Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.

"Tumbler Ridge, Canada's newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town's ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

The Cenozoic unconsolidated strata with the thickness of 100 to 240m in the east area of China are composed of clay, sandy clay and hardpan, etc. Numerous shafts of the coal mines in these areas have been damaged to various degrees since 1987, with the main reason for this being the subsidence of the super-thick unconsolidated strata. To prevent the continuing settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata caused by groundwater removal, long-term water injection through multiple boreholes controlled the settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata. A new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for real-time strain monitoring of the unconsolidated strata during water injection at a coal mine in China. A mathematical model for the compression settlement induced strain calculation is proposed which can assist understanding of the effect of water injection on the ground. With the increase in water injection, the unconsolidated strata compressed state was improved by the transition of the stress state from compressive to tensile stress. The wavelength change of fiber Bragg grating sensors corresponded with the trend of the water level in the same strata. Engineering practice indicates that these sensors can normally, safely and reliably survive conditions associated with hydrous unconsolidated strata. The FBG sensing can be used for continuous lifetime monitoring of the system, starting with real-time monitoring during low-pressure water injection process of multi-borehole. The results will give important guidance for water injection and mastering stratum subsidence.

Recently, the mining industry has become one of the leading target markets for the technology industry as they need to innovate in their productive processes in order to boost productivity, reduce operation costs, increase operation safety, and improve the quality of life of their workers. This work presents the technological developments that HighService has done in different stages of the mining productive processes to include robotic manipulators in their automation solutions as well as the development of new equipment and sensors. The robotic technology integration is presented in different applications such as handling and selection of cathodes in E-W machines, automation of base plate maintenance, automation of cathode stripping machine, and multi-tools handler for liner bolt replacement in SAG mill liner maintenance activities. The proposed solutions show technical and economical viability with low initial investment and short implementation period of six (6) to ten (10) months. The results have been validated in plant, obtaining higher production rates and availability.

"Aluminium A206 (AlCu4) is one of the strongest aluminium casting alloys with tensile properties approaching those of ferritic ductile iron. If the specification on the silicon content (< 0.05%) is easy to achieve during alloy ingot production, it is not the case in a foundry, where returns are used which are not perfectly cleaned from the silicate containing molding sand (Olivine). In alloy A206, the Si content is controlled in order to avoid the formation of a low melting point intermetallic phase (such as phase Q Al5Cu2Si6Mg2); these phases will melt during the solutionizing heat treatment to which alloy A206 must be subjected to develop its outstanding mechanical properties. This incipient melting may deteriorate the mechanical properties of Alloy A206 if the solutionizing treatment is applied at the standard temperature of 530°C.In the present study, a lower temperature solutionizing (520°C) was applied to a high Si content 206 alloy in order to reduce or eliminate the possible incipient melting. This was carried out on a complex shape industrial casting weighing 14 kg (31 lb) and 560x410x250 mm (22x16x10”) in size poured in aluminum 206 with a high silicon content (0.22% vs 0.05% max for alloy A206). Twenty ASTM E8 subsize tensile specimens were excised from two locations in the casting in order to compare the tensile properties for the two solutionizing temperature used (530 and 520°C). Optical and SEM microscopy allowed to investigate the causes of the differences in the properties observed between the 2 zones of the casting studied for 3 different heat treatments. INTRODUCTIONIn spite of their “textbook” outstanding mechanical properties (Up to twice the strength and elongation of the widely used A356 alloy), aluminum-copper alloys of the 2xx series are seldom used because of their propensity for hot tearing [Li, 2011], the segregation of copper [Cho, 2003], and their sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking [Jean, 2009, p. 113)]. Also, because of their wide freezing range and high thermal conductivity, a wide mushy zone makes feeding difficult, unless strong temperature gradients are created by liberal use of chills and risers in the critical zones of the part. Because they are prone to hot tearing, grain refining of Al-Cu alloys is particularly important, titanium playing a major role in the process [Sigworth, 2003]; grain refining has also been shown to be beneficial to fatigue strength [Jean, 2009, p. 103]. Building off the enthusiasm generated by Credit Suisse First Boston on the potential benefits of an industry-wide effort to market gold jewellery, a group of gold producers, led by Randall Oliphant, CEO of Barrick Gold, decides to investigate the long -term impact of launching a significant marketing initiative to stimulate demand for gold jewellery. The group establishes an international Steering Committee representing producers of differing sizes, members and non-members of the World Gold Council. This Committee comprises representatives from AngloGold, Barrick, Gympie Gold, Kinross, Randgold, and Sons of Gwalia and is supported by the Australian Gold Council, the Gold and Silver Institute, and CSFB. The Steering Committee hires McKinsey to assist it by conducting an independent review of whether investment in a large-scale marketing initiative for gold jewellery would be effective in increasing demand for gold, and ultimately of significant economic benefit of the gold industry. "Use of zinc shot feed is a well-established procedure among North American electro-galvanizers. This form of zinc is easy to handle and relatively inexpensive when compared with zinc oxide. This paper reports results on the kinetics of zinc shot dissolution in traditional pure zinc solutions and in electrolytes used for the plating of nickel/zinc alloys. Despite the cementation of minor amounts of nickel in the latter solution, acceptable dissolution rates of the zinc shot can be achieved through proper adjustment of the solution velocity. Under these conditions, the nickel shell produced by cementation is continuously abraded, exposing the underlying zinc.IntroductionThe use of insoluble, noble metal-containing anodes rather than soluble zinc anodes for the operation of high current density electro-galvanizing lines has gained almost universal acceptance. "Abstract - Pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are the dominant sulfide minerals in the 740 zone of the Kelly Lake orebody (Inco Ltd.), Copper Cliff Offset, Sudbury. Petrographic and quantitative electron microprobe analyses of minerals, from sulfide assemblages and host quartz diorite, of the 740 deposit have revealed three processes that have affected sulfide mineralization and associated sulfarsenide and platinum-group-mineral (PGM) distribution: magmatic, hydrothermal, and tectonic. Accessory, zoned cobaltite, and gersdorffite occur in sulfides as a result of these three processes, and PGM occur dominantly in hydrothermally remobilized and deformed ores. Where PGM are present in sulfarsenides they provided nuclei for sulfarsenide growth. Solitary PGM are orders of magnitude larger than those PGM found within sulfarsenide minerals. Five varieties of PGM occur, michenerite and sperrylite being the most common, with lesser froodite, hollingworthite, and ruarsite.The effect of a deformation is a localized fabric in the ore, revealed by pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite bands; pentlandite porphyroblasts also partially define the foliation. The deformed ore is also characterized by alteration of the adjacent quartz diorite, which produced an alteration assemblage including almandine garnet, Fe-rich biotite, and chlorite."

