregation behavior is analyzed via particle image analysis and, additionally, collector adsorption characteristics are investigated by contact angle measurements and zeta potential analysis. The data obtained is correlated with the testwork results achieved in order to interpret the flotation response of very fine cassiterite particles.

"Goldcorp’s Hoyle Pond mine has recently completed several projects which have impacted the overall ventilation system. The project includes extending the Fresh Air Raise (FAR) to depth, development of a new Return Air Raise (RAR), and the installation of new sensors and ventilation controls throughout the mine. Two years after the completion of #2 Winze, the mine is ramping up its ore production to 1,300 tpd (up from 1,100). To ensure safe and profitable production, a reliance upon technology has been needed to provide the required ventilation to the work areas according to the mine plan. To systematically assess the mine’s ventilation in real-time, a significant increase in remote monitoring was required. This included installing additional flow, pressure, temperature and gas sensors. The first step in upgrading the existing monitoring was to purchase airflow and differential pressure monitors and install them in key areas of the mine. This paper presents the process of expanding the monitoring capability at Hoyle Pond mine, the selected equipment and the results of the implementation. The intended goal was to improve safety while minimizing capital and operation costs. The monitors were installed in strategic locations to provide immediate feedback on the impact of changes to the primary ventilation airflows. Comparing the available sensor technologies, installing them and systematically monitoring the ventilation served as a first step towards developing a mine wide Ventilation Control System. In addition, the initial state of the monitoring and control system, with final results and the chosen solution for the mine site, are presented. INTRODUCTION The Hoyle Pond mine is located in the City of Timmins, within the Porcupine mining district, Ontario, which has produced more than 70 million ounces of gold since 1910. Currently, approximately 60% of Porcupine Gold Mines gold production comes from the Hoyle Pond underground mine. Mechanized cut and fill and long-hole mining methods are used to extract the ore. The remainder of the ore comes from the Hollinger Open Pit mine. The Dome Underground mine ceased operations in 2017. Hoyle Pond is currently mining at 1820 meters below the surface and plans to go deeper. The average dry-bulb as wet-bulb temperature underground varies according to the depth and surface conditions which has extremes of –40°C in winter to +30°C in summer. The total airflow volume pushed down from surface is 240 m3/s to accommodate the diesel-powered equipment needed for normal operations. In order to improve the quality of air underground a program has been implemented to use diesel particulate filters, starting with the truck fleet and 6-yard scoops, followed by the intention to implement the rest of the functional diesel-powered equipment and eventually move to electric equipment."

By understanding those information relationships and the cost of wrong decisions, analysts can estimate the value of information flow. Developers can then ensure that systems deliver key information in an accurate and timely way. In this paper, general maintenance decision-making is discussed, with examples of how model-based analysis can improve the information delivered to decision makers.

The last coal-fired power plant to be built in Canada came into operation in 1994. Since then, Canada?s electricity requirements have grown substantially but no new coal-burning plants have been built. This country has abundant resources of coal from coast to coast, but in recent years, this has not affected our choice of fuel. In many other countries this is not the case, and the use of coal is growing rapidly. Although this presentation covers the topic from an Alberta perspective, some of the conclusions can be extrapolated to the rest of the country, and perhaps even to other countries. The coal found in the Alberta plains is particularly attractive because of its low cost and low sulphur content. Yet coal is no longer the fuel of choice, and a long-standing provincial government policy to favour coal for electricity generation has been ignored for more than a decade. Considering the lack of good alternatives, it seems obvious that we should look to coal as our primary energy source in the generation of electricity and for other industrial applications. This paper discusses some of the reasons that coal has fallen out of favour, particularly with respect to electricity generation. The significance of the deregulation of the electricity industry will not be ignored. In addition, the author will offer his opinion on the question of what it will take in order for coal to once again become the favoured fuel.

"This paper aims at enriching a homogenization-based anisotropic damage model for hard rocks under complex loading. A new damage criterion is proposed to capture material strain softening. Within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we are particularly concerned with two strongly coupled dissipative mechanisms: frictional sliding and damage by microcracking, which usually take place at cracks within cohesive geomaterials under compression. Focusing on the representative elementary volume containing multiple crack families, the free enthalpy of the matrix-cracks system is obtained. Importantly, a back-stress term is involved in the local stress applied to microcracks. This back stress plays the hardening/softening role in the friction criterion which is formulated at local scale. Strain hardening owns to the accumulation of frictional shearing and dilatancy while strain softening is caused by crack growth. The multiscale damage model is used to simulate laboratory tests on the Westerly granite under true triaxial compressions. INTRODUCTIONWhen subjected to compressive loads, hard rocks present nonlinear mechanical behaviors and induced material anisotropies. In that process, two main dissipative mechanisms have been largely identified: damage by crack growth and frictional sliding along closed crack faces, which are usually strongly coupled to each other on crack scale. Theoretical investigations have shown that the damagefriction coupling analyses allow explaining a large number of experimental phenomena involved in brittle or quasi-brittle materials. Concerning constitutive modeling, the standard Eshelby’s solution-based homogenization procedure for heterogeneous materials was recently applied successfully to describing the mechanical and poromechanical behaviors of cracked frictional solids."