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world&apos;s no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany&apos;s findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

Since milling began in 1988, the Laronde mill has been expanded several times, the most recent, increasing the milling rate from 5 000 to 7 000 mtpd. Laronde uses SAG/ball mill grinding followed by copper and zinc flotation circuits. A cyanidation/Merrill-Crowe process recovers the remaining gold and silver in the flotation tails in order to cope with high silver/gold ratio associated with the discovery of the Penna shaft. Since the commissioning of the Merrill-Crowe refinery in 2000, several modification and expansion projects were performed to reduce health and safety hazards. Remarkably, several of these improvements have contributed at increasing productivity and Net Smelter Return of the refinery while reducing worker&apos;s injuries. In 2004, the refinery was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. Metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the refinery are now understood and areas for further improvements are well defined. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this improvement and describes how ergonomics and recovery can further be improved.

"On the west coast of Cape Breton Island four coal basins have been identified, varying in age and extending from Port Hood northeasterly to Chimney Corner. Those of Chimney Corner - St. Rose in the north and Port Hood in the south belong to the Pennsylvanian Riversdale Group while lying between them are the coal basins of Mabou and Inverness belonging to the younger Pictou Group. Almost all of the coal basins are submarine and coal mining was carried out on all basins at various times. The seams in all basins dip steeply seaward at angles from 10 to 20 degrees but were found to flatten seaward. The coal is ranked as a high volatile C bituminous coal. Ash and sulphur contents are high compared with Sydney coal and the coal has a tendency to spontaneous combustion when stored in large quantities.Of the four basins, the most significant is that of Mabou. At Mabou recent seismic and drilling investigations have indicated that although a sizable reserve of coal may be found offshore the structural problems, particularly faults, and the poor quality of the coal encountered will make it a resource of the future, if at all. Inferred resources have been calculated at 150 million tonnes in four seams over a 10 km2 area and extending 3 km from shore. The quality of the Mabou coals varies with ash, ranging from 5 to 25 per cent and sulphur up to 6 per cent. Calorific value ranges from 25.3 Mj I kg to 31. 7 Mj I kg. The Port Hood and St. Rose -Chimney Corner fields (Fig. 1) contain 16 million and 3 million tonnes respectively, but the Inverness basin is considered to have been depleted. The active mine in this area is the Evans Mine at St. Rose that is currently producing between 30 -50,000 tonnes a year from proven reserves of approximately 3 million tonnes."

Several mineral flotation plants utilize process water with high soluble salt content. The processing of semi-soluble minerals, the use of recycle streams, sea or well water give rise to this situation. It is unclear as to the overall effect on flotation response though there does seem to be evidence of bubble size reduction, increased froth stability and reduced reagent dosage. The present work aims to quantify the effects of salts present in process water on gas dispersion (bubble size and gas holdup) and froth properties. The salts examined were NaCI, CaCl2, Na2SO4, Na2S2O3 and Al2(SO4)3. Tests were conducted to determine the effects of salt type and concentration on gas holdup and bubble size distribution. The salts containing multivalent ions had a greater impact than the monovalent ions, in keeping with the literature. A relationship between gas holdup and ionic strength was established. The concentration of frother (methyl isobutyl carbinol, MIBC) giving equivalent gas holdup was determined. The effect of salt and frother combinations was also explored.Proposed mechanisms for coalescence inhibition in salt solutions are briefly reviewed in light of the current findings.

Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

Nickel laterites contain about 70% of all continental or terrestrial nickel resources; therefore the recovery of nickel from lateritic ores has large economic significance. The processing of lateritic ores involves the preparation and movement of concentrated aqueous suspensions. However due to complex characteristics and non-Newtonian properties, ranging from shear-thinning to shear-thickening and from thixotropic to rheopectic, a basic understanding of the flow behaviour must be developed. This understanding will assist in the development of new plants and the operation of existing plants. The work in this paper involves the characterization of three ore types from the Vermelho ore deposit to categorize them as rheologically simple to complex. Rheological testing was also conducted on pure mineral samples that represent the main minerals in these samples. The results show that the rheological properties of the ore types can be related to the surface properties and physical characteristics of the main mineral constituents.

"Since the amount of e-waste has been rapidly increasing all over the world, there is a desire to develop the effective recycling process. E-waste has various kinds of electronic components with valuable and/or hazardous materials. Recycling of them is an important subject from the viewpoint of both the recovery of valuable materials and waste treatment. In common with all mineral processing, the comminution of e-waste is a key process because the liberation states after comminution determine the overall efficiency of metal recovery. Since some of useful critical metals are concentrated in a specific component, a special and selective grinding is expected to be effective. However, the knowledge about the mechanism and the effectiveness of the selective grinding is still limited and unclear.To better comprehend the mechanism, in this study, the investigation of comminution process using the particle-based simulation was conducted. Especially, this study focused on the comminution performance of printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are major components of e-waste. The behavior of PCBs and airflow in a drum typed agitation mill having flexible chains was simulated by the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). To model the shape of PCBs, the particle based rigid body model was introduced into the DEM. Since this model could not directly simulate the breakage phenomena, collision energy was calculated to qualitatively evaluate the comminution performance. In addition, the simulation results were compared with the experimental comminution tests using simulant PCBs where some capacitors were solder-mounted. These results indicated that comminution performance was affected by the rotation speed of the agitator. It was also demonstrated that the comminution performance was qualitatively evaluated using the particle-based simulation and this particle-based simulation made it possible to investigate the mechanism of e-waste comminution."

Sensor-based sorting is a financially and technically viable technique that is operating with little or no water and relatively little power consumption. Sensor-based sorting has already proven its operational stability at two gold applications in South Africa. Sensor-based sorting cannot only turn waste dumps and diluted mining blocks into reserves. The implementation can also cause a decrease in specific operating costs of mill and mine when for example replacing selective mining by bulk mining methods with subsequent sorting. Successful installations, operational experience, test work data and flow sheet integration from mine-to-mill underline the impact and potential that sensor-based sorting can have on the gold mining and processing industry.

Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) of rocks is an important mechanical parameter for many civil engineering and rock engineering applications such as tunnel excavation, slope stability and foundation design. Macau is one of the world's fastest growing and most densely populated cities, many large and important infrastructures have been being continuously built using pile foundations which are designed to be supported by granitic bedrock. In Macau, the UCS of the granitic bedrock is required almost for every project involving pile foundations and is always measured directly from UCS test in the laboratory. However, direct measurement of UCS requires high quality rock core sample which is not only time-consuming and expensive but also requires high level of operating skill. In view of this fact, estimation of UCS using some empirical correlations will be more practical and efficient because they are relatively fast and economical compared to the direct measurement from UCS test. In the past, some empirical correlations had been established and widely used for estimating UCS of rocks in common engineering practice. However, it has been well recognized that the rock properties are generally varied with sites or geological regions in other words an empirical correlation developed from one region or one country may not be applicable for other regions or countries. Due to the reason that the empirical correlations for predicting UCS for granite are scarce in practice, in this study an extensive experimental program has been performed and a large database containing data such as UCS, Point Load Index (Is50), Schmidt Rebound Hardness (RL), porosity (?), water absorption (S), specific gravity (Gs) and dry density (?d) has been developed. An attempt has been made for developing a new empirical correlation for estimating the UCS of Macau granite. Accordingly, a comprehensive statistical analysis for correlating UCS with Is50, RL, ?, S, Gs and ?d has been performed and a local empirical relationship based on the developed database is proposed for obtaining reliable estimation of UCS for the granite of Macau. Finally, the performance of the proposed correlation is accessed by using another independent testing database developed in this study. It indicates that Is50, RL, ? and S have strong correlation with UCS whereas Gs, ?d have poor correlation with UCS. This study not only proposed a proper predictive empirical correlation for UCS determination for Macau granite but also provides detailed statistical information which is beneficial to engineers for obtaining better characterization of Macau granite.

Placer mineral deposits may exist in the nearshore and shelf regions off western Canada. These deposits could contain gold, ilmenite or zircon as well as sand and gravel aggregate. Two deposit types typical of the British Columbia offshore are: (l) modem and relict gold/titanium beach deposits; and (2) reworked relict titaniferous shelf deposits. The preservation of drowned beach heavy mineral concentrations resulted from a rapid relative sea level rise across the shallow shelves approximately 10 500 years ago, particularly off the Queen Charlotte Islands. This same transgression submerged an outwash fluvial system that had been exposed for at least 3200 years, draining areas of known gold placers.