"Surface changes in naturally occurring metal sulfides (pyrite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and molybdenite) due to treatments from high-power electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP) at varying times were studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analysis of the obtained results revealed common patterns and differences in surface transformations. The transformations were found to include two main stages. The first stage was observed at low treatment intensities (up to n ~103 pulses). At this stage, formation and accumulation in the surface layer of the nonstoichiometric sulfide phase, oxides and hydroxides, as well as elemental (polysulfide) sulfur and/or metastable sulfur species (thiosulfate, sulfite) was observed. The second stage (N = 3·103 pulses) is characterized by thermal removal of sulfur species and renewal of the mineral surface (sulfidization).It was found that the chemical changes of the sulfur on the surface layer of pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite included accumulation/formation of S0 (Sn 2-) at the first stage of the transformation, followed by its removal. An increase in the surface concentration of elemental sulfur for pyrite and chalcopyrite was 10–12% while arsenopyrite was approximately 5%. A more complicated chemical change was observed for sphalerite and galena, that included formation/accumulation of metastable sulfur species (thiosulfate, sulfate) at the initial stage (up to 103 pulses) and during longer treatment times, the sulphur is reduced back to its initial state (sulfide or disulfide). The increased concentration of S0 sulfur, compared to the original sample, was only 3% in galena and sphalerite.The application of HPEMP treatment to improve flotation selectivity is supported by singlemineral flotation tests. Changes in flotability as a result of HPEMP treatment are principally explained by surface phase changes that resulted in higher adsorption activity."

"The results of a chemical and mineralogical study of eighteen opaque-oxide occurrences are discussed and the detailed chemical, metallurgical and mining feasibility study of a vanadium-rich magnetite deposit is summarized. A plot of the mol-percentages in the system FeO- Fe2O 3-TiO2 indicates that the deposits fall into two distinct groups: some contain hematite with ilmenite, and some others have magnetite with ilmenite (titaniferous magnetites). The plot also suggests that the two types of deposits were crystallized from liquids of different compositions. Each group has its distinct structural features. Vanadium is present in all of the studied specimens, however concentrations of economic importance have so far been found only in the titaniferous magnetite deposits. The vanadium content of the oxide concentrations of the Dore Lake Complex is the largest among the studied occurrences. Analyses of the concentrates of the drill-core sections show a compositional variation across the orebody; a continuous increase in the tenor of Ti02 and a decrease in the vanadium content upward in the layered sequence is found. Concentration tests on several tons of samples indicate that about 80 per cent of the vanadium is recovered in the magnetite concentrate."

Ferrihydrite is often the initial precipitate resulting from the rapid neutralization of Fe(III) sulphate solutions, and it seems to be a major constituent of zinc plant neutral leach residues. The most important parameters affecting ferrihydrite precipitaton are temperature, solution pH and the neutralization rate. Low temperatures and rapid neutralization rates yield poorly filterable ferrihydrite, whereas higher temperatures and slower neutralization rates produce readily filterable precipitates; in all instances, however, the precipitates are two-line ferrihydrite. Significant amounts of Zn are incorporated in the ferrihydrite precipitates, and the Zn contents increase with increasing Zn concentration, pH or temperature. Generally, the sulphate contents of the precipitates decrease as the Zn contents increase, and this may indicate that the Zn is adsorbed on the ferrihydrite. Discrete Zn phases were not detected. Neither Cd nor Tl is precipitated with ferrihydrite, although thallium jarosite co-precipitates with ferrihydrite at high Tl concentrations and elevated temperatures. Virtually all of the Sn added to the solution precipitates with the ferrihydrite, but the tin is believed to be present as intimately admixed amorphous SnO2.nH2O. Although selenite extensively precipitates with the ferrihydrite, selenate remains mostly in solution, likely because of the close similarity of the SeO4 2- ion to the SO4 2- ion which is present in high concentrations and saturates the available sites for anion adsorption.

Copper mineralization occurs at several places along the shore of Notre Dame bay, Newfoundland, and at one time formed the basis of a considerable mining industry. The sources of the mineralizing solutions and the structural settings of some of the deposits have not been clearly understood. This paper reports new investigations into the origin and structure of the deposits between Bett&apos;s cove and Stocking harbour, in a strip about ten miles long and two miles wide along the western shore of Notre Dame bay. The most complete previous descriptions of the area are those of Snelgrove (1929, 1931, 1938), Douglas, Williams and Rove (1940), and the writer (1947). The discovery of the Bett&apos;s Cove deposits took place about 1860, soon after the discovery of the well-known Tilt Cove deposits to the north. Several other small prospects were found between Bett&apos;s cove and Stocking harbour between 1880 and 1910. At Bett&apos;s cove, active mining began in 1875 and a small smelting plant was built near the mine in 1877. .Mining operations came to an abrupt halt in 1883 after a major cave-in. In 1900, and again in 1906, attempts were made to drain the old workings and reopen the mine but were abandoned long before completion. Total production amounted to about 130,000 tons of hand-picked copper ore which averaged about ten per cent copper, and 2,450 tons of pyrite (Snelgrove, 1938, pp. 52-55).

The mine is accessed from Lac du Bonnet which is linked to the provincial road system.Brief Description of OperationTantalum Mining Corporation of Canada Ltd. operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining, and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Daily campaigned crushing of the tantalum and lithium ores supply separate concentration circuits. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity equipment together with recently developed centrifugal concentration methods. All tantalum concentrates go to Cabot Performance Materials for the production of tantalum chemicals and metal. Lithium minerals are recovered using heavy medium separation and silicate flotation to produce spodumene and montebrasite/amblygonite concentrates. The lithium concentrates are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock for the recently built on-site chemical plant dedicated to tl1e production of cesium formate, a high-density drilling fluid for use in the oil industry."

The corrosion behavior of high pressure die-cast and thixocast AXJ530 magnesium alloys has been investigated in 0.05M NaC1 solution at pH 6.0 using potentiodynamic polarization tests, electrochemical noise (EN) technique, electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning reference electrode technique (SRET). The behavior of die-cast and thixocast specimens were compared using each of these techniques and the results discussed. Further tests have been carried out with die-cast AZ91D alloy to better compare and interpret the results. Experiments indicate that the thixocast specimens of AXJ530 alloy have a better corrosion resistance than those of die cast alloy in neutral solution.

"Excess Gibbs energy is a thermodynamic parameter which quantifies the difference between the value of the Gibbs energy for a real mixture and that for an ideal mixture. More specifically the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of a species (i) in a mixture is indicated by the change in the overall excess Gibbs energy of the solution as the number of moles of species (i) changes while keeping temperature, pressure and the number of moles of all other species in the solution constant. Generally it is obtained from the activity coefficient which in turn can be obtained for a species in a mixture using a variety of models. The most widely used method is to use UNIFAC. Flotation is probably the most important process in the concentration of minerals and requires the use of reagents such as collectors and frothers. There is abundant experimental data which illustrates that collectors of different alkyl chain lengths will change the contact angle and that frothers of different structures and molecular weights will result in changes in key flotation properties such as froth behavior, surface tension and critical coalescence concentration. In this paper it is shown that there is a strong linear relationship between measured parameters such as froth volume/height, surface tension, critical coalescence concentration and contact angle and the partial molar excess Gibbs energy of the molecules used. Proposals are made to explain these correlations.INTRODUCTIONAs is well known froth flotation is arguably the most widely used process in the separation of minerals. In broad terms the process relies on the use of reagents known as collectors to adsorb onto a mineral surface and thus render the mineral particle hydrophobic. Alkyl thiolates are very commonly used for this purpose. The hydrophobicity is induced as a result of the alkyl group’s molecular structural properties which results in it forming a non-ideal mixture with the process water. Surfactants (or frothers) are typically alcohols and are known to lower the surface tension of the system and also inhibit bubble coalescence and reduce bubble size. Since alcohols are polar they will also form a non-ideal mixture with water. The hydrophobic mineral attaches to the bubble and rises to the froth phase where the valuable mineral is recovered as a concentrate. Frothers have often been characterized using the so-called HLB (hydrophobic-lipophilic balance) number but recently it was shown that the use of activity coefficients (?) or excess Gibbs energy (G ex ), which is calculated using equation (1) is a much more appropriate way to describe the behavior of these reagents in non-ideal mixtures with water (Corin and O’Connor, 2014)."

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. Various strategic projects were carried out in 2002 to increase the capacity of Teck Cominco&apos;s integrated zinc-lead smelter at the Trail operations site in British Columbia, Canada. The lead smelter treats the iron residue from the zinc plant and optimizes the overall zinc recovery. This paper summarizes two options that were considered to reduce the zinc content in the leaching iron residue. The first option involved increasing the capacity of an existing hot acid leach circuit up to the iron loading constraints of the circuit. The second sought to maximize the hot acid leach capability by separating the ferrite-rich solids, followed by aggressive hot acid leaching (>100°C) and subsequent iron precipitation. Different forms of iron precipitation were reviewed in order to determine the most effective and economical approach. Among these, was a novel high temperature ferrite conversion process. The technical results and selection criteria are presented together with possible ways to integrate the process concepts into the current sulphide leaching plant circuit. The first option was selected for implementation and is currently being operated successfully.
